  • Moses Simon joins Nantes on loan

Moses Simon has signed for French Ligue 1 club Nantes on a season-long loan from Spanish La Liga outfit Levante.

Simon becomes the latest Nigeria international to move to France this summer after Victor Osimhen’s switch to Lille and Henry Onyekuru’s move to Monaco.

After joining Levante on a five-year deal last August, the pacy winger went on to make 19 appearances at the Valencia outfit with a goal to his credit in his debut campaign.

The move reunites the 24-year-old with ex-Gent teammate and Mali international Khalifa Coulibaly as he aims for improved playing time in the 2019-20 season with the Stade de la Beaujoire outfit.

Simon was a member of the Nigeria squad that finished third at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

He has been handed the number 27 shirt at Nantes and will be hoping to make his Ligue 1 debut against Marseille on Saturday.

  • ‘Decide on Super Eagles’ preferred tactical formation before AFCON’

Waidi Akanni, an ex-international, has advised the Super Eagles Technical Adviser, Gernot Rohr, to decide on what tactical formation best suits the team ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Akanni told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday that a notable style of play was needed in order for the team to perform well at the AFCON tournament.

NAN reports that the Super Eagles beat the Pirates of Seychelles on Friday at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba in their final qualification match for the 2019 AFCON.

“The coach has to show us his formation. In all what he has been doing, I honestly have not seen the formation he is playing. We have to have a formation.

“We should have a recognisable style of play. If we don’t have a style of play going to the Nations Cup proper in Egypt, it will be very difficult for the Super Eagles when they meet tougher opponents,” the former Super Eagles defender said.

Akanni said with the calibre of players at Rohr’s disposal, he should by now be known for a particular style of play.

“He needs a good combination of players. The coach needs to let us know if he is playing 4-4-2, 4-3-3 or 3-5-2.

“We now know the core of players available to him. We should therefore know his tactical formation based on the players we have.

“Rohr has to show us that he has a style of play, which, for now I can’t see in the team,” he said.

The Super Eagles ended the qualifiers as Group E leaders with 13 points, having won four games, lost one and drawn one.

A first half penalty kick by Odion Ighalo and two second half goals from Henry Onyekuru and Moses Simon gave Nigeria a routine 3-1 victory over Seychelles on Friday.

The victory cemented the Super Eagles’ top-place finish from their group, having already qualified for the continental showpiece slated for June in Egypt.

However, Akanni was not so impressed with the performance of the national team, especially in the first half.

“It was an average game by all standards. The first half was below par, but the Super Eagles brought some momentum into the game in the second half.

“More important was the fact that they were able to find a way to score those two goals in the second half. Football is a game of goals and a team can only be taken seriously when they score goals.

“So, it was okay that they got three goals,” he said.

Rohr had invited some new players for the Seychelles match, including former Flying Eagles defender Valentine Ozonwafor, former FIFA U-17 World Cup winner Victor Osimhen and Denmark-based forward Paul Onuachu.

Akanni said although the new players have to be gradually integrated into the senior national team, the coach should have handed them a start against Seychelles.

“I would have expected the coach to start the new players by resting Ighalo, Etebo, Ndidi and some of the other familiar players in his starting line-up.

“But, somehow, I understand that he wanted to win the game first. So, he didn’t want to take too much risk.

“The fact is that when you want to test new players, especially in a game of little significance like this, you have to give them good game time.

“I believe Rohr should have taken the risk of starting many of the new guys,” the former Lagos State Football Association chairman said.

The Super Eagles will face the Pharaohs of Egypt in an international friendly on Tuesday at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba.

  • MOSES SIMON: I’m at home with African food

New Levante forward Moses Simon tells TAIWO ALIMI that living and working in Europe has not robbed him of his taste for African delicacies, such as pounded yam and egusi soup.

One hundred and eight appearances for Belgium elite division club AAA Gent in three years are enough for Nigeria winger Moses Simon to worm his way into the hearts of fans.

Along the way, Simon, aka ‘daddy’, notched 21 goals with multiple assists.

The Super Eagles’ striker , who missed the Russia World Cup following  an eleventh hour injury , said he would miss fans, managers, coaches and colleagues of ‘Buffalo’ as he moved on to greater things in the Spanish La liga with Levante.

