  • Ajimobi makes case for vocational, technical trainings for youths

Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo state has called for the strengthening of vocational and technical education in Nigeria as a way of checking what he described as “the paucity of skilled artisans” in the country.

He made the advocate in Ibadan on Monday while playing host  the participants of the Senior Course (SC) 41 of the Armed Forces Command and State College (AFCSC), Jaji, Kaduna State, who were on a study tour of the state from November 25 to December 1, 2018.

The visitors whose tour was entitled: “Nigeria’s Educational System and National Development”, were received at the Executive Chamber of the Governor’s Office, Agodi Secretariat, Ibadan.

Ajimobi also used the opportunity of the visit to call for improved funding of education with emphasis on the recommendations by the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) and other developmental agencies on funding for education.

Harping on its importance, Governor Ajimobi noted that the poor attitude to vocational and technical education and emphasis on certificates and white-collar jobs have led to a situation whereby skilled artisans would have to be imported from neighbouring countries such as Republic of Togo among others for building construction and tiling jobs.

Represented by his deputy, Otunba Moses Adeyemo, Governor Ajimobi said, “We are not so deep in technical education. Nowadays, if you want to do building construction, you have to go to Republic of Togo to get these artisans and the rest of them. Our people are no longer interested in technical and vocational education.

“This is the time we have to talk about educational development. You will all agree with me that we have a lot of problems in our educational system in Nigeria. We have strikes plaguing our educational system, especially at the tertiary level.

“When you compare the quality of people we are producing in our universities today with graduates of our time many years ago, the quality has reduced greatly. Hardly can all the graduates of today speak correct English for two minutes without missing their tenses. This is the kind of system we have now.

“Apart from the quality, the incessant strikes in different tertiary institutions are what you need to look at and proffer solution. When you go to a private university, it is sure that the student will graduate within four years, if it is a four-year course. This does not happen in public universities and other public tertiary institutions. As researchers, look at the challenges and come out with recommendations.

“Another area we have to look at is this,  UNESCO has given a percentage of amount we have to use in funding education in Nigeria. Are we following that particular advice of UNESCO and other development agencies? Funding is very poor, not only by the Federal Government, even at the state level.

“You will all agree with me that education is the bedrock of development. Anything you want to achieve in this world, if education is not there, you can’t achieve any meaningful thing. We have to look at what we can do.

“There is indiscipline in our school. Students indulge in cultism. Lecturers are no longer safe in the hands of students.  These are some of the factors that have retarded the growth of education in this nation. As researchers, look into the issues and come out with recommendations on way forward.

“We have to look at these and see what we can do. It is when we have all these available to us that Nigeria can develop. We should lay less emphasis on getting certificates alone. Technical and vocational education will lift present development in Nigeria.”

The Acting team lead of the group, Lt. Col Ifeanyi Ajimuka, said the tour is taking place at the same time in some selected states of the federation, adding that the research to be conducted, based on the theme of the study would proffer workable solution to identified problems relating to education in Oyo State.

He further noted that the tour constitutes a major aspect of the geo-strategic curriculum of the AFCSC Senior Course 41, who are currently undergoing a one-year mid-career training in the college, which will afford them the opportunity of conducting on-the-spot research in Oyo State.

“This team is one of the nine teams currently on tour of selected states of the federation as part of this year’s Armed Forces Command and Staff College Nigerian Environmental Study Tour for students of Senior Course 41. The states concurrently being visited across the country are Delta, Federal Capital Territory, Abia, Kwara, Imo, Bauchi, Katsina, Kebbi, and our amiable state, Oyo.

“This group is composed of 26 members, comprising administrative and directing staff of AFCSC, Jaji. At the end of the tour, the students will return to the college, analyse the data obtained, deliberate on their findings and make recommendations. Thereafter, the students will present their reports to the entire college community on Monday January 14, 2019″

  • Emergency: FG handover facility to Oyo govt

As parts of plan to provide succor to the people of the state in times of disaster and emergencies, the Federal Government on Friday handed over some completed facility at the Internally Displaced People’s (IDP) camp, Ibadan.

The facilities including administrative buildings, perimeter fencing, store house, gatehouse and kitchen among others were received by the Deputy Governor of the state, Otunba Moses Adeyemo at the camp site in Akanran, Ona Ara local government, Ibadan, Oyo state.

