  • Lagos engages stakeholders on heritage sites

Lagos State Government has rallied stakeholders on the need for preservation of historical and cultural heritage sites and monuments in the state.

The forum which took place at the Lagos State Council for Arts and Culture, Ikeja,  was attended by owners and managers of heritage sites, traditional rulers, and other stakeholders.

According to Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Mr. Steve Ayorinde, the stakeholders forum was meant to create an avenue for the state government and stakeholders to examine issues of preserving, protecting, restoring and promoting historical and cultural sites and monuments in the state.

He said this was in line with the determination of Lagos State governor, Mr. Akinwumi Ambode, who in his inaugural speech promised to “engage investors and stakeholders in creating the enabling environment for tourism, entertainment and art and an iconic infrastructure for the benefit of all Lagosians”.

Ayorinde disclosed that the forum is a follow up to the first gathering held in October, 2017, emphasizing that the objectives of the forum was to ensure that the heritage sites and monuments in the state are maintained and make attractive for tourist/ visitors and to keep historical monuments for generations to come.

While reeling out the benefits of preserving the heritage sites and monuments in the state, the Commissioner reiterated that they are precious to the state government just as it is in most advanced countries of the world.

In a short keynote presentation by Dr. Tunji Adejumo, An Associate Professor in the Department of Architecture, University of Lagos and Architect Theo Lawson talked on their interchanging heritage and culture as well as why our heritage and culture should be preserved. They noted that all indigenous groups in Lagos have their festival routes and that it’s for the people of each area to sit and package whatever heritage sites they have for tourism purposes. The two scholars both agreed that there is the need for inventory of all facets of cultural heritage resources, consensus on immovable heritage to be addressed, create an enabling environment for private driven small scale museum for display as well as exploration of statewide cultural festival calendar.

Highlights of the suggestions provided at the end of the forum include, the establishment of Ibile Festival to showcase the uniqueness of the culture of the state, the establishment of cultural heritage committee, adequate funding of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture in order to efficiently perform and using the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) as a veritable tool for public sensitizations.

Lawmaker charge not to use public office for financial gain

Nigerian Lawmakers have been advised to make laws that will have direct impact on the people rather than use public office for their personal gain.

The advice was given Monday by Professor Patrick Lumumba, Director, Kenya School of Law, Nairobi, at a special parliamentary session organised by the Lagos State House of Assembly in commemoration of Lagos state at 50.

Addressing a large gathering audience including, The National Leader of the All Progressive Congress (APC) Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwumi Ambode, Senators Representing Lagos East and west Constituency, Senator Gbenga  Ashafa and  Solomon Olamilekan, party chieftains, former speakers of the House, captains of industries, members of diplomatic corps among others.

Speaking on the topic, ’The Importance of the Legislature in Democratic Governance,’ he emphasised that the nation or state could survive a bad executive, bad judiciary, but not a bad legislature.

“Beyond your important titles, how are you serving Lagos, how have you served Lagos.  What would be said of you, when you are gone or even as you are alive?

“You are never successful until you go down into the grave with success. Those, who acquire power, must exercise it with humility. Before you drink the gin of political power, you must have a foundation of integrity,” he said.

He lamented the current happening in Nigeria, saying if Africa has to be great, Nigeria must be great.

“Nigeria started on a sound footing before the government was crudely disrupted by coup-de-tats and went through a bitter civil war.”

The scholar said further that it should be noted that Nigeria adopted democracy in 1979, but that the democracy the country is practicing was not home-grown and that it is Euro-centric.

He said the nation’s democracy could be customized to achieve the aspirations of the country, saying that the relationship among the legislative, executive and the judiciary must be symbiotic.

The legislature, he stated represents the people and that it is a privilege to honour and represent the people.

“Those, who steal public funds abuse the power given to them by the people.  The legislature is the heart of the people.  On a mere allegation of corruption, the legislature brought down the government of South Korea and the same thing happened in Brazil.

“But here in Nigeria and Africa, does the legislature bring thieves down. If Nigeria is to be great, you legislators must make solemn vow that you would make laws that would benefit the people.  Make laws that would serve the people and the country.

“Nigeria can be great if you make a solemn vow that you would be greater than Dubai and Singapore,” he said.

Another speaker, CEO of Financial Derivatives Company Limited Mr. Bismarck Rewane,  said lagos continue to play a vital role as the financial headquarters of Nigeria.

Rewane who spoke on “Economic Development- The Role of The Legislature,” revealed that Lagos State contributes 22% to the economy of Nigeria and the it has a GDP of $131 Billion.

