FG youth empowerment programmes reduced criminalities in Niger Delta – NDYM

The Niger Delta Youth Movement (NDYM) has lauded the Federal Government for various trainings and empowerment programmes for youths in the Niger Delta region.

National President of NDYM, Comrade Major Ekene in a statement said that the FG’s youth intervention programmes have helped in reducing all forms of criminalities in the region.

The group attributed the reduction in cases of militancy, youth restiveness, crude oil theft and all forms of economic sabotage in the region to President Bola Tinubu’s administration, saying youths of the area have never had it so good.

It thanked the Ministry of Regional Development for implementing the laudable initiatives of the Tinubu administration which has resulted in youths undergoing various life-changing skills acquisition trainings.

The statement reads in parts: “The Niger Delta Youth Movement, the umbrella body of all youth in the region, deeply appreciates the Ministry of Regional Development for it’s pragmatic training programmes.

“We pledge our unalloyed solidarity to the continuity of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Presidency for the genuine development policies, projects and programmes for the youths, women and the elderly.

“The youths are passionate about the training, orientation and empowerment programmes under the able watch of Engr. Abubakar Momoh’s ministry of Regional Development.

“The theoretical and practical knowledge of entrepreneurship and mentorship programmes by experienced scholars is really the way to go.

“Reports indicate that some youths have started fish farming, palm oil/palm kernel, piggery businesses and some on cooperative societies, etc and are on the path to self-sufficiency.

“As we look forward to 2025 training and empowerment programmes, we urge the youths to imbibe the entrepreneurship spirit.

“Proper and methodological empowerment of the youths means reduction in crime and criminality including crude oil theft, economic sabotage, et al”.

  • Tinubu’s achievements in Niger Delta will discourage protests in the region – Momoh

Tinubu’s achievements in Niger Delta will discourage protests in the region – Momoh

Minister of Niger Delta Development, Abubakar Momoh, has stated that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu‘s achievements in the Niger Delta region will discourage people from joining the nationwide protests.

Momoh who spoke to State House Correspondents on Wednesday in Abuja, praises President Tinubu’s commitment to the region’s development, citing numerous projects executed within the past year, surpassing previous administrations’ efforts.

He expressed surprise that many Nigerians, especially youths, are unaware of the government’s programme aimed at alleviating their suffering.

The minister highlighted the commissioning of projects in the Niger Delta area, showcasing the administration’s progress and dedication to the region’s development.

Momoh believes that the President’s efforts will make it unnecessary for Niger Delta residents to protest against bad governance, emphasizing the significant impact of the projects on the region.

He, however, said that there is nobody in the country, including the President, that would say that protest is a sin, but the consequences of the actions may not be good for economic development.

“We are very lucky to have the person of President Ahmed Tinubu that is deeply committed towards the overall development of the country, irrespective of the area.

“We know that a number of projects are going on in this country, projects that were never attempted by previous administrations despite the fact that there is lean resources in government now. I am surprise and I wonder if you see what is going on in this administration .

“What we have observed is that it appears the majority of Nigerians and particularly the youths, are not very much conversant with a number of programme put in place to alleviate the suffering of the youths of this very country.

“To start from my end in the Niger Delta Region, I think the President has done a lot for which I don’t think any person who is from the Niger Delta area will deem it necessary to come out and say he’s protesting against bad governance.

“The number of projects that have been executed in the South South region and particularly the Niger Delta region within this one year cannot be compared with what has happened previously in the last four years. For instance recently, you watched us on the screen commissioning projects in the Niger Delta area”, he said.

He said there are quite a number of welfare programme that are ongoing in the region and that the Ministry embarked on empowerment and welfare program for the first time in the history Ministry.

“Today a number of women and youths have benefitted reasonably and today too Mr President has also graciously approved the release of funds to address the flooded area of the Niger Delta and also palliatives for the people of the Niger Delta.

“In addition to what he has done for the State government you are aware that a number of relief materials have been sent through various state governors to the people of Nigeria,” he said.

