Mourinho targets Bayern job amid Tuchel uncertainty

Jose Mourinho is reportedly interested in replacing Thomas Tuchel as Bayern Munich manager.

The 61-year-old is currently out of work after being sacked by Roma last month, bringing his two-and-a-half years reign with the Serie A club to an end.

Mourinho was recently linked with a potential return to the Premier League, with one report claiming that the Portuguese has ‘unfinished business’ at Manchester United.

A possible move to Barcelona, who will have head coach Xavi stepping down at the end of the season, has also been mooted, but German news outlet Bild claims that Mourinho is keen to take over at Bayern Munich.

Mourinho has spent 24 years in management but he is yet to test himself in the Bundesliga, and journalist Christian Falk has revealed that the two-time Champions League winners is “learning German”.

Speaking on BILD SPORT, Falk said: “I heard he’s learning German. He has flirted with the office in the past. He would be ready.”

Mourinho’s alleged interest in the Bayern hotseat comes at a time when current boss Tuchel has come under increased pressure as his side have fallen behind in the Bundesliga title race.

The Bavarian giants were comprehensively beaten 3-0 by leaders Bayer Leverkusen last weekend and have subsequently slipped five points behind Xabi Alonso’s side in the top-flight standings.

Tuchel surprisingly used a three-man defence for the first time this season, a decision which ultimately backfired, while Matthijs de Ligt was allegedly left ‘angry’ by the 50-year-old’s choice to leave him on the substitutes’ bench.

Although supporter unrest is growing at the Allianz Arena, Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen has played down suggestions that Tuchel’s job is at risk, telling Bild: “Nothing changes. We knew beforehand that it would be a difficult game. We would have liked a different result. We are concentrating on the next games.

“I don’t like to repeat myself (about Tuchel’s future), it remains as I just said.”

Mourinho would bring a wealth of experience at the highest level and a winning mentality should he take the reins at a club like Bayern, having previously won silverware in Portugal, England, Italy and Spain.

The two-time UEFA Coach of the Year has won a total of 26 trophies with six different clubs, most recently celebrating Europa Conference League glory with Roma in 2021-22.

Mourinho set for Osimhen’s Napoli talks after Roma exit

Jose Mourinho does not want to leave Serie A following his sacking from Roma and will meet with Napoli next week.

The 60-year-old Portuguese coach was dismissed by the Giallorossi in the days following their 3-1 defeat to Milan, a result that left the club ninth in the league table after 20 matches. He was replaced by Daniele De Rossi, who secured a victory over Hellas Verona in his debut game.

Mourino’s sacking has not gone down well with Roma fans, who have started leaving posters thanking the coach around the streets of the Italian capital. Multiple banners supporting the coach were also seen in the stands of the Stadio Olimpico during the win over Verona.

As reported by The Sunday Times, Mourinho wants to continue working in Italy and will meet with Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis next week to discuss an immediate return to the dugout. His agent Jorge Mendes opened talks with the Partenopei in the days following his dismissal from Roma.

The Portuguese coach is also being heavily courted by Saudi side Al-Shabab, but his priority is to stay in Europe for the time being. In the coming days, he’s expected to be present at some Serie A matches to publicly show his desire to stay in the league.

Mourinho ‘agrees’ verbally with new club

Jose Mourinho is reportedly set to make a quick return to management, just days after being sacked by Roma.

Mourinho was dismissed by the Serie A club earlier this week, leaving the 2021 Conference League winners ninth in the table following a two-and-a-half-year spell at the Stadio Olimpico.

The former Chelsea boss was seen leaving the training ground in tears while many fans have questioned Roma’s decision to sack him given his strong relationship with the supporters. Club legend Daniele De Rossi has taken over in the meantime.

But Mourinho isn’t going to be out of the game for long according to reports in Saudi Arabia, who claim that he is poised to take over as manager of Al Shabab.

During his time in Italy, Mourinho often spoke about the prospect of managing in the Middle East and even revealed he had rejected the “biggest and craziest offer a coach has ever received” to remain with Roma.

Mourinho laments Roma’s poor start in Serie A

Jose Mourinho says he is enduring the worst start to a season of his coaching career after Roma’s defeat by Genoa. The 4-1 loss was Roma’s third in six league games and left the club 16th in Serie A with five points.

Mourinho has previously managed Porto, Chelsea, Real Madrid, Inter Milan, Manchester United and Tottenham and took over at Roma in 2021.

He won the inaugural Europa Conference League in 2022 as he led the Italian club to a first trophy in 14 years.

Roma finished sixth in Serie A last season and were runners-up in the Europa League, losing on penalties against Sevilla in the final.

As Mourinho soaked up the disappointment of the Genoa result, the 60-year-old said: “It’s also my worst start to a season as a coach.

