    Competency test: Monarch hails Oshiomhole

The Otaru of Auchi, Aliru Momoh, has praised the Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, for cancelling the competency test proposed for public school teachers.

Speaking at the formal presentation of the winner of a Koranic recitation competition in Jigawa State, the monarch said the move would douse teachers’ tension and fears on what they erroneously thought was a ploy by the government to retrench them.

Momoh said: “I was happy to hear that the competency test has been cancelled. The teachers are now back. Those who were sacked have been asked to resume work.

“I thank you for this gesture and God bless you. So I must say that not only Edo State but Nigeria as a whole must be happy about this development.”

The monrach said the extension of other entitlements to the teachers would increase their productivity.

“I hope the governor’s gesture would be adequately rewarded by the teachers and their union.”

    Monarch praises VC

For maintaining a cordial relationship with the Umudike Uku autonomous community, inspiring and employing its youth, the Vice Chancellor of Michael Opara University of Agriculture Umudike (MOUAU), Prof Hilary Edeoga, has won the heart of the trandtional ruler, Eze Ben Ogichi Oriaku.

Describing Edeoga as God-sent, the monarch told The Nation that his good work has resonated beyond the institution to touch the host community.

“In most universities, we hear things like riots and demonstrations, but we have never heard such in MOUAU because of the managerial dexterity of Prof Edeoga,” he said.

The Eze added that the university has positively affected the psyche of the youths in the community “to the extent that all the youths are now interested in attending the university.”

The traditional ruler of the university host community added that the university has witnessed unprecedented growth under Edeoga, whose five-year tenure ends in 20 months’ time.

He praised the vice chancellor for ending the practice of ‘sorting’ – giving money for grades; and checked cultism.

“The issue of sorting in MOUAU has been put to a stop, as students are seen in the midnight studying hard to pass their examinations unlike before when students bank on giving money to lecturers to pass their examination.  We now have brilliant graduates from the university in our community.

“I took time out to go round the university and noticed 10 new hostels, many lecture halls, tarred roads, and shuttle vehicles for students at subsidised rates; Prof Edeoga should live long,” he said.

Unlike previous administrations, Eze Oriaku said the university had never considered members of the community for employment.

“But right now the situation is different as Prof Edeoga has remembered our people and that is the kind of thing that makes host communities happy,” he said.

The monarch, however, urged the Vice Chancellor to employ members of the community, who are qualified into senior positions in the university.

On his part, the President-General of Umudike Ukwu Improvement Union, Chief Philip Ukonu, urged youths from the community to study hard to sieze employment opportunities in the university when they come.

  • Pomp, ceremony as Ogbe-Ijoh buries monarch

Pomp, ceremony as Ogbe-Ijoh buries monarch

For one week, the chiefs and people of Ogbe-Ijoh Kingdom in Warri South-West Council Area of Delta State turned out in their best to bid their late king, Pere Amakosu, the Oduwor III, farewell. SHOLA O’NEIL and BOLAJI OGUNDELE chronicle the elaborate ceremonies that attended the monarch’s funeral

He was their chief; the first to be named when names are to be called among their kind. They revered him while he was still among them. He led them for over four decades, during which he became the longest reigning monarch in the state. It was therefore no wonder that his people spared no expenses when the time came to accord him their last respect.

They are the Ogbe-Ijoh people, one of the Ijaw clans in Warri South West Local Government Area of Delta State. For the seven days the burial rites lasted, they came from far and wide, left their businesses and gave all to bid the Pere Amakosu of Ogbe-Ijaw/Warri Kingdom, His Royal Majesty, King Israel Sele Sokoh Gbenebode, Oduwor III, a final goodbye.

To honour the passage of the late king, the council of chiefs and people of Ogbe-Ijoh, lined out a number of activities, spanning a whole week, and involving participants from home and abroad. Having led the people for almost forty years -1974 to 2012- and participated in the larger political affairs of his state, right from the defunct Midwest (Bendel) state to the current Delta State, the Pere was not the sort of traditional ruler who would be allowed to just go home without a bang that would reverberate throughout the Niger Delta.

The events of his final journey to join his ancestors were led by the Regent of Ogbe-Ijoh Kingdom, Chief (Dr) Samson Mamamu; they were carefully planned and executed with the sort of pageantry befitting a true royalty that he was.