Momoh added: “On the issue of protest, I don’t think there is anybody including the President of this country who would think protesting is a sin but what we are saying is that in the name of protest, do not come and cause mayhem or destroy the properties of innocent citizens, do not come and cause mayhem because the freedom you have to protest has a limit you do not have freedom to protest and cause destruction

“So the youths, the country is your own, the future is your own. If you destroy what you will live upon in the future then it becomes a serious problems

“I will appeal to the youth of this country to take advantage of the numerous youth programmes Initiated by this government, take advantage of them”, he said.

Expect more legacy projects in Niger Delta – Momoh

The Minister of Niger Delta Development, Abubakar Momoh, has promised that the ministry and the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) would deliver one legacy project after another once the 2024 Budget is implemented.

Speaking at the commissioning of the Iko-Atabrikang-Akata-Opolom-Okoroutip-Iwuochang Road (Section 1) in Akwa Ibom state, Momoh assured Nigerians that “the Ministry and NDDC are poised to deliver one legacy project after another once the 2024 budget is implemented. We are committed to completing all abandoned projects under our purview.”

According to a statement issued by his special assistance on media, Osigwe Omo-Ikirodah, the landmark event was graced by the presence of President Bola Tinubu, represented by the Senate president, Godswill Akpabio, accompanied by a distinguished entourage of senators.

The Iko-Atabrikang-Akata-Opolom-Okoroutip-Iwuochang Road project involves the construction of a 6.7 km two-lane single-carriageway with an asphaltic surface, including a 600-meter span reinforced concrete bridge and side drainage, linking over 20 communities and facilitating trade and economic activities.

“After so many years of yearning for a better Niger Delta Region, the people deserve no less,” Ogbuku said.

  • Why I won’t sit in my office expecting quality projects, by Momoh

Why I won’t sit in my office expecting quality projects, by Momoh

Abubakar Momoh, the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, has conveyed his resolve to ensure the delivery of high-quality projects from both the ministry and the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

He emphasized that he won’t merely stay in his office to achieve quality work.

Momoh stated that he will be actively present in the field to closely monitor and follow up on various projects.

The minister, who expressed satisfaction with the quality of projects executed by the ministry and the NDDC in Calabar, said:  “The administration of President Bola Tinubu believes in quality jobs. Being at the helm of the ministry, I will ensure and insist that the right thing is done.”

Accompanied by the Permanent Secretary, Shuaib Belgore, and Directors from the ministry, the minister inspected internal roads in the Akim Oqua community in Calabar municipality, the office of the ministry in Calabar and Town Hall, and roads at the University of Calabar at the weekend.

After the project inspection, the minister remarked: “We have inspected roads in the city, and we are here at the University of Calabar to examine the network of roads initiated by the NDDC. Many of them have already been constructed, and the pending ones will be completed. I can see that side drains have also been constructed, indicating that these roads will be completed shortly after the rainy season.

“I want to take this opportunity to call on the Managing Director of NDDC to urgently complete these roads at the university as soon as the rains subside.

“I am also very impressed with what I am seeing here—a spacious town hall constructed by the Ministry of Niger Delta Development. These are the kinds of projects we need across the Niger Delta.

“When I assumed office as Minister, my first statement was that the administration of President Bola Tinubu believes in quality projects. Whether it’s a two-kilometre road or more, it should be of top-notch quality, not just constructing several kilometres of roads that deteriorate quickly.

“From what we have seen here, particularly the university roads and adjoining city roads, they are well-constructed and in excellent condition. I am very impressed, and this is the standard I expect to continue. With us overseeing the ministry, we will ensure that the right thing is done, and quality projects are delivered. We now understand that we cannot merely sit in the comfort of our offices and expect quality work; we must inspect projects ourselves – at least, that’s what this journey has afforded us.

“I have seen many projects in the past during inspections in other states, and we often condemn them. However, we are genuinely impressed with what we’re witnessing here”, the minister said.

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof Florence Bisong, expressed her gratitude to the minister for taking the time to visit the university and inspect the projects.

She said: “I feel deeply honoured today to host the Honourable Minister at the University.”

Prof Bisong congratulated the minister on his appointment and extended appreciation to the ministry for its consistent support of the institution. She highlighted the significant improvement in the condition of their major road, previously impassable, thanks to the ministry’s intervention.