“However, I don’t think that Roma had ever appeared in two consecutive European finals [before last season].”

Genoa took the lead through Albert Gudmundsson before Bryan Cristante levelled for Roma.

However, Mateo Retegui, Morten Thorsby and Junior Messias scored second-half goals for Genoa to leave Roma hovering above the Serie A relegation zone.

Roma’s only league win this season came with a 7-0 victory against Empoli, while they also beat Sheriff Tiraspol in a Europa League group game.

Their next match will be tomorrow  at home to Frosinone.

“This is the squad we have, for better and worse. We have to move forward – there’s no time to lament,” said Mourinho on Thursday evening.

“I might show my feelings behind the scenes because it really affects me emotionally, especially given my relationship with the fans.

“We’ll be working hard from tomorrow ahead of our next game. Three points will be at stake – it’s not like we’re in six-pointer territory already – but it’s a huge game for us now.”

  • Pogba praises Solskjaer for revitalising Man Utd’s attack

Manchester United have rediscovered their attacking verve under caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, midfielder Paul Pogba has said.

Solskjaer replaced Jose Mourinho in December and has made the most successful start by any manager in the club’s history, winning his first six games in all competitions.

The 45-year-old has abandoned the stifling defensive approach favoured by Mourinho and tried to reinstate the free-flowing football that was the hallmark of Manchester United’s most successful sides under Alex Ferguson.

“The way we are playing we have more possession of the ball. We know more where to attack and where to go.

“We have more of a pattern of play and more of a structure. That makes it easier for everyone,” Pogba told Sky Sports ahead of Saturday’s English Premier League home game against Brighton and Hove Albion.

Pogba, who was often asked to fill an unfamiliar defensive midfield role under Mourinho, has been granted greater attacking freedom by the Portuguese’s successor.

The France midfielder has responded with four goals and four assists in his last five matches.

Pogba also credited the form of goalkeeper David de Gea for their recent run.

“He’s obviously one of the best, if not the best, goalkeepers in the world and when we need him he is there,” Pogba said.

Manchester United Football Club is a professional football club based at Old Trafford in Greater Manchester, England and competes in the Premier League, the top flight of English football.

  • It’s game over, Utd in the past – Mourinho

Jose Mourinho is back in London and says he will return to management after he took a stroll the day after being sacked by Manchester United.

His tumultuous two-and-a-half year spell at Old Trafford came to an end on Tuesday, and he has returned to the family home having stayed in the Lowry Hotel during his time in Manchester.

Mourinho was approached by Sky Sports News as he walked down the street, but he was initially not in the mood to discuss his future in management.

Asked about his next move, Mourinho said: ‘No, you know me. You know me. Let me walk. I have nothing to say. You know me, if you want to walk with me then let’s walk to Battersea. I have nothing to say.’

He looked unimpressed to be disturbed on his stroll, pulling a face to Sports mail’s cameraman before his rather disengaged interview with Sky’s reporter.

Mourinho later went into more details, having apparently made a trip to Harrods, as he returned home carrying a shopping bag from the department store. He said his time with United is ‘in the past’ and that he did not want to dwell on his sacking, and instead look forward to a return to coaching.

Mourinho said: ‘Manchester United has a future without me and I have a future without them. Why should I be sharing more now? Even with the supporters, any of my feelings. It’s over. That’s the way I’ve always been.

‘I’ve been critical of managers that speak about details about what’s happened and who is to blame. That’s not me. I just want to finish like it happened yesterday and I’d like to say it’s game over. I just hope you media respect this way for me to be.

‘Until I get back to football I think I have my right to live my life as I do now. That’s what I want to do. Manchester United is in the past.’

  • Man Utd shares rise after Mourinho’s departure

Frankfurt-listed shares in Manchester United climbed in early deals after manager Jose Mourinho left the English Premier League football club on Tuesday.

It was an indication that investors welcomed the move after the club’s dismal start to the season.

The stock rose 1.4 percent by 1030 GMT after extending gains following the news.

Manchester United’s primary listing in the U.S. had not yet started trading as at the time of this report.

  • Mourinho is impossible

Sometimes I feel that Jose Mourinho is in the wrong trade. His theatrics defy human comprehension. He remains an unresolved puzzle, which confound many. The industry love to hate him. He is the man for all seasons, especially during matches which involve big clubs. Why people find pleasure in taunting Mourinho in high profile games remains a mystery. But one must congratulate Chelsea FC’s manager Maurizio Sarri for not aggravating the situation on Saturday, by getting his second assistant , Marco Ianni, to apologise to the Special One.