The ceremony was flagged off on May 24 with the traditional wake-keeping (Duwei Deinkoru). The rarely seen Ogbolomo masquerades, which only perform in honour of revered personalities, as monarch and those who reached a very ripe age as Pere Amakosu did, came out. They defied the sun and scourging heat as they performed for several hours. When night fell, the elders and spiritual leaders of the kingdom took over to perform Igodo (traditional cleansing) ceremony.

As a predominantly Christian clan, an interdenominational church service was held in the town on Sunday, 25th May; it combined all but a few churches Ogbe-Ijoh. The service was followed on the third day by colourful dance troupes from the various quarters of the kingdom. Dancers from Egrangbene, Orugbene, Ijansa, Kenlogbene and Oyangbene took turns to perform all day long into the night. Their songs and dances were not mournful, rather, it was salutary to legacies and achievements of a monarch, during whose time on the throne Ogbe-Ijoh was made the headquarters of oil-rich Warri SouthWest local council.

On the fourth day, the ceremony crossed the creeks into Warri metropolis for a couple of events. First, there was the Pere Ogele; a long procession by sons and daughters of the kingdom from the Catholic Church down to the Ogbe-Ijoh Market, through the NPA area. The procession was capped with a boat regatta in Warri.

The rest part of the day was occupied by some more Ogbe-Ijoh sub-communities, performing dances; Wilikigbene, Bomobolou, Arotenghan, Odidi and some Warri town corner communities.

Wednesday last week saw the visit of traditional rulers from other towns and communities paying their last respect to the memory of their departed royal colleague, who was one of the longest serving monarchs in the state. More than 25 royal fathers from different parts of the state, made their way to Ogbe-Ijoh to bid a colleague farewell. The train include His Royal Majesty, Pere Charles Ayemi Botu (JP) OFR, paramount ruler of Seimbiri Kingdom; the Owhorode of Olomu Kingdom, HRM Ovie Ogoni-Oghoro1, JP; Agadagba of Egbema, His Royal Majesty Benipere III; HRM  Joseph Timiyan (JP), Pere of Ogulagha Kingdom and HRM S.O Akemetubo (JP) The Ebenanaowei of Obotebe Kingdom. Others were E.B.O Delekpe, Owhorue (JP) Ovie of Udu Kingdom; Pere of Akugbene Mein V11 Pere Kalanama V111 (JP).

Speaking on behalf of the traditional rulers, the Owhorode of Olomu Kongdom, HRM, Ovie Ogoni-Oghoro 1, (JP) poured encomium on the late king, describing him as a father indeed. He said the late Pere of Ogbe-Ijoh was a peaceful and hardworking traditional ruler who believed in team work and spirit of unity among his subjects and neigbhouring kingdoms in the state.

“We have lost a colleague who was like our father. He was a peaceful and industrious ruler who was the oldest traditional ruler in the state on the throne for 40 years. He held various offices in the Delta state traditional rulers council before his demise. We want to tell you that we loved him so much. We wish him peaceful rest at the bosom of the Lord”, the royal father declared.

On Thursday last week, in-laws, family members and children led by the deputy governor of the state, Professor Amos Utuama, whose daughter is married to an Ogbe-Ijoh son. The deputy governor was in the kingdom in dual capacity; as an in-law and as a representative of the state government.

The rites climaxed last Friday with HRH Mamamu leading the kingdom to receive an array of other dignitaries, comprising of chiefs, political office holders and some ex-freedom fighters. The last set of callers included Senator representing Delta North Senatorial District, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa; the state’s Commissioner for Environment and a son of Ogbe-Ijoh, Frank Omare as well as representatives of Ijaw national leader, Chief Edwin Clark. Intels Nigeria, a corporate organisation operating within the kingdom also sent representatives. The climax of the last day of the event was the arrival of ex-agitators, led by Chief Government Ekpemupolo (Tompolo).

The Fiye-Owei (spokesman) of Ogbe-Ijoh Kingdom, Chief Favour Izoukumor, attributed the success of the programme to God’s grace and the support of Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, the traditional rulers, Chief Ekemupolo and other personalities who participated in one way or the other.