Adeyemo was accompanied at the handing over by the Ona Ara caretaker chairman, Mr. Sulaimon Olasunmade, the Executive Secretary, State Emergency Management Agency, Mr. Akin Makinde, a representative of the Presidential Committee on Flood Relief and Rehabilitation, Abuja, Mr. John Owoicho, the project consultant as well as the project contractor.

Aside the facility taken over by the government, two hostel facilities are still undergoing construction at the camp site.

The team after the inspection of the facility lauded the contractor for the good job done and agreed to take it over, noting that there was no major setback for the project not to have been taken over by the government.

Representative of the Presidential Committee, Owoicho said the committee decided to hand over the completed facility to the government to ensure adequate security and prevent any form of encroachment of the facility, assuring that it is uppermost in the mind of the government to ensure that the entire project is completed soon and put to use by the host state.

He appealed to the state government and the host local government to ensure that the needed security is provided for the facility as similar efforts in some parts of the country had been damaged and vandalised by unknown and yet to be identified criminals even before the take over by the government.

While thanking the FG for the facility,  the deputy governor who had visited the site for monitoring before the handing over assures the FG of the readiness of the state government in collaboration with the host local government in ensuring that the safety and security of the facility is guaranteed.

He further appealed to the FG to impress the contractors handling the construction of the main hostel to speed up work and complete it as soon as possible so that the state government could complete the takeover and put the facility to full usage.

  • Oyo: Contractors to pay security levy for safe city project

Oyo: Contractors to pay security levy for safe city project

In line with the laws that set it up, the Oyo State Security Trust Fund is set to implement a compulsory security levy across Oyo State. The levy according to the government  would be tailor-made to suit the economic profile of the state as well allow corporate bodies, individuals and all residents to contribute to the security of the state.

Governor Abiola Ajimobi made the disclosure, while addressing stakeholders at a town hall meeting entitled: ‘Public-Private Partnership in Security Funding: Introduction of Security Levy in Oyo State,’ organised by OYSSTF at the House of Chiefs, Parliament Building, Secretariat, Ibadan.
An enabling law of the Oyo State Security Trust Fund (OYSSTF) as amended by the state House of Assembly, the Governor said, was to pave way for the operation of a private sector driven OYSSTF to incorporate the introduction of the security levy into law to the effect that corporate organisations, religious and other social bodies are made to pay yearly security levies to the Trust Fund.

Ajimobi, who was represented by his deputy, Otunba Moses Adeyemo, stated that the security levy was introduced “to ensure that all stakeholders fulfill their roles as responsible citizens of the state and by contributing their quota to the prevailing peaceful atmosphere in Oyo State.

“It is not in doubt that our security agencies have faced a serious shortfall in funding. Funding Oyo State Security Trust Fund is the key to achieving all these goals. On our part, this hover has granted a one per cent security tax on all contracts executed on behalf of the state government, and I am also aware that these deductions have assisted the Fund in the past year.

“For the furtherance of our agenda on safety and security, we have embraced the safe city project, which will proffer cutting edge solutions that will nip crime and criminality in the bud, especially in our major townships. We are currently installing closed circuit television (CCTV) in black spots and business districts in the city to enhance our security architecture. I ask all the stakeholders to ensure successful implementation of the security levy collection exercise that is to commence shortly.
“We inaugurated the joint security outfit codenamed ‘Operation Burst’ with six zonal commands. To give the outfit the needed bite, we procured armoured personnel carriers, a fleet of patrol vehicles and equipped them with state-of-the-earth communication equipment for their operations.

“To enlist the support of stakeholders,  we went a step further by floating the Oyo State Security Trust Fund to raise funds for the improvement of the security architecture of the state. The result of these efforts is a drastic reduction in crime rate and civil unrest manifesting in no major crime or robbery in the last six years”, he said

Speaking, Chairman, OYSSTF, Bayo Adelabu, said the organisation intends to transform the security apparatus in the state from being a reactionary one to an anticipatory one,  saying, “ this vision can be achieved only if there is an upward review in funding of areas such as rehabilitation of existing barracks and quarters, procurement of arms and ammunition, purchase of vehicles, helicopters, surveillance cameras and maintenance of existing stocks as well as procurement of kits and basic equipment for officers.”