She added: “We eagerly anticipate further developments at the University of Calabar, like Oliver Twist.”

On the quality of the projects, Prof Bisong hailed the ministry, stating, “The projects delivered exhibit a high standard, and everyone praises the ministry for this achievement. Even the projects they are currently undertaking are of exceptional quality. The drainage work is up to standard, the road size is perfect, and the town hall meets high-quality standards. We are exceptionally pleased with the results.”

  • Minister Momoh defies rain to inspect projects in Bayelsa

Minister Momoh defies rain to inspect projects in Bayelsa

The Minister for Niger Delta Development Engr. Abubakar Momoh defied heavy rainfall in Rivers and Bayelsa States on Saturday to inspect projects being executed by the ministry.

He said when working with President Bola Tinubu, the demand for results leaves no room for excuses due to rain.

When reporters asked about his decision to embark on the inspection of the ministry’s projects amid heavy rains and his motivations, he stated: “We are working with a president who wants results, and to achieve results, you cannot allow rain or anything else to deter you. Yes, I agree that it started raining when I left Port Harcourt, and it hasn’t stopped raining even here in Bayelsa, but that shouldn’t deter anyone determined to achieve results.

“I have seen the projects here in Odi and Adagbabiri – they are supposed to be beneficial projects for the community – the housing project and oil palm processing plant. However, the unfortunate thing is that when planning these projects, the flooding nature of Bayelsa State was not taken into account. Both of these projects are below water level, rendering them non-functional.”

“For example, when I was told about a sand filling project in Odi, my initial impression was that it was meant to prepare the area for construction. Little did I know that there were already buildings in place. If you decide to sand-fill the area, it would reach the middle of the buildings.

“To make the housing project functional, you’d need to demolish the entire structure and reconstruct it, which means all the money spent there would be wasted because the place is uninhabitable.

“The same issue applies to the oil palm processing plant. If a construction project is below the level of the road, anything done there is futile. Even if you complete and commission such a project, it would serve no purpose other than for the newspapers; it would not function. We couldn’t even inspect the housing and oil processing projects because of the flooding in the project site.”

“I would like to call on the relevant departments involved to consider the flooding nature of the area and other factors when planning projects like these in the future.”

“Since my arrival from Abuja for this working visit, I have seen for myself and have positive news to take back. The inspection of the Onopa canal also took place today, and I am pleased that the natives and traditional ruler confirmed that the project was well-executed. The design I observed convinced me that the work done there was reasonable.”

Regarding his expectations from the NDDC, the minister said, “I expect them to deliver quality projects, focusing on quality rather than quantity. High-quality projects will have a longer lifespan, while substandard ones will collapse within a year or two. I believe the new management will take this message to heart when designing their projects, considering all the factors and issues affecting these two projects – the housing and oil processing projects.”

  • Magu, Momoh, Dabiri-Erewa, others bag awards in U.S.

Malam Ibrahim Magu, Acting Chairman, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has been conferred with the Nigerian American Award as the ‘Anti-Corruption Crusader of the Year’

Magu was conferred with the award in Tampa, Florida, by the Nigerian American Business Forum (NABF) for his efforts in stemming the corrupt business practices and fraudulent financial activities in Nigeria.

Mr John Momoh, Chairman, Channels Media Group and Channels Television, also bagged the ‘Media Personality of the Year’ for his initiative and innovation at the television outfit.

Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, Director-General, National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), was conferred with the ‘Food and Drug Administrator of the Year’ for the transformation she had carried out at NAFDAC within a short period.

Mrs Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, was also conferred with the ‘Most Diaspora Friendly Personality of the Year’.

Other award recipients were Mr Jim Ovia, Chairman of Zenith Bank Plc., who bagged the ‘Banker Personality of the Year’, while Dr Andrew Nevin, bagged the ‘Financial Guru of the Year’.

Chairman of NABF, Dr Afolabi Andu, said the award was instituted to recognise the contributions of Nigerians who are doing their best to change the narratives of the country.

Andu said the forum was primarily established to bridge the gap between Nigerian American based businesses and their home-based counterparts in the public and private sector.

Receiving the award, Magu said taming corruption was the only way forward for Nigeria in its quest for economic development, political stability and social justice.

