    Monaco recall Echiejile

    Super Eagles left back Elderson Echiejile has been recalled from his loan spell at Belgian First Division A club Standard Liege.

    Echiejile was named in the Standard Liege roster for a training camp in Spain, in the Marbella region, but has since resumed training with Monaco, where he is expected to remain until the end of the season.

    During his brief spell in Belgium, the defender made only six appearances in the Jupiler Pro League, logging 540 minutes.

    His contract with the Principality side will expire on June 30, 2018.

    Monaco open transfer talks for Okechukwu

    French Ligue 1 club, AS Monaco has opened discussions for Nigeria U-23 captain, Azubuike Okechukwu.

    The midfielder is currently playing for Yeni Malatyaspor in the Turkish PTT1 League, but following an impressive debut season in Europe, he is now a target for several European clubs, with Monaco understood to be ahead of the queue.

    The French outfit, africanFootball.com gathered has opened discussions with Malatyaspor, after failing with an initial bid during the January transfer window.

    Claude Makelele has left his position as technical director of Monaco by mutual consent, the Ligue 1 club have confirmed.

    The former France international was appointed in January, following a disappointing six-month spell in charge of Bastia in 2014.

    Monaco – who finished third in Ligue 1 in 2015-16, earning a place in the play-offs for next season’s Champions League – announced Makelele’s departure on Monday.

    “AS Monaco and Claude Makelele announced today the completion of their co-operation by mutual agreement,” a statement read.

    “The club would like to thank the former French international for the work undertaken since his arrival. AS Monaco can only wish the best for Claude in his future endeavors.”

    “I thank the club and [vice president] Vadim Vasilyev for the confidence they placed in me by offering me the chance to join AS Monaco,” Makelele said. “Our destinies are separated but I wish AS Monaco the best for the future.”

    “Claude is a professional and a man of great level. He brought his experience, particularly on structure of the academy,” added Vasilyev.

    “I’m sure he has a lot to give in football and he will always be welcome in Monaco. Neither the club nor he managed to find the ideal position within the sports structure. He was honest enough to open up to me about this and we decided together to end the collaboration on good terms. ”

    Top French Ligue 1 club AS Monaco has tabled a bid for Nigeria U-20 star, Samuel Chukwueze, after his proposed switch to Arsenal fell through.

    The dazzling winger has already been courted by Portuguese giants FC Porto.

    “Monaco has made Chukwueze a good offer and it is left for his academy to decide on it now,” a source told africanFootball.com on Monday.

    “The owner of the academy just returned from Europe at the weekend or so and a decision will be taken shortly.”

    Two French giants will lock horn on Friday night when Monaco and Olympique Lyon clash in the French Ligue 1 matchday 10.

    Monaco has only collected two points from four matches at home this season, but is unbeaten away from home with three wins and two draws. The principality club currently lies in 10th place on the log.

    Lyon on the other hand occupy 6th place in the league table with 15 points after nine matches, just two points ahead of tonight’s opponent.

    Monaco will be without the suspended centre-half pairing of Ricardo Carvalho and Andrea Raggi and are tipped to be replaced by Wallace and Jérémy Toulalan.

    Fabio Coentrao, Nabil Dirar, Elderson Echiéjilé, Bernardo Silva and Tiemoué Bakayoko are doubtful for tonight’s encounter due to knocks they picked up while on international duty.

    Monaco will also have to make do without midfielder Adama Traoré for several months, the Malian international fractured his right ankle in Monday’s training.

    Olympique Lyon will be without Aldo Kalulu, the youngster sustained an ankle injury in training this week and is expected to be sidelined for two months.

    Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa will return to the starting XI in place of Milan Bisevac, who is sidelined with a thigh injury he picked up before the international break.

    Monaco has won three of the last five fixtures between these two teams, Lyon winning one and the other ended in a draw.

    This fixture is expected to be a highly entertaining affair and definitely a game of the weekend in France.

    Ibrahimovic, Di Maria in PSG squad for Monaco clash

    PARIS Saint-Germain coach Laurent Blanc has confirmed that Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Angel di Maria are in the squad for Sunday’s clash with Monaco.

    Ibrahimovic has not made a Ligue 1 appearance for PSG this season because of a knee problem sustained in the Trophee des Champions win over Lyon at the beginning of the month, while a hamstring injury has prevented Di Maria from making his debut for the club following his move from Manchester United.

    Despite their absences, Blanc’s men have started their title defence with three straight wins, but their return to fitness will provide PSG with a welcome boost for an away game with a team they have not beaten in the league since 2007.

    “Ibrahimovic will be in the group to face Monaco,” Blanc said. “We’ll see if he starts the game or not.

    “We need to be more effective offensively. Di Maria will bring a huge amount of technicality to our game.”

    Echiejile leads Monaco to pre-season draw

    Super Eagles defender, Elderson Echiejile, captained AS Monaco to a goalless draw with Paris FC in a pre-season friendly on Saturday.

    The ex-Braga defender started and finished the game in which Mali U-20 star Adama Traore, who cost Monaco a whooping 14 million Euros, starred against the French second division outfit, africanFootball.com reports.

    Traore was the Most Valuable Player of the FIFA U-20 World Cup in New Zealand, where Mali finished third.

    Cote d’Ivoire international striker, Lacina Traore, was also given a chance to lead the Monaco attack after he was sidelined by a long-term injury.

    He struggled and was later replaced by new signing Stephan El Shaarawy.

    CHAMPIONS LEAGUE QUARTER FINALS: Elderson in Monaco’s squad

    Elderson Echiejile has been named in Monaco’s squad for today’s UEFA Champions League clash away at Italian champions Juventus.

    Elderson is the only Nigeria star still left in the Champions League this season.

    Tunisia defender Aymen Abdennour and Burkina Faso star Alain Traore have also been named on the squad.

    On Friday, Elderson was on for the full duration as Monaco won 3-0 at Caen in continuation of the French Ligue 1.

    Monaco saw off Arsenal in the Round of 16 on the away goals rule after aggregate scores stood at 3-3 to set up a clash with Juventus, who eliminated Borussia Dortmund of Germany 5-1 on aggregate.

    The return leg is fixed for April 22.

    Monaco eyeing Ghana starlet

    Portuguese daily newspaper Record has learned that French giants Monaco are keeping close tabs on Vitoria Guimaraes midfielder Bernard.

    The French club recently turned their attention towards signing young and talented footballers, and the 20-year-old starlet is the latest player on their radar.

    Having been impressed with the youngster’s performances in Portuguese Primeira Liga, the Principality club are reportedly readying a January bid for his services.

    Bernard started his professional career at Vitoria Guimaraes and he went on to score 8 goals in 26 matches for the reserve side last season.

    The attacking midfielder did well to nail down a regular starting berth this term and he has been in stunning form, netting 4 times in 8 league appearances.

    Bernard scored the only goal for his side in a 1-1 draw with giants FC Porto, converting a second-half penalty to earn his club one point.
