  • I would’ve LOVED to be a PAINTER-MR 2KAY

    I would’ve LOVED to be a PAINTER-MR 2KAY

Nigerian music sensation, David Jumbo, aka Mr 2Kay signed to Grafton Entertainment,  is currently breaking the music hub locally and internationally. With his hit single Bad Girl Special, he became a brand and of the record label he represents. In this interview with FAMUYIWA DAMILARE, he discusses what made him venture into music while exploring his artistry

FOR how long have you been in the music industry?

I’ve been around for a while now, but not too long. I can’t really be precise on that, but I will say three years professionally.

Coming all the way from Port Harcourt to Lagos, what’s the motive?

The motive is basically to get to the bigger market. I didn’t just move from Port Harcourt to Lagos, I moved from Port Harcourt to London and from London to Lagos. It is for me to expand and I want to break into the African market; In UK I can’t break into the European market but coming to Lagos is for me to break into the African market music hub.

During your stay in Port Harcourt, what were you up to?

Well, as regards that, I’ve been doing music over there as well. I have family in Port Harcourt, if it’s not music it’s been family and friends.

Moving to Lagos now, has it been favourable for you as an artiste?

It’s really been great; since I have been around I’ve been able to make myself a brand known to people.

The journey from your home to your record label, how was it like?

I got signed to Grafton Record as in 2010. And it didn’t just happen; I have been approaching them since 2007 till I got signed on the platform. I didn’t give up on it the whole time and I am thankful things turned out for good.

They once organised a music competition won by me. The local government of the community actually gave them the competition to handle, and at that point I won the competition they got more interested in me. But they didn’t sign me immediately. I was in Lagos when I got a call from the CEO of Grafton Records that they wanted to work with me. At that point, I had to go back to Port Harcourt to make the deal.

Have you always wanted to be an artiste right from childhood?

I wouldn’t say that because my mom made the decision. I had wanted to be a painter, not a musical artiste. I focused more on painting and doing music as fun, but it apparently dawned on me that my artistry creativity can make exploits via music. I can tell a story better singing than painting. And so far, I could explain myself better doing music; I’m giving it a best shot now.

Your motive is driven by what?

It is actually driven by my mum; she was the one that inspired me. I grew up playing a lot of music, and afterwards I went to school where I got involved in a lot of activities and it’s been great for me.

Who was your role model and how has he/she enhanced your brand?

Internationally, I look up to Chris Brown, and locally I look up to people like Timaya, Tuface Idibia.

What would you have been doing, if not music, by now?

I would probably be working with an oil company by now.

Apparently, do you see yourself doing other stuffs in the future?

Of course, I intend venturing into other things. Basically, the oil industry has got me attracted a lot, and I will surely be involved in doing business as regards oil supplies and stuffs.

Looking at the entertainment scene today, what do you think is not right that you intend to make right?

I will like a scenario where an artiste can earn according to the work he’s putting out there. I will honestly be glad to stop piracy. I don’t think that is easy to do because a lot of people see it as what is right.

Piracy is being seen as promotion in Nigeria; a lot of people pay to get their song pirated because that is how the street gets to know them. Albums don’t even sell that much these days because of the digital age we are. A lot of people want to download your song for free; they don’t care about what has been involved to get the job done.

I don’t know how that will work actually, but I will be glad to change that as regards the music industry. I do hope the major stakeholders in this field will fix things.

With the smash hit you have on ground now, how has it been for you as a person?

You mean ‘Who no like better thing’? In three days, I got over 10,000 views and it is still counting. And it’s been great, well accepted worldwide.

How do you relate to the fact that people don’t know the original song that brought you to the limelight featuring Patoranking is the remix of the Bad Girl Special people are familiar with?

Well, I have no idea of what to say in this prospect, but at first the introduction of the song was done with Patoranking. Some persons that actually listened to the song felt the vibes, later on I just felt like wanting the female version of the song as a remix.

Despite people’s opinion on doing the remix of the song, I insisted on doing the female version. I went for Tiwa Savage but she was heavily pregnant, so she couldn’t do the song. We moved on to Eva and the delay was unbearable for me, when I couldn’t wait any longer I called Seyi Shay and she recorded the song alongside Cynthia Morgan.

These are all busy people, Cynthia Morgan and Seyi Shay. They showed me love at the end of the day and I’m quite grateful for that.

Would you have gotten the nomination if the girls had not jumped on the song?

It is not about the girls, it is the song. Though the remix of the song brought me out, if you say that song made it for me, it is fine! God did it for me with the song. And kudos to Seyi Shay and Cynthia Morgan, they actually did the song with their whole heart.

But I must say, with or without the song, I’ve been nominated before at the NEA. So it is not my first nomination; this is like my second. The other one I was nominated as the Best Diaspora Artiste of the Year and that was 2014 which I didn’t get. This year, I’m also nominated alongside Cynthia Morgan and Seyi Shay for best collaboration.

What is the most essential fashion item you cannot go out without?

That should probably be my shade.

What should we be expecting from you anytime soon?

Expect from me more singles and videos. Hopefully, I intend to drop an album this year or first quarter of next year.
