Lagos Assembly condemns clamp down on media

The Lagos State House of Assembly has condemned the clamp down on the media by the military.

Mr. Moshood Oshun (Lagos Mainland 2) raised the matter at plenary on Monday under Matters of Urgent Public Importance.

He said the seizure of newspapers, beating up and detaining of newspaper vendors and circulation officers were meant to kill the press.

Oshun said such was the norm under military regimes and should not be allowed in a democracy.

He said: “If the Federal Government felt bad about any report, it should go to a court of law rather than harass, beat up and detain newspaper vendors, who do not even know how reports in the newspapers were written. It is wrong for the government to seize newspaper copies at this material time in the country.”

The Speaker, Adeyemi Ikuforiji, said it was not possible to kill the press, adding that not even military regimes were able to do so.

Ikuforiji said: “If they do not allow the press to publish openly, they would go underground and publish. There is no way the Federal Government can kill the press. They should bring back our girls and fight Boko Haram instead of fighting the press.”

Mr. Rotimi Olowo (Shomolu 1) described the clamp down on the media as “an abuse of office by a democratic government”, saying the nation was not under military rule.

Olowo said: “The Federal Government should have gone to court if it felt offended. There is separation of powers in a democratic setting. We should write to the National Assembly to invite the Minister of Interior and the National Security Adviser on the matter.”

Mr. Segun Olulade (Epe 2) said terrorising the media was as bad as the activities of the Boko Haram sect, adding: “The seizure of newspapers and intimidation of pressmen is unwarranted and condemnable. It is a reckless action by the Federal Government. The National Assembly should rise and speak up against it. We should not go back to the era of clamping down on the media like the military regime.

Mudashiru Obasa (Agege 1) said the incident was similar to what obtained under the late General Sani Abacha’s rule.

He compared it to “what Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi is undergoing in the hands of the Federal Government” and the ban on Bring Back Our Girls protests by Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Commissioner Joseph Mbu, which was later reversed by the Inspector General of Police, Muhammed Abubakar.

Obasa said: “All these are plans towards the 2015 general elections. Military men who should be fighting Boko Haram are fighting the press. President Goodluck Jonathan wants to use this method to kill the press. If you kill the press, anything could happen. We should be vigilant against this administration.”
