From wheelbarrow pusher to Civil Defence commandant

His is the typical grass-to-grace story. He lost his parents at age three. With no one to help as he grew, he started pushing wheelbarrow around, earning meagre sums of money from clients. At a point he learned to ride a motorcycle, and soon became an okada operator. Life seemed harsh, the future bleak.

Mr Desmond Agu kept pushing, and one day he joined the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) as a volunteer. Today he is a commandant in the security agency.

Commandant Agu is not shy talking about his humble beginnings. His 54th birthday offered another opportunity to relive his experience in the hope that some struggling youth will be inspired and see the bright side of life.

Agu credited God with his transformation, and demonstrated his joy by showcasing some engaging dance steps. His impressed audience cheered him on.

Before his deployment to Makurdi, Commandant Agu had served as commandant in Plateau and Bayelsa states.

The birthday celebration and thanksgiving service was held at the NSCDC office in the Federal Secretariat, Makurdi, the Benue state capital.

The commandant urged Nigerians, especially those struggling with finances, to look up to God with hope.

The Assistant Inspector General of Police Zone 4, Assistant Comptroller of Prisons, Benue State and the Igbo community in Makurdi attended the event. Some described Agu as a workaholic.

Commandant Agu hails from Imo State and is commandant at the Zone H headquarters of the NSCDC, Makurdi.

NSCDC boss receives award for resolving crisis in Bayelsa Ohaneze

The socio-cultural group, Ohaneze Ndigbo, Bayelsa State chapter, has honoured the state Commandant, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Mr. Desmond Agu. Ohaneze recently visited Agu in his Yenagoa office and bestowed on him an award as a peacemaker.

Led by its state President, Chief Amaku Maurice, Ohaneze believed that Agu deserved the Ambassador of Peace Award. He stood up to be counted when leadership crisis took over the Igbo body.

Maurice and his newly-elected executive council, faced stiff opposition from persons who kicked against their emergence. It was a battle that tore the Igbo community apart in Bayelsa and attracted the attention of security agencies as well as the government.

But Agu showed up. He was the chief mediator; a forerunner for peace. The commandant initiated many peace moves. On many occasions, he led other security commanders in the state to hold talks with the warring parties.

As a security commander, his ultimate aim was to stop the crisis and prevent possible violent clashes that could affect the overall peace of the state. As an Igbo indigene from Imo State, Agu was worried that the crisis was painting his people black. It gave him many sleepless nights until he brought it to a reasonable end.

Maurice, who led the delegates including some special assistants to the governor, said the award was to appreciate Agu for all his concerns towards the Ohaneze. Describing him as a great man of value, and a peacemaker, Maurice observed that it took Agu’s interventions to restore peace within the Igbo community.

Maurice said: “After the election, crisis broke out and a feud we thought will never end, Agu came into the matter and settled it. Today, am proud to let him know that the Ohaneze Bayelsa state has been moving smoothly so far.

“We have been having our monthly meetings and peace has been restored to the Ohaneze courtesy of his interference. Though there are still some little challenges by some aggrieved members, we believe that with time, all wounds will be healed.

“We all are delighted for the welcome you always grant us whenever we call on you and the listening ear you give us. Peacemakers never lack peace. Today we have come to reply this feature by giving you the award of ‘Ambassador of Peace of Ndigbo Bayelsa’. It is called the Omeudo 1 in Igbo dialect. We are really thankful for everything you have been doing and has kept on doing”.

In fact, the elated Agu welcomed the award with a song he interpreted as live and let live, the world is enough to contain everyone. He asserted that there was no need to fight for everything. He said if given the opportunity to come back to life again, he would return as an Igbo man.

Describing the award as rare, he appealed to the President and his council to intensify their reconciliation efforts and make peace with other aggrieved parties. Addressing Maurice, he said: “You said in your words that time would  heal the hearts of the aggrieved but I want to beg you to please go and look for your brothers.

“They remain your blood irrespective of your differences. A tree never makes a a forest. We all need one another. There is no perfect election anywhere. Even families experience such. Siblings get envious of each other, spouses complain and it continues like that.

“It is now your responsibility to take in everyone as they are, show them love and care. We all came to Bayelsa to look for what to eat, may we not fall on what will eat us. We didn’t come to fight, so let’s take each other as one since we decided to be under one umbrella of the Ohaneze”.

Agu urged the Igbo community in the state to maintain the peace. He appealed to the youths to keep themselves busy and avoid criminal activities. He told them that the security agencies were monitoring activities in the state to arrest and prosecute persons involved in cultism and other violent crimes.