He stated that if Lagos was taken away from Nigeria the country would fall to the third position in Africa, while Lagos would be number seven in Africa, and that the state is bigger than Kenya,  Togo,  and Cote De Voire economically.

Tinubu while addressing the large turnout of residents, that witnessed the commissioning, said “I was worried hell when you took over, not about your credibility, character or capacity, but because however wise or smart a man is, if there is no resources to back the ideas, production would be zero, progress would be zero.

“When you (Ambode) took over, I know you inherited a burden of debt. The debt profile of Lagos was high, I was wondering how you will reengineer and face the challenges to make progress.

“Today I can see your report card, you have scored well, you have shown prudency especially in the use of resources of the State.”

The National Leader also commended the Governor for re-engineering the financial structure of the state, nothing that the governor did not disappoint the trust repose on him.

“You didn’t disappoint us. Ambode is silently achieving, religiously executing and brilliantly giving results for Lagos State.

“All over Lagos, we are seeing the results. At Oshodi, on our way down here, you can see what is happening there, that place is a construction site. It used to be a den of robbers but what is going on there now is developmental activities for the benefit of the entire country.

Tinubu thanked Ambode for marking his birthday with the commission of a number of projects, describing it as a reflection of a very good governor who is a thinker and a doer.

“Today, you (Ambode) have given me a good birthday present. This is a great opportunity for me to be very proud again.”

Governor Ambode in his remark, said the projects commissioned were parts of his administration’s drive of inclusiveness and not leaving anybody or location within the state out of development.

Ambode said exactly a year ago when he visited the community and saw the terrible state in which the road network was in, he felt touch to do something immediately, which was why he asked the state Public Works and contractors to move to site three weeks after his visit.

“This project is an indication that our government listens and responds to the needs of our people. We will continue to deliver first class infrastructure to improve the lives of our people, boost the economy and create jobs for our youths. On your part, I urge you to take ownership and protect the infrastructure provided. Use them appropriately so that they can serve you for a long time.

“Beyond this, we are very grateful to the contractor on this project, Engr. Olalekan Adebiyi, who has deemed it necessary to contribute to the healthcare of this community by donating a Primary Healthcare Centre to the Alimosho people. Thank you very much, Mr. Adebiyi.

“On our part, we have equipped the Health Centre and provided a brand new ambulance which will be stationed at this centre to respond to any emergency in the community. A certificate will be issued to the donor to enable him offset his tax obligations. We hope this will encourage other well-meaning Lagosians to take up Corporate Social Responsibility activities within their communities.

“In addition to this, we are celebrating our mentor; a visionary leader, the brain behind the 21st century Lagos, His Excellency, the former Governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu today. We have decided to honour him by commissioning the construction of a network of roads within the boundaries of Lagos and Ogun States.

He listed the roads to include Church Street, Giwa Street, Victor Fagbemi Road, Ogunfayo Road, Ogundare Street, Salami Kazeem, all totalling 5.5km with drainage, walkways and street lights adding that the road network would ease the pressure on the Abeokuta Expressway and links residents with Iyana Ipaja, LASU-Iba Expressway.

He also identified several roads for immediate construction and rehabilitation adding that work would commence next week on these roads so as to give a face lift to the area.

“Let me use this opportunity to appeal for the cooperation of residents of these communities with the contractors so that they can deliver these networks of roads not later than the scheduled completion date. The construction may cause a few discomforts but it will only be for a short while and the end result will be for the benefit of all.

“To our irrepressible, dogged and outstanding leader, I say a big Happy Birthday. It is now my honour and priviledge to call on the “Jagaban” to commission this Bridge and Adjoining Roads for the use of his people in Alimosho.”

State Commissioner for Housing Mr. Gbolahan Lawal, who represented the governor at the presentation of keys, held in the conference room of the Staff Clinic yesterday, said the government has taken the bull by the horn through the implementation of the rent to own policy aimed at making housing more readily affordable and accessible to the citizenry.

According to him, “the need to create a new face of accommodation for Lagosians especially the low and middle income earners has become imperative in view of the ever increasing population of the state.”

Lawal said under the rent-to-own policy, all prospective home owners’ needs to do is to make five percent commitment fee, take possession and pay up the remaining balance towards the ownership of the property over a period of 10 years.

He recalled that not too many people believed three months ago when the governor launched the policy in four locations including, Epe, Ikorodu Agbowa and Ojokoro, adding that today even the doubting Thomases have benefited from the gesture.

