EU adopts unified position supporting Morocco’s autonomy plan for Western Sahara

The European Union has adopted a unified position supporting Morocco’s autonomy plan for Western Sahara.,Morocco’s foreign ministry announced in a statement on  Thursday.

The  position was taken during the 15th EU-Morocco Association Council session which  concluded on  Thursday in Brussels.

The 27 EU member states agreed  that “genuine autonomy could be among the most feasible solutions” for the final resolution of the regional dispute.

This position of the 27 EU member States was documented in a joint communiqué by Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates Mr. Nasser Bourita and High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas, at the end of the 15th session of the EU-Morocco Association Council.

“In this joint Communiqué, the EU-27 reiterates the request made by the United Nations Security Council to all parties “to engage in discussions without preconditions and on the basis of the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco in order to reach a definitive political solution.

“In this context, the EU ;praised; Morocco’s willingness “to clarify how autonomy within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty would be implemented,” according to the joint Communiqué,” the statement said.

The ministry added: “The EU welcomed the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797 (2025), which fully supports the efforts of the Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy to facilitate and conduct negotiations based on the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco.”

While many European Union countries have already shown strong support to the Moroccanness of the Sahara and the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco, this new position of the EU marks a fundamental step forward.

It is part of the international momentum generated by His Majesty King Mohammed VI in favor of the Moroccanness of the Sahara and in support of the Autonomy Initiative, which culminated in the adoption of Resolution 2797 by the UN Security Council on October 31, 2025.

The new European position thus reflects the consensus of the 27 EU member States in favor of a definitive resolution of this regional dispute, based on autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty.

This outcome should undoubtedly give new impetus to future bilateral relations and meetings, particularly in view of the upcoming strategic partnership between the two parties.

  • Hakimi predicts better future for Morocco after AFCON Setback

Hakimi predicts better future for Morocco after AFCON Setback

Morocco defender Achraf Hakimi has insisted the national team will continue to move forward with its head held high despite losing the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on home soil.

In the final played at Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat on Sunday, the Atlas Lions were kept waiting to lay their hands on the coveted title. It was Senegal, who were crowned champions of Africa for the second time in their history after edging out the Atlas Lions 1-0.

The final of the 35th  edition of the AFCON went to the penalties after the two nations drew 0-0 in regular and extra time. The decisive moment arrived just three minutes into extra time when Pape Gueye unleashed a stunning left-footed strike from the edge of the area.

Gueye’s effort was very strong, denying standout goalkeeper Yassine Bounou a chance to make a save. Morocco had come close to settling the contest at the end of regulation time.

Awarded a late penalty following a VAR review, the hosts were denied when Edouard Mendy stopped playmaker Brahim Diaz’s Panenka attempt forcing the final beyond the 90 minutes.

Substitute Pape Cherif Ndiaye almost doubled the Lion of Teranga’s lead in the closing stages but Bounou made a superb save. Ndiaye’s effort to score from a rebound was also stopped by the keeper.

Taking to his social media pages, Hakimi, who captained the side that qualified for the final after defeating Nigeria 4-2 on penalties, insisted by losing in the final, it was not the end of the national team adding the future was looking promising.

“After a very difficult few days, trying to absorb everything that has been going on, I needed to express myself from the heart,” wrote Hakimi, who plays for Paris Saint-Germain.

“It’s 35 days of living together, constant effort, discipline and unity. A group that has shown the world that Morocco is not content to compete: Morocco inspires.

“Today, this Moroccan team has become a strong, respected and admired team, like a country that moves forward with confidence and shows the world that it is one of the great nations of football.

“Every training session, every game, and every shared moment has embodied values of greatness: respect, self-giving, humility, and immense pride in representing a nation. We have carried Morocco’s name with honour and brought hope to millions of people, at home and across our borders.”

The right-back, who was named the 2025 African Player of the Year, continued: “The road doesn’t stop here. What we have experienced is a solid foundation for the future.

“With this mind-set, union and ambition, there’s no limit to what this selection can achieve. The future is built by what we plant today. The future looks promising. Morocco will continue to move forward with its head held high.”

Hakimi hailed the support the national team had received from the Moroccan Majesty, referred primarily to King Mohammed VI, and his immense work done to make the 2025 AFCON edition a success.

“I would like to first thank His Majesty, for the immense work done to make this Africa Cup of Nations, undoubtedly, the best in history, organized in our country,” added Hakimi.

