    Two killed as tanker collides with motorcycle in Lagos

    Tragedy struck at Pokia Junction, inward Araga, along the Epe–Ijebu Road, Epe, Lagos, on Wednesday as an empty Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) tanker collided with a commercial motorcycle, resulting in the deaths of the rider and his passenger.

    The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the incident, stating that the tanker driver has been arrested and is currently in police custody.

    According to the agency spokesperson, Adebayo Taofiq, preliminary investigations revealed that the motorcyclist, carrying a male passenger, was riding against traffic on a prohibited one-way route when the tanker, reportedly moving at high speed, collided with the motorcycle.

    The violent impact proved fatal, resulting in the instantaneous death of both the rider and the passenger.

    LASTMA operatives responded promptly, securing the scene, cordoning off the area to prevent secondary accidents, and notifying relevant authorities, including the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

    The tanker was later removed to restore traffic flow, and the remains of the deceased, along with the tanker driver, were handed over to the Noforija Police Division for further investigation.

    The Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, described the incident as a “sorrowful reminder of the deadly consequences of traffic violations.”

    He urged commercial motorcyclists and all road users to strictly adhere to traffic regulations, warning against dangerous practices such as riding against one-way traffic and competing recklessly with larger vehicles.

    “This unfortunate loss of lives was entirely avoidable. Had the motorcyclist remained within his lawful lane and observed a moderate speed, this fatal incident would not have occurred,” Giwa stated.

    He further reiterated the Lagos State Government’s commitment to enforcing traffic regulations and protecting lives on the roads.

    LASTMA urged all motorists to view traffic laws as life-saving measures rather than punitive rules, emphasizing that compliance is essential for safety and orderly movement on Lagos roads.

    Man strangles father to death for not buying him motorcycle

    A 32 Year-Old man, Sunday Abilewa, has killed his 68 years old father, Abu Abilewa, for refusing to buy him a motorcycle.

    Sunday was said to have committed the offence at about 5 pm at Eberi Quarters, Isua Akoko, Ondo State.

    He was arrested and subsequently arraigned before a Magistrate court on a one count charge of murder.

    The Prosecutor, Inspector Abdulateef Suleiman, told the court that Sunday committed the offence on December 31, 2024.

    According to him, “the defendant allegedly approached the deceased to buy him a new motorcycle, but the deceased refused. It led to an argument, and in the process, the defendant grabbed the neck of his father, which resulted in his death.

    “Efforts of the defendant’s mother to rescue the deceased proved abortive as the defendant was under the influence of hard drugs.”

    The offence, according to him, contravened Section 316 and punishable under Section 319 of the Criminal Code Cap 37, Vol.II, Laws of Ondo State, 2006.

    Presiding Magistrate, Mrs F.A. Akinboboye, did not take the plea of the defendant.

    She ordered him remanded at the Olokota Correctional Centre pending legal advice from the Department of Public Prosecutions.

    The case was adjourned to February 25, 2025, for men

    Motorcycle dealers count losses after Sokoto Central Market fire

    Motorcycle dealers in Sokoto Central Market are lamenting their loss following the fire which gutted their section of the market.

    The fire reportedly started in the early hours of Monday. Its genesis could not be ascertained as at last night, but sources said it started from a solid waste dump. No life was lost.

    Chairman of the Motorcycles Marketers Association in the market, Garba Mohammed said the number of motorcycles destroyed could not be ascertained.

    “We cannot specify the actual number destroyed in the fire because the fire started about 6am when many traders were still at home, so they could not salvage anything.

    “Men of the federal and state fire service are still battling to put off the fire which might take some time. We thus appeal to the government to assist those who lost their property to the inferno,” he said.

    Motorcycle thief killed by mob in Bida

    A motorcycle thief has been killed by an angry mob in Bida as he attempted to steal a motorcycle from its owner.

    A motorcycle thief met a tragic end after being lynched by an angry mob for stealing a motorcycle.

    The unfortunate incident transpired around 11:30 p.m. near Sokogie Hospital, situated in the vicinity of the small gate area of the Federal Polytechnic, Bida.