“When I came to Gent I was a teenager and they took care of me,” recalled Simon with a sense of nostalgia. “I was taught the ropes in Belgium. They have great managers and coaches. We are a big family and I will miss Belgium. It is a great city.”

However, three seasons in Belgium could not erase some things that he had picked up from home.

“The food in Belgium is great but I never get around to it. I don’t eat it much. I go for the African food. It is not difficult to find African food because there is a lot of African kitchen and restaurants in Belgium. “Then, my wife cooks excellent African dishes so that eliminates eating out a lot of times. I love pounded yam and egusi soup. It is healthy and I can eat it many times.”

It is the same for Simon in the area of entertainment and fashion. “I love the African agbada (traditional Yoruba garb). Though I don’t wear much of it in Belgium because of the weather, whenever I come home I can’t have enough of it, especially during special occasions. If you don’t see me in agbada, then I would be wearing the simple ‘buba and sokoto.’

“I listen to African music. I love Nigerian artist. I have loads of their stuff and we listen to them in my home. Before the World Cup, some of us in the Super Eagles were practicing ‘shaku shaku’ dance (a dance hall step made popular by Nigerian rapper Olamide) to show off whenever we score any goal in Russia (Simon missed Russia World Cup by injury). I love to show off my steps whenever I want to dance,” Simon said.

Home, Jos-Nigeria also brings fond memories for Simon, who started kicking football on the streets as a boy. “Growing up in Jos was a privilege because many talented footballers came out from there. I grew up on the street kicking football wherever we found space. Becoming a footballer has always been my dream. I followed all the big players on TV. I later played for my school. I was snapped up by Golden Boot Soccer Academy from one of my school matches. I was in the academy for seven years and learnt the rudiments of the game there. We had good coaches who looked out for us and helped me move abroad. I picked up my tricks from the street.”

Unlike many of his peers whose parents don’t take kindly to career in football, his parents supported and prayed for him.

“My mother did not fret when I told her I wanted to be a footballer. Rather, she prayed for me and used to supply me with my needs. She was my pillar of support, always praying for my success.”

While crediting his religious inclination to his late mom, Simon acknowledged his father for his love for tradition, culture and family.

“I am deeply religious and I can say I inculcate that from my mother. She is always praying for me and at a tender age she made me understand that one with God is majority. She taught us to be close to God wherever we find ourselves and that we would enjoy His favour when we do so.

“Moving abroad was not easy because I was close to my family and did not want to leave them. But I had to continue my future. My family understood my choice and my father told me I would succeed. We are quite close. He likes to call me ‘daddy.’”

Simon was recently recalled to the Nigeria national team. He spoke more about his return, transfer to Levante and on other issues.

    BEGINNING

I have a humble background. My family live in Jos and I have fond memories growing up in Jos. In fact, it was a privilege because many talented footballers come out from there. We used to look up to these great players and that fuelled my dream. I grew up on the street kicking football wherever we found space. Becoming a footballer has always been my dream. I followed all the big players on TV. I later played for my school where I was snapped up by Golden Boot Soccer Academy from one of my school matches. I was in the academy for seven years and learnt the rudiments of the game there. We had good coaches who looked out for us and helped me move abroad. I picked up my tricks from the street. I watched Celestine Babayaro play for Chelsea on TV and we wanted to be like him one day playing in Europe.

    MISSING THE WORLD CUP

That episode is behind me now. But I must thank those who identified with me during that trying moment. My colleagues in Gent were wonderful. They stood by me during my injury and got me back to fitness. I will like to thank all my fans for the love, support and prayers during this trying time, you all are amazing people. It’s just a pity that I couldn’t make it to Russia but man proposes, God disposes.

The Nigerian team to the World Cup was a very united and that is largely due to the effort of the coach, Gernot Rohr, and the leadership of the Nigeria Football Federation. A healthy spirit in camp is really important going into a major tournament like the World Cup and that we did not make it beyond the first round does not mean nothing was achieved. Nigeria played well and we need to build on that success.”

    LIVERPOOL MISS

Before Gent accepted Levante bid for me, I was linked to Liverpool and other teams in Europe. I wanted to play in England. That is my dream since I was a kid watching the EPL on TV. My wish is to play in England, but that has to wait.  Liverpool is a very big team with a large squad, the type of team where you have to work extra hard to get games. Most players like such challenges and I am not different. But Levante met all the conditions for my transfer and here I am. I am young and looking forward to playing in England. Right now I am committed to Levante and I intend to honour that contract to the letter.