Mourinho raises the stakes with witty mind games, which he uses to distract gullible managers and players. In fact, he is reported to have alleged that his team list against Chelsea on Saturday was leaked by a suspected mole in his team. Mourinho, was searching for a mole after being stripped naked by the disclosure of the list even before the previous game against Newcastle. Pray, who doesn’t know how Mourinho sets up his team in big games? I digress!

English FA chieftains gave the insolent backroom staff till Thursday to respond to his inappropriate conduct. Ianni chose the wrong moment to step on the tail of the python. Mourinho told the world that he wasn’t going to celebrate if Manchester United beat Chelsea at home. That was a pointer to the fact that he had dug deep into his bag of tricks to outwit Sarri on the pitch.

Most followers of the game could bet their last dime on Mourinho not creating a scene at the stadium. Doubters must be shocked that the assault didn’t come from the Special One, which shows that he can be trusted to keep his word. What the backroom staff did by celebrating in front of the manager after Chelsea equalised in the 96th minute would have annoyed anyone. In fact, Mourinho was slow to act because the technical staff was doing it for the second time. This incident turned out to be the highpoint of the game instead of the six extra minutes awarded by the centre referee.

Ianni had watched the match from the upper tier of the East Stand. He came down to the team’s bench about 15 minutes before full time – something he is entitled to do in his role as the team’s analyst. Why he chose to taunt Mourinho is one issue the English FA chiefs should investigate, knowing that there are marked zones on the sidelines, which the opposition’s technical staff shouldn’t step over. One hopes that the referee captured this aspect for punishment. Making Mourinho the fall guy of this ugly incident will be a travesty of justice.

Indeed, England women manager Garry Neville said on NBC Sports: ‘’Whoever that staff member is of Chelsea has just been an absolute disgrace. No class, no humility. He’s gone straight into the face of Jose Mourinho, Michael Carrick and the Manchester United bench and just celebrated in their face. Absolutely disgraceful. He’s [Mourinho] the innocent one in all this. The guy on the Chelsea bench has run straight past him, celebrated in his face.

‘’Sarri celebrates. Then it’s this guy here who goes in front of Jose Mourinho. The first one he clenches his fist, and then as he goes back he celebrates again right in front of him. Disgraceful. If I was Maurizio Sarri I’d send that guy in and sack him from the club.’’

Do you agree with Neville’s recommendation, especially as Chelsea’s management condemned the second assistant’s misdemeanour?

‘’I want to thank Sarri for his honesty,’’ Mourinho said. ‘’I want to thank Chelsea for its honesty too. But I’m not happy that it’s going too far with the young boy. I don’t think he deserves more than what he got.

‘’He apologised to me, I accept his apologies. I think he deserves a second chance. I don’t think he deserves to be sacked. I don’t think he deserves anything more than the fact that his club was strong with him and he went through a situation that in the end he recognises that he was wrong.

‘’So, I  hope everybody does the same as I did, which is not to disturb the career of a young guy, which is probably a great guy, probably is a coach with great potential. And I’m not happy at all with more than that. End of story. With me, it’s the end of the story in the minute he apologised to me.’’

Happily, the governing body said in a statement: ‘’Chelsea coach Marco Ianni has been charged following the game against Manchester United on Saturday. It is alleged that his behaviour in the 96th minute constituted improper conduct. He has until 6pm on Thursday 25 October 2018 to respond to the charge.

‘’In relation to this incident, Jose Mourinho has been formally reminded of his responsibilities whilst both clubs have received similar official reminders in terms of the behaviour expected of their staff and players at all times whilst in the technical area.’’

Mourinho isn’t one to leave any venue without throwing darts. Saturday’s game wasn’t going to be an exception, with the Special One writing after the game that; ‘’ Naturally it was disappointing and frustrating not to take three points from Saturday’s visit to Stamford Bridge.

‘’We played so, so well that it was hard to take that we only got a draw. The boys were brilliant, we had control of the game. I am pleased that it was a good team performance and I am also pleased with the spirit of the team after going behind. We were very unlucky not to win but that’s football and we have to accept that.’’

Mourinho will continue to be the centre of controversies since it appears that such acts propel him to give his best. He did his best during the Saturday game until that melee. It gives pundits so much hope that Mourinho could change on the pitch. How about his conduct with the media or with match officials (post-match comments)? Mourinho’s foul-mouthed jibes haunt him like his pedigree in the game.

The Chelsea manager’s maturity is commendable. Sarri urged his assistant to prove his maturity, adding that: ‘’Everybody has to learn from mistakes. Now as a man, I am better than when I was 35. Otherwise, I would be a stupid man if I cannot learn from mistakes. I made one hundred mistakes (when I was younger).’’

