  • Seven killed in fresh attack in Benue

    Suspected  armed  Fulani Herdsmen have attacked and killed seven Tiv farmers inside  African Church Mbamondo , Ukember Agya, Logo Local Government area in Benue state, in the early hours of Thursday.

    But the Police Public Relation Officer (PPRO) Moses Yamu told The Nation on phone that he was yet to get the information.

    Yamu, a DSP however promised to get back to the Nation.

    The attacked on African Church attack came in less than 48 hours after Fulani herdsmen attacked and killed two priest and 17 worshipers during a funeral mass in Gwer east local government area in the state .

    The Nation gathered that the heavy Fulani terrorists sacked the entire community and leaves several others injuried.

    A victim, James Iorlaha, who escaped the church attacked told The Nation on phone that the attackers  stormed Mondo settlement about 12.22am and started shooting sporadically at those  who were asleep in the church and primary school buildings.

    Most of the victims are internally Displaced Persons ( IDPs) ,who had been attacked early and now taking refuge at the church and primary school block .

    Iorlaha stated that the heedmen set many houses ablaze while scores sustained injuries.

    “The Marauders killed the people and sacked the entire village, also proceeded to Zaki Biam/ Wukari road, mounted roadblocks, robbed motorcycles and other valuables

    Chairman of Logo LGA, Richard Nyajor, confirmed that herdsmen attacked Mbamondo clan of Ukemberagya Gaambe-Tiev and killed so many people inside African Church .

    “The casualties may be much but so far, we have recovered about seven corpses and we are still searching for more. These killers have taken over our entire areas and now leaving at the mercy of God said Richard Nyajo.

    “I want to use this medium to call on federal government to intensify effort and bring these mindless killings to an ends”, Nyajor said.

  • Herdsmen attacks: Death toll rises to twenty-five

    The death toll from Fulani herdsmen attacked on communities in Gwer -West Local Government area has increased to 25 people.

    Suspected Fulani militia launched a midnight attacked on settlements in Mbakyondu, Sengev and Mbakpa districts in Gwer -west local government on Thursday.

    The Fulani herdsmen were armed with sophisticated weapons shot and killed many harmless farmers and set their houses ablaze.

    The Police spokesman Moses Yamu, a DSP, issued a press statement and said eight (8) bodies of Tiv farmers had been found in the forest following the attacked.

    But a member of the community Francis Ugbede, who spoke to the The Nation on phone, said more than bodies are missing and so over 25 persons have been killed during the midnightattacked.

    He said more bodies were being recovered from the thick forest and many other are in the hospital with high degree of injuries.

    Mr. Ugbede said there is likely hood the death toll may increase as result of missing persons .

    Police arrest 59 suspects over Wadata crisis in Benue

    Benue Police command said it had arrested 59 persons in connection with the recent cult-related crises in some parts of Makurdi, the state capital.

    Several people were injured and property worth millions of naira destroyed during the crisis.

    The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, ASP Moses Yamu, made the disclosure in an interview on Monday in Makurdi.

    He said the command had already deployed additional personnel to the affected parts of the town to restore peace and and order as well as to check the spread of the crisis.

    The PPRO said the arrested suspects would be charged to court as soon as investigations were concluded.

    He advised Makurdi residents not to panic as security operatives were in control of the situation.

    Gov. Samuel Ortom, had on Sunday during an emergency stakeholders meeting in Makurdi, appealed to parents and guardians, to advise their children and wards against involvement in cult activities.

    He warned that his administration would neither condone cult activities nor spare anyone culpable of the act.

    Security operatives are now patrolling the streets to prevent further break down of law and order.

    Shops and other business places however, remained closed in the affected area.

    Fulani herdsmen kill two policemen in Benue

    Suspected Fulani herdsmen on Tuesday killed two mobile policemen in Awashua village, Logo local government area of Benue State.

    The state Police Public Relation Officer, Moses Yamu, confirmed the killings and said another mobile policeman who sustained gunshot wound is receiving treatment at the Benue State University Hospital in Makurdi.

    According to Yamu, the mobile policemen were members of a special security force deployed to Logo LGA following the herdsmen killings in the area.

    He said the herdsmen attacked  the mobile policemen camp in Awashua village.

    “When the policemen over powered the militia men, they beat a retreat and ambushed the policemen where two officers were shot and killed. Their riffles were also taken away,” Yamu said.

    Six killed in fresh Benue attack

    Six persons were on Saturday killed in a fresh attack on a Tiv settlement by suspected Fulani armed militia in Benue State.

    The state Police Public Relation Officer, Moses Yamu, confirmed the attack in a chat with our correspondent.