On his part, a Patron of Ohaneze, Chief Wilfred Iyinagolu, thanked Agu for watching over the Igbo community the way the hen cares for her chicks. Also, the Special Assistant to the Governor on Non-Indigenes, Chief Sunny Chukwueze, said Agu deserved the honour.

lso speaking, the Deputy Commandant, NSCDC, Ikima Austine, said Agu had set good examples for his subordinates. He said they would continue to emulate the qualities of the commandant.

•Agencies compile list of stolen arms, ammunition
•Suspect arrested by NSCDC, handed over to JTF

Security agencies in Bayelsa State are probing the identity of Suoyo mentioned by the notorious billionaire kidnap kingpin, Chukwudumeje Onwuamadike, aka Evans, as one of his gang members in the state.

Evans, in one of his numerous confessional statements, named Suoyo as one of the active members of his gang, who had the assignment of buying arms and ammunition, for their operations.

He said: “When Suoyo, who lives in Bayelsa State, called me and expressed fears, I also assured him that nothing was going to happen. I told him I was making plans for another operation and needed him to go into the creeks and buy a new set of arms and ammunition”.

But security commanders in Bayelsa were said to have met over the weekend to analyse Evan’s confessional statement to unmask the real identity of Suoyo.

In the meeting which held in Government House in the presence of Governor Seriake Dickson, the security commanders were said to be certain that the Suoyo mentioned by Evans was the same person recently arrested by the operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in the state.

Suoyo Dickson was arrested and paraded on Thursday by the state Commandant of NSCDC, Mr. Desmond Agu, in connection with the recent attack on a pipeline belonging to the Nigerian Agip Oil Company (NAOC).

Suoyo, popularly known as Hustler, reportedly led a gang of vandals that attacked the Agip pipeline at Lagosgbene, Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of the state on May 30, 2017.

He was, however, arrested on June 16, 2017 at Agbigiba community in Southern Ijaw.

Suoyo, in his confessional statement, also admitted having some criminal camps in the creeks saying he led an oil and gas task force operating in Southern Ijaw to destroy the camps but became frustrated when the task force failed to reward him.

On how he attacked the pipeline, Evans said; ”I used two handsaw blades and handsaw to open up the point, I cut the handle in the valve, I fetched 20 litres of petrol, I lit spark lighter and threw it into the pipe and burnt it.”

”I burnt the pipeline because the task force  did not keep to their promise of employing us after making us to show them our bunkering camps and the subsequent destruction by the military.

”We showed them our camps, eight of them. All the camps did not belong to me. Three were mine while other groups have five. After showing them, the task force engaged the military to destroy our camps.

”The other groups, whose camps were destroyed were not happy with me. They said I betrayed them and they started planning to kill me and my family members. The situation put me under pressure more so the employment they promised all of us after seven days did not materialise”.

It was gathered that Agu, after parading the suspect, handed him over to the Joint Task Force, Operation Delta Safe (ODS) for further investigations.

A security source, who spoke in confidence, said at the meeting of the security commanders in Yenagoa, which was attended by the heads of ODS, the police and NSCDC, it was agreed that Suoyo should be subjected to further investigations.

Following Evans’ confession, the security heads were said to be linking him to the theft of service rifles of security operatives especially policemen in the state.

They recalled many attacks on operatives by criminals, who only fled with arms and ammunition handled by their victims.

“The security heads also agreed to compile a list of such stolen arms and ammunition in the state and send it to the Force Headquarters to know whether they were among the ones  recovered from Evans.

“The Suoyo mentioned by Evans seems in all ramifications to be the same suspected arrested by the NSCDC recently in connection with attack on a pipeline. The security heads in the state believe so and they will surely carry out further investigations to determine his linkage with the Evans’ gang.”

An operative of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) attached to Bayelsa Command and a suspected armed robber have died in a gun battle.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the incident took place along Kolo Creek road in Ogbia Local Government Area of the state on Wednesday.

The Commandant of the NSCDC in the state, Mr Desmond Agu, confirmed the incident on Thursday and said that armed robbers laid ambush for a patrol van of the Corps and killed one of the operatives.

He, however, praised his men for fighting back and overpowering the robbers with their superior gunfire resulting in the killing of one of the hoodlums and recovery of a riffle from the dead robbery suspect.

Agu said the Command had handed over the riffle and the Corpse of the robber to the state Police Command.

The armed robbers, according to an eye witness who preferred anonymity laid ambush for the Civil Defenders after allegedly attacking a security checkpoint along the road earlier.

“When they escaped from the scene, they sighted a security patrol van manned by operatives of the NSCDC and hid in the bush.

“When the van approached, they opened fire on it, killing one of the Corps operatives.

”But the operatives fired back at the hoodlums and shot one of the armed robbers while others escaped,” the witness said.