    The thief, whose identity remains undisclosed, had tried to snatch a motorcycle by hitting the rider on the head before he was caught by people who were attracted by the shout of the motorcycle rider.

    The mob, fueled by anger and a desire for justice, took matters into their own hands and beat the thief continuously which ultimately led to the thief’s death.

    He was dead before security operatives arrived at the scene of the incident.

    The Nation learned that the deceased thief had recently tied the knot with his wife, who is currently heavily pregnant.

    It was also learned that the deceased thief also held the position of a manager at a Pure Water Factory within Bida town.

    As part of his 100 days in office, the Member representing Bungudu/Maru Federal Constituency at the Federal House of Representatives, Zamfara State, Hon Abdulmalik Zubairu Zannan has presented 500 motorcycles, over 500 sewing machines and 100 vehicles to his constituents.

    This gesture was borne out of his desire for his constituents to be gainfully employed in economic activities to earn money as part of efforts to make life easy for them.

    Hon Zubairu in the same vein also invested massively in the healthcare services in his constituency through the renovation of four medical centres and laying foundation for the construction of 100 bed international standard hospital.

    This move according to the Honorable member will make access to medical services seamless and afford for his constituents which was part of the promises he made to them during the electioneering.

    Furthermore, as part of the efforts to cushion the effects of fuel subsidy removal, Honorable Zubairu presented bags of grains and other assorted food items to his constituents.

    He said the idea to present food stuff as palliatives to his constituents was conceived following the high cost of food in the market due to the economic challenges.

    During the presentation of the palliatives and items, the Reps Member charged the beneficiaries to make good use of the vehicles, sewing machines and vehicles to create wealth.

    He assured his constituents of better days ahead as he plans to embark on some people-oriented projects aimed at bettering the lives of the constituents.

    While expressing joy over the gesture of the Reps Member, the constituents who trooped out en masse, said they are reaping the fruit of voting the right person to represent them.

    One of the beneficiaries, Adamu Musa said with the motorcycle, he will be gainfully employed to feed his family. While praying for Honourable Zubairu, Musa said the constituency will continue to support him in his political ambition.

    Another beneficiary, Amina Yusuf who was given a sewing machine could not hold her joy as she shed tears as she spoke with journalists.

    Yusuf who is a mother of six and widow said she has been toiling to feed her family since her husband died five years ago.

    “My husband died five years ago, I have been suffering with my children, the economic problem is too much on me, but as I have received this sewing machine, I will use it to feed my family.

    “I learnt how to sew clothes two years ago, but I don’t have money to buy the machine to start my own business. I thank Honourable Zubairu for removing poverty from my family”, she added.

  • Lagos battles motorcycle services firms over revenue

    Lagos State has seen a spike in the motorcycle-hailing services. This new business trend sprouting across the state is coming as a safe and more reliable alternative to regular motorcycles,  but the parameters are contributing next to nothing to the state’s coffers, writes Robert Egbe.

    The Lagos State economy is a giant one. It boasts as one of the few self-sufficient states in the country and its success has continued to set it apart as the benchmark for the others. Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), mainly through taxes stood at $1.3 billion (N258.7billion) in 2015 — three times more than the state with the second most IGR and 39% of the total IGR by Nigeria’s 36 states.

    According to the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics, the country’s commercial hub generated a staggering N382 billion in 2018. The figure surpassed the earnings of a combination of 29 states! But Lagos’ success looks even better compared to other African nations. With GDP in 2014 pegged at $90 billion, Lagos’ economy stands as the 7th largest in Africa- bigger than Cote d’Ivoire and Kenya, two of the continent’s most promising economies.

    A finely tuned IGR model and a growing economy have made Lagos into Africa’s leading city and one of the world’s fastest growing megacities. Lagos, like most other states, relies so much on its IGR to function. The provision of basic services and amenities like hospitals, schools, roads and other infrastructure is funded by the revenue it generates. It is important to note that governments all over the world are consistently under pressure to increase revenue through taxation in order to provide better services within their jurisdiction. In view of this, significant sources of revenue such as taxes, licenses, fines and fees, grants, financial aids, and loans must always be keenly paid attention to for any economy to thrive.

