  • Govt, monarch bicker over land

The Lagos State government has accused Oba  Bashir Oloruntoyin Saliu of Oworonsoki of illegal sale of land in his domain.

But, the monarch has denied the allegation, saying the land being sold belongs to his family.

In a public notice, Permanent Secretary, Lands Bureau, Mr Hakeem Muri-Okunola, said: “The attention of the government has been brought to the following illegal activities taking place in Oworonsoki Foreshore/Government Scheme in Kosofe Local Government Area of Lagos State; illegal sales of land by persons, family, traditional institution falsely making claims of ownership to government  land and selling same to unsuspecting members of the public, who have failed or refused to check the status of the land being offered for sale from relevant agencies of government.

“All illegal activities aforementioned including harassment of government allottees and government officials should stop forthwith and any other person (individual, corporate or traditional institution) dealing in any of such illegality shall, henceforth, be promptly sanctioned accordingly and in line with all applicable / relevant provisions of the law.”

At his palace over the weekend, Oba Saliu said: “The traditional institution under my watch is law abiding. We are not illegal land sellers and there is no one involved in the sale of government landed property in my domain. The land that my family is selling is the 5.171 hectares allotted to me on behalf of the Saliu Salami Rufai Family, which is covered by a Certificate of Occupancy, C of O, signed by the Lagos State governor, Mr Babatunde Raji Fashola, SAN, on July 3, 2009.”

“The 5.171 hectares of land were allotted to us, following an Ikeja High Court judgment on October 12, 1994, in suit number ID/390/93. The land was allotted to my family being the original settlers in the community and following a term of settlement ratified by the court as a result of a suit my family filed against Lagos State government. As a matter of fact, we don’t sell our land but lease it out to people. We want to use the land to establish a world class estate like those that can be found in the high brow areas of Lagos State.”

Oba Saliu asked the Lands Bureau to check its record properly before accusing his family of indiscretion.

  • Monarch hails peace accord

he traditional ruler of Okahia in Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State HRM Eze Okey Ananaba has praised the state police command for initiating a peace accord signed in Umuahia, the state capital, by party candidates.

The peace pact was to ensure a hitch-free election in the state, the state Police Commissioner, Habila Joshak said.

It was unclear whether the peace deal was inspired by a similar agreement reached earlier by presidential candidate of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Dr Goodluck Jonathan and his counterpart in the foremost opposition party, the All Progressives Congress Party (APC), General Muhammadu Buhari.

Speaking at his palace when the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Dr. Alex Otti visited him, Eze Ananaba said the accord would have no meaning except it was enforced.

The revered monarch admonished politicians to shun violence, urging them to play politics with the spirit of sportsmanship.

He said, “What is of paramount importance to the traditional rulers is the peaceful conduct of the elections,” adding, there would be no meaningful development in an atmosphere of violence and rancour.

The monarch also called on registered voters in the state to endeavour to collect their permanent voter cards or PVCs in order to vote the candidates of their choice, urging them “to cast their votes according to their conscience on the day of the elections.”

Otti promised to run an all-inclusive and people-oriented government if elected into office.

He assured that his administration would ensure even development of the state, promising not to discriminate against any section of the state.

“I will give everybody a sense of belonging and there will be even development across the different parts of the state,” he said. “I will not discriminate against any person or section of the state, whether they voted for me or not.”

The former Diamond Bank MD beckoned on the monarch to sensitize his subjects on the need to get their PVCs and feel free to vote for the candidates of their choice.

“People should collect their PVCs and vote according to their conscience, he said, adding that they should not allow themselves to be intimidated by anybody.

Otti said that he joined the governorship race in order to redeem the people.

Monarch urges politicians to be honest

CHAIRMAN of the Yoruba Council of Elders in Ogun West, High Chief Bamgboye Akanni Osunlabu, has urged politicians to be honest and transparent if elected.

Speaking with The Nation at the weekend, Osunlabu, who is the Ekerin of Ota, Ogun State, said the tension in the country was caused by failed promises by politicians.

According to him, the type of tension and problems across the country today was only witnessed in the era of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo and the late Chief Ladoke Akintola.

He decried leaders, who forgot the campaign promises after their elections.

