  • Mother’s Day: A Celebration in Million Times

A mother is someone who supports and motivates us throughout our life. Mothers can replace anybody in our life but nobody can replace our mother. She never expects anything from us except love.

A mother is a person in our life who gives us birth, who teaches us how to live this life, who enlightens us on the good and bad times. No matter how much we get successful in life, no other thing can give us peace as the  mother’s lap

No matter how hard we try, we cannot pay her debts in our entire life. She sacrifices many things for her children. She deserves to be honored. For honoring the mother, motherhood, maternal bonds and her influence in society, we celebrate Mother’s Day also known as Mothering Sunday every year. This is a global day usually celebrated on second Sunday of May every year in Nigeria except in some instances where people misconceived this day with the International Women’s Day in March.

The origins of this celebration date back to the Ancient Greek times, but the way which it is celebrated today began in America in 1908.

The ancient Greeks dedicated an annual spring festival to maternal goddesses, and ancient Romans also celebrated a spring festival called Hilaria which was for a mother goddess called Cybele.

Other stories say that this date was to honour mothers. A prayer service was also held in church for the Virgin Mary and children would bring gifts and flowers to pay tribute to their mothers.

This day had almost died out completely by the 19th century.

After this, in America the idea of an official celebration for all mothers came in 1872 from Julia Ward Howe, an activist, writer and poet.

She became famous for her Civil War song “Battle Hymn of the Republic” and suggested that June 2 should be annually celebrated as Mother’s Day and should be a day dedicated to peace.

Julia also delivered a passionate appeal to women in 1870 in Boston and urged them to rise against war, and she initiated a Mothers’ Peace Day service on the second Sunday in June and annually held the meeting for a couple of years.

The writer worked hard to have Mother’s Day declared as an official holiday, but it was later replaced by the holiday now celebrated in May in America.

Anna Jarvis is recognised as the woman who invented Mother’s Day in America after she held a memorial for her mother in West Virginia in 1908.

Having established a clear background of the celebration, there is a need to know its significance in the 21st century and understanding the actual essence of the celebration.

On this note, the writer bring to the knowledge of the reader the amazing ways to celebrate this great that can be best described as “A Celebration in Million Times”

The celebration of Mother’s Day is now done by people all over the world by presenting gifts to mother and every motherly figure. Today celebration of Mother’s Day is all about gifting flowers, cards, jewellery and visiting restaurants or giving a holiday surprise to mother.

These are the ways people choose to express their gratitude of making mother feel special on the Mother’s Day and to pay thanks to mother for all her contributions for shaping the society.

Today, the celebration of Mother’s Day is done in a way that pleases us and not the celebrants, our mothers. Many at times fail to understand the deep meaning of Mother’s Day and this leads them abusing the essence of the celebration.

However, you can best celebrate this day by recompensing the love of motherhood in your special way. It is a day you must sacrifice to stay with your mother and make her feel important. Don’t forget that your mother is the greatest asset that you can ever have and you must make do with this day to celebrate her unfailing love in your life.

In summary, every year, a theme is dedicated to the celebration of mother’s day. The theme of celebration of Mother’s Day 2018 is “There is nothing like the love of a mother”. Theme for the Mother’s Day in the year 2017 is “Every Mother knows”. The theme for the Mother’s Day in the year 2016 was “Hands of the Mother”.

The writer wishes to dedicate this piece to all mothers who have lost their lives to the ongoing killings across the federation and also to all mothers in the world at large.

  • Mother’s Day: Cleric calls for increased sensitisation on safe motherhood

A cleric, Rev. Fr. Damian Alozie, has called on governments at all levels to increase sensitisation to breast feeding, maternity and population growth, especially for the rural women.

Alozie, who the Parish Priest, Sacred Heart Catholic Church Odogunyan, Ikorodu, Lagos, made the call in an interview with the our reporters on Sunday in Lagos.

“Today is auspicious for our governments to do more for the rural women by way of mass communication and education on everything about good parenting, child spacing and on how to control our population.’’