Adelabu, who stated that OYSSTF has donated 66 Hilux vans to security agencies, noted that other areas of concern include the establishment of forensic laboratories and upgrade of all police stations across the state to be information technology compliant, as provided for in the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015.
Adelabu said, “A proper fund base is needed for this transformation and the security level will be tailor-made to suit the economic profile of Oyo State. With proper fund base, Oyo State Security Trust Fund will channel these funds to the weak spots within the state security apparatus.”

Commissioner of Police in the state,  Mr. Abiodun Odude, commended the Governor Ajimobi-led administration for putting OYSSTF and ‘Operation Burst’ in place, saying with this, the government has placed security issues on the front burner. He added that security agencies have been trying their best with government’s support to nip crime and criminality in the bud, noting that security is a collective responsibility of all and sundry.

According to him,  in the last one year, the police “have arrested more than 1,000 members of ‘One Million Boys’ and we have charged over 400 of them to court, ” saying the police need intelligence to work with.

President-General, Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII), Chief Yemi Soladoye, urged the OYSSTF to identify the peculiarities of each zone of the state such as Ibadan, Oke-Ogun, Oyo, Ogbomoso, and Ibarapa with a view to tackling insecurity headlong.

He advised that eminent people from each of the zones should be captured into sub-committees for their cities in order to ensure the effectiveness of the project.

The town hall meeting was attended by top government functionaries, members of the state executive council, service commanders in the states, royal fathers, religious leaders, traditional leaders, community leaders, sociocultural groups, traders, local security groups, artisan, representatives of market women among others.

Ajimobi’s deputy declared interest in governorship seat

What started as an open joke between Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo state and his deputy, Otunba Moses Adeyemo, at a public function recently is seeming to become a worthwhile dream, as the deputy governor has indicated his intention to occupy the Agodi Government House, come 2019.

The Governor, at a public function, held at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan, while commending the deputy for his loyalty had jokingly asked if he would want to be the next governor, to which the deputy governor gladly replied in the affirmative.

But while making his intention known to the All Progressive Congress party leaders at the state party secretariat, the deputy governor said he decided to join the governorship race in view of his experience in governance, especially as a deputy governor in the last six years.

According to him, Oyo state needs experience, god-fearing and quality leadership which Governor Ajimobi represents.

Meanwhile, there has been agitations from some quarters that the governorship seat be zoned to the Oke Ogun axis of the state, an odd which is also in favour of Adeyemo.

He said, “The governor has performed very well and there is need to continue his good and quality work. As a loyal party man who has been in the progressive fold all my life, from the days of the Action Group (AG), the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and now the All Progressive Congress (APC).

“ I have equally served the Progressive Parties in various capacities including Caretaker Chairman, Saki East local government, the State Treasurer and Financial Secretary respectively and now a two-term Deputy Governor.

“I believe I am the most suitable candidate to succeed Governor Abiola Ajimobi (Mr. Quality) as the next governor of the State.”

Adeyemo who however promised to abide by all rules and regulations of the party stressed the need to sustain the good legacy of Governor Ajimobi, particularly, the current peaceful atmosphere which he said has enabled the governor to record landmark achievements in the state.

While receiving the guest in company of other party executives, the state party chairman, Chief Akin Oke lauded the deputy governor for joining the gubernatorial aspirants under the platform of the party, saying the party would decide whoever will become its flagbearer at the appropriate time.

Assuring a level playing ground to all the aspirants, the party Chairman said aspirations was open to all eligible members of the party but that many who are being touted to be interested in the plum job have yet to show up at the party secretariat to indicate their interest.

  • Ajimobi seeks CBN support for Oyo agricultural development

Ajimobi seeks CBN support for Oyo agricultural development

Gov. Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State has sought the support of the Central Bank of Nigeria ( CBN ) for the agricultural development of the state, particularly in cassava and maize production.

The governor made the call on Wednesday in Ibadan during the inauguration of the State Project Monitoring Team and State Technical Advisory team of the Federal Government’s Accelerated Agricultural Development Scheme ( AADS ).

The Federal Government launched AADS, as part of its efforts to diversify the nation’s economy, boost food security and transform agricultural production.