Represented by Dr Aminu Gusau, Director, Policy, Planning and Statistics at EFCC, Magu appealed to Nigerian diasporas to join hands with the Buhari’s administration’s efforts at fighting corruption.

Magu warned Nigerians abroad against helping looters to hide their loots.

“I must make a categorical appeal to Nigerian diasporas that under no circumstance should you aid or abet foreign business partners to undermine our anti-corruption laws and processes.

“You should not help looters to hide their money abroad or help them in illegitimate fronting arrangements.

“It is worthy to note that Nigeria has been the leading country in the international fight for assets recovery and has been most triumphant in partial returns of the loots,” Magu said.

Similarly, the NAFDAC boss, who was also a speaker at the NABF conference, said that 65 per cent of medical products were being imported into Nigeria.

Adeyeye regretted that majority of sub-standard products were imported into the country, adding that there were compromises too among NAFDAC officials.

She explained that she inherited N3.2 billion debt at the agency, which she reduced to zero within a year of her stewardship.

She said the absence of NAFDAC at the Nigerian Ports from 2011 to 2018, was largely responsible for the unchecked importation of tramadol that was now killing many youths in the country.

  • Ethnic politics killing Nigeria, says Momoh

•Public-Private Partnership will reduce unemployment -Babalola

Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of Channels Television, Mr. John Momoh, has identified ethnic politics as the major problem retarding the growth of Nigeria.

Momoh regretted that merit, competence and pedigree of candidates are being sacrificed for primordial sentiments like which ethnic or cultural group contestants for public offices come from.

This, he said, was one of the reasons the country is beset with bad leadership at all levels and made unity and national integration that would have served as springboard for its development elusive.

Momoh spoke yesterday while delivering the 6th convocation lecture at the AfeBabalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), which was also attended by Minister of Communication, Mr. Adebayo Shittu, among others.

The Channels boss and the President of African Development Bank (AfDB), Dr. AkinwumiAdesina, will be conferred with honorarydoctorate degrees at the grand finale of the 6th convocation scheduledfor today (Sunday).

The lecture was titled: “Deconstructing the Nigerian Conundrum as a Panacea for National Cohesion and Transformation.”

The Chairman of the Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria (BON) said there was urgent need for Nigerians to rebuild their psychology to increase belief in common good and better disposition to nationalism.

Momoh said: “The lack of unity among us led to the formations of ArewaConsultative Forum, OhanaezeNdigbo andOoduaPeoples Congress and they are all waxing stronger. Each of these ethnic groupings speaks for their people, none speaks for Nigeria. They only talk about their ethnic nationalities.

“If we look at what is happening to us today, we will see that ethnicity is a negative value. It has contributed nothing but disunity in diversity, as ethnic groups are closer and their interest are of priority than national interest,” he said, adding,

“The only way we can navigate out of this conundrum is by finding a platform where national interest can be promoted and this will start with harnessing the potentials of our youths.”

Momoh urged the Nigerian youths to look inwards and use their talents to rule their world like their contemporaries in other climes.

In his remarks, Chancellor/Founder, ABUAD, Aare AfeBabalola, warned Nigerian leaders and politicians to desist from using the youth to fan the embers of disunity but to empower them to positively contribute to nation building.

Babalola expressed dismay the country is in crisis of unemployment today owing to that widespread belief that one can only be successful if on the payroll of the government.

He said: “Nigeria is in crisis of unemployment today, because graduates only think of getting employments with their certificates. Instead of this, think of what you can do on your own to help your situation,” he advised.

He also said, “What I believe should be in vogue now is Private Public Participation, because government can’t employ everybody. Don’t think of how much you can earn from government, but what you can make on your own. This accounted for why everybody sees politics as a lucrative business.

“Nigeria is a country of nations, with diverse interests and people, so the only thing that can bridge the gap is functional education. If we can have three or four schools like ABUAD, Nigeria will be better for it.”

  • Buhari has not disappointed Nigerians, says Momoh

Buhari has not disappointed Nigerians, says Momoh

Former Information Minister and All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain Prince Tony Momoh, in this interview with reporters in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), speaks on the Buhari administration, the crisis in ruling party and other partisan issues. Excerpts:

You allegedly said Nigerians should stone APC leaders, if the party failed to perform after two years. Did you actually make that statement?