‘’I want to give him another opportunity. I know the man and I know very well that he was really sorry. He realised the mistake. Everyone can make a mistake but you need to learn from the mistake. He will be able to do it. As for the FA, We were wrong so we have to accept the consequences,’’ Sarri said.

Was it out of place for Mourinho to ignore Ianni’s taunts even if he did for 100 times? Given the way in which Sarri has handled this matter, he certainly would have ignored Ianni, if he did what he did to the Chelsea manager. Mourinho should control his temper. He is the leader of the Manchester United side and much is expected of him in terms of discipline and his conduct on and off the pitch influences the players’ demeanour.

Ianni will be punished because Chelsea’s management won’t appeal the query, knowing the assistant coach misbehaved. But it would have been applause for Mourinho if he had pretended not to have seen Ianni.

Between Alex Iwobi and Mikel Obi

I’m excited that we won’t wait forever to replace John Mikel Obi in the Super Eagles’ holding midfield position as it appears Alex Iwobi fits the bill perfectly. Iwobi has been awesome for Nigeria and Arsenal. The good thing is that Gernot Rohr is thinking in this direction by stating that Iwobi is faster than Mikel and equally talented. Surprised? Don’t be. Iwobi is Okocha’s nephew, so it runs in the family.

Replacing star performers in the Eagles has been a nightmare, so much so that we still talk about the exploits of the late Rashidi Yekini anytime our national team’s strikers fritter away goal scoring chances. Football teams had special plans to stop Rashidi but he surmounted the oppositions’ traps and banged goals with aplomb. Fans stood up, hands raised to salute Yekini’s goals.

So many players have been tried in the creative midfield position to see if they could replicate some of Austin Okocha’s enchanting dribbling skills, but they have failed. We have been through three World Cup competitions since Okocha stopped playing and we still miss him so much so that when he plays in novelty games, the talk everywhere is for him to return to the Eagles, even if it means playing as a substitute.

Let me not waste space talking about how much we missed Nwankwo Kanu, aka Papilo. We have thrown up our hands in the search for Kanu’s replacement because Papilo’s sublime skills were out of this world. He looked frail but did incredible things with the ball.

Our search for good replacements for our stars rests not in the outfield position. There is still the debate over who will replace Peter Dodo Mayana Rufai in the goalpost. Vincent Enyeama distinguished himself, but he has retired. Carl Ikeme did well. Unfortunately, he was diagnosed of cancer of the blood before the Russia 2018 World Cup. Uzoho did well in Russia, amid talks of having Ikechukwu Ezenwa.

The interesting development is that Ikeme has been tasked with discovering good goalkeepers. Uzoho has done well so far, but was average against Libya in Sfax, even as his defenders were not enterprising enough to ward off the Libyans’ onslaught after leading by two goals. Nigeria eventually beat Libya 3-2.

We hope that Iwobi’s emergence will not make Mikel feel bad, if he eventually sits on the bench. This is the NFF’s best chance to make Mikel a player cum coach. It also will excite followers of the game, if Mikel is encouraged to become a coach, with the Nigeria soccer body footing all his bills. Mikel as the Super Eagles’ chief coach will be a welcome development because he has seen it all in the game.

  • Lukaku to return early to help depleted Man United – Mourinho

Belgium striker Romelu Lukaku has curtailed his vacation and will join Manchester United at the start of their Premier League campaign, manager Jose Mourinho has said.

Mourinho called for the club’s World Cup participants to shorten their rest days after last month’s tournament to help United.

The club have also been hindered by injuries, and hope to avoid a poor start to the league season.

England duo Phil Jones and Marcus Rashford were already set to return early and United will now be boosted by Lukaku’s decision.

Man United prepare to host Leicester City in their first league game on Aug. 10.

“We will have (Victor) Lindelof who started training two days ago,” Mourinho said after United’s 2-1 win over Real Madrid in the pre-season International Champions Cup (ICC) on Wednesday.

“Marcus Rashford, Jones and Lukaku are coming back three days early to try to be available for the team.”

The Portuguese boss praised his senior players for the intensity they showed in United’s pre-season tour but insisted the fixtures did not reveal anything new strategically.

“I didn’t learn anything (tactically). I know what (Ander) Herrera is, I know what (Juan) Mata is, I know what (Alexis) Sanchez is, I know what they are…

“I know the kids need time to grow up,” Mourinho said.

“The boys tried everything, they gave everything, they know we have to try to fight for the best result but tactically it means nothing.”

United have won two of their five pre-season fixtures so far and will be keen to make a quick start in their quest to win silverware this season.

Mourinho was unsure, however, if Anthony Martial would return in time to play Sunday’s final friendly against Bayern Munich.

The Frenchman left the team’s pre-season tour early to attend the birth of his daughter.