Osunlabu said the country had advanced politically, adding that the era of godfatherism has gone. “It will be difficult for the electorate to re-elect any politician who does not fulfill his promises in his first tenure,” the monach said.

He noted that most indigenes in Ado-Odo Ota Local Government Area were unemployed, despite being the most populous and industrialised area in the state.

His words: “We have a lot of industries, but despite this, our youths are jobless.”

According to him, Nigerians needed not just a leader, but leaders who will serve with the fear of God and tackle societal problems, such as unemployment, power outage, bad roads, food scarcity and others.

Osunlabu noted that most people ventured into politics to enrich themselves, adding that to serve people should not be a do-or-die affair.

He said any political aspirant, who borrowed money or sold property to win election will not serve the people, rather he would embezzle money.

He urged Nigerians to vote for the right candidate in the coming elections and shun dubious politicians.

The Ekerin Ota appealed to youths to avoid being used as thugs so that peace will reign during and after the elections.

The royal father urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to intensify the distribution of the Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) in the state, even as he advised the electorate to collect their cards and perform their civic duties during the polls..

  • Why I am a successful monarch, by Alaafin

Why I am a successful monarch, by Alaafin

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III, is a traditional ruler who is well at home with the history, culture and tradition of the Yoruba people. A meeting with him promises to be not only enriching but spiritually and philosophically uplifting as BODE DUROJAIYE found out when he had a brief chat with the first class monarch.

After 47 years on the throne, the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III, has revealed the reasons behind his success.

Speaking with The Nation during a brief encounter recently after the commissioning of some projects he donated to some communities in his domain, the monarch attributed his successful reign to the immortal words of the Scottish-born scientist, Alexander Graham Bell, which serves as the driving force behind his success.

Quoting the inventor of the first telephone, Oba Adeyemi said: “The most successful men in the end are those whose success is the result of steady accretion… It is the man who carefully advances step by step, with his mind becoming wider and wider – and progressively better able to grasp any theme or situation -persevering in what he knows to be practical, and concentrating his thought upon it, who is bound to succeed in the greatest degree”.

The first class monarch opined that “a traditional ruler should be seen as the perfect embodiment of the culture of the place, as well as the synthesis of the aspirations and goals of the nation. This is not only in social values of veracity, egalitarianism, justice and democracy; but in actions and deeds”.

He pointed out that it was to his credit that a great number of his colleague Obas across Yorubaland are what they are in status today, having used his position as a highly revered monarch, his robust sense of history, powerful writing skills and consideration for fellow human beings to advance their causes.

‘’Alaafin relies heavily on the will and wishes of his subjects. In politics also, he is concerned about the sanctity of his position, whatever happens and the welfare of his people. Thus, to secure his support, a politician must convince him of offering his exalted position the highest degree of dignity, respect and honour it deserves as well as the care of his people through the usual dividends of democracy”. He said.

A monarch with class, Oba Adeyemi is an enigma by every standard and a chance meeting with him was like an expository adventure through a school of history.

The very urbane monarch, who worked as an insurance officer before heeding the natural call of the gods, through the Oyomesi to ascend the throne of his fore-fathers as the Alaafin of Oyo Kingdom is a man at home with himself at all times, as he exudes confidence in all his dealings.

One enviable highpoint in the life of this great monarch is his deep knowledge and high sense of recalling historic events with facts and figures; and with an accuracy that will beat the imagination of youthful intellectuals.

The foremost traditional ruler is of the conviction that a people without a cultural identity of their own would be lost in the forward march of world history and their contributions to human civilization forgotten very easily.

A prolific writer especially in the area of Yoruba and world history, Oba Adeyemi had been guest speaker at numerous forums organized by professional bodies and groups. Of great importance were two of such articles written as far back as 1968, which have today become fulfilled prophecies. The first was “I Shall Be Great” and the second “I Shall Be The Next Alaafin”.

Barely a week after the second article was written, the young Adeyemi was selected as the Alaafin-elect by six out of the seven members of the Oyo-Mesi in March, 1968. That marked the beginning of his tortuous journey to the exalted throne. And so at a tender age of 32, he became Alaafin Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III.

Oba Adeyemi who had clocked 77 has taken traditional leadership to another level, using his exposure, wealth and power to benefit his people and mankind.