Yes, I said so.  I said if APC does not perform. In fact, the interview where I made the statement is still on my website. I said if things did not go as usual, I am quite sure we will perform by 2019. I also granted another interview where I said if in two years we do not perform, we should be stoned.  Though it is not yet two years that this government was sworn-in, I am now telling you that we cannot be stoned because we have performed. To me, President Buhari has performed creditably well. To some others, even if the people of Mars say the president has performed, I know of others in Nigeria who will still not agree that the president has performed. So, I am confidently saying that as at now, nobody can say Buhari has not performed and this is before the end of his first two years in office.  Now, we promised to secure Nigeria. We also said that we will stabilise the land through infrastructural development and then, there will be prosperity. So, the campaign foccused on tackling insecurity, fighting corruption and also reviving the economy. In the area of insecurity, there were 14 local governments under the control of Boko Haram in Borno state. As things were going, if Buhari had not been elected president, by now, many of us would have run away or died because Boko Haram would have taken over Abuja. Today, where is Boko Haram? In the latest video posted by Shekau, there were four people behind him and a voice supporting what he was saying but you can’t see the crowd. It is obvious that Boko Haram is finished. Gone are the days when they will decimate a whole village and hoist their flags. So, in the area of security, nobody can say that we have not performed.

    What about corruption?

In the area of corruption, nobody can say that we have not tried. The fear of the EFCC today is the beginning of wisdom for corrupt ones. Everybody who has anything to hide is jittery of the EFCC, if not on the run.  On the economy, nobody can now say Nigeria solely depends on oil. Everybody now sees agriculture emerging. People are now going to the farm.  In fact, many of the farmers today are smiling to the banks. Another thing that people are not looking at is what is happening in the Southeast. I am confidently saying that a lot of our votes in 2019 will come from the southeast. Then, Enugu- Onitsha road was not addressed for the four years that Goodluck Jonathan was there. Enugu-Port Harcourt road was also not addressed.  They were singing songs about Second Niger Bridge and not much was done. The erosion sites were all and neglected. Now, these issues involved a lot of capital and are now being addressed in the Southeast. Many leaders in the Southeast are seeing what APC is doing and are now moving in droves to the APC to help galvanise support for the party. So, we are performing and I am saying nobody can say they want to stone us if they are real in their assessment in the area of security, fighting corruption, and in the development of the economy.

You said the fear of EFCC is the beginning of wisdom. What do you make of the rejection of Acting EFCC Chairman; Ibrahim Magu for a second time even after President Buhari has given him a clean bill of health?

All these are areas of lack of understanding.  The Senate, whether we like it or not, is to do the confirmation of those that the constitution says should be confirmed by the senate. People like ministers, ambassadors, judges etc. But, those not to be confirmed by the Senate are those the president can appoint for himself. The constitution shares power among the organs of government: the legislature, the executive and the judiciary. So, if you want to know the limit of your power, you go to the constitution and point to the section that grants you that power. Specifically on Magu, if the senate refuses to confirm, that does not mean the powers of the president to appoint is removed. The senate can refuse to confirm him 100 million times and the president can send the name to the senate 100 million times. He can be Acting EFCC chairman for 100 thousand years, if he lives up to that time. So, there is no problem at all if we understand what we are supposed to do.

What do you make of the decision of the senate asking the president to replace him with another person?

That is why I said everyone must know the limit of his power. They cannot dictate to the president what to do. You can only reject him for confirmation. The president knows what to do next. If the president likes, he can send his name to the senate one million times. if he likes he can replace him with another person.

There is this general belief that  President Buhari has lost control of his government to the cabals. What do you make of this?