On the next step for Ogbe-Ijoh kingdom, the spokesman said the selection of a new Pere would have to be initiated within the shortest possible time, after which installation ceremony would be performed, for a new leader of the people to be crowned. All these would only happen after the kingdom has rested from the stress of burying its last king.

  • Monarch donates books to schools

    Monarch donates books to schools

The traditional ruler of Ifitedunu in Dunukofia Local Government Area of Anambra State, Eze Chukwuemeka Iluno has distributed a 40-ft container load of books to 18 primary schools and six secondary schools in the council area.

The books are in different subject areas including mathematics, history, reference and science books were obtained from a foreign publishing giant, ‘Book for Africa’ in Atlanta, United States of America.

Iluno explained that the books were shipped from US to Nigeria at the cost of over N3 million. Such gesture, he argued, is the one of the ways to curb crime in the society.

Eze Ilouno said his motivation is hinged on the reality that most problems faced in the area can only be traced to ignorance, adding “the more educated one is, the more knowledgeable he becomes and the more one can cope with life challenges.”

“We are trying to re-educate our people to realise the importance of education. I also realise that most young men in Igbo land don’t want to enroll in school anymore because they want quick money.

“I want to make Ifitedunu better than I met it by making it the best community in Anambra State. I am right now building a computer laboratory at Nneamaka Secondary School and library for another school in the town to promote reading culture. I am also building a school hostel for another school here. The design is what you can find in any modest structure,” he said

He expressed worry over poor reading culture in Nigeria, stressing that the only solution is to make education affordable to Nigerians.

The books were commissioned by the Anambra State Governor, Dr. Willie Obiano who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) Mr. Oseloka Obaze. Others in Obaze’s company were the Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Mr. Tony Onyima and his wife, the council chairman, Sir Chukwudi Okeke, among others.

Responding, Governor Obiano praised the monarch and reinstated his administration’s commitment to ridding the state of criminals, noting that the determination is to prepare ground for foreign investors.

On his part, the Chairman, Dunukofia Local Government Area, Sir Chukwudi Okeke, said that the council would ensure the selected schools get the books and use them. He lauded the monarch’s gesture as a way of encouraging children and parents.

The President-General of Ifitedunu Town Union, Prince Nezieanya Obinabo said:”What Igwe has done is a manifestation of his interest in education which is in tandem with what the state government has been doing. Governor Obi invested much in education and that investment is continuing with Gov. Obiano’s administration, which is today spreading across the state”.

Two beneficiary schools Solid Case Montessori International School, Umuanugo Ifitedunu, and Arch Angel Secondary School, Ifitedunu, led by their Proprietress and Manager Mrs Uju Louis and Rev. Fr. Christopher Ezeibe thanked the monarch.

  • Ibadan’s toast to its monarch on his centenary birthday

Ibadan’s toast to its monarch on his centenary birthday

Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, was the centre of attention for the centenary birthday celebration of the city’s monarch, Oba Samuel Odulana Odugade 1. BISI OLA-DELE and TAYO JOHNSON write on the exciting week-long revelry.

Not many people hope to or could live up to 100 years but when anyone attains the centenary age – and still counting – then it calls for celebration. That was exactly what the people of Ibadan did about a fortnight ago when they staged a huge party to celebrate the 100th birthday of their monarch, Oba Samuel Odulana, Odugade I.

It was a unique occasion for the entire indigenes of the ancient city, who proudly celebrated their monarch as they practically sang and drummed it into the ears of those who cared to listen for the whole week that the event lasted, that Oba Odulana was a hundred years old.

Old age has never really been a problem as far as the throne of Olubadan of Ibadan land is concerned as most of the past Olubadans actually ascended the throne in their very old age, but few, if any, before Oba Odulana actually lived to celebrate 100 years on the throne. And that added to the uniqueness of the occasion.

From billboards announcing the birthday, to radio jingles and television commercials eulogising the monarch and the city, no resident could beat the impact of the media campaign heralding the birthday celebration.

While members of the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII), which planned and organised the ceremony were head-over-heels reaching out to interest groups, organisations, government and individuals to make the ceremony a huge success, politicians of Ibadan origin scrambled for newspaper pages, billboards and airtime on radio and television to congratulate the monarch. Among them were Governor Abiola Ajimobi, of the All Progressives Congress (APC), former governor Rashidi Ladoja of Accord Party and Mr. Oluseyi Makinde of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).  Many other politicians donated towards the project.