    LEVANTE

Levante is a great place to be. I have settled in nicely and soon I know I will have my time and will be all over the place. We have a compact team. We have been winning important matches and I’m happy that I am listed. I have played some minutes and bidding my time. We started badly but we are picking up the pieces. The team is evolving and once the belief mentality sets in fully, we will be unstoppable.

  • Russia 2018: Simon not fit for World Cup, Rohr says

Eagles Head Coach Gernot Rohr has revealed that injured Moses Simon would not be fit to merit a berth in the final 23-man squad for the Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Rohr stated this during his pre-match press conference before the team’s training session at the Wembley Stadium on Friday.

Simon was initially ruled out of the World Cup by Head Coach Gernot Rohr after the player’s first scan results confirmed he would be out of the tournament.

However, Moses requested for a further scan in the UK, with Rohr granting him his wish to prove his fitness ahead of the world cup.

Reports on the NFF official Twitter handle on Wednesday had quoted Coach Rohr as saying that he was willing to wait and see if the player could make a late push for the World Cup in Russia.

But Rohr hinted that the Gent of Belgium winger had finally been ruled out of the World Cup after a latest medical scan confirmed that he won’t be fit for the competition.

“We have all our players in camp. Victor Moses was the last to arrive camp and he has had just one training session with us and will have another today (Friday).

“All the players are ready for the World Cup except for Simon Moses who is out for four weeks,” he said.

NAN also reports that with the team’s first choice goalkeeper Carl Ikeme also ruled out of the World Cup on health grounds, the fight for Eagles’ number one shirt has generated heated arguments among the fans.

Young goalkeeper, Francis Uzoho, seems to be the favourite after the team’s last three games against Poland, Serbia and DR Congo but Rohr insisted that the position was still up for grabs.

“Uzoho came in against Argentina and since then he has been showing confidence and making great efforts. However, we have three goalkeepers,” he said.

The former Niger Republic and Gabon coach also played down the Super Eagles’ chances of becoming the first African country to win the World Cup.

“We are not among the favourites. If you look at the FIFA ranking, you will see there are teams who are better than us.

“It is important for us not to think we can win the World Cup,” Rohr said.

He also highlighted the importance of Saturday’s friendly match against England to the team’s quest of having a successful outing at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

The three-time African champions will face the Three Lions in their second pre-World Cup friendly at Wembley Stadium.

Captain Mikel Obi, Alex Iwobi and a number of first team regulars were not involved from the start in Monday’s 1-1 draw against Democratic Republic of Congo in Port Harcourt.

However, Rohr noted that he would name a strong side against Gareth Southgate’s men.

“Tomorrow, we would play a big team like England, it is an important game for us.

“It will be an interesting game for us. In the game against Congo, we didn’t play our best team, but we will change things against England and play our best players.

“The atmosphere is going to be great and we hope to enjoy it and possibly win the game,” he said. (NAN)

  • Moses Simon to undergo final scan in London

Super Eagles’ winger, Moses Simon is set to undergo one more final scan in London ahead of Nigeria’s game against England this weekend, with reports suggesting Head Coach Gernot Rohr is willing to wait and see if the player can make a late push for the World Cup in Russia, AOIFootball.com can confirm.

Simon was initially ruled out for the tournament by Rohr after the player’s scan results confirmed he would be out for the tournament.

However, Moses requested for a further scan in the UK, with Rohr granting him his wish to prove his fitness ahead of the World Cup.

The winger scored once and provided two assists for Nigeria as they went unbeaten throughout the qualifying series and will no doubt be a massive miss, should further scan confirm him unfit to play at the Mundial in Russia next month.

  • Dalung promises to deliver 2018 World Cup ticket

Dalung promises to deliver 2018 World Cup ticket

Minister of Youth and Sports, Solomon Dalung, says the Super Eagles will deliver the 2018 World Cup ticket to Nigerians.

Dalung told newsmen on Wednesday in Abuja that the team was well prepared for the world cup qualifier against the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon coming up on Friday in Uyo.

“We have prepared very well and the team is in high spirit, ready to do their best.