“Thank you for your vision, support and constant love for football and Morocco. Thanks also to our President Lekjaa Fouzi, for his total commitment to this selection and for believing in us every step of the way.”

In his message to the fans, he said: “And how not to thank the Moroccan people. Thank you for being there for every game, every minute, every emotion. You’ve been our twelfth man, our strength when legs were heavy and hearts were aching.

“We felt your support in Morocco and every corner of the world.”

Hakimi had a message to coach Walid Regragui. He said: “I want to thank Walid (Regragui) and all his staff, but especially my teammates. For the work, commitment and enormous sacrifice we have made together during this AFCON.”

Morocco, who participated in the AFCON much later than other North African states, made their debut in 1972,and became the second North African side to win the AFCON in 1976.

  • Morocco to file legal complaint over Cup of Nations final fiasco

Morocco to file legal complaint over Cup of Nations final fiasco

Morocco will pursue legal action over the outcome of Sunday’s Africa Cup of Nations final, where opponents Senegal walked off the field to protest a penalty awarded against them but later returned to win the match.

Morocco were beaten 1-0 after extra time by Senegal in the decider in Rabat, but the hosts had a chance to win the trophy with a last-gasp penalty at the end of regulation time.

Senegalese players stormed off in protest after a VAR decision to hand Morocco a spot kick for a tug on the shoulder of striker Brahim Diaz, who then squandered the kick after having to wait some 14 minutes before the Senegal side returned.

“The Royal Moroccan Football Federation announces that it will pursue legal action with the Confederation of African Football and FIFA to rule on the walk-off of the Senegalese national team from the field during the final against the Moroccan national team, as well as on the events surrounding this decision, following the referee’s awarding of a penalty that was deemed correct by all experts,” a statement said.

“This situation had a significant impact on the normal course of the match and on the players’ performance,” it added.

It is unclear what Morocco wants to achieve with their complaint other than being seen to formally remonstrate over the outcome of the match.

Yesterday, FIFA President Gianni Infantino and CAF condemned the behaviour of Senegal players and members of the coaching staff after the chaotic scenes, saying violence and walk-offs had no place in football.

“We also witnessed unacceptable scenes on the field and in the stands – we strongly condemn the behaviour of some ‘supporters’ as well as some Senegalese players and technical staff members,” Infantino said.

“It is unacceptable to leave the field of play in this manner and, equally, violence cannot be tolerated in our sport, it is simply not right.

“We must always respect the decisions taken by the match officials on and off the field of play. Teams must compete on the pitch and within the Laws of the Game, because anything less puts the very essence of football at risk.”

CAF said it was reviewing footage and that disciplinary proceedings will follow, adding that it “condemns the unacceptable behaviour from some players and officials”.

  • AFCON 2025: Fans decry poor officiating in Nigeria’s loss to Morrocco

AFCON 2025: Fans decry poor officiating in Nigeria’s loss to Morrocco

Some football fans have berated the Confederation of African Football (CAF) over poor officiating in Nigeria’s 2-4 loss on penalties to hosts Morocco in the semifinals of the 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The fans took to social media to criticise Ghanian referee Daniel Nii Laryea, who took charge of proceedings on the day, alleging that his decisions were biased.

At the Prince Moulay Abdellah stadium on Wednesday, Morrocco put a dent to Nigeria’s unscathed run in the tournament as both teams could not find the back of the net in120 minutes.

After the game, Super Eagles right-back, Bright Osayi-Samuel, while interviewed by journalists, noted that the referee made numerous unfair calls.

“It was very painful to lose. I think we played well. The back four was amazing and I am proud of the team.

“The manager and board members came down to say they are proud of the team. It is painful that we lost on penalties—which is about luck.

“One thing I would say is that the referee was appalling. I am not saying that is the reason we lost, but (he) was making very wrong decisions.

“It is painful to see that we have such referee in big games like today. However, I wish Morrocco all the best,’’ Osayi-Sameul added.

Nigerian actor, Pere Egbi, on his X account, lambasted referees in AFCON, alleging unprofessionalism while urging CAF to henceforth invite officials outside the continent.

“AFCON should never have referees from Africa officiating its games again.

“Bring in European or American referees who would referee a game with fairness and zero prejudice.

“You can’t tell me that the refereeing in this AFCON has been fair! Referees now come in the pitch to play games as well now.

