Deputy Speaker of Lagos State House of Assembly, Mojisola Meranda, has restated her commitment to inclusive governance and grassroots development.

Speaking at the 10th Constituency Stakeholders’ Meeting at Rockview Hotel, GRA, Apapa, Lagos, with the theme: ‘Governance in Action: The Gains of the Renewed Hope Agenda‘, she said the initiative reflected the present realities of governance at the national and state levels.

She noted that the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu complemented by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES agenda, was already delivering tangible benefits across critical sectors, including employment, infrastructure, education, health and community development.

The Majority Leader of the House of Assembly, Mr Noheem Adams, has empowered 250 residents of the area with N100,000 each, totalling N25 million.

According to reports, reinstated Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly Mudashiru Obasa and his deputy, Mojisola Meranda, are not on the same page regarding vehicles purchased for lawmakers during Meranda’s brief speakership after Obasa was removed.

Obasa was said to have approved N7bilion for the purpose before he was ousted by the majority of the lawmakers on January 13 over allegations of imperiousness and financial impropriety, among others. Meranda, who replaced him, resigned on March 3 and was reinstated as deputy speaker based on an arrangement by hierarchs of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Reports said after Meranda took over, she had purchased 32 Toyota Prado SUV 2025 and seven Toyota Landcruiser 2025 for N5billion, rather than the N7billion budgeted by Obasa, thereby saving the assembly N2billion.  Obasa was said to have approved N7billion for the purchase of 35 Toyota Fortuner SUV and 10 Toyota Prado from Dubai. Meranda was said to have reviewed the approval and called for bidding locally. All the vehicles were supplied locally, contrary to Obasa’s plan to import the vehicles from Dubai.

A source was quoted as saying Meranda “only made a downward review of an existing procurement approval” by Obasa, adding that “no money was withdrawn” by her and she had “spent far less money to acquire better quality cars and didn’t even approve a single one for the office of the Speaker that she occupied.”

If Obasa’s N7billion budget was for 45 vehicles from Dubai, and Meranda bought 39 vehicles for N5billion locally, the difference in the number of vehicles could possibly explain the difference in the cost of the vehicles.

However, it is unclear why Meranda bought 39 vehicles instead of 45 vehicles planned by Obasa.  The assembly comprises 40 lawmakers, two from each of the 20 local government areas. If 39 vehicles were adequate, why did Obasa plan to buy 45? Also, if the vehicles could be supplied locally, why did Obasa plan to import them from Dubai? Considering that Meranda saved N2billion by buying the vehicles at a lower cost, it is puzzling that Obasa was said to be “infuriated.” He should not be.

The Lagos State House of Assembly does not need another storm so soon after the crisis that resulted from the controversial removal of Obasa. Following the resolution of the crisis by APC leaders, the lawmakers should be making efforts to manage the peace and avoid starting a new war.

The Lagos Assembly has been in crisis since the removal of Mudashiru Obasa who had insisted his removal did not follow due process.

Preceding her resignation on Monday were the resignations of principal officers of the House one after the other, and the immediate nominations of their replacements.

Other members of the Assembly commended the leadership and legislative performance of Meranda, praising her diligence and impact within her short time in office.

Meranda explained that she remains committed to serving her constituency, Apapa 1, and described her brief tenure as historic, having being the first female speaker of the Lagos assembly.

Her resignation followed a reported meeting with some high-ranking members of the APC in the state to navigate the leadership crisis that has rocked the Assembly in the last seven weeks.

After she stepped down, the ousted Speaker, who represents Agege Constituency I, Mudashiru Obasa, was re-elected after he was nominated by a former Majority Leader of the House, Noheem Adams, who represents Eti-Osa Constituency 1.

Obasa subsequently took the oath of office as the new Speaker of the Assembly seven weeks after his removal.

He was first elected into the House in 2007. He has been in the chamber since then. He emerged as a speaker in June 2015 before his removal in January 2025.

Similarly, the Deputy Speaker of the House, Mojeed Fatai, who represents Ibeju-Lekki Constituency I, announced his resignation as the deputy speaker of the House.

Fatai said his resignation was in the interest of the House. He was immediately re-elected as the Chief Whip of the Assembly.

The Chief Whip of the Assembly, Setonji David, who represents Badagry constituency II also resigned his position and was re-elected as the Deputy Chief Whip of the house.

A member of the House from Kosofe Constituency I, Okanlawon Sanni, also tendered his resignation as the Deputy Chief Whip of the House.

“I will never stray from the well-established path of honour and dignity exemplified by my late father, the past Ojora of Lagos,” Meranda said.