    However, he has not been able to ascertain the number of casualties in the attack.

    The bloody attack took place at a settlement called Tse-Kimbir in Logo local government area of the state.

    A member of the community, Prince Cephas Hough, told The Nation that the marauders armed with AK 47 rifles stormed Tse- Kimbir settlement in the early hours of Saturday.

    He said they went from house to house and robbed the inhabitants of their valuables before shooting six people dead.

    Those killed in the attack were – Kwaghve Baaki, Terhemen Kwaghve, Ioryue Tsehemba,Zahemen Tsavkuleve, Ahemba Shaku and a visitor who reportedly came from Nongov, in Guma local government area of the state.

    Police arrest eight herdsmen over Benue killings

    The Police in Benue say they  have  arrested eight herdsmen over the death of 10 persons and seven livestock guards in Guma and Logo Local Governments of the state on Monday.

    The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, ASP Moses Yamu, announced this in a statement.

    “Eight herdsmen, six in Guma and two in Logo, had been arrested in connection with the attacks,” the police spokesman said.

    He added that the command had made additional deployments to the troubled area to forestall further occurrence and restore confidence of the people.

    Yamu stressed the situation in the two local government areas had been brought under control while investigation was ongoing.

    He said:“They attacked Tomater village in Sengev Council ward, Akor village in Nzorov council ward and Bakin Kwata village in Umanger council ward of Guma LGA.

    “Among those killed were seven (7) members of Benue State Livestock Guards, their vehicle burnt and an uncertain number of persons injured in separate attacks between 31/12/2017 and 02/01/2018.

    “Again, Agba-Uko near Azege village and Tse-Aga village of Logo LGA experienced the same fate, where one person was killed, one motorcycle burnt and four persons injured.

    “All the injured from both LGAs are currently undergoing treatment in various hospitals in the State.”

    According to him, five combined teams of mobile and conventional policemen led by Assistant Commissioner of Police, Operations, ACP Emmanuel Adesina have engaged the armed herdsmen in a gun duel in Guma.

    The Benue Anti-Open Grazing Law came into effect on November 1, 2017 to forestall attacks on Benue communities by suspected herders.

    The law stipulates five year jail term or an option of N1 million fine for violators.

    The attack is the first by suspected herdsmen since the law came into effect.

    Benue Police Command summons PDP governorship candidate over Yandev crisis

    The Benue Police Command on Wednesday summoned Mr Terhemen Tarzoor, PDP candidate in the 2015 governorship race, over the July 7 violence in Yandev, Gboko Local Government.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that Tarzoor, who arrived the police headquarters at 4 p.m., spent four hours with a police investigation team, responding to questions over his alleged role in the crisis.

    NAN also reports that Tarzoor’s invitation followed a petition by Mr David Vergwa, APC Youth Leader in Gboko Local Government, to the Commissioner of Police in Benue.

    In the petition, a copy of which was made available to NAN, Vergwa alleged that he was attacked, injured and his house destroyed by PDP supporters, in a clash with their APC counterparts.

    “The rampaging youths claimed that their attack was targeted at Tarzoor, but I was the one hit,” Vergwa claimed.

    Mr Moses Yamu, Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Command, who briefed newsmen on the development, said that Tarzoor was invited because his name featured in the petition.

    “We invited him to state his side of the story; he wrote his statement and was allowed to go. But we shall invite him to explain more if the need arises,” he said.

    NAN reports that hundreds of party supporters accompanied Tarzoor to the police headquarters.

    Efforts to speak with Tarzoor proved abortive because of the large and rowdy crowd around him.

  • Suspected herdsmen attack Benue villages, eight killed

    Eight persons were killed following an attack by suspected herdsmen, on two villages in Logo Local Government Area of Benue State on Monday.

    The Spokesman of the state Police Command, ASP Moses Yamu, confirmed the attacks in a statement in Makurdi.

    Yamu said the attacks on Akaa and Tse-Orlalu villages in Mbamar, Ugondo communities, were perpetrated by suspected herdsmen late on Sunday.

    He said that the police had yet to establish the motive for the attack and that adequate personnel had been drafted to the villages to restore normalcy.

    He said the attackers invaded the villages, killed eight people and injured many others.

    Meanwhile, an eye-witness told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday that the herdsmen came in from Taraba State through Abaji and Mbamar in Ugondo community,

    “They started first by attacking Akaa village before advancing to neighbouring Orlalu.’’

    The eye-witness, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that several villagers were still missing.

    NAN recalls that suspected herdsmen had attacked some communities in the past, including Agatu community, where 10 persons were killed.

    Meanwhile, efforts by security agencies and the state government are still ongoing to curtail the restive herdsmen and protect communities.