“Nigeria still needs to do more in the area of maternity and child upbringing because many of the societal malaise we are experiencing today are rooted in poor motherhood.

“Even challenges to good governance are as a result of the roles mothers and wives play at home,’’ the cleric said.

Alozie also urged wives of political leaders at all levels of government to play advisory role to their husbands and offer constructive criticisms to them to enhance good governance.

  • Still celebrating Mother’s Day

    Still celebrating Mother’s Day

“orisa bi iya kosi” the yorubas would say, meaning “there is none like a mother”. A mother is the whisper of leaves as you walk down the streets, she is the smell of certain foods you remember, flowers you pick and the fragrance of life itself. She is the cool hand on your brow when you’re not feeling well, she’s the sound of the rain that lulls you to sleep and the colours of a rainbow you see on the sky. A mother lives inside your laughter, she is the place you came from, your first home and the map you follow with every step you take. She is your first love, your first friend and even your first enemy and nothing on earth can separate you from your mother; not time, not space and not even death. Why then shouldn’t they be celebrated?

World mother’s day is an international day set aside for the commemoration of mothers and their virtuous deeds in the home, community and society at large. The love of a mother is undeniably the strongest emotion in the human soul and being a mother is undoubtedly a hard task because if it were easy, then fathers would do it but mothers are just like demi-gods; empowered with the strength to make impossibilities seem possible. Believers in Islam are of a belief that the paradise of a person lies beneath the mother’s feet thereby emphasizing the importance of a mother.

I am very much in agreement with Rudyard Kipling who said “God could not be everywhere and therefore he made mothers”. Mothers are the sweetest gift from God to us. Like nurses, they take care of what hurts; like a map, they help us find our way; like a shepherd, they save the day; like a library, they educate us and provide knowledge; like a therapist, they always listen; like a tissue, they dry our tears and like no one else, they love us.

It is every little girls dream to be a mother and every guy wishes to have a wife with the qualities of a good mother because a mother can readily play a lot of roles and fit into a sundry of places, howbeit, her place can never be replaced by anyone. A mother understands what a child does not say, “she is aMazing, lOving, sTrong, Happy, sElfless, and gRaceful.”

Therefore, a mother should be celebrated and honoured every single day because mothers are not rare to find but a good mother is the major condiment for a happy and successful home, community, and overall, the nation.

  • International Mothers Day: Celebrating mothers

    International Mothers Day: Celebrating mothers

“Who sat and watch my infant head, when sleeping on my cradle bed, and tears and sweet affection shed, my mother; When pains and sickness makes me cry, who gaze upon my heavy eyes, when pain is much that I should die, MY MOTHER.”

This popular rhyme is one a lot of us can relate with, especially one that we sang with so much emotion for our mothers when we were yay high. It lays credence to the dedication, care, and even pains that a mother goes through all because of her child. A classic soul song by the legendary Asa goes like this, “nitori omo, o jiya nile oko…”; meaning “…because of her child, a mother suffers and stays in her husband’s house”.

The dream of every girl is to transit conveniently from a single lady to being a mother with children. However, this enviable dream is one that comes with its own challenges and personal sacrifice. Without these responsibilities, the toga of “mother” becomes a mere nomenclature with no substance.

Today we celebrate all the virtuous women in this teraqueous globe we call earth; women that would literally starve themselves just to feed their children, women that would garb themselves in cheap apparels just to ensure that their children are dressed in the best of clothing; women that would engage in businesses and petty trades to afford decent meals for their family. In fact, apart from being a mother, she assumes the role of chef, stylist, disciplinarian, doctor, fashion designer, teacher, etc., to her family.

According to Bala an undergraduate of Kogi state university, “my mother is a perfect example of a virtuous woman. She is a great disciplinarian, who does not spoil the child by sparing the rod. She gives out a healthy blend of the carrot and stick. Since my father’s demise, she has been the breadwinner for I and my siblings.”