“We want to assure Nigerians that we will definitely make good our promise of delivering the ticket for the 2018 World Cup in Russia,” said the minister.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Super Eagles will aim to achieve a 12 time triumph over the Lions of Cameroon when both teams meet at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.

Nigeria has won 11 of the 19 previous encounters with Cameroon and secured four draws, while Cameroon had beaten the Eagles only four times.

The two teams last clashed at the Edmond Machtens Stadium in Brussels in October 2015 when the Eagles won by 3-0 through goals by Efe Ambrose, Moses Simon, and Odion Ighalo.

  • AFCON Qualifier: ‘Defeating Super Eagles is very interesting’

AFCON Qualifier: ‘Defeating Super Eagles is very interesting’

South African national team coach, Stuart Baxter, says winning Nigeria in an African Nations Cup qualifier is very interesting.

Baxter made the assertion at Uyo on Saturday after his team beat the Super Eagles 2-0 at the Godswill Akpabio stadium.

The South African coach said “We opened up the game in the first half but unfortunately we did not score. Beating Nigeria is very interesting.

“Nigeria is a very good side but my boys prevented them from scoring. We are trying to develop our boys and expose them,’’ he said.

South African striker, Tokelo Rantie lived up to his billing as he scored in the 56th minute while Percy Tau who replaced Rantie, scored the second goal for his side in the 83rd minute.

The visitors sized up the Eagles in the first half, took advantage of their slower opponents in the second half of the match stringed crisp passes that sunk the Eagles in their backyard.

Moses Simon, Etebo Oghenekaro and Ndidi Wilfred were easily the best Eagles on the pitch on a day the team failed to fly.

Incidentally, Rantie was the player whose goals stopped the Nigeria senior male football team in the 2014 nation’s cup qualifier.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports Saturday’s defeat by South Africa was the first loss of Gernot Rohr as Super Eagles Head coach.

Rohr said, after the match, that his boys played well in the first half but were overpowered by the experience of the South Africans in the second half.

According to him, We had difficulties in finishing the match because we made so many efforts in the first half while some of our players were tired in the second half.

“We tried to open the wings and bring power to the team but unfortunately it did not yield fruits.

“I have trust in these boys because they played well in the first half but they could not score. We win and lose together.

“I think the next game with Cameroon will be very interesting. It will be better, much, much better,” he said.

  • Nigeria Drops Moses, Mikel for Nations Cup Qualifiers, Invites Youssef

Nigeria Drops Moses, Mikel for Nations Cup Qualifiers, Invites Youssef

Nigeria have left out Chelsea star Victor Moses from their 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against South Africa next month.

Captain John Obi Mikel is also among the high-profile names missing in the squad list released by Super Eagles Coach, Genort Rohr for the match against South Africa.

Moses is being omitted despite having a splendid season with Chelsea while Mikel is understood to still be recuperating from an injury setback that has forced him undergo surgery,

Also conspicuously missing from the list of 23 players are the China-based duo of Odion Ighalo and Brown Ideye.

MFM FC strike partners, Stephen Odey and Sikiru Olatunbosun, have also been overlooked as Rohr takes a gamble with a lot of fresh inclusion in his list.

The Super Eagles host the Bafana Bafana at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo in their first AFCON 2019 qualifying match.

The last time both sides met was also at the same venue, in a 2015 AFCON qualifier, which ended 2-2 and subsequently knocked Nigeria out of qualifying for the 2015 AFCON just two years after winning it.

There is also another surprise regarding the list, as little-known Maroof Youssef, who plays for Zamalek in Egypt was included.

    The full list

Goalkeepers: Daniel Akpeyi, Ikechukwu Ezenwa and Dele Alampasu

Defenders: Elderson Echiejile, Kenneth Omeruo, Tyrone Ebuehi, Chidozie Awaziem, Shehu Abdullahi, William Ekong and Maroof Youssef

Midfielders: Ogenyi Onazi, John Ogu, Oghenekaro Etebo, Alhassan Ibrahim, Mikel Agu and Wilfred Ndidi

Attackers: Ahmed Musa, Kelechi Iheanacho, Alex Iwobi, Moses Simon, Henry Onyekuru, Olanrewaju Kayode and Victor Osimhen.