The immediate family of the late Sam Ojebode, a former skipper of defunct IICC Shooting Stars Football Club of Ibadan, will forever be grateful to the Kabiyesi for building and furnishing a house for them in the memory of their late father and husband.

The Alaafin has displayed a great deal of ingenuity in bringing touches of modernity to the ancient Oyo Palace without losing its traditional essence, a development that has turned the place to a tourist centre.

This touch is not only about the infrastructure and architectural design of the Palace, but also about the individuals that have statutory and traditional functions in the Palace.

He has made life more comfortable for his people both with the township and core villages.

In 1979, the Federal Government honoured Oba Adeyemi with the national award of Commander Federal Republic (CFR), and a year later the same government appointed him the pioneer Chancellor of the former University of Sokoto, now Uthman Dan Fodio University, Sokoto, a position he

held for a record time of 12 years of three terms.

Alaafin not only uplifted the ivory tower to enviable heights, but requested for a slot of ten candidates to be offered scholarship from his personal purse annually. All together the paramount ruler sponsored 120 students to study courses of their interests at the university before he completed his tenure as the Chancellor.

An intellectual in his own class, Oba Adeyemi does not only impresses the knowledgeable audience, where he had been invited to speak,  with his mastery of colonial history, but his captivating speeches usually attract rounds of standing ovations that leave the audience wondering if he is indeed a monarch or a visiting  professor of African History.

During festivals, especially Id-el Kabir,  indigenes of the ancient Oyo town across the country, including the residents, irrespective of their religious inclinations are eager to come home and witness how their cherished monarch blend religion with tradition.

A paramount ruler with deep compassion and unrivaled generosity, Alaafin uses what God has endowed him with to touch the lives of the people.

No fewer than twenty-two communities, including township and villages had benefitted from his unusual gestures. The benefits include erection of electric poles and transformers, provision of micro-finances free of charge, construction of boreholes, garri processing centres with equipments and construction of blocks of classrooms. All these amenities were solely financed by the Kabiyesi.

Notable among the communities were, Ilora, Akeetan Titun, Molaba, Araromi, Isokun, Olorunda, Sangodeyi, Soku,Ote-Efon and Aba-Aladie.

Also, last week Sunday, three more villages benefitted from the monarch’s largesse. They were Fashola, Aba-Aladie and Sooku. While a transformer was commissioned at Sooku, a well-furnished maternity centre was opened for use of the villagers.

Yunusa, who spoke when the FCT All Progressive Congress (APC) senatorial candidate, Senator Sidi Ali, the party House of representatives candidate, Alhaji Zakari Angulu Dobi, and their supporters visited the monarch at his palace to seek for his blessings towards the general election.

According to the monarch, any child who is going out to look something good either for himself or for the entire society, must surely go to seek for his father’s blessing irrespective of any background he or she comes from.

“So I want to  appeal to all of you here to advised all your supporters to avoid any abusive or provocative comments that may ignite any violent reaction from opponent, as God gives power to who he wishes and take it anytime right from the day such person was born, “ he said.

  • Monarch alleges attack over Buhari’s title

One of the oldest traditional rulers in Ngwa, Abia State, His Majesty Eze Isaac Ikonne may sue the chairman of the state traditional rulers’ council, His Majesty Eze Eberechi Dick for alleged defamation of character.

The Ngwa king claimed that the monarch’s council chair maligned his character in a purported text message and radio announcement over the conferment of a chieftaincy title on the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Gen Muhammadu Buhari.

As part of his nationwide campaign tour, Gen Buhari, accompanied by Imo Senator Chris Ngige and other stalwarts of the APC, visited Ikonne on January 10 at his Aba palace where the monarch conferred the title of Ogbuagu 1 on the General.

Eze Dick has denied smearing Eze Ikonne’s character. He also told the reporter on the phone that the state traditional council was not against honouring Buhari with a title, only that Aba where the Ogbuagu 1 was conferred was not a recognised kingdom.

The chieftaincy title which was given to the APC presidential candidate by the monarch and other members of his cabinet, according to the Ngwa monarch, was bestowed on the APC presidential candidate as a sign of love and to strengthen ties between the two ethnic groups.

Eze Ikonne has come under heavy criticism from different quarters especially the opposition party over his action.