“This is my take, I don’t care if you like it or not,’’ he said.

A Nigerian journalist, Sulaiman Adebayor, who is in Morrocco, on his X account noted that poor officiating could have affected Super Eagles mentally.

“I can understand people saying we shouldn’t blame the officiating alone but if you understand football & how it works, biased officiating could knock you off psychologically.

“All the niggles & inconsistent calls affected flow of the game and mental state as well.

“Imagine, a Moroccan player kicked the ball away to prevent play from commencing immediately and the referee warned him instead of issuing a card.

“Although, we didn’t play to our level. Substitutions were late and we need to take our penalty sessions seriously in training,’’ Adebayor noted.

Another Nigerian journalist, Osasu Obayiuwana, said he had no words for the center referee.

“…But for @DanielLaryea3, the Ghanaian referee that handled this #MARNGA #AFCON2025 semi-final, I have no good words for him’’.

The loss means Nigeria will face Egypt for the third-place finish on Saturday while hosts Morrocco will take on Senegal in the final game on Sunday.

Chelle hints at tactical shift ahead of Super Eagles’ clash against Morocco

Super Eagles head coach Éric Chelle has suggested a possible change in Nigeria’s approach as his side prepares to face hosts Morocco in tomorrow’s highly anticipated Africa Cup of Nations encounter.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Chelle admitted his players are showing signs of fatigue after a demanding run in the tournament, prompting him to consider a more cautious game plan against the Atlas Lions.

“I’ve noticed that my group is tired; it might be time for me to adjust my approach,” Chelle said. “We might perhaps leave the ball to Morocco and wait for them. We saw that they have difficulties when they play under pressure.”

The Franco-Malian tactician revealed that Nigeria could adopt a compact strategy early in the game before imposing themselves later on.

“We’ll start that way, I think. We’ll hold on in the first half and try to play our game in the second half,” he added.

AFCON Semis: Phillips predicts close contest between Nigeria and Morocco

Shina Phillips, President of Nigeria Pitch Awards, has predicted a tightly contested semi-final fixture between Nigeria and Morocco at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Rabat. Both teams have performed strongly throughout the tournament, each winning their quarter-final matches 2-0 — Morocco against Cameroon and Nigeria against Algeria.

The semi-final match between  Super Eagles  and Atlas Lions at  the  Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium on Wednesday is set to be highly competitive with neither side likely to give ground easily.  But  Phillips believes the Super Eagles hold some advantage despite Morocco’s experienced squad having reached the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup, a historic feat for an African team.

“ This is a high stake  match  and I know both the Super Eagles and the Atlas Lions will be  at their best  for this encounter on Wednesday ,” Phillips told NationSport. “ Frankly, it is difficult to predict  the likely result  of the  match based on the strength  of what the two teams have done so far  in the competition  but  even at that, I think  Nigeria have all the aces.”

According to Phillips,  Nigeria has the motivation factor, aiming to prove their quality after failing to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He emphasized that this AFCON is a platform for Nigeria to demonstrate what the world will be missing in the coming World Cup.

“ Without any  doubt ,  both teams have something  to proof  and I think  the Super Eagles will be motivated  for obvious reasons,” he continued.“ How  do you explain that  such a talented Nigerian team won’t be  at the next World Cup  as such this AFCON  is an opportunity to show  what the  world  will be missing in June.”

Incidentally, both coaches, Eric Sekou Chelle (Nigeria) and Walid Regragui (Morocco), have shown tactical intelligence throughout the tournament, making the semi-final more than just a game of football but a strategic duel.

Phillips has equally  praised Coach Chelle for improving Nigeria’s tactical discipline, confidence, and attacking commitment.

Nigeria’s recent 2-0 victory over Algeria to enter the semifinals was hailed as an important morale booster for Nigerians, especially after missing out on the World Cup.

Phillips expressed belief that winning the AFCON would go some way to compensating Nigerian fans for their World Cup absence.

Dr. Ladipo  in a statement , described the gesture as timely and motivational, expressing confidence that it would spur the team to victory and ultimately help them lift the trophy.

“I want to, on behalf of the Nigeria Football Supporters Club, thank Alhaji Abdul Samad Rabiu for identifying with the Super Eagles,” he said.

Congratulating the team on their 2-0 victory over Algeria, Rabiu praised the players for lifting national morale and urged them to keep making Nigerians proud.