“It is with full awareness of my resolve that I announce my decision to resign as speaker of the Lagos state house of assembly, effective March 3, 2025

“This decision was not made lightly; it came after careful deliberation, fully aware of the intrigues surrounding my election as speaker. We are the representatives of the good people of Lagos, entrusted with a mandate to protect our democracy.

“I have chosen to resign to uphold the integrity of this institution. I made history as the first female speaker of the Lagos state house of assembly and deeply cherished the solidarity freely offered to me during my tenure.

“I am sincerely grateful to each of you for your unwavering support throughout my brief time in office. As I step down from the position of speaker, I remain committed to serving the people of Apapa 1 constituency.

“I am not a quitter; I have taken this step to avoid further unnecessary conflict and embarrassment.

“The party’s decision is supreme, and at this juncture, I take a bow as speaker. Thank you all.”

Shortly after her resignation, legislators in attendance re-elected her as deputy speaker, a position she held until her short-lived elevation to the speakership role by her colleagues.

Lagos lawmakers reaffirm support for Meranda

Lagos House of Assembly has condemned the attempt by ousted Speaker, Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, to convene a plenary session with three members.

This move, according to a statement on behalf of the lawmakers by Hon. Stephen Ogundipe (Chairman, House Committee on Informstion Strategy and Security), is a blatant disregard for the rules governing plenary sessions, which require formal notice, a quorum, an approved agenda and the presence of the mace.

Thirty-six pro-Meranda lawmakers in the 40-member house, who passed a vote of confidence in the new speaker, said plots to make the new speaker resign her office for the former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa won’t stand.

    • ‘GAC will resolve crisis’

Security has been beefed up in the the Lagos State House of Assembly, following the return of the former Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, who has rejected his impeachment.

The new House leadership, led by Speaker Mojisola Meranda, has ordered security agents to be on alert to forstall any invasion by aggrieved supporters of the former helmsman from Agege Constituency.

The House leadership,  a source said, has also requested the security agencies to change their officers and men at the Assembly complex.

Obasa returned to Lagos at the weekend, alleging thatche was improperly removed as Speaker by 32 of 40 members of the House while he was in the United States.

He insisted that he is still the Speaker, stressing that the impeachment did not follow the due process.

The lawmakers who removed him instantly appointed his former deputy, Mojisola Meranda, as Speaker.

At the weekend, the lawmakers clarified that Obasa was properly removed.

A source said the Party Leader, who was not properly briefed prior to the impeachment, described the action as a coup, adding that the remark may have somehow emboldened the former Speaker to flex muscles.

However, according to the source, the House has put the impeachment behind it.

Also, Obasa’s aides have left the House premises.

But, the embattled former Speaker is still occupying the official residence of the Speaker at Ikeja.

The source said:”Things would be sorted out administratively. He will vacate the residence in due course. He will also leave the office of the Speaker at the premises for his office as as a floor member.”

A notice by the Acting Clerk of the House, Omotayo Adekemi, to “all staff and legislative aides” said they will be thoroughly checked before they are allowed entry into the premises.

It reads:”Regarding management directives, all staff members and legislative aides must present valid Identity Cards to access the House premises.

“Please, remember that entry will be denied to anyone without a valid Identity Card. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding in this matter.”

    GAC: we will resolve crisis

The Governance Advisory Council (GAC) has wadded into leadership crisis. GAC Secretary Alhaji Mutiu Are, assured that the elders will resolve the internal conflicts through its crisis resolution mechanism.

Are emphasised that the GAC, as the apex advisory organ, will not take sides.

He said: “Whatever is currently going on in Lagos politics is a family affair. As elders, I’m not supposed to take a side.“We would resolve everything because the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), being the apex advisory organ, has its own mechanism in resolving matters like this. By virtue of my position as the secretary of the body, I’m not given express permission to speak on the matter. But I can tell you that we’ll resolve it in a family way.”

Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, a GAC member and two-time minister, criticised APC chieftain Senator Anthony Adefuye for publicly supporting Obasa’s claim that his removal was unconstitutional.

Obanikoro described Adefuye’s statement as unfortunate and inconsequential, arguing that individual GAC members should not express personal opinions on sensitive matters without the council’s official pronouncement.

He said: “The statement of Sen. Adefuye on the removal of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, is very unfortunate, childish and inconsequential.Senator Adefuye’s comment shouldn’t have come up, as leaders, if there are  serious issues of this magnitude, rushing to make press statement or personal statement on such issues is unbecoming of a statesman.

“Since GAC as a unit has not made any pronouncement on the subject matter, it is irresponsible of any member of that privileged body to go public and make comments on an issue that is as sensitive as that.

“Moreso our leader, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, waded in on the matter. So, I believe nobody should come out individually to express an opinion based on privileged status.”