By Sunday, April 14, the city was already agog for the ceremony. The monarch turned 100 years on Monday, April, 15. The week-long ceremony kicked off that Monday with a thanksgiving church service.

To lead other dignitaries in joining the Olubadan at the church thanksgiving service at the St Peter’s Cathedral, Aremo and cut the birthday cake that Monday was President Goodluck Jonathan. The city was already prepared as Mr President had confirmed his attendance.

But it was not to be as a suicide bomber ripped through the heart of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on the fateful day, killing over 100 people, though government officials put the figure at 75.

The incident forced Jonathan to stay back in Abuja to visit the scene and condole with victims of the blast and their families.

As the blast inflicted pains on victims and many Nigerians, so did Jonathan’s absence in Ibadan that day inflict pain on some indigenes who had looked forward to his attendance to add colour and glamour to the ceremony.

But, the president sent a powerful delegation of six ministers to represent him and convey his goodwill message to the birthday boy, who personally attended the church service. They are Labaran Maku (Information), Jumoke Akinjide (Minister of State for FCT), Akinwumi Adesina (Agriculture),  Omobola Johnson (Communication and Technology), Jelili Adesiyan (Police Affairs) and Musiliu Obanikoro (Minister of State for Defence)

As early as 7:30 am, all roads leading to the famous church, St Peter’s Cathedral, Aremo, in the heart of the city, had been blocked by security agents.

Security presence around the church itself was heavy. A combination of soldiers, policemen, operatives from the Department of Security Service (DSS), men of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, as well as men of the Federal Road Safety Corps, joined others to provide security for the visiting president.

However, the church glittered continuously with bright decoration, glamorous guests and many indigenes wearing uniform (aso-ebi) in honour of the birthday boy. Joy, songs of praise, dance and celebration pervaded the air as Ibadan indigenes revelled in pride for the unique occasion.

The church witnessed preponderance of a mixture of politicians, business men, professionals, Ibadan chiefs, friends, family and well-wishers.

Delivering the goodwill message in the church on Monday, on behalf of President Jonathan, Maku disclosed that the strong team representing the Fexeral Government showed the historic significance of the day.

He recalled that the President had since last year, when Oba Odugade clocked 99, planned to attend the centenary celebration with a prayer that God should spare the life of the monarch to see his 100th birthday and was happy and eager to fulfill his promise but for the Abuja bombing.

Asking for the observation of minute silence in honour of those who lost their lives in the bomb blast, he described those behind the dastardly act as forces of darkness and enemies of the country.

Jonathan lauded the peaceful coexistence among Yoruba Muslims, Christians and traditional worshippers, a very good example which he enjoined other ethnic groups follow. Regardless of religion or culture, President Jonathan stressed that Nigerians should see one another as fellow human beings and country men who should be shown love.

He pointed out the religious tolerance among Yoruba, stressing that if people in the Southwest could live with one another despite the population of both Muslims and Christians, then there should be no reason for political violence in any part of the country.

His words: “Yoruba land is a symbol of peace where Muslims, Christians and traditional worshippers embrace one another. If there is no religious violence in Yoruba land, there is no reason for religious violence anywhere in the country”, he said.

Playing glowing tributes to Oba Odugade, he described him as king among the kings and promoter of peace, not only among his people, but across the country by his doggedness, forthrightness and his knack for truth at all times.

In his sermon, Most Rev. Segun Okubadejo described the celebrant as an embodiment of virtues who has served mankind meritoriously.

He said attaining centenary in one’s lifetime is an uncommon phenomenon.

“This is unique because it is 100th birthday of royalty. We should offer sacrifice of jubilation and songs of praise to God for what He has done in the life of our king. Looking at the hopelessness, restlessness, insecurity in the world; looking at a world where life expectancy is now 49, it is worthy of praise for somebody to attain 100 years,” he said.

Turning to the celebrant, the cleric said: “You are a unique and distinguished personality. You are the first Olubadan to clock 100 years on the throne and the first Olubadan to serve his subjects meritoriously.”

Making reference to the book of Isaiah 3:10, he said the word ‘righteousness’ in the text does not connote perfection but connotes someone who has done justice to all. “Your impeccable record and invaluable contributions to social and other facets of life would remain indelible. As you live on, you must praise God because he has been so faithful to you. Praise him because his undying love is still available to you till you breathe your last”, he said.

