Motherland launches reimagined airport arrival experience for travelers

Motherland has launched a reimagined airport arrival experience designed to transform how travelers enter Nigeria this December, making the journey home more seamless, efficient, and welcoming from the moment they land.

Rolling out across newly upgraded airport arrival terminals, the Motherland Airport Experience introduces a centralized arrival hub where travelers can complete essential services in one place, removing much of the friction that has traditionally defined the first hours back home.

At the center of the experience is First Bank, offering on-arrival banking services that allow travelers to open bank accounts, complete verification, and collect ATM cards immediately. This enables visitors to access funds, make payments, and move through the city with ease, without the need for repeat visits to bank branches.

The arrival hub also provides access to National Identification Number (NIN) registration and verification services, allowing returning Nigerians and diaspora visitors to complete key documentation requirements upon arrival.

In addition, Motherland has partnered with LAGRIDE to further streamline the arrival experience. Festival attendees and travelers who open a First Bank account at the airport will be eligible for a complimentary ride home, with rides covered up to ₦30,000, helping visitors move smoothly from the terminal into the city.

By integrating financial services, identity processing, and transportation into a single arrival touchpoint, Motherland is reimagining the welcome experience into Nigeria to reflect the needs of a global, modern Nigerian community.

“Coming home should not feel complicated,” the Motherland co-founders said. “The airport is the first point of contact with the country, and this experience was designed to make arrival smoother, more dignified, and more connected. We want people to land and immediately feel supported.”

The Motherland Airport Experience forms part of a broader effort to improve December travel and engagement, particularly for diaspora visitors arriving during peak season. With thousands of travelers expected to arrive through Lagos during Motherland week, the initiative aims to reduce congestion, streamline access to essential services, and create a more connected entry point into the country.

Through partnerships with First Bank, LAGRIDE, and key public-sector stakeholders, Motherland demonstrates how coordinated public-private collaboration can meaningfully improve the traveler experience while expanding access to critical services.

The Motherland Festival takes place December 18–20 in Lagos, bringing together culture, technology, investment, and celebration in a three-day series of experiences designed to reconnect people at home and across the diaspora.

Omah Lay, Layi Wasabi, Teniola Aladese, Seyi Vibez, The Cavemen, Odumodu Blvck, Qing Madi, Tunde Onakoya, and Olamide Olowe are among the leading voices across music, business, technology, and culture set to take the stage from December 18–20 at one of the most anticipated and innovative festivals Lagos has seen.

  • More Than a Festival: Why Motherland is a reunion

More Than a Festival: Why Motherland is a reunion

Motherland is not just another December festival. It is a reunion.

Every December, Nigeria becomes a meeting point for the world. Airports fill with familiar accents. Cities move faster. Friends, families, and long-lost connections find their way back to one another. December has quietly become our unofficial homecoming season.

Motherland was created inside that moment.

At its core, Motherland is a deliberate gathering designed to bring people at home and across the diaspora into one shared space. Not just to celebrate, but to reconnect with culture, with opportunity, and with each other in ways that last beyond the season.

For years, December has felt powerful but fragmented. Culture lives in one place. Business happens somewhere else. Investment conversations stay behind closed doors. People return home, but rarely step into a space that brings everything together with intention.

    Motherland exists to change that.

Culture is the heartbeat of the experience. Music, food, art, and fashion are not side attractions but living expressions of who we are. Alongside them sit commerce, innovation, and real opportunity. Attendees can discover emerging startups, meet established companies, explore investment pathways, and support Nigerian brands building for scale, all in the same environment where culture thrives.

This is where Motherland stands apart.

It brings worlds that rarely share the same room into one place. Creatives meet investors. Founders meet consumers. Policy conversations sit next to performances. The result is not just entertainment, but exchange.

Motherland is also a space for learning. It gathers leaders across technology, finance, media, policy, and the creative economy for conversations grounded in lived experience. These are not abstract panels, but real insights shaped by people actively building and influencing the future.