    Lagos being a hotbed for enterprise relies heavily on taxes in generating revenue. Small scale firms and the large institutions contribute a significant chunk to the coffers of the state in the form of taxes. In maintaining its enviable feat of raking in whopping sums as its revenue, especially in the area of taxes, it ensures that it drags all the businesses operating in the state under its tax net.

    Despite its effort to generate funds and several awareness initiatives aimed at making organisations interested in the payment of taxes, some firms that operate fully in Lagos sabotage the economic drive of the Lagos State Government in its effort to increase revenue by brazenly cutting corners.

    Recently, Lagos State has seen a spike in the motorcycle-hailing services. This new business trend sprouting across the state is coming as a safe and more reliable alternative to regular motorcycles. Their primary purpose is to help Lagos residents zap through congested traffic.

    However, it is interesting that a large number of companies in this technology-driven business have their motorcycles registered with the Ogun State Government with their number plates bearing that of the gateway state, despite functioning fully in Lagos.

    Leading the pack of motorcycles in this category is the Chinese-owned ORide. ORide, a subsidiary of OPay, which started operating in Lagos in May 2019. There is also the U-Go services and Max.Ng – both of which are bike-hailing companies operating in Nigeria’s most populous city.

    Getting a motorcycle registered in Lagos is almost the same process as that of a car or any other motor vehicle. There are processes that must be followed for two-wheelers to be approved for use in Lagos. Letters must be written, taken through the right desks, duly signed and approved and the appropriate documents received.

    Their conspicuous use of the neighboring state’s number plates while operating in Lagos draws curiosity. The move may be attributed to the companies’ disregard for due process or attempting to bypass the system by reducing its remittances to the coffers of the government hence the reason behind it running to the neighbouring state to register its vehicles.

    According to investigations, the riders of the motorcycles of the trio of ORide, U-Go Services and MaxOkada have been serially harassed by men of the Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS) and the reason may not be far-fetched. The motorcycle-hailing companies, like all others, operate fully in Lagos. Their customers are Lagos residents who live and also work in Lagos. Therefore, registering with another state ultimately means that funds that would have ordinarily accrued to the state are being contributed to the economy of another state.

    Many might argue that using a plate number different from the state’s in which you operate does not violate any law. However, the angle in which business minds analyze these cases speak to economic sabotage and the argument is simple – the motorcycle-hailing companies are headquartered in Lagos and have their operations exclusively in the state. Its customers are Lagos residents who live, work and also pay taxes in Lagos. It generates the revenue with which it pays its staff from the state, yet, they dole out funds for the renewal of the particulars of its numerous motorcycles to a neighbouring state.

    It is also imperative to note that when registering a motorcycle for commercial purposes in any state, the two-wheelers taxis are expected procure hackney permits and other regulatory permits that are subject to periodic renewals in the state. This process helps the State Government regulate the sector whilst generating the needed revenues to run the state.

    A former Commissioner for Finance in the state, Mr. Akinyemi Ashade, had last year expressed optimism that the monthly IGR would rise as the state continued to implement its reforms, adding that the target was to grow the IGR to N50 billion from N34 billion. “The target we set for ourselves is N50 billion; we know it is a marathon, we will win some and we will lose some, but we are committed towards ensuring that we meet the target,” Ashade said.

    However, when businesses such as ORide, U-Go Services and Max.Ng deliberately avoid walking into the revenue net of the state, perhaps the N50 billion target would easily be a mirage and the social benefits to the over 20 million of people who call the state home will be shortchanged eventually.

    Will gokada and easy mobility also become guilty of this? Only time can tell.

  • Motorcycle association welcomes restriction, laments killing of members

    National Association of commercial motorcycle and tricycle owners and riders association has applauded the imposition of curfew on motorcycles and tricycles in Zamfara State, considering the escalating security situation in the state where its members are made to be the scapegoats.

    “We have been receiving reports of our members being killed, machete or doped while their motorcycles carted away, especially in the night hours,  but with the curfew on motorcycles and tricycles in place, the reports are no more there.”