After the church service, Ibadan chiefs: Mogajis and Baales together with the chairmen of the 11 local governments in Ibadan land, paid homage to the Olubadan in his palace at Monatan. It was a celebration of culture as the chiefs appeared in gorgeous Yoruba attires with beads around their necks. They prayed for longer life for the monarch as well as more peaceful reign.

On Tuesday, the president put the horror and pain of the Abuja bomb blast aside and  paid a make-up visit to the celebrant. On his entourage were Senate President, David Mark; Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives, Hon. Emeka Ihedioha and other top Federal Government officials.

They visited the monarch at his Monatan, Ibadan residence to personally join him in the centenary celebration.

The visit, which lasted 25 minutes, left the airport – Iwo Road – Monatan axis of the city reeling under traffic snarls for the period the president’s visit lasted.

Also, on Jonathan’s entourage were the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Adamu Muazu and the Deputy Senate Whip, Hosea Agboola. They were received at the airport by the state Governor Abiola Ajimobi while the Minister of State for FCT Jumoke Akinjide, Ajimobi’s predecessor, Otunba Adebayo Alao-Akala and former Senate leader, Teslim Folarin, and some other PDP leaders joined them.

President Jonathan apologised for his inability to come on Monday as a result of the Nyanya bomb blast.

Though, he was represented by the Minister of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku, he said he wished to attend personally but for the unfortunate incident.

While praying for more prosperous years ahead, he  said his representative at the thanksgiving service on Monday had delivered his birthday message.

He described the Olubadan as a very unique monarch, being one of the very few around who were born when the Northern and Southern protectorates were amalgamated.

According to him, it is the clean mind, good character, clear conscience and good record of service, which the monarch has that made him enjoy longevity.

Jonathan and his entourage sang for the celebrant and thereafter cut the birthday cake.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Otun Olubadan, Omowale Kuye, who spoke on behalf of  Olubadan praised  the President for the visit, saying being the first person to occupy the presidential seat from the minority zone of the country, he had done the right thing by the approval he gave for the ongoing National Conference which he said, “is what the country needs currently.”

On Thursday, academics, medical experts, clerics and traditionalists gathered at the Civic Centre to deliberate on the theme of longevity which the Olubadan enjoys. It was another programme on the list of the centenary celebration.

Emeritus professor, Oladipo Akinkugbe, moderated the programme. After a long deliberation at the symposium with the theme: “Ageing and Longevity”, it was agreed among experts that consumption of large quantity of water, right amount of fruit, vegetables and regular exercise would keep sickness at bay. They also advocated forgiveness, that is, habouring no hatred or bitterness in one’s heart against fellow humans, as demonstrated by the celebrant.

At the symposium were Prof. Lekan Oyedeji, Mr Tunde Ajobo, Bishop Francis Wale Oke, Prof. Oloyede Abdulrahman and a traditionalist, Chief Ifasola Ifamapawa.

Others included the CCII National President, Chief Bayo Oyero, Chief Are Oyebola, Oloye Lekan Alabi and Chief Waheed Ekun.

Conferment of chieftaincy titles on some distinguished individuals on Saturday wrapped up the celebration. Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka; Senate President, David Mark and a historian, Prof. Toyin Falola, were to be conferred with chieftaincy titles at the palace. But only Falola, a specialist in American history, showed up.

Falola was conferred with the title of ‘Bobapitan’ of Ibadan land by the Olubadan-in-Council.

The event started around 11:30 am with Falola, his wife, Bisi decked in a wine and chocolate colour Aso-oke. They were joined by friends and associates in the academic world from home and abroad.

Other indigenes, decked in a different uniform (aso-ebi) were on hand to add to the colour of the occasion. So were itinerary drummers, who drummed to the ecstasy of guests.

The Personal Assistant to Olubadan, Chief Isiaka Akinpelu, kicked off the event by inviting all the members of Olubadan-in-Council and later announced Falola’s name for the conferment.

The man prostrated for the Olubadan three times as a mark of respect and as custom demands.

His citation was read before a green (Akoko) leaf was placed under his cap to confirm him as a chief in Ibadan land. His wife became the ‘Yeye Bobapitan’ of Ibadan land.

