    40 kidnappers arrested in Cross River

    The Cross River State Commissioner of Police, Mr Hafiz Inuwa, said 40 kidnappers were arrested between last February and December.

    Addressing reporters, Inuwa said 528 suspects were arrested for various offences, and 234 firearms recovered.

    He said this month, 51 suspects have been arrested for various offences, and weapons recovered from them.

    “The year 2018 has come with another success story as a landmark in the command’s effort to maintain peace and order, protect lives and property and prevention of crime.

    “I want to state categorically clear that the command is determined more than ever to surmount all forms of criminalities, bust criminal hideouts and expose all criminal elements operating within the state.

    “Through communications has made the world a global village, hence the general public are enjoined to cooperate with the police through useful information dissemination and partnership in community policing for effective, reliable and quality service delivery,” he said.

    Man sells son for N150,000

    The Cross River Police Command said on Wednesday that it had in its custody, a 52-year old man, Abraham Udoh, who allegedly sold his two-year old son for N150,000.

    The state Commissioner of Police, Mr Hafiz Inuwa, disclosed this at a media briefing in Calabar.

    Inuwa said that the suspect was arrested on July 24, shortly after his wife, Esther, reported the matter to the police.

    The police commissioner said that Udoh sold the child without the consent of the wife.

    He said thorough interrogation revealed that the suspect sold the child to an unknown woman residing in Uyo in Akwa Ibom.

    “On the 24th of July 2017, a case of child trafficking was reported at our Uwanse Divisional Headquarters here in Calabar.

    “One Esther Abraham reported that his husband sold their two-year old son without her consent.

    “Upon investigation, Udoh revealed that he sold the child at the sum of N150, 000 to an unknown woman residing at Uyo in Akwa Ibom State.

    “When he was arrested, the sum of N103, 000 was recovered from him and registered as an exhibit.

    “Investigation is in progress to arrest the alleged buyer and recover the child before they will be charged to court,” he said.

    Udoh admitted selling his son for the said amount in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

    “Actually, I sold the child because I needed some money. I have six children and I am really sorry for not telling my wife about it,’’ he said.

    The commissioner also told journalists that 26 other suspects were arrested by the state command for various offences in the state between June and July.

    Inuwa said five of them were armed robbery suspects arrested on July 20, after they had invaded the house of one Angela Obo in Calabar South.

    He said some locally-made pistols, one revolver also made locally, three rounds of 9 mm ammunition, three live cartridges among others items, were recovered from the criminals.

    Recovered 4,555 national ID cards: INEC staff gave us – Witness

    The police in Cross River on Monday arrested four suspected thieves for unlawful possession of 4,555 National Identity cards and 21 others who committed various offences, the Commissioner of Police, Mr Hafiz Inuwa, said.

    Inuwa, who made the development known when he addressed newsmen in Calabar on Tuesday, said the suspects were arrested by personnel of the Police Command in Cross on May 19.

    He said the suspected identity card thieves were arrested at a location on Eyo-Edem Street in Calabar following a tip-off.

    The commissioner explained that after a thorough search on the suspects, 4,555 National Identity cards bearing different names were found on them.

    Upon interrogation, the four suspects confessed that one Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) staff gave the cards to them. All the four suspects confessed to the crime and investigation is on-going in order to arrest the alleged INEC staff

    The commissioner said that the command also arrested three suspected armed robbers on May 2, shortly after they allegedly robbed Solomon Alfred of his N380,000 and three mobile phones.

    “On May 2, our men arrested three suspected armed robbers who had robbed Solomon Alfred of his N380,000 and his three mobile phones.

    “Also on May 13, our men arrested a student of the University of Calabar for being in possession of fake currencies.

    “During interrogation, the suspect claimed that a friend of his that resides at Uyo gave him the fake currencies.

    “Investigation is on-going to unravel the truth of the matter and arrest his accomplices to ascertain the source/distributor of these fake currencies,” he said.

    The police also arrested three suspected manufacturers of firearms on May 19, the commissioner said.

    He also said  the police recovered five locally made pistols; six locally made single barrel guns, one locally made single barrel long gun, among others.

    “During the period under review, the state police command has arrested 25 suspects for various offences.

    “We recovered five AK 47 rifles, seven magazines and 200 rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition, one battle axe, eight live cartridges, among others,” he said.

  • Police arrest fake Naval Captain in Cross River

    The Police command in Cross River on Friday said it had arrested one, Jeremiah Ogar, 31, for being in possession of a naval cap and impersonating as a Navy Captain.

    The Commissioner of Police, Mr Hafiz Inuwa, who presented the suspect to newsmen on Friday in Calabar, said that Ogar was arrested on April 26 at Utukwang village in Obudu Local Government Area.

    Inuwa said the suspect had been using fake status of a Navy Captain to defraud and intimidate unsuspecting members of the public in the area.

    “In our efforts to rid the state of heinous crimes and criminal activities, men of the operatives attached to Obudu Division of the Nigeria Police on April 26 arrested one fake Navy Captain, Jeremiah Ogar, aged 31.

    “The suspect was arrested with a navy cap and he was parading himself as a navy Captain and using same to defraud and intimidate unsuspecting members of the public.

    “Investigation is ongoing to ascertain the owner of the said cap and how he came about it.

    “We remain committed in our efforts to rid the state of all criminal activities,’’ the Commissioner assured.

    Ogar, a commercial motorcycle rider, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that he bought the cap in the market alongside nine of his friends.

    “I bought the cap in the market because I fell in love with the design. We were about ten of us that bought the cap in the market.

    “I have not been using the cap to terrorise, intimidate or defraud anybody in this community. I am shocked why the police arrested me,’’ he said.

    Couple sell six-year-old daughter for N400, 000 in Cross River 

    The Commissioner of Police in Cross River State, Mr Hafiz Inuwa, Wednesday said they had arrested a couple for allegedly selling their six-year-old daughter for N400, 000.

    He said the suspects were arrested at Ikom Local Government area on April 26 following a tip-off.

    According to Inuwa, the couple sold the child to enable them offset their house rent and open up a small provision shop.

    “On April 26, 2017, following a tip-off, our men arrested a couple, George-Sunday Udoh and his wife Victoria, for allegedly selling their daughter at the cost of N400,000.

    “The suspects were arrested by our operatives attached to the Ikom division. The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department here in Calabar and investigation is ongoing,’’ he said.

    But the father of the child, who was paraded, denied the allegation.

    “It is true that we don’t have money and things are very hard with me and my wife, but we did not sell our baby for N400, 000,’’ he said.
