  • Building collapse: Oyetola orders integrity test on houses

Osun State governor, Mr. Gboyega Oyetola, has ordered that integrity test be carried out on old and weak houses across the state.

According to the Supervisor for Works, Engr. Remi Omowaiye, the  governor gave the order that the test be carried out to prevent building collapse in the state.

In a statement on Sunday, Omowaiye said the directive was a necessary proactive measure following last week’s collapse of buildings in Lagos and Ibadan.

He said the governor wanted the integrity test to be carried out immediately because “the state does not want the collapse of any building.”

Omowaiye said relevant agencies and facilities in the state would be mobilized to ensure that what is necessary is done.

He enjoined members of the public to report to the authorities any observation they have on any building that is believed to be weak so that immediate action will be taken.

Also, Omowaiye disclosed that the governor has also directed the Ministry of the Environment to ensure that drains are cleared to prevent flooding as rainfall sets in.

He said the Ministries of Works, Environment, Land and Urban development would work together to take preemptive action against building collapse in the state.

He said: “We don’t want what happened last week in Lagos and Oyo states to happen here. That is why we are being proactive as directed by Mr. governor.”

The Oluwo of Iwo in Osun State, Oba Abdul-Rasheed Adewale Akanbi, has congratulated governor-elect, Mr. Gboyega Oyetola, and his deputy, Gboyega Alabi, on their victory in the just-concluded election.

The Oluwo, who also hailed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and Osun State residents for the peaceful conduct of the poll, described it as most keenly contested in the history of elections in the state.

He saluted Oyetola of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for his hard work and determination from the beginning to the end of the election.

The monarch reminded him of the task ahead in sustaining the current tempo of development in state.

Oba Akanbi advised the governor-elect not to forget his campaign promises of commitment to all parts of the state.

The monarch, who also advised Oyetola to be magnanimous in victory, added that since the state is his constituency, he should run an all-inclusive administration, as he promised during his campaign tours.

Also, a socio-political organisation, the Oranmiyan Group, congratulated Oyetola on his victory in the September 22 poll and September 27 rerun.

In a congratulatory message by its spokesman Sodiq Olajide, the group hailed the governor-elect and APC supporters “for the hard-fight victory after a dignified campaign”.

Oranmiyan urged him and party members to be magnanimous in victory as “the incoming administration prepares to unfold a new lease of life for the people of Osun State through purposeful and responsible governance”.

  • Ambode, Fayemi congratulate governor-elect

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, and the governor-elect of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi have joined other well-wishers in congratulating the governor-elect of Osun State, Mr Gboyega Oyetola, for winning the keenly contested governorship election in the State on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Oyetola was declared governor-elect by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) at the end of Thursday’s re-run election in seven wards.

Oyetola polled a total of 255,505 votes to defeat his closest rival and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Ademola Adeleke, who scored 255,023 votes.

Ambode, in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Habib Aruna, said it was a well-deserved victory as the people of Osun had made a choice to vote for continuity and experience, which he said Oyetola represents.

He congratulated the All Progressives Congress (APC) for yet another victory, saying it was a confirmation that the people still have confidence in the programme and policies of the party not only in Osun but also across the country.

He also commended the people of Osun State for comporting themselves during the exercise, noting that despite the inconclusive election on September 22, voters defied the heavy downpour to come out en masse to exercise their franchise during the re-run election.

“The election has been deservedly won. The good people of Osun have chosen quality continuity over uncertainty.

“I have no doubt in my mind that the Governor-elect will bring his wealth of experience to bear and continue with the good works of Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, call for unity and take Osun to greater heights,” Ambode said.

He also urged those aggrieved with the result to channel their grievances to the appropriate quarters rather than resort to self-help.

In similar vein, Ekiti State Governor-Elect, Dr Kayode Fayemi, and the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have congratulated Oyetola on his victory.

While Fayemi said the Southwest regional integration and development agenda will now become a reality, Ekiti APC urged Oyetola to consolidate on the gains recorded under outgoing Governor Rauf Aregbesola.

Fayemi in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media, Olayinka Oyebode, described the keenly contested election as a reflection of the huge political awareness and maturity of the people of Osun State, adding that it was heart-warming that the better candidate emerged victorious.

He said: “Congratulations to the Governor-Elect, Gboyega Oyetola, and to our great party, APC.  The people have spoken, and clearly too. It is indeed victory for democracy and all lovers of progress.

“The regional integration and development agenda of the South West would now become a reality, with all the attendant benefits for the people of the geo-political zone.”

Dr Fayemi, who described Oyetola as a seasoned administrator and astute manager of men and resources, said he is confident the governor-elect will take the state to the next level of development, having been a part of Governor Rauf Aregbesola’s development-focused administration.

Ekiti APC, in a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Hon. Ade Ajayi, described the victory as an opportunity for Oyetola to build on the good works of the Aregbesola administration whom he described as “the builder of modern Osun.”

Ajayi expressed optimism that the governor-elect would further transform Osun with the people-centered manifesto of the APC, going by his antecedents and exploits as a loyal party man who stood by his principal.

While pledging collaboration and cooperation with Osun APC, Ajayi commended Aregbesola for ensuring that the party retains Osun despite the “antics of some retrogressive and reactionary elements.”

The Ekiti APC hailed the people of Osun State for their steadfastness and peaceful conduct before, during and after the election, urging opposition parties to accept the result in good faith and cooperate with the governor-elect on the task of building a prosperous state.

  • Osun governorship primaries: SSG withdraws from race

Alhaji Moshood Adeoti, the Secretary to Osun State Government (SSG), has announced his withdrawal from the primaries of All Progressives Congress (APC) scheduled for Friday at the party’s headquarters in Osogbo.

Adeoti, in a letter addressed to the Chairman of APC Primaries Committee, Gov. Abdul’aziz Yari of Zamfara, on Friday, alleged that he was withdrawing because the primaries had been arranged to favour Mr Gboyega Oyetola, the Chief of Staff to Gov. Aregbesola.

He also said that there was no credible register of members with which free, fair and transparent direct primaries could be conducted.

“While I am not withdrawing from the governorship race, I have decided not to participate in the July 20, 2019 Direct Primaries of the APC in Osun State for the above stated and other reasons,’’ Adeoti said.