Dignitaries at the ceremony were a former Head of Service of the Federation, Prof Oladapo Afolabi; Olugbo of Ugboland, Obateru Akinruntan; Orangun of Oke-Ila, Oba Adedokun Abolarin;  former Vice-Chancellor, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Prof Akinola Murtala Salau; Amb. Olusola Saanu and Balogun Olubadan, High Chief Sulaimon Omiyale.

Others include, President of the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII), Chief Bayo Oyero;  Chairman of Council, Lead City University, Prof. Jide Owoeye; Ekerin Olubadan, High Chief Eddy Oyewole, scion of Olubadan, Prof Femi Lana and another son of the Olubadan, Prince Gbade Lana, the  Oyo State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, among others.

In his speech, Prof. Falola said that he accepted the honour because Oba Odulana is not given to frivolous conferment of titles on undeserving individuals.

He said the honour was based on the monarch’s objective assessment of his intellectual acumen, adding that he would forever be grateful to the monarch.

“I am very proud of the Olubadan of Ibadan land, I would have collected several chieftaincy titles, but I have no choice than to accept this honour, coming from the highly revered royal father, the Olubadan. I know that he doesn’t just dole out chieftaincy titles anyhow. He is a man of no mean achievement and he is highly principled,” he said.

Reacting on behalf of the Olubadan, on why Senate President, David Mark and Prof Wole Soyinka were absent, Chief Isiaka Akinpelu, said that Mark had already written to the palace to inform them about his unavailability for the chieftaincy title conferment due to official engagements.

He said: “Mark promised to give us a new date to receive the title. Also for Prof. Soyinka, he is still mourning the death of his daughter and he called us yesterday evening that he would choose a new date when he will come for the title.”

For Oba Odugade 1 and the entire Ibadan indigenes, the centenary was a ceremony that will find a central place in the history of Ibadan land.

Youths urge Obiano to remove monarch

One hundred and fifty youths from Oko in Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State, yesterday stormed the Government House in Awka, demanding the removal of their ruler, Prof. Laz Ekwueme.

The youths accused the monarch of undermining the peace in the community.

The protest followed the crisis in the community, which led to the shooting of a masquerader by soldiers allegedly invited by Igwe Ekwueme at the Afia Olu festival.

Led by their leader, Evangelist Hilary Ezeokafor, the youths sang and waved placards, reading: “Governor Obiano, please restore peace in Oko”, “Igwe Ekwueme has defiled our culture”, “Our Igwe ordered the shooting of youths”, among others.

They regretted that their once peaceful community had become crisis-prone because of the alleged activities of the ruler and the President General of Oko Progressive Union (OPU), Mr. Cyprian Nwamuo.

Ezeokafor said: “Our ruler and Nwamuo are causing trouble in our area. He is fighting the youth, banishing people for no reason, and using the army to terrorise the community. He is also fighting the Rector of Oko Federal Polytechnic, Professor Godwin Onu.”

“We believe the only thing that can bring peace to Oko is for the government to dethrone him.”

“The problem started when he called us to join him in fighting the rector. We said no, because the rector is performing,” Ezeokafor said.

Senior Special Assistant to the Governor James Eze told them that the government would look into what the crisis in Oko.

Eze praised them for their peaceful conduct.

Describing Obiano as a listening governor, Eze said the state government would address the problem.

Igwe Ekwueme, who appeared on Tuesday for the first time since last Saturday’s crisis, addressed his chiefs on Tuesday, saying that his life was in danger.

Following the crisis, security men have taken over the Oko. But normal activities have resumed.

  • Ogun court strikes out suit against monarch

An Ogun State  High Court sitting in Otta has struck out a suit against the Baale  of Ado Igoke-Igbesa, Alhaji Saidi Ifalodun Aina Ibila by Kehinde Buhari Inakoju, and two others for lack of juridiction.

The judge, Justice O.S. Olusanya said the suit by the claimants was premature and does not give rise to a cognisable course of action.

“From the above reasons, I hold that the action of the claimants is accordingly premature, and does not give rise to a cognisable cause of action. I hold that the court lacks the jurisdiction to hear and determine the case. The suit is hereby struck out,” he said.

Other claimants in the suit are: Messrs Akeem Inakoju and Musiliu Eweje.