Tijesunimi, a student of Computer Science, Yaba College of Technology, “My role model is my mom; I know that she is flawed with her personal foibles, however, I love her perfect imperfections. Being a single mother with so many burdens on her shoulders with little funds to get by each day, she somehow finds a way to ensure that education for me remains a priority. As a family, we have had our share of ups and downs, however, somehow with God and her dogged spirit, we scaled through,”

Taking a cue from the inspiring story of Olajumoke “the bread seller” whose meteoric rise to fame and stardom became the buzzword on the street, we see the latent story of a mother hustling to make ends meet in order to cater for her child. In the process, she serendipitously met with good luck. At the time, she was not well-educated, howbeit, she made conscious efforts to see that her children get an education.

As we come to the crux of this article, it is important that we stress the fact that the girl child should be treated with respect, kindness, and equity because the little girl of yesterday will someday become a wife and mother. Therefore, she should be protected and valued; even in times when she seeming go rusty, we should polish her until she gleams like new; she becomes special because we made her so.

Finally, it is pertinent we realize that “behind every successful and peaceful home, community, and nation is a virtuous mother”.  With confidence I can proudly say that the loveliest master piece of God’s creation is the heart of a mother.

    God bless Nigeria!

  • My Mum, my heart

    My Mum, my heart

There are women everywhere, but mothers are rare to find. Mothers are a bundle of emotions that sometimes defy reason. A mother is the best friend anyone could ever ask for. When everyone else turns away, she will always turn towards you. When you fall, she’s the one that helps you up and when your heart is filled with despair, she’s the one that gives you a glimpse of hope.

At a time when society urges women to seek their worth and personal fulfilment in things that take them away from their families, real mothers stick to their children. My mum has been there from my first breath to my first broken heart. She sees right through me and always knows what’s wrong. Then reassures everything will be alright even when she doesn’t know what went wrong.

One thing we always forget to do is tell our mothers how thankful we are for everything. On Mothers’ Day, the world sets aside one day to do what we should do every single day; tell our mums that we love them and that that will never change.

Thank you mum for teaching me how to read even before I got into school. Thank you for being always proud of me when I read to people so early in age and they marvel. Thank you for your heartache and worries to watch me disappear down the street, walking to school alone for the very first time.

    9. ABACHAThank you for crying silently when I seemed to have gone astray. Thank you for bringing me back to my senses through your love and understanding. Thank you for staying awake all night whenever I fell sick and constantly uttering those compassionate and reassuring words, “Mommy’s here.”

Thank you for making me who I am today. You were there for my first breath, I promise to be there for your last, and we will be together for everything in between.

  • Mother’s Day: Cleric advise mothers to train their children properly

Emmanuel Adeniyi of the Banner of
    Christ Church, Adegbayi-Ibadan, has
advised mothers to bring up their
children in proper way to check decay
in moral values of the society.
Adeniyi made the advice on Sunday in
his sermon in Ibadan to mark the 2017
    Mother’s Day.
According to him, the decay in moral
values among some children in the
society is as a result of improper
    upbringing.
He said that mothers had great roles to
play if a nation must ensure crime-free
society, adding that children looked up
to their mothers at early stage of their
    life.
“Mothers are the first mentors and
children look up to; therefore, mothers
    should play their role responsibly.
“Instil moral values in the children; let
them know that crime is evil and that
    hard work, perseverance and prayer
will lead someone to greatness,” he
    said.
Adeniyi also called on husbands to give
    necessary support to their wives,
adding that husbands that used to
    maltreat their wives should desist,
    because the children were watching.
He further urged people to take care of
    their aged parents, especially mothers,
rather than waiting till their demise “to
    celebrate mothers in death”.
“Some children do waste money in
burying their late mothers instead of
caring for them when alive,” he said.
    The cleric later congratulated mothers
and female folks in general for
    witnessing another Mother’s Day in
    2017.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)
reports that Mother’s Day is celebrated
on the fourth Sunday of Lent annually.
It is a day set aside to appreciate and
    celebrate mothers for helping husbands
in building good, peaceful and healthy
    home.
The day is also marked with gifts such
as flowers, cards and other presents by
    children to their mothers in
    appreciation of the maternal bond
    between child and mother.