All these show how much interest there is in the affairs of the EFCC. The EFCC is breaking bones right, left, front and centre and it is natural that some people will feel uncomfortable about that. If there is more than one report from the presidency on Magu, I have no hesitation to say it is indiscipline. But that doesn’t mean that the president has lost control. Everybody who knows the president knows that he gives responsibilities and then gives you the authorization. He is not those who will ask you to do something and will not give you the free hand to do it. That is his own way of governance. During his time as military head of state, his second-in-command, the late Tunde Idiagbon was very visible but that doesn’t imply that Buhari was not in control because he was the one who gave Idiagbon the work he did. The same thing is happening with Osinbajo today. Now, compared that to what happened between Obasanjo and Atiku between 2003 -2007. Buhari will always allow others to do job. There are some people who become envious because their subordinates are succeeding; not Buhari. He doesn’t compete with his subordinates and I tell you nobody is competing with him. The loyalty to him is total.

What is the way out of the face-off between the Senate and the Presidency?

There is no stand-off between the presidency and the senate. You know, all these things are routine in democracy. People may try to exceed their powers, but the beauty of democracy is that you put them where they belong. What powers do they have to summon Prof. Sagay? People have been quoting Tony Momoh vs the Senate. When I was the editor of Daily Times, the National Assembly invited me because we wrote something in the Grapevine column titled ‘MPs, Senators and Cards’. We said that some elected people, the highest elected body in Nigeria, should behave to sustain the image of that height because some of them will go to banks to seek loans. When they ask them for collateral, they will bring complimentary cards. They were not many that do this, but few. So, we pointed to this that they should be called to order. They became angry and started debating Tony Momoh and said I should come to tell them who among them were doing so.  I told them I am not coming and I went to court that the invitation be quashed because the sergeant-at-arms has the powers of the Commissioner of Police. They can arrest you if you refuse to come. By the time the issue came up for hearing, they had withdrawn the invitation. I still went to court and the court addressed the powers of the senate, which is anchored in the constitution. I am a private citizen, editor of Daily Times. In fact, the senate invited me earlier because we said their salary was too high. They said we should come and tell them our salary in Daily Times. I said I am not coming for the fact that the Managing Director of Daily Times, Dele Cole, was sent from the Cabinet Office to be the MD. So, I said since he is a public officer, he can go. He went. It is not that one is stubborn by not going, but they have no right to call me to tell you what my salary is. I refused to go and the court told them the limit of their powers.

So, Prof. Sagay was right when he said they have no powers to summon him?

Of course! Why should they summon him? He has freedom of speech. He can say what he likes. If anybody is angry, then, they should take him to court. How can they ask him to appear before them? That is not their power. The power to call people for adjudication belongs to the judiciary. You can’t be a judge in your own case.

Many of your supporters are angry that they worked for this party, yet they are not being taken care of almost two years after the party came into power. Some even argued that many supporters of the PDP are still holding crucial positions in the government. What is your take on this?

About 73 million persons were registered to vote. We had 15 million votes and all of them are entitled to positions. But, how many positions are available? Everybody wants to be recognised for what they have done, but how many positions are there? My area of concern is to create an environment where people can do what they know how to do best. Not everybody can take political positions. Having said that, many APC members are angry especially because PDP people ought to have been removed but the fact is that Buhari is a democrat that annoys many other democrats because many other democrats are not tolerant. Democracy is anchored on the rule of law. Many of this people you call PDP members are there because of statutory position of their being there. If they have senate clearance to be there for years, you can’t remove them. I know some people may not like what I want to say now, but the truth is that many of these so-called PDP members who are holding positions are Nigerians. What if they have services to render and they are delivering in their positions? Should we move them out? This is my personal opinion.

What is your reaction to the release of the 2019 election timetable by the INEC?

INEC did not release anything. It only says you can predict the election that we will have in 2023, 2027 and even 2031. If you look at the constitution, it says the election must be conducted by a particular period before swearing in. That is the way to look at it. Anybody can work it out. There is nothing about heating up the polity. Politicians always heat up the polity. The fact is that Nigerians never end politicking. When elections are over, governance begins. Everybody is aware of this but they play politics throughout, which is wrong. This is the time for governance, not politics but some people are playing politics. Some people are even already consulting that I want to be this and that. Yet, they don’t know if they will live till then. Why do you think there was so much noise about the president’s illness? Some were even praying for him to die. It happened in the time of Yar;Adua, it happened in the time of Obasanjo. It also happened during the time of Azikiwe.

Will you advise the president to run in 2019, given his current state of health?