The Enyi 1 of Aba has threatened legal action against the chairman of the state traditional rulers’ council.

In a letter to Eze Eberechi Dick by counsel to Ikonne, K.C. Nwufo, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, copies of which were sent to the state governor Theodore Orji, the AIG Zone 9, Umuahia, Abia Commissioner of Police, the Area Commander, Aba Area Command of the Nigeria Police, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, the Peoples Democratic Party governorship candidate and others, the revered monarch alleged among many things that Eze Dick in an announcement on the state-owned radio station, purportedly signed by him, described him (Ikonne) as a non-native of Osusu Aba.

The traditional ruler said he has been on the throne of his community for over 40 years, adding that for Eze Dick to allege that he was not from Osusu village was defamatory.

According to him the Abia State traditional rulers’ council chairman would soon be summoned at the appropriate place to prove and justify his claims.

The letter titled, “Your defamatory text messages to various traditional rulers in Abia State against attending meetings summoned by HRM I.A Ikonne”, reads in part:

“That you sent text messages to some traditional rulers of Abia State origin directing them to desist from further attending meetings in the palace of HRM (Eze) I.A Ikonne because such meetings are allegedly political, otherwise they will face the ugly consequence of such attendance.

“That you have no legal and moral right to send text messages to traditional rulers not to attend meeting in our client’s palace on the allegation that such meetings are political.

“That no traditional ruler, including our client is a politician. HRM (Eze) I.A  Ikonne is not a card carrying member of any political party and as such, he does not belong to any political party.

“That as a traditional ruler, our client is a father of all persons in Nigeria and thus is duty bound to receive any person, including a politician who visits his palace to pay him a courtesy call. This does not make him a politician.

“That it is on record that you received politicians who paid you courtesy visits in your palace. This we believe did not make you a politician or your receiving them a political meeting, unless you say otherwise.

“It is this unfounded propaganda of yours that you have contrived and used to deceive and manipulate the Abia PDP governorship candidate, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu into believing that our client is against his candidacy. That you are not doing him any good by such wicked contrivance because you are depriving him of the votes of the natives of our client’s community who would love to meet him one-on-one when he visits our client’s palace.

“That our client has been on the throne as a traditional ruler of his community for about 43 years now and so it is absolutely false and petty for your Highness to allege that he is not from Osusu village. This is defamatory and which you will soon be summoned at the appropriate venue to prove.”

Justifying that the traditional title given to General Muhammadu Buhari doesn’t have any political undertone, Eze Ikonne in a telephone interview said he had in the past given chieftaincy titles to notable Nigerians such former president Olusegun Obasanjo, wife of the president, Dame Patience Jonathan, former governor of Abia State, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, former Anambra State governor, Dr. Chris Ngige, former senate president, Adolph Wabara, former deputy senate president Ibrahim Mantu among others and wondered why the one he gave to Gen. Buhari should be causing ripples in the state.

Reacting to the development, the All Progressives Congress (APC) party chairman in the state, Hon. Donatus Nwankpa described the purported suspension of Eze Ikonne by the Abia State traditional rulers’ council and null and void, adding that the monarch has the right to give traditional title to whomever he deemed fit for such an honour.

Nwankpa argued that the traditional rulers’ council doesn’t have the right to suspend Ikonne as he stressed that Enyi 1 of Aba didn’t commit any crime honouring a man who according to custom went to acclimatize with the traditional ruler that overseas where he had come to draw its peoples support.

While maintaining that APC would not want to drag itself into insulting the traditional rulers said “APC is a party that respects the traditional institution and traditional rulers, but we will not fold our arms to watch the image of the traditional institutions dragged into mud.”

When contacted on his phone, Eze Eberechi Dick said as the chairman of Abia State Traditional Council, that he was not aware of any announcement on Eze Ikonne’s suspension.

On the purported message sent to traditional rulers asking them not to attend any meeting in Ikonne’s palace, the chairman Abia State traditional rulers’ council replied, “he has the right to summon his cabinet members for a meeting but not to summon other traditional rulers elsewhere, he doesn’t have any locus.

  • Monarch, council chief yearn for community policing

Monarch, council chief yearn for community policing

The issue of community policing became the centre of discussion on Monday when the people of Alimosho, the most populated local government in Nigeria gathered for a stakeholders’ forum.