  • Why my father calls me ‘Daddy’ -MOSES SIMON

Why my father calls me ‘Daddy’ -MOSES SIMON

He’s just 21, yet Moses ‘Daddy’ Simon has become something like a wonder player in Belgian Pro League club KAA Gent and a regular in Nigeria Super Eagles. Arriving Gent only two seasons ago, the pocket dynamite has conquered the hearts of Buffalo fans. Simon has scored 13 times in a remarkable 71 games, the steady player in the heart of Genk, almost elusive to defenders while stealing away into the box to score.

Simon will not forget his hat trick against Lokeren in his third league game, after which he was named Belgian league player of the week. He quickly became a key player in coach Hein Vanhaezebrouck’s formation and helped Genk win their first ever national Championship title in May 2015. Two months later, Simon assisted in winning the 2015 Belgian Super Cup against cup winners Club Brugge.

Simon is modest and deeply religious. He enjoys a close relationship with his father, who gives him the nickname, Daddy, something that has stuck on him in Belgium and among his teeming fans.  ‘Daddy’ is my pet name. My father always calls me like that. In fact, he still does. I love my father. That’s why I always put ‘daddy’ between my first and last name. Sometimes my mother also calls me daddy, but actually my father is fond of calling me by that name. As for Moses, I think my parents just fell for that name as a biblical figure……..I read the Bible constantly in my room. In all I do, I put God in the first place. I also talk about God in interviews: to glorify his name. I always pray to God because I believe in Him. In all I do, I seek His blessing. I trust Him and call His name. He is everything for me. Sometimes, Nana Asare and I talk religion because he is also a Christian. We share thoughts because you cannot know everything about the Bible. We also pray in our free time before or after the training.’

Simon speaks more about life in Belgium, offers from other notable clubs and the Super Eagles. He spoke with Taiwo Alimi. Excerpts:

    Beginning

When I was 8 years old, I fell in love with the game. It brings joy to me. Becoming a footballer has always been my dream. I followed all major players on TV. First I played street football, like so many African boys with boyfriends and my brother. Sometimes it happened that I don’t even remember to eat nor get hungry when I am playing football. I began playing competitive football at school, when I was 9 or 10 years old, and got noticed by the Golden Boot Soccer Academy, who took my brother and me in. They believed in me and helped me achieved professional skill. My trainers told me I had qualities, but I had to believe in myself and my skills. My brother is still playing in the Academy.

And who is the best among the two of you?

(Laugh) I can say I’m the best. But he can’t say that too. God knows who the best is.

    Who is your role model?

My role model while horning my skill at the Academy was Ronaldinho. I followed him on TV and became a big fan of his. He was my hero. I also like the style of Cristiano Ronaldo, but Ronaldinho remains my hero of all time.

How did you get your nickname ‘Daddy’?

‘Daddy’ is my pet name. My father always calls me like that. In fact, he still does. I love my father. That’s why I always put ‘daddy’ between my first and last name. Sometimes my mother also calls me daddy, but actually my father is fond of calling me by that name. As for Moses, I think my parents just fell for that name as a biblical figure.

    Are you religious?

“Yes! I read the Bible constantly in my room.

We also pray in our free time before or after the training.

    How is life in Belgium?

Life in Belgium is good. I’m glad I’m here. In my spare time I go out with some of my teammates for drink and sightseeing, no alcohol, a coke or so for me. I don’t take alcohol because my religion forbids it and I am happy about it.

Though I miss Nigeria, I’m comfortable here and I’ve had time to go to Nigeria. On average, I go to my country three to four times a year.  And my families have come and go too. They love it here too and they want me to settle here and stay in Belgium.

What about offers from other clubs?

My intention is to stay in Belgium, but only God really knows my next move.  Maybe I’ll leave the club, maybe I’ll stay here for twenty years. Imagine: A big club comes with a lot of money. But I get injured and the transfer will not go on. That’s why I say it’s God that will determine where I will go.

It is believed that Nigeria chances to World Cup 2018 are bright?

Nigeria are four points ahead of Cameroon that alone should give me confident about our chances of making it to the World Cup, but we have games to go before the qualifiers comes to an end, so we have to stay focus and not give other team the chance to put us under pressure or catch us.

What is the secret behind Eagles good form under Gernot Rohr

I can’t really say but I believe we are stronger as a unit now and more experienced. Even the senior players we have in the team have also played a part. You see most of us in the team have played together at various youth level for Nigeria in the past as well, that has also helped cohesion both on and off the pitch.