Am I the one to advise him? The president is entitled to two terms and then, he defeated all other candidates in the primary and his ticket to run between 2015 and 2019 was not negotiated. If he had said he will only do one term, then, one can start discussing whether he should seek re-election or not. The man is elected until 2019. At that time, God willing, he will express his intention. In 2011, he said he wasn’t interested anymore, but a lot of people pushed him to be interested and he ran. So, even if he says he is not interested in 2019 now, by that time, people will push him to be interested. And based on his performance, I don’t think even if he wants to go, people will allow him to go.

As a chieftain of the APC, are you happy with the way the affairs of the party are being managed?

Absolutely no. There are lot of problems in running the party. You can’t run the party without money. For instance, all the governors ought to be paying something every month. All the elected members ought to be paying something every month. The NASS ought to be paying something every month. All political appointees ought to be paying something every month to run the party. But, how much have they paid? You can’t run the party without money. Who is going to fund the party? It is as simple as that. That is the first basic thing. The party organs are all there; about 14 to 18 party organs from polling units, through the wards to local government, state, geo-political level and then, the national. All these are party men and they need to fund the party. Look at the Edo and Ondo elections. How much did the party give? Once someone has the ticket, the party takes over. But, the APC has no money to take over. So, people just blame the party for nothing. Democracy is not a child’s play. The key thing is money. The other one is organization and you can’t organise without money. Money is the fundamental thing.

  • Buhari ‘ll not fail to deliver on his promises, says Momoh

Buhari ‘ll not fail to deliver on his promises, says Momoh

Prince Tony Momoh is a veteran journalist and politician. Recently,  he spoke with Osemwengie Ogbemudia in Auchi, Edo State on why President Mohammadu Buhari can not afford to fail Nigerians and other partisan issues.

COULD you shed light on the economic directions of the Buhari administration?

You have heard the President say he is the one that Nigerians voted for and he is responsible to them, not to me or you. He is not owned by anybody and he was there between 1983 and 1985, he has experienced it, he is the only one who came since independence to be President of Nigeria and succeeded. No other one. Tafawa Balewa wanted to be a broadcaster. He became Prime Minister. Alhaji Shehu Shagari, wanted to become a senator; he became President, Obasanjo was in prison praying to be released. At the end of the day, he became President, Late Yar‘Adua wanted to retire to lecture in Ahmadu Bello University. He became president. Jonathan was taken from Bayelsa to Abuja and made Vice-President and later, became acting president and president. Buhari went into politics and wanted to be president in 2003, he failed. 2007 he failed and 2015, he succeeded. Do you think that this type of person will be rushed into doing things he don’t believe will make Nigerians grow? I can assure you no.

There are three steps in Buhari’s scheme, S+S=P that is the equation. S is for security. He will secure Nigeria. The other S is for stability. He will stabilise Nigeria through infrastructural development and the outcome of security and stability is prosperity and Nigeria will prosper.

At the end of the day, if Buhari doesn’t perform, stone us. He is going to perform. When people begin to appoint ministers for him, programme economic measures for him, begin to tell him what will happen in the education sector and other ministries, you give the impression that he came to be the President without preparing. I can assure you he is prepared to hold office by coming out with a book called ‘Project Nigeria’ and that book he has always had since 2002 when he entered politics and he is going to implement this programme.

How can the President warm himself to the people of the Southsouth?

Because he is going to develop their area more than the PDP ever did. Buhari knows where he wants Nigeria to be and he has the opportunity to do it now and please, let him. We are talking of four years and it has not gotten to one year yet and people are saying he is very slow. One thing people don’t know is that those who are corrupt, those who did money laundering, those who diverted all sort of things, they know where the heat is.

This Bank Verification Number (BVN), I don’t know how it works, but it is revealing a lot of things. If you have one bank account, the thing will reveal all the commitments you have. I don’t know how it works, but the government seems to be finding out where people have hidden money more than any other time in our history. I am not in that group. I am doing investigation, but a lot of things are coming out and a lot of things are being done. Those who are under the heat suffer the heat.