Ajimobi, who was represented by the Deputy Governor, Chief Moses Adeyemo, said that Oyo State could develop to become the richest state in the country if its agricultural potential was fully harnessed and utilised.

He urged the CBN, a principal partner in the scheme, to increase funding for the production of cassava and maize, in which the state had a comparative advantage.

He also charged the committee members to put in their best in efforts to eradicate hunger in the country and create job opportunities for the youth.

“The purpose of this inauguration is to quickly heed the call of President Muhammadu Buhari on the diversification of the nation’s economy from oil towards agriculture.

“The president has made it clear to all that agriculture is our surest alternative to oil.

“Our state is leading in the production of maize and cassava and with the support of the CBN; we can be the best producer of these and other crops in the country.

“We want to call on the CBN to look into how to increase its budget for this scheme, especially in the South West (geopolitical zone) as the vegetation here is quite different.

“Our farmers will have to clear thick bushes and trees to cultivate their crops,’’ he said.

Mrs Tolulope Sadipe, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Projects and Bureau of Investments Promotion ( BIP ), said that maize and cassava were picked for Oyo State because the state had in comparative advantage in the cultivation of the two crops.

“The targeted commodities under the scheme include rice, maize, cassava, cotton, soy beans, wheat, cocoa, oil palm, fishery, poultry and dairy production, as well as tomatoes and piggery.

“Each state is expected to identify a maximum of two commodities where it enjoys a comparative advantage.

“Our state has identified maize and cassava as the two commodities of preference,’’ she added.

Sadipe said that the newly inaugurated committee would ensure the sustainability of the state’s efforts to empower farmers and provide employment for the youth in the state.

The special adviser commended the CBN for the visit and the inauguration of AADS Project Monitoring Team.

Members of the State Monitoring Team include Sadipe, the Commissioner for Agriculture, Mr Oyewumi Oyewole and the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture, Mr Victor Atilola,.

Aliyu stated that only 16,000 out of the estimated 200, 000 persons living with HIV in the state are currently on treatment.

“We have a gap between the number of infected persons and those on treatment. We have a gap between infected pregnant women and those receiving treatment.

“We also have issues with the number of new infections recorded,’’ he said.

The NACA boss stated that 10, 000 pregnant women in Oyo State are living with HIV, adding that about 50 people contact HIV in the state on a daily basis.

He said that NACA had proposed to the state government to contribute 0.5 or One percent of their federal allocation towards HIV/AIDS.

Aliyu stated that such contribution by state governments would allow the states to put another 50 per cent of infected persons on treatment.

“For instance, we have 16,000 already on treatment. If the state can put 0.5 percent of the allocation, the state will be able to put 8,000 on treatment,’’ he said.

He assured the governor that they are willing to work with his government to ensure that people living with HIV across the state have access to quality and affordable treatment.

In his response, Gov. Ajimobi assured the delegation of his administration’s readiness to partner with them to bring the figure of infected people to a barest minimum if not totally eradicated.

Work on Lagos-Ibadan rail begins April 14 – NRC

The Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC) says that the construction of the Lagos-Ibadan standard gauge rail would begin on April 14.

The Managing Director of  NRC, Mr Fidet Okhiria, disclosed this on Wednesday in Lagos.

Okhiria advised those who had encroached on the NRC land to start packing their belongings, to avoid their property being destroyed by bulldozers.

“Those that are due for compensation will be compensated because it is part of the contract.

“But those who encroached on the land have to leave the premises as soon as possible because the constructions will begin on Friday.

“We intentionally did not give permits to so many people because we know that one day, the land will be required.

“So we have already mapped out those places we need to remove and they are aware. We have told them to remove their valuables before the bulldozers start work,’’ he said.

The MD said the projects would bring lots of socio-economic development to communities and major town along the axis.

According to him, the NRC will deliver consistent services that will attract lots of commercial and social activities that will serve as employment to the teeming youths of the various communities.

  • Nigeria lucky to have Buhari now – Ajimobi

Oyo state Governor, Abiola Ajimobi, has said that Nigeria is lucky to have President Muhammadu Buhari at the helm of affairs otherwise things would have degenerated.