    Zamfara State chairman of the association, Usman Muhammad Haido, disclosed this to The Nation while reacting to imposition of restriction of motorcycle and tricycle from 7PM to 6AM in the state.

    Haido explained that when security threat is rampant, drastic measures that may not augur well to many people have to be taken to arrest the situation.

    He revealed that they had wanted the curfew hours to be reduced from 9PM to 6AM but considering the situation at hand, it has changed their demand after their meeting with the state Commissioner of Police Thursday.

    “We have also told the police that if any of our member is caught violating the law,  he should face the full wrath of the law as we cannot go to ask for his bail and if they arrest anybody without ID Card, then he is not our member, “ Haido said

    He revealed that restrictions of the movements of motorcycles in Zamfara State have been existence for years.

    According to him it is only when security threat becomes low that the law is relaxed saying that the law should have not been imposed on all the local governments but that also becomes necessary in order to fully control the situation.

  • Trader held for ‘stealing’ motorcycle

    An Ikeja Magistrates Court yesterday remanded a 26-year-old trader, Musa Mathias, in Kirikiri Prisons for alleged theft of a motorcycle.

    Magistrate A. I. Abina ordered that the defendant be remanded in prison until Monday.

    Mathias, who lives at 5, Jinadu Street, Agege is facing a one-count of stealing contrary to Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    Prosecuting Sergeant Ishola Samuel said the defendant committed the offence on May 3 at 152, Dopemu Road, Agege, Lagos.

    Samuel said the defendant sneaked into the house at night and stole a motorcycle.

    He alleged that the defendant stole a motorcycle marked LAR 494 QC valued at N85,000 belonging to the complainant, Mr Philip Adaji. The machine was parked in the complaint’s compound.

    According to him, Mathias was apprehended by members of a vigilance group.

  • Man, docked over alleged motorcycle theft

    A 45-year-old man, Olutan Adekunle, who allegedly stole a motorcycle valued at N230,000, was on Wednesday charged before an Ota Magistrates’ Court in Ogun.

    Adekunle, who lives at No. 26 Owolabi St., Iyana-Iyesi, Ota, is facing a two-count charge bordering on stealing.

    The prosecutor, Sgt. Chudu Gbesi, told the court that the accused committed the offences on Jan.5 at about 12.45.p.m.at No. 5, Holy Ghost Avenue, Iloye, Ota.

    Gbesi said the accused collected the motorcycle on credit from one Babatunde Oluwaseun, and promised that he would pay him N7, 000 weekly, an agreement he did not fulfill.

    “All efforts made by the complainant to get his money or the motorcycle proved abortive,’’ he said.

    The offences contravened Sections 383(1) and 390(9) of the Criminal Law of Ogun, 2006.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    The Senior Magistrate, Mr S. O. Banwo, granted the accused bail in the sum of N200, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    He said the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and should be gainfully employed.

    Banwo said the sureties should show evidence of tax payment to Ogun Government.

    The case was adjourned till March 16 for hearing. (NAN)

    FG won’t ban Okada – Amaechi

    The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi  has  said that the federal government will not ban use of Motorcycle ‘Okada’  and Tricycle as alternative means of transportation across the country.

    The minister explained that banning the operators will lead to huge loss of jobs and will also affect the economy.

    Ameachi also noted that there was need to establish rules and regulations that will guide the operators instead of placing a ban on the operators.

    The minister said this in Abuja ON Tuesday  at the 2017 National Day of  Amalgamated Commercial Tricycle and Motocycle Owners Repairs and Riders Association of Nigeria, (ACOMORAN).

    He said: “We will not ban operators of motorcycles and tricycles because we acknowledge the role you play nationally.

    “Transportation is about logistics because we need to move people from one place to another and by so doing, create jobs and opportunities.

    “We use trains and buses but we need to move people from their homes to the stations and that is where you come in. You contribute immensely to the economy and make transportation easily.

    “Basically, you know that they are used for agricultural purposes too because farm produce are transported from one place to another.

    The minister also promised to collaborate with the Central Bank of Nigeria, commercial banks and other important institutions to ensure that the association and its members get soft loan to assist their work.