Dr. Oladipo also appealed to Rabiu and other well-meaning Nigerians to support the Football Supporters Club financially, noting that members had travelled to Morocco at personal expense to cheer the team.

“As patriotic Nigerians, they deserve financial support to continue backing the team without hindrance,” he stressed.

He concluded by praying for continued blessings on the businesses of the BUA Group chairman.

Fed Govt: scholarship students in Morocco not abandoned

The Federal Government has debunked reports alleging that Nigerian students on scholarship in the Kingdom of Morocco have been abandoned.

It described the report as false, misleading, and deliberately intended to misinform the public.

This is contained in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja by the Director, Press and Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Education, Mrs. Folasade Boriowo.

She said that the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, clarified that no Nigerian student on a valid federal government scholarship had been neglected.

Alausa explained that all beneficiaries enrolled under the Bilateral Education Scholarship (BES) Programme before 2024 have received their entitlements up to the 2024 budget year, in line with government commitments.

According to him, any delays in outstanding payments are a result of fiscal constraints and are currently being resolved through engagements between the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance.

He assured affected students that the government remains committed to meeting its obligations.

“Any temporary delays in outstanding payments are attributable to fiscal constraints and are currently being addressed through ongoing engagements between the Federal Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance,” he said.

Alausa also refuted claims that new bilateral scholarship awards were granted in October 2025 or thereafter, stating that documents circulating to support such claims were fake and unauthenticated.

He described them as a calculated attempt to discredit government policy and mislead the public.

The minister explained that the federal government discontinued funding for bilateral scholarships abroad, following a policy review which showed that Nigerian tertiary institutions now have the capacity to offer the affected programmes locally.

“Only scholarships that are fully funded by foreign governments are now being supported, with all financial obligations borne entirely by the host countries.

“Notwithstanding this policy shift, the federal government remains fully committed to students already enrolled under the previous arrangements and will continue to support them until the completion of their programmes,” Alausa said.

He emphasised that students who wish to discontinue their studies abroad may apply to return to Nigeria, where they would be reintegrated into suitable institutions, with the government covering their return travel costs.

Alausa, however, reiterated the ministry’s resolve to reform the scholarship system, eliminate inefficiencies, and ensure transparency and prudent use of public funds, while warning against misinformation aimed at undermining the integrity of the education sector.

The Authentic Nigeria Football & Allied Sports Supporters Club (ANFASSC) has arrived in Morocco, led by its National President, Prince Abayomi Ogunjimi, in order to rally support for Super Eagles at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025.

The delegation includes passionate supporters, coordinators, organisers and the ANFASSC driver of vibes, the instrumentalists, prepared to deliver the traditional Nigerian fan energy that has been integral to the Super Eagles’ campaigns for decades.

The arrival in Morocco follows ANFASSC’s earlier reaffirmation of unwavering support for the Super Eagles at AFCON 2025. Despite institutional challenges reported in the lead-up to the tournament, the club’s commitment remains firm and driven by patriotism, unity, and authentic Nigerian support for the national team.

Addressing members upon arrival, Ogunjimi stated that ANFASSC’s mission in Morocco is not just to watch the Super Eagles play, but to feel every moment with them, bringing the rhythm, energy, and soul that Nigeria is known for: from the heartfelt chants to the beating drums, brass instruments, and spirited songs. These musical elements, often referred to by supporters as the “driver of vibes”, are central to the Nigerian fan experience and help lift the team’s spirit inside and outside the stadium.

“In times of pressure,”  Ogunjimi said, “Nigeria’s supporters have always turned up for our team with heart, unity, and pride. That tradition travels with us to Morocco; every chant, every beat, every flag, and every voice is here to carry the Super Eagles forward.”

ANFASSC’s presence comes at a strategic moment, as the Super Eagles prepare to face tough group matches and pursue continental glory. The club reiterates that its role is critical in providing positive psychological support for the team, reinforcing the belief that no matter where the game is played, Nigerian hearts beat with the Super Eagles.

The supporters club also takes this moment to thank Nigerians at home and abroad for their messages of encouragement, collective prayers, and steadfast belief in the team’s potential. ANFASSC remains dedicated to peaceful, passionate, and organised support, and to projecting the best of Nigerian fan culture throughout AFCON 2025.

As the tournament continues, ANFASSC urges all Nigerians to stay united, to support the Super Eagles through every challenge, and to celebrate Nigeria’s rich football legacy with pride and dignity.