For the diaspora, Motherland offers more than a trip home. It provides context. A clearer understanding of how Nigeria is evolving, where opportunity exists, and how connection can extend beyond nostalgia.

For those at home, it opens doors to global networks, capital, and perspective. It reinforces a powerful idea: Nigeria is not only a place people leave, but a place people return to, invest in, and build from.

Motherland is not trying to be bigger than other December festivals. It is trying to be deeper.

It is a space where celebration meets intention. Where memory meets movement. Where home is not just remembered, but actively shaped.

This December, Motherland is not simply calling people back. It is bringing us together.

  • Motherland Beckons unfolds Destination Al Nejashi/Lalibela

The Tigray region of Ethiopia is fascinating for its rich history as well as the rugged terrain. It is the home to ancient kingdoms like the Axum and Yeha. It is also home to the first mosque in the world.

In the light of this, Motherland Beckons is unveiling to Nigerians and the world a holiday package for Nigerians and the people from all over the world to visit Al Negashi and Lalibella, the two holy sites in Ethiopia for Christians and Moslems.

The formal launch of Motherland Beckons Destination Al Nejashi and Lalibela was recently held at La Campagne Beach Resort, Ikegun, Lagos State.

Destination Al Nejashi and Lalibela, which is Motherland Beckons’ activation and otherwise known as East and West amalgamation through tourism and creative arts, is part of effort by the organization to bridge the gap between the different regions of Africa and the rest of the world.

The launch was attended by the founder of Motherland Beckons, Otunba Wanle Akinboboye, the Ethiopian Ambassador to Nigeria, Samia Zekaria Gutu, and the General Manager of Ethiopian Airlines, Nigeria, Solomon Begashaw, and other guests.

It was a colourful event which witnessed a mix of entertainment by Atunda Entertainment. Accompanied by the orchestra of Atunda Entertainment, the trio of Anu The Lady Ekwu, Olo Midan Bata and Ara (Thunder) gave a powerful and moving rendition of both Nigerian and Ethiopian national anthems which were well received by the audience.

Akinboboye talked about the concept of Destination Al Nejashi and Lalibela as he spoke extensively on the historical and economic derivatives of the project. He paid glowing tributes to the Ethiopia nation for standing against the divisive war of the colonialists by resisting every attempt at colonising it.

He said the symbolism of the war won by the Ethiopians and made reference to Al Nejashi which is a mountainous region and what it meant to the people playing on the symbolism and slogan of the people known as “Gara le Gara” or “Mountain to Mountain.”

Continuing, Akinboboye disclosed that ”the essence of our gathering this afternoon is to share from that strength and that conviction and vision that when we are together everything is possible. Not just the strength that you derive, but the platform that you create from it that will enable you create industry and develop your economy.

”There is so much that we can learn from each other and we can discover great things together as a people,” he said, adding that ”the continent of Africa will not know progress until we decide to come together.”

He insisted that ”we must create prosperity together and when we create prosperity ultimately we create unity.”

Therefore, the essence of the east and west amalgamation is to forge unity and release the creative potency that would enhance the economic growth of the people and development of the continent.

According him,” tourism and creative arts are where the economic salvation of the continent lies, saying that ”for over 30 years I have held the belief that tourism can create prosperity for us and for over 30 years, La Campagne Tropicana Beach Resort has created wealth and prosperity for its community.”

He revealed that ”it took a concerted plan and effort to remove from Africa its soul, which is its culture and it will take also a concerted effort and plan by us, Africans, to get it back.”

Destination Al Nejashi and Lalibela is to him part of the concerted effort and plan to regain the lost soul of Africa and implode its economy.

”We are gathered here today to begin the journey of the east and west amalgamation through tourism and creative arts because when we travel within our continent, we begin to build our economy and our creative forces will come to being,”he said.

According to him, the bridge building process would be in two parts with the first being the creation and promotion of tour packages to Al Nejashi and Lalibela, two great historical sites in Ethiopia, with each having their respective strong attractions for the people.

