    Motorcyclist kills LASTMA man

A motorcyclist has killed a Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) official, Prince Sunday Segun Shenuga, on line of duty.

The late Shenuga otherwise called SS was knocked down on the Third Mainland Bridge while trying to assist a man whose vehicle broke down.

The motorcyclist also suffered arm fracture.

He is at Gbagada General Hospital.

Shenuga, who rode a LASTMA motorcycle, was rushed to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja where he died.

According to a LASTMA official, the late Shenuga was flagged down by the distressed motorist.

“He parked, removed his helmet and was trying to assist when a motorcyclist hit him. He was rushed to LASUTH and died the following day,” he said.

The late Shenuga, The Nation learnt, was among officers that give situation report to the Traffic Radio Control Room, Alausa, Ikeja.

LASTMA General Manager (GM), Bashir Braimah described the incident as sad, adding that the late Shenuga’s remains had been buried.

LASTMA, Braimah said, footed the hospital and funeral bills.

On whether the authority will press charges against the motorcyclist, he said: “That is left for the police to handle.”

Braimah appealed to motorists to see LASTMA officials as fellow human beings.

“They are family men and women like all other Lagosians. They have wife and children just like everybody; they have relations and most especially are your neighbours. So, why do people think of attacking them for trying to make life easier for the populace? They are always out there in the rain and under sun to keep traffic moving. Attacking them shouldn’t be contemplated at all,” he said.

The GM assured his men that their welfare is paramount, urging them to see Shenuga’s case as an act of God.

  • Trailer crushes motorcyclist to death in Ibadan

A commercial motorcycle rider was  crushed to death by a trailer at Iwo Road Roundabout in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital yesterday, a day to his child’s christening.

An eyewitness said the motorcyclist, whose name was simply given as Kehinde, was pushed by a taxi driver , who was being pursued by Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIOs) into the path of the in-coming trailer.

He said: “The motorcyclist was on the right side of the road close to the  bridge and had nothing to do with the VIOs. But there was a taxi being pursued by the VIOs, on the second lane (middle lane).

“In an attempt to dodge the inspection team, the taxi bashed the motorcyclist. The female passenger successfully jumped off the bike with minor injuries. The trailer crushed the motorcyclist.

“The trailer driver was unaware of the accident, so he just continued his journey.”

The source said the VIOs sped off immediately after the accident, instead of pursuing the trailer.

Another witness, however, alleged that the VIOs were pursuing the motorcyclist and in the process he was pushed in the path of the on-coming trailer.

After the accident, his colleagues stormed the Ikolaba VIO office but were denied entry by the police. Some of them were arrested.

It was gathered that his wife fainted when the news of his death got to her.

Kehinde’s remains have been deposited at the Adeoyo State Hospital morgue at Yemetu, Ibadan.

  • Civil Defence officials ‘kill’ commercial motorcyclist

    •Police: we’re investigating his death

Officials of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have allegedly killed a commercial motorcyclist, Mr. Michael Ogunrinde, in Ado-Ekiti.

The state Chairman of the Association of Commercial Motorcycle Riders, Mr. Ademo Olu-Martins, said Ogunrinde, 50, popularly called Newman by his colleagues, followed other officials of the association to the headquarters of the Corps on Afao Road, Ado-Ekiti where they were allegedly attacked and beaten up by NSCDC officials.

He said Ogunrinde died last Friday morning from the injuries he allegedly sustained during the attack.

His remains have reportedly been deposited at the mortuary of the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH).

Mr. Olu-Martins recalled that members of the association had gone to the NSCDC headquarters to make clarifications in respect of the death, last Thursday morning, of an official of the NSCDC.

He said the official was killed by a vehicle, which hit the motorcycle he boarded from behind when he was heading for the NSCDC headquarters.

Said He: “We went to their office on Afao Road to secure the release of our members, whom they arrested and took to their office. We also wanted to explain that their officer called Taiwo Adesuyi died when the okada conveying him to their headquarters was hit from behind by a vehicle and that none of our members was responsible for the accident.

“Our move turned out to be a mistake. Instead of reasoning with us, they attacked us with dangerous objects. We were taken unawares.

“One of us, Ogunrinde, who is lying there (pointing to the deceased), sustained injuries in the head. He died early this morning. Two others are in the hospital receiving treatments. Their condition has improved.”

The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Sotonye Wakama, who confirmed the death, said an autopsy has not been carried out to ascertain its cause.

He added: “We are aware of the death, but we have not come to a conclusion regarding its cause. We know there was a fracas during which someone sustained injuries.

“We are not sure that the okada rider died from the injuries sustained or that the death was a result of other factors. An autopsy would have to be conducted to ascertain the cause of his death. Until the conclusion of investigation, we cannot speak on the cause of his death.”