He believes that anybody who took Nigeria’s money must return all the money, and should be punished for taking the money and denying the people of facilities they would have had, if the money was used for them. Look at what is happening with arms. People collected billions of dollars and sat down to share the money and people where dying in the Northeast, those who had no arms with them ran into Cameroon. They put them under court marshal and sentenced them to death and they didn’t give them arms. When they are dealing with such people, Nigerians are saying it is because they are in government.

Those in government are the ones stealing the money. Those in the APC had no access. So, will you say because there was no APC among the PDP that had the opportunity to serve Nigeria that pocketed the money should not be dealt with. Buhari has said he is not against anybody, but everybody must bear consequences of their actions and when things are happening as media men find out why it is affecting your friend or colleague.

The Federal Government has received some stolen funds from looters. Who are they?

The government doesn’t talk. It is the media that talks, and you are given the responsibility to monitor governance on behalf of the people.

Sovereignty belongs to the people of Nigeria and through the constitution, the government generates its power and authority. The motto of government is keep our secret, secret and the motto of the journalist is published and be dammed, but you publish the truth. I have been editor, I have been a trainer of journalists and trainer of trainers of journalists and there is no where people volunteered information that was not meant to enhance their own status.

So, if the government has been talking about people who have returned looted money, find out because you have protection. Go and find out if any money has been recovered, go and find out how much it is, find out who returned it.

Is is lawful for government to publish the names of suspected looters?

They can be sued. The point I am making is that, yes, the people have the right to know and the people have the right to be told who does the telling.

What is your advice to the Edo APC as it prepares for next year’s governorship election?

Look, there will be rancour-free primaries in Edo State. The APC doesn’t impose candidates and nobody is going to impose candidate. Anybody who wants to be governor in Edo State should go to the delegates who will vote. Voting will be free and fair and nobody will be forced to vote. I have heard that the governor wants to impose a candidate, but he is not going to impose any candidate and nobody has the right to impose any candidate. He will ensure a level play field and the party will also ensure it. It is not the governor who will conduct the primaries, but why are people so pre-occupied to rundown Oshiomhole. He will not impose candidates and if he does, we have the right to vote our choice candidate because voting will be free, fair and secret. So,  why will anybody think the governor will look at his shoulder while voting? He is not imposing any candidate. He has no candidate of his own, and if he has any candidate, he is only exercising his right as a person not as a governor to force you to do what you don’t want to do.

You said Nigeria has a special anointing to be united. Could you recognise this statement with the agitation in the Southeast that they want to go?

What of Northeast, you know where God has a programme, Satan is always at work, darkness is always at work, but the work of the darkness is always temporary and God’s anointing is permanent. You can delay it, but you can’t subvert it. When America said Nigeria will collapse, I said Nigeria will not collapse, but they are correct in their prediction. But, in Gods anointing Nigeria is the only county packaged in the first half of the last century that has not collapse.

All other federations worldwide have collapsed; the USSR, Slovakia, but Nigeria has not collapse because Nigeria is packaged to help grow the earth and the young ones will be the one to do it. Nigerians are knocking on the door of paradise only them are in the forefront of doing so.

What is your take on the agitation for the sovereign state of Biafra?

They have the right to protest as any other group has the right to protest because that is their own reaction to what they considered as injustice. But, the fact is that protest has a limitation, there is what they call free speech. If in exercising your freedom to speech, you punch my nose, that’s where your freedom ends and if people say they are expressing themselves and start destroying people’s car, there is a body set up to ensure people are free.

Those cars you destroyed, those building you scattered, those people you killed, did they wrong you? So, in doing what you do, ensure you do it in accordance with the law. All over the world people protest, but you don’t molest people when you are protesting because if you do, you have no right to the freedom you claim. I myself will rise to my feet. So, I sympathise with them. That is freedom of expression they are exercising, but when it is destructive, then, it will not allowed.

Can the APC retain  Edo next year?

We will work hard and win the election and if we don’t, it means we didn’t work hard. But, no rigging. Nobody is going to rig election any more. Look at Kogi and Bayelsa. The President has told them he will ensure that there is justice in the preparation and execution of election and he has warned the INEC not to compromise and ensure that there is a level playing ground and that the elections are free, fair and transparent. So, anybody who loses the election should congratulates the one that wins.