The tour packages would involve the long stretch of value chain in the travel business with Ethiopian holidays serving as the ground handlers, Ethiopian Airlines as the official carrier and Mountain  Ice  Consultancy, Travels and Tours Limited as the tour company, all working closely with Motherland Beckons to achieve the aim of the amalgamation.

The second part of the deal as revealed by Akinboboye is the building of La Campagne Mountain Resort Al Nejashi. The resort, which is soon to commence construction, he said, would be a themed resort that would utilise extensively the cultural materials of the people of Ethiopia and the region.

Ambassador Gutu amplified Akinboboye’s submission, giving credence to the amalgamation project which, according to her, is opening her country to the world even as she insisted that Ethiopia has a lot to offer to the world.

Given its historical and political antecedents, as a country that was never conquered by the colonialists, she said that Africans and the world have a lot to learn from the country, hence the country is teaming up with Motherland Beckons to promote two of its most revered locations.

The ambassador is elated about the prospect of the project as she promised visitors a swell and fun-filled time in the country, even as she disclosed effort at improving on its environment and creating the necessary infrastructure for tourism to thrive.

”Though we don’t have beaches, but we would use our Gara le Gara to entertain you,” she said joyfully, adding that ”we want to build synergy in Africa by working with Africans to build Africa.”

On the proposed resort, she expressed delight over it and the eagerness to see it come to fruition soonest.

”We are going to start with our brother Wanle Akinbobye as he is going to put up a place like this (reference to La Campagne Tropicana Beach Resort) in Ethiopia. We can’t wait for it to come to life because it is going to serve as a boost to developing our tourist attractions,” said Gutu.

On his part, Begashaw assured of a seamless travel as he said that ”we are here to partner and ensure that it works to the best interest of our tourists. We would do everything possible to make it work.”

  • Motherland Beckons takes on Destination Akosombo

MOTHERLAND Beckons has continued to build on its Continent Building Project as it has extended its influence in promoting and marketing the African continent to Ghana, specifically the northern district of the West African country. It has picked the famed Akosombo town as the next destination to be exposed to the world.

To this end, an all inclusive promotional tour package labelled Destination Akosombo Ghana (DAG) has been designed to draw traffic to this sleepy but richly endowed community in the south of Asuogyamna District in the Eastern Region of the country.

In a bid to entrench the new-found love for destination Ghana by exposing business travellers and tourists to other equally enriching and attractive regions of the country, the Ghanaian High Commissioner to Nigeria, William Azumah Awinador Kanyirige, approached the founder of Motherland Beckons, Otunba Wanle Akinboboye, seeking the deployment of his expertise and platform.

Besides holding discussions, the envoy and over five of his aides hosted Akinboboye and his team on tour of the various districts of the country, at the end of which Akosombo was chosen as the next destination to be promoted given its enduring and rich history, development, business opportunities and tourist attractions.

Motherland Beckons, which has the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, as grand patron, is designed primarily to serve as a link between the people of African descent in The Diaspora and Africa, their ancestral root. Over the years, it has succeeded in bringing thousands of the over 700 million people of African descent in The Diaspora to the continent through tours across the various countries and business investments besides various profitable and adventurous engagements.

Destination Akosombo Ghana is geared towards meeting the expectations by encouraging and creating a platform for Nigerians in particular and other Africans on the continent and in The Diaspora to travel to Ghana to explore its rich history, culture, tourism, businesses and people, among others.

To launch, a comprehensive tour package has been put together for October 22 with the following activities: Kamp Africa, a camp for children aged 5-17. The essence  of the camp is to inculcate African cultures, values and norms in children in an Africa-themed eco-friendly environment. Activities at the camp would include learning how to prepare African cuisine, tying head gear (gele), playing simple African instruments, African dance, experience simulated African wedding and naming ceremony, and tales by moonlight every night around the bonfire.

