  • ‘MPN’s claim of non-performance mischievous’

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State has debunked the allegation that the administration of Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu has not made significant impact since inception.

It described the allegation as baseless and wicked.

The party’s State Publicity, Secretary Alex Kalejaye, admonished critics of the administration to always suppress sentiments in their assessments and make constructive arguments supported with facts.

The state chapter of the Mega Party of Nigeria (MPN) had said the government had not recorded any achievement.

But the APC spokesman argued that an administration that built and repaired over 65 kilometres of roads in 15 months “deserves commendations and not condemnation”.

Kalejaye said: “The APC-led government in Ondo State has ensured prompt payment of workers’ salary, in addition to offsetting four of the inherited seven-month backlog of entitlements. The effects of this on the economic activities are unquantifiable.

“Besides construction and rehabilitation of roads, the government is also building and repairing over 50 schools, spread across the 18 local government areas, to enhance conducive learning environment.

“The governor has also directed the employment of medical practitioners, besides administrative workers, to shore up efficiency in our health institutions. The previous government, in which leaders of the MPN belonged and benefitted from massively, failed in all these.”

  • Mpn: Balogun is not our candidate

The Ekiti State Mega Party of Nigeria (MPN) has urged the Police and the Department of State Services to stop the winner of the May 12 primary, Dr. Sunday Balogun, from parading himself as the candidate.

The party in separate petitions to the two security agencies dated June 2, maintained that Chief Adebisi Omoyeni is its authentic candidate for the July 14 governorship election.

Omoyeni has filed a suit at the Federal High Court, Ado-Ekiti to challenge the substitution of his name with that of Omoyeni which he said violated the provisions of the Electoral Act 2010 and the 1999 Constitution.

The petition signed by the MPN Chairman, Chief Dare Adekolu, and Secretary, Prince Adekunle Aladesanmi, accused Balogun of impersonation.

In the petition titled: “Misrepresentation of MPN Gubernatorial Candidate in the July 14 Gubernatorial Election,” the party sought the urgent intervention of the police and DSS to “call Balogun to order and stop him from further acts of impersonation which can lead to confrontation and breakdown of law and order”.

The petition reads: “We wish to draw your attention to the ongoing act of impersonation, brazen disregard to lawful order of the court and public peace by one Sunday Balogun who has been going round the state parading himself as the gubernatorial candidate of the party in contravention of lawful court orders.

“As a reminder, you will recall the order of the Federal High Court, Ado Ekiti (Suit No: FHC/AD/CS/11/2018) of 2nd May, 2018 which ordered the faction of the MPN which Sunday Balogun belonged should not conduct any primary and INEC should not witness or entertain outcome of such illegal gubernatorial primary in the event of conduct against lawful order of the court,” it stated.

Adekolu and Aladesanmi, who said the party had briefed INEC, police force headquarters, Abuja and DSS headquarters Abuja about his action, stated:

“It is therefore a dangerous contravention by Sunday Balogun to be parading himself even after INEC has published the final list of all the 35 accredited gubernatorial candidates in Ekiti State as can be seen in the INEC list, Chief Adebisi Omoyeni is our authentic candidate in the election.”

    Youths urged to embrace entrepreneurship

The Akwa Ibom State Programme Consultant/Director of the Graduate Assistance Programme (GAP), George Inyangette II, has urged unemployed youths to embrace entrepreneurship.

GAP is an employability scheme, especially for young graduates.

Inyangette II addressed reporters yesterday in Uyo on the scheme’s plan to reduce graduate unemployment.

The consultant said the primary objective of the programme is to enhance the employability profile of graduates as well as increase their entrepreneurial drive.

He said: “We are still working at it, because it requires a paradigm shift to entrepreneurial mindset, given the fact that our youths still prefer paid jobs in the white collar setting.

“We are really looking at how to move away from preparing graduates for paid employment to training them to become entrepreneur-inclined.

“We are working to gradually increase the entrepreneurial interest among young graduates. That is, we’re looking at the possibilities of getting support from the government to set up a source for training the youths as entrepreneurs. A lot of them build websites; it is a part of their project. So, they can do this for organisations. This can be a good business for them to earn income from.”

Inyangette II explained that the GAP training was a partnership between the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC)/Mobil Producing Nigeria (MPN) Joint Venture, which had been handling the scheme’s funding since its first phase.

According to him, some monthly stipends will be given to the trainees for six months.

He said: “The enrolment process is purely on merit. Yes, usually, you would have pressure from here and there, but we have a policy.

“Mobil is interested in maintaining the standard in this programme. So, we have also insisted that it goes by merit.”

N1.44b oil money causes protest in Akwa Ibom

Souths at Esit Eket in Akwa Ibom State have protested over the N1.44 billion oil spill development funds given by the Mobil Producing Nigeria Unlimited (MPN).

They urged Akwa Ibom State Governor Godswill Akpabio to disband the oil spill compensation committee set up by the government.

The placard-carrying youths accused the paramount ruler of Esit Eket, Ubong Assam, of converting the funds into personal use, an allegation one of his aides, who preferred anonymity, denied.

The youths marched on Ntak-Inyang road to Assang road and stopped at Esit Eket Local Government.

During the protest, business activities were paralysed. There was traffic gridlock and motorists sought alternative routes.

    Some of the placards read: “Mobil keep our money for proper sharing”; “Youths demand five per cent of the N1.44 billion oil spill development funds”; “We say no to N120 million storey building for paramount ruler”; “Tell us who will manage the hotel complex and the mega filling station”; “Is N120 million storey building a life touching projects?”; No bullet proof car for paramount ruler”; “Marginalisation of the youths by the elders is horrible”;

“We the youths want the state government to disband the committee on oil spill compensation and set up a new committee to foster peace and unity in the core oil communities”.

The youths leader, Patrick Owodo, said they were protesting following the injustice done to them by the elders of Esit Eket.

According to him, based on the sharing formula of the oil spill compensation development funds, N1.44 billion would be allocated to Esit Eket for the developmental projects.