He added that the alleged deep-rooted corruption that characterized the immediate past administration almost exacerbate the country’s already precarious situation.

The governor spoke at the 2017 Annual General Conference of Cherubim and Seraphim Church of Nigeria held on Friday.

Ajimobi, who was represented by his deputy, Chief Moses Adeyemo, urged Nigerians to be patient with the Buhari administration, saying things would soon improve.

He said, “Nigeria will soon experience the desired change we crave for. Many countries have suffered from the so-called recession and they came out of it stronger. Let us all pray for Nigeria just as the bible admonishes us to pray for the peace of Jerusalem.

“Nigeria is lucky to have President Buhari in the saddle; if not the current challenges would have been exacerbated because of the deep-seated corruption of the past administration. Corruption has eaten deep into all facets of life in the country.

“We are crying of hardship in Nigeria because people no longer believe in God. If we are to behave the way we worship God in churches and mosques Nigeria will be a better place. Nigerians have run away from God.

“Bible does not teach us to take innocent lives and to steal collective patrimony for the benefit of few and their yet unborn children. Let us restore the dignity of man and love our neighbours.”

Earlier, Supreme Head, C&S Church of Nigeria, Prophet Solomon Alao, hailed the military for reclaiming the Sambisa Forest, adding that the troops have performed creditably well.

•Afe Babalola: maintain peace with other Obas

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade, has said Ile-Ife remains the source of the Yoruba.

He urged Yoruba groups to unite to dislodge those he said “are claiming to be what they are not and what God has not given them an opportunity to be”.

Oba Sijuwade spoke yesterday at the public presentation of the Ekiti Historical and Royal Compendium in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital.

At the occasion were Governor Kayode Fayemi; his wife, Bisi; Deputy Governor Prof. Modupe Adelabu; House of Assembly Speaker Adewale Omirin; and founder of the Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), Aare Afe Babalola.

Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola was represented by his Special Adviser on Chieftaincy Affairs, Samuel Odewumi.

Also present were Oyo State Deputy Governor Moses Adeyemo; the Yeyelua of Ile-Ife, Olori Mojisola Sijuwade; Chairman of the Ekiti Council of Traditional Rulers and the Onitaji, Oba Adamo Babalola; the Elemure of Emure-Ekiti Oba Emmanuel Adebayo; Senator Babafemi Ojudu; Chairman, Alimosho Local Government, Lagos, Adekunle Sola and Senator Gbenga Aluko, among others.

Oba Sijuwade said those who twist history to associate monarchical supremacy to other sources aside Ile-Ife were only trying to rewrite history and attack the origin of the Yoruba.

He said: “Today, even with books and documents, a few senior traditional rulers in Yorubaland are still claiming what they are not and what God has not given them an opportunity to be. Until we put such people in order, it will be impossible to have lasting peace in Yorubaland.

“For centuries, Yorubas have had no other source than the cradle, Ile-Ife, the core centre of the great dispersal. Migrants founded cities, communities and kingdoms and unmistakable references are made to other sources at all times.

“It is saddening that today, the wet blankets are at work. Yoruba tradition is being bastardised in all ways. The foundation of the historical antecedents of progenitors and founders of the dynasty are being daily twisted, concocted, reconfigured and rewritten for personal ego, selfish reasons and individual satisfaction.

“Books like the Historical and Royal Compendium shall, at all times, put an end to the lie of any mischief maker, who may want to tamper with the properly documented historical origin, antecedents and acclaimed pedigree of the people.”

Babalola, who chaired the event, urged Oba Sijuwade to maintain peace with other Yoruba Obas, saying: “Based on the point your imperial majesty just raised on the distortion of history, I advise that you make peace with your brother Obas. This is the only way we can be united and enjoy peace.

“Historical accounts of traditional rulers, rather than those written by some authors, will reduce the controversies trailing our history. One thing is valid here; nobody knows the history of parents than their children.”

Fayemi described the book as a “rich collection of the history of the 131 towns in the state”.

He said his administration planned to establish a museum within the Ekiti Civic Centre under construction to preserve historical documents and artefacts.

Fayemi described the publication as a strong political instrument, adding that the role of history in achieving development, peace and unity cannot be over-emphasised.

He pledged to continue to interact with traditional rulers to ensure growth across the state.