  • Ooni: Promoting tourism through Motherland Beckons

Nigerians in the Diaspora (NIDO) has opened its Motherland Beckons Office in Enuwa, Ile-Ife. This is the organization’s show of commitment to the efforts of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi’s efforts to develop the ancient town into a world-class tourism destination.

It would be recalled that the Ooni of Ife formally declared the ancient city a Tourism Zone last  February.  The formal opening of Motherland Beckons  Nigerians in Diaspora (NIDO) office at the Enuwa Palace was performed by the Ooni who is also the grand patron of Motherland Beckons, an organisation founded by Otunba Wanle Akinboboye which is dedicated to the promotion of Africa and enhancing linkage between the Diaspora and Africa.

On the occasion, Oba  Ogunwusi (Ojaja 11) spoke of his ennobling vision of uniting Nigerians in the Diaspora and responsibility towards them as he sees them as one of his primary consistencies in his grand design of fostering peace, unity and development in Nigeria as well as Africa.

The monarch also emphasised the significant role of the Diaspora in the development of the nation.

He said America was developed by immigrants from Europe and not the native Red Indians. Oba Ojaja 11 then used the occasion to express gratitude to the members of NIDO America for the warm reception and hospitality accorded him and his entourage during his visit to the USA in June.

He urged NIDO members not to relent in their efforts in contributing to national growth and development and showered royal blessings on them and stressed that the new NIDO office is for NIDO America, NIDO Europe, NIDO Africa and the Caribbean.

Motherland Beckons takes Africa to the world

AFRICAN arts takes centre stage as, come 2014, the world will be treated to the best of musical and performance theatrics from the continent in what has been termed its greatest exportation of cultural product.

The African International Music (AIM) Festival, otherwise known as ‘taking Africa to the world,’ makes its debut in the United Arab Emirate, Dubai. This latest effort from the stable of Motherland Beckons is designed to boost the tourism industry and economy of the continent, its management states.

The cultural musical fiesta, which is to be promoted as an iconic festival of the continent, will feature some of the best and scintillating musical performances ranging from music, dance, percussion, instrumentation to theatre by the 55 countries of the continent, including South Sudan, which is the newest addition to the list of growing African countries.

Speaking on this new project, the president of Motherland Beckons and Tourism Ambassador of the World Conference of Mayors, Otunba Wanle Akinboboye, said that AIM festival is not only to rekindle the world’s interest in the continent’s greatest export product – culture – which over the years has been threatened by colonial and imperialists tendencies.

”We believe that when we expose creative individuals and groups in Africa to the world that it would bring about economic empowerment and development to the people of Africa,” said Akinboboye.

  • Motherland Beckons adds annual music fiesta

Disclosing this to newsmen, the head of Motherland Beckons initiative and owner of La Campagne Tropicana Beach Resort, Ikegun, Lagos, Otunba Wanle Akinboboye, said the decision to add Easter and More is based on the success of the maiden edition event held recently in the resort in Ikegun.

The annual event would include music, rite of re-integration back to Africa for black-Americans and those in the Diaspora through rechristening.

The Easter and More will be a four-day package for guests of the Nigeria’s foremost holiday resort.

For the maiden edition recently held, a group of musicians, Club Noveau, from the United States of America (USA) were in attendance. Apart from the musical performance, the group passed a rite re-integration back to the Africa. They were given African names on the beach front by the Bale of Ikegun, Musiliu Habib Sanni.

Some of the members of Club Noveau spoke of their experiences in Nigeria. First to speak was Samuielle Prater: “They are new things entirely. You cannot described the performances. It is not anything funny; they are lively.” Jay King talked about their taste of African music: “The rhythm that I have listened to, the rhythm of Africa makes one to go back to some of my music that I have recorded before to add them.”

Akinboboye, who is also the CEO of Atunda Entertainment stated that Club Nouveau R&B-pop band was picked among the very many artistes considered for the Easter celebration because the group possesses one of the most memorable, distinctive music ever heard in popular music, with their hit song ‘Lean on me’.