Lawal added that the rental housing programme is targeted at meeting the needs of the citizens who may not be interested in ownership or may not be able to meet the requirement of 30 percent equity contribution for mortgage or five percent commitment fee for the rent-to-own programme.

Earlier, General Manager, Lagos State Mortgage Board, Mr. Dehinde Tunwashe, said the selected estates under the scheme are located in serene and beautiful gated communities with facilities such as water treatment plants, adequate parking space, health care centre, estate management office, street lights, recreational area and a police post for security.

“I am still in shock, but very happy. This is real. I just tried by luck, but I was surprised that I was selected. This is big, it is real and transparent and a testimony that it is good to be a tax payer in Lagos”, an excited Olajumoke said.

The protesters led by the chairman, LASU Association of Dental Students,  Mr. Sydon Agbor,  lamented that the students had spent eight years instead of the stipulated six years, due to the non-accreditation of one of the program called Medical and Dental program.

  • Alade market: Why we support relocation – Iyaloja

The Iyaloja of Alade Market at Allen Avenue, Ikeja, Chief (Mrs) Aina Adenuga has appreciated the Lagos State Governor, Mr Akinwumi Ambode as well as the Ikeja Sole Administrator Engr. Abiodun Taiwo for the systematic, people friendly approach to the relocation of the market to their new site. According to her, ‘we are happy that government first provided a better, bigger and more conducive place for us before asking us to relocate. We are happy to be coming to the new Alade Market which we see as a movement to our ‘Promised land.

Speaking while on a visit to The Sole Administrator of Ikeja Local Government Area, Engr Abiodun Taiwo in his Council office, The Iyaloja told the administrator that out of the 299 present bona-fide allottees in the old Alade market, a total of 250 have collected their allocation papers to the new Alade market after paying the allocation fee of N150, 000. On the issues of a few traders in the old market who are protesting the relocation of the market, the market leader noted that most of them are squatters and those who over the years have erected shanties and illegal shops within the market. ‘I can’t understand why a few people who do not have legitimate papers in the market will want to frustrate the good intentions of the government at relocating us to a better and secured place where even our customers will have enough parking space’, she added. According to Chief (Mrs) Adenuga, the traders are already putting final touch to their respective shop in preparation to the July 18th official opening of the new Alade Market.

Responding, the Sole Administrator, Engr Taiwo said that his administration is ready to listen to anyone who has a genuine case regarding the movement of the market especially if such persons are allottees of the old Alade market. “The good thing is that we have more than enough shops to go around both the old alottees whom we are obliged to give back their shops in the new location as well as another over 200 shops to sell to new prospects.”

He therefore called on any one who’s genuinely interested in having a shop in the market to approach his office for necessary actions. According to him, ‘it will be totally unfair for any group to play down government good intentions of relocating the old Alade market which has turned into a nuisance around the ever busy Allen Avenue and environs., Engr Taiwo added.

Explaining the reasons behind government’s determination to relocate the market to the new site, the Sole Administrator noted that ‘with the mega status of Ikeja, the old Alade market can no longer stand the test of time. Coupled with that, most of the structures in the market failed integrity test hence need to have them pulled down”. The Sole Administrator also cited the lack of necessary facilities in modern market in the market which he noted have been provided for in the new site.  ‘’I wonder how a market like Alade in the heart of Ikeja can function without a car park and having just two units of toilet’’

Ikeja Local Government had already inaugurated a 6 man committee to oversee the smooth allocation and movement all original allottees to the new market. The committee is headed by the immediate past Executive Secretary of Ikeja Local Government Council, Alhaji Adekunle Dally-Adeokun, while other members drawn from among various stakeholders in the New Alade market project include the Iyaloja of Alade Market, Chief (Mrs) Elizabeth Aina Adenuga and the market developer and Managing Director of Masters Reality Int’l Concept, Egnr. Lai Omotola. Others are HoD, Environment of Ikeja Local Government Area, Mr Kazeem Kolawole, Mr Wole Ogunlolu. The Local Council legal officer, Barr, Rabiu Kazeem Dare will act as the committee’s Secretary.

The new Alade market which is located about 150 metres away from the old one, off Obafemi Awolowo Way, Ikeja seats on 2.5 hectares of land. The market which has been described as one of the most modern of all markets so far in Lagos has 504 lock up shops, 200 units of open stalls, 20 toilets, 350kva and 150kva generators, crèche, 3 boreholes as well as an ample car park that can take up to 350 cars at a time among others.