The 2015 Local Government Economic Empowerment and Development Strategy Stakeholders Forum was meant to discuss among other issues, budget for the year, security, forthcoming general elections, taxes and development of the communities.

The early arrival of the stakeholders including members of the Community Development Committee (CDC), marketers, traditional rulers, members of the youth council, council officials and party leaders paved way for smooth kick off of the event.

The arrival of the monarch, Oba of Sasha Oba Nasiru Babatunde Ogunrombi enlivened the atmosphere.

Amid political songs, banters and shout of party slogans, the newly installed Executive Secretary (ES), Jelili Sulaimon mounted the podium amidst cheers from the gathering.

.The forum, Sulaimon said, was in fulfillment of the promise by the council administration to carry along stakeholders before critical decisions are taken.

“This, you will all agree with me is the way forward in making our local government embrace international best practices in governance,” he said.

While thanking them for their presence, the council boss said the attendance attested to their unwavering commitment to the development of the council.

“As we all know, local government is the first level of government the citizens come in contact with within their locality; it is the closest to the people at the grassroots and as such it becomes imperative to involve the citizens and residents of the council and other relevant stakeholders in the conceptualisation of the budget and the economic policies as it affects the citizenry,” he said.

According to him, in the past, economic policies were made the exclusive privilege of the government functionaries, saying when there was disconnection between the people and the policies, programmes and projects of the government which were supposed to serve the people then it becomes a burden.

Government alone, Sulaimon said, cannot fashion out the needs of the community, hence the necessity for the meeting to receive input from all stakeholders so that at the end of the day “we shall have a budget that meets the yearnings and aspirations of the people.”

He implored stakeholders and residents within the local government to pay their taxes and levies for the government to have enough resources to cater for its programmes and projects.

Oba Ogunrombi hailed the Executive Secretary for starting on a good note by consulting with the people before implementation of his policies.

Sulaimon’s action, he said, was in line with the policy of Lagos State Governor, Mr Babatunde Fashola. This, the monarch said, will aid accountability in the running of the affairs of the council.

He enjoined the people to be law abiding always.

Alimosho, he said, is the heart of Lagos just as Lagos is the heart of Nigeria, hence wherever it takes to ensure peaceful co-existence in the area should be done.

The monarch called on the residents to support the new council boss.

The CDC chairman, Chief Shola Ogunyombo said the ES has done well within the short time he assumed office. He described as commendable the performance of council boss in the three weeks he has spent so far in office.

“We have told him our needs particularly the grading of roads and he has visited some of the roads on the list submitted to his office and promised to expedite action on them,” he said.

On the forthcoming election, he said community policing will go a long way to curb crimes within the vicinity.

He enjoined parents to monitor their wards.

“This is the time politicians may want to use them to achieve selfish desire; the youth should shun whoever asked them to commit crime during and after the elections,” he said.

Chief Ogunyombo urged politicians to play the game by the rules, saying winning an election should be through rigorous campaign and not by violence.

Other stakeholders reiterated the need for an effective community policing to ensure a violence-free society.

He spoke when the NDDC Managing Director, Bassey Dan-Abia, visited his palace at the weekend.

The monarch said the NDDC had raised Ugbonla’s status and made it stand out as far as basic infrastructure was concerned.

Ogunfeyimi said he was particularly impressed by the quality of the three-kilometre Ugbonla township road, which he said had become a model for other rural communities.

“We thank the NDDC for giving us the necessary amenities that are now attracting our people to come back home. We are particularly grateful for the internal roads and the solar-powered street lights,” the monarch said.

Dan-Abia told the monarch that he was on an inspection tour of the commission’s projects in Ilaje Local Government Area in compliance with a presidential directive.

  • Monarch counsels youths

The Olu of Itori in Ogun State, Oba Fatai Akamo, has advised youths to shun politicians who will use them as hoodlums during the next elections.

Oba Akamo observed the rate at which many youths die due to the task assigned to them during electoral processes. He lamented that it was high time youths stood on their feet to disregard such act.

Speaking on the contributions of traditional rulers to promote good governance, he said: “We ensure our domains are peaceful and calm during elections because constitutionally we have no role to play in politics. So, Nigerians should vote freely without fear.”