The defendants are: Alhaji Saheed F. Odusanya; Oba Samuel Olusola Banusao, the Oloja Ekun of Igbesa land; and the Attorney-General of Ogun State. Others are: Ogun State Commissioner for Local Government and Cheiftancy Affairs and the Chiarman, Ado-Odo Local Government, Ogun State.

The claimants are praying the court for:

    (i) A declaration that the first defendant is not a bonafide  member of the Inakoju, Eweje, Apogba and Ojuri Rulling House.

(ii) The fisrt defendant is not qualifies or competent to be nominated or appointed to occupy the stool of Idi-Okeland of Ogun State.

(iii) A declaration that the first defendant should not portray himself as the Oba-in-waiting to the throne of or the stoool of Oke in Ogun State.

(iv) An order of perpetual injuction restraining the first defendant from parading himself or as performing the function of Oba of Idi-Oke in Igbesa Ogun State.

In a sharp contrast, however, the defendants prayed the court for a notice of a preliminary objection on the grounds that:

    (i) The third and fifth defendants are of necessary parties to this action and as such their names should be struck out accordingly.

(ii) The court lacks juridiction to entertain their suit and as such,  it should be dismissed.

Justice Olusanya in his judgement dated July 23 2009, said before the claimants can take their grieviances to the court, three steps must be complied with. The steps, he said, include that:

    (i) The prescribed authorithy must have made a determination;

(ii) The the aggrieved party make a representation to the Commissioner for Chieftancy Affairs within 21 days of the giving of the decision,  and

(iii) The Commissioner for Chieftancy Affairs should detemine after due inquiry.

Justice Olusanya said the claimants failed to meet the aforementiond steps.

“The claimants in this case have not complied with any of the conditions precedents or precondition enabling them to bring the action free before court,” Justice Olusanya added.

The Bale of Ago Idoke-Igbesa, Saidi Ifalodun Ibile said since the validation of his Baaleship  by the court in July last year still subsists,  he, therefore, still remains the authentic Baale of the community.

Baale Ibile’s action, he explained, was based on certain speculation by some interest in the community opposed to his leadership.

He said about two weeks ago, certain elements in the community peddled rumours that he (Ibile) is no longer the bonafide head of Ago-Idoke-Igbesa comunities, warning the public not to transact any business whatsoever with him including the sale of land.

    Monarch sues for peace

The Ona of Abaji and Chairman of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council of Chiefs, Alhaji Adamu Baba Yunusa, has advised the newly installed traditional ruler of Rimba community in the council, Alhaji Abubakar Jiya, to ensure that peace reigns among farmers and Fulani herdsmen in the area.

Yunusa, who gave the advice while turbaning Abubakar Jiya at his palace as the new Etsu of Rimba community, said he would not hesitate to summon the traditional ruler to his palace any time there is clash or misunderstanding between farmers and Fulani herdsmen at the community.

He advised the monarch to ensure that his subjects, especially youths, acquire both western and Islamic education so that they would compete with others in the society, adding that it is necessary for the monarch to abide by any rules and regulations that guide the traditional institution of the palace and that of the government.

He also advised the traditional ruler to intensify efforts in ensuring that he provides job opportunities for youths of the community and hands/skills acquisition as well as trading in order to divert their attention from social vices that may dent the image of the community.

The monarch, however, urged the traditional ruler to always ensure he operates an open door policy so that his people would have a free mind to present any useful advice that will always enhance peace, progress and development of the community.

“I want to inform you that this palace will not take no notice of any person conferred with any chieftaincy title that slaps or assaults his people even his wife. You should never molestanybody. Any time we receive report that you molested or slapped any of your subjects, we will not hesitate to remove your turban,” he warned.

Also speaking, the Secretary of Local Education Authority (LEA) of the council, Alhaji Hassan Suleiman who attended the turbaning ceremony, commended the kingmakers of the community for unanimously selecting one of their sons as their village head.

He described the newly installed Etsu Rimba as a humble and hard working person that has worked under him for over 10 years. He expressed his optimism that the new monarch will, no doubt, withstand the challenges of leadership to achieve peace in the community.

