  • Minimum Wage: Lawyer threatens massive protest

An Akure lawyer, Morakinyo Ogele has given a seven-day ultimatum to Governors across the federation, who are not ready to pay the N30,000 minimum wage to workers to resign or face mass protest of workers.

The rights activist threatened to lead a massive protest against what he called oppression of  poor masses, alleging that office of the governor’s first ladies was a waste of funds.

According to him, governors spend one-third of the state allocation which was supposed to take care of urgent need of the people on the office of the first lady.

In a statement in Akure, Ogele insisted that the state governors have the capacity to pay the said N30,000.

Based on this, Ogele however called for the immediate scrapping  of  office of the first ladies ,saying the office was unconstitutional.

The statement said” There is no section in 1999 constitution recognising the office of first lady, governors should engage their wives at government house attending to domestic demands of their husbands.

“This office is draining the state treasuries, some of the first ladies are operating parallel offices with the governors having their own pool of vehicles, and personal assistants”.

Ogele also advised the state governors to reduce the number of their aides and cutting other forms of wastages to reduce the cost of infrastructure.

He advised governors to reorder their priorities in reducing wastage and restrain themselves from spending  what is not beneficial to their citizenry.

  • Ekiti 2018: Lawyer accuses PDP of vote buying in Ikere-Ekiti

Human rights lawyer, Mr. Morakinyo Ogele, has accused the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) of engaging in vote buying in Ikere-Ekiti, the hometown of its candidate, Prof. Kolapo Olusola.

He was reacting to Olusola’s allegation that the All Progressives Congress (APC) won Saturday’s election largely to alleged purchase of votes.

Olusola and his party, PDP, have signified intent to challenge the victory of the governor-elect, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, before the Election Petition Tribunal.

Ogele, a native of Ikere like Olusola, alleged that PDP and its agents induced voters at his Okesegun Polling Unit in Ogbonjana Ward.

The National Coordinator of Ekiti Redemption Group (ERG) also warned Olusola not to use state funds to sponsor his proposed court case against the poll result.

According to him, he has been compiling evidence of alleged PDP vote buying to be forwarded to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for investigation.

Ogele said: “I am a voter and I voted for the candidate of my choice in our unit, Okesegun Unit in Ogbonjana Ward, Ikere-Ekiti where PDP asked voters to fill forms and the voters who voted for them were given tallies.

“After being giving tallies to voters who voted for PDP, they were asked to go to a location nearby where they were given money.

“In the same ward, we prevented some of the PDP thugs from hijacking our ballot box. The PDP should come out and explain where they got the huge amount of money they shared on election day.

“PDP chairman and any other person in the party lack the moral justification that other parties shared money at the election.

“PDP lost because of the character that is ruling Ekiti while Dr. Kayode Fayemi won on his goodwill.

“PDP in Ekiti State is an agent of poverty, circulating poverty in Ekiti State. Ekiti people are fed up with looting, impunity, deceit being perpetrated by the Fayose administration.”

  • Teargassing: Fayose’s easing tension with comedy – Lawyer

Human rights lawyer, Morakinyo Ogele, has said Governor Ayo Fayose was treating the people of Ekiti State to a “huge dose of comedy” over the alleged teargassing incident on Wednesday.

Ogele said the entire script was developed, produced written and acted by Fayose to blackmail the Federal Government, the Nigeria Police and the Inspector General of Police.

The National Coordinator of Ekiti Redemption Group who spoke in a telephone chat with our reporter on Wednesday described Fayose as a master in playacting and simulation to deceive members of the public.

He said Fayose deliberately arranged the “comedy show” to be broadcast live on two prominent television stations wondering why the governor emerged from the hospital to address the crowd when the live broadcast was on.

Ogele urged Ekiti people to expect more drama from the governor before and after election.

He said: “What happened yesterday was a comedy produced by Fayose Theatre Group. I think there is tension in respect of the election to be held on 14th July.

“He just produced this comedy to water down the tension in Ekiti State so that the people could laugh. At this moment, people have forgotten about the election in order to watch him on stage.

“In 2006, he (Fayose) drove to the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos, shot his vehicle and ran to the Press Centre in Lagos that he was being pursued by hired assassins.

“We thank God that we did not pay a kobo to watch this drama, we expect him to produce more play before the forthcoming election.

“We are expecting him on 14th of July to produce a play so that people will go to polling centres well entertained ahead of the time they will exercise their franchise.”

•Less than 30% work done, activist claims

Hearing of the fraud charges levelled against former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) continued yesterday at the Federal High Court, sitting in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital.

EFCC insisted that Fayose diverted the money meant for a poultry project during his tenure.

Fayose was in the dock for several hours as activist-lawyer Morakinyo Ogele gave evidence against him before the court, which was presided over by Justice Adamu Hobon.

Ogele said the project believed to have cost about N1 billion, was abandoned, adding that not even 30 per cent of the work was executed.

Fayose was impeached on October 16, 2006, by the Ekiti House of Assembly after a report by the EFCC was adopted by the lawmakers, who found him “guilty of criminal diversion of funds meant for the project”.

Ogele, who wrote a petition dated December 13, 2004, to the EFCC in his capacity as the coordinator of the Ekiti Justice and Equity Movement (EJEM) on the alleged poultry scam, said N340 million was paid to the contractor by the government at the time of his petition, with no evidence that tax was deducted from the sum.

Fayose sat quietly in the dock as Ogele and his (Fayose’s) counsel, Ahmed Raji (SAN), engaged each other in a game of wits.

When Justice Hobon observed that the former governor was sweating, he told his police orderly to move the fan close to the dock.

The court clerk sent some of Fayose’s supporters out of the courtroom for making noise during the proceedings.

Ogele was led in evidence by EFCC counsel Adebisi Adeniyi before he was cross-examined by Raji.

Responding to questions from Raji, Ogele said he had nothing personal against Fayose, but wrote the petition because he was a stakeholder in Ekiti State.

He said he was invited by EFCC and wrote a statement, adding that he was interrogated by a team led by Mr. Abubakar Madaki.

Picking holes in the way the poultry contract was handled, Ogele said apart from the fact that no tax was deducted from the N340 million paid to Biological Concepts Nig. Ltd., the contractor, the project was not listed in the 2004 Appropriation Act.

When given a copy of ‘Exhibit A’, which was a copy of the Performance Bond dated September 24, 2004, Ogele said the document was not produced at the time he wrote the petition.

He objected to Raji’s claim that he (Ogele) was misled in writing the petition, adding that he was not prompted by anyone to write it.

Ogele said the poultry project site in his Ikere-Ekiti hometown was abandoned and was revived by the Benin-Owena River basin Development Authority based in the town.

When Raji asked why Ogele failed to praise Fayose for executing a “laudable project capable of employing many people”, the witness said: “I would have commended him (Fayose) if he had executed the project to benefit the people, but I cannot keep quiet in a situation where a contractor collected the project money and bolted. Performance Bond in Nigeria is a mere paper show. I rely on the content of my petition and deposition before this honourable court.”

Before Ogele was called into the witness box, the EFCC investigator had concluded the latter part of his evidence at the court.

    The hearing continues today.