    Abia monarch celebrates anniversary

The traditional ruler of Aba in Aba North Local Government Area of Abia State, His Royal Majesty (HRM) Eze Isaac Ikonne the Enyi 1 of Aba has marked both his 85th birthday and 41st anniversary celebration on the throne penultimate Friday. Though the celebrations were supposed to be joyous, an unsavoury incident would have made them events to be regretted.

At the event, the Deputy Governor Chief Emeka Ananaba was already seated at the Boys’ Trade Centre (BTC) Aba, venue of the event. In terms of protocol, no other individual would come into the arena as it was expected that everybody would have been seated before the governor or his deputy comes into the event venue.

The Deputy Governor was already seated and the ceremony was in progress when some siring-blaring vehicles drove into the venue of the event. It was Chief Reagan John Ufomba, the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in the 2011 general elections.

Regarded as an affront to the personality of the Deputy Governor, his security details moved to stop the vehicles from driving into the venue.

To avoid any fracas, the Deputy Governor called back his men and stopped them from confronting the convoy of Ufomba from driving into the school premises. However, they succeeded in stopping the siring from blaring and disrupting the proceeding. While this was going on, Ufomba’s supporters were ready to confront the security details of the Deputy Governor, when Ufomba called them to order.

But for the mature manner the two men handled the situation, there would have been bloodshed.

The incident forced the two Master of ceremonies Linda Osuoha and Godspower Nwagbara to insist that the programme is not a political rally or ground for political campaign, even as they insisted that there should be no party slogans, as the celebrator is a man of peace who would not want crisis to erupt at his ceremony.

It was after the announcement that the political maturity was displayed, as the APGA governorship hopeful in the state immediately alighted from his car, directed his people to stop all the vehicles as the Deputy Governor who was representing the governor, Chief Theodore Orji and his wife, Mrs. Nene Ananaba who represented the President’s wife, Dame Patience Jonathan and the governor’s wife, Lady Mercy Orji were already seated.

Ufomba quickly walked towards the celebrator, Eze Ikonne greeted him and apologised for coming late and had no intention of disrupting the ceremony. He also walked to the Deputy Governor and his wife and apologised, saying that he was sorry for what happened since he never knew that they were already seated, which the Deputy Governor accepted. They immediately embraced themselves.

The action of the two politicians at the venue of the celebration took the supporters of Ufomba unawares as they were surprised at the behaviour of their principal. Some of them were already angling for a fight with the security details of the state Deputy Governor.

The ceremony started with the celebrator’s welcome address which was read by one of his sons. He thanked Governor Theodore Orji and his wife for their outstanding achievements in repositioning the state for accelerated growth and development in the state.

Eze Ikonne said: “It is worth mentioning that your efforts at promoting good governance, protection of lives and properties, economic growth and infrastructural development in the state are yielding the desired results. Today, Abia State is a haven for peace, a vital ingredient for sustainable development.”

He used the forum to plead with the governor to heed to the voice of the people of the state, especially the Abia Central Senatorial zone by vying for a seat at the Senate, saying that the voice of the people is the voice of God.

“You have done well and the people cannot afford to lose your kind of political potential in the political arena for now,” he said.

The monarch later conferred on the wife of the President, Dame Jonathan a chieftaincy title of Ada Ugo 1 (priceless daughter) of Eziama, Aba and the title was received on behalf of the President’s wife by the wife of the state Deputy Governor, Mrs. Ananaba.

Eze Ikonne further said she was chosen for the honour because of her outstanding qualities and her drive for human development which he said has impacted positively on the women and children of the country.

Speaking after the investiture, Dame Jonathan thanked the royal father for the honour bestowed on her and promised to keep working and supporting her husband to ensure a peaceful country where the citizens will have the freedom to express themselves without any fear.

In his speech, the governor, who was represented by his deputy, congratulated the celebrator on his double anniversary. He prayed that God should grant him more rewarding years and good health to continue to serve his people.

The next chieftaincy title of Agbawo dike izu (decisions cannot be taken behind a strong man) was conferred on Chief Ufomba, who quickly after the conferment went to greet the Deputy Governor, who embraced him and congratulated him on his new title.

At the end of the ceremony, the Deputy Governor walked to the canopy where Ufomba sat with his wife, friends and supporters to greet him before leaving for Umuahia.

People praised their show of maturity, saying it was an exemplary display of politics without bitterness.
