  • ‘Politicians recruiting armed thugs’

    The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Borno yesterday decried the recruitment of armed thugs for political campaigns in the state.

    Mr Ibrahim Abdullahi, the NSCDC commandant in the state, told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Maiduguri the command had noticed an influx of thugs at campaign grounds.

    Abdullahi said the thugs were being used by politicians to intimidate opponents at political rallies.

    “Such actions by the politicians could mar the fragile peace recorded. The insurgents can equally disguise among them to perpetrate unsuspected attacks.

    “We, therefore, warn politicians that these nefarious activities are contrary to Section 227 of the 1999 constitution (as amended) and sections 94 and 95 of the Electoral Act,’’ he said.

    NSCDC seizes 1000 litres of petrol from Boko Haram suppliers

    The Borno Command, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), says it has seized about 1, 000 litres of petrol from suspected ‘Boko Haram’ fuel suppliers in the state.

    The Commandant of the corps, Mr Ibrahim Abdullahi, made the disclosure in Maiduguri on Wednesday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

    Abdullahi said that the products were recovered by the Anti-Vandalisation Unit of the command during routine patrol at Ngom village in Mafa Local Government Area of the state.

    He said that the products were packed into 49 jerry cans and abandoned by suspected insurgents’ fuel suppliers on Mafa-Dikwa Highway.

    Abdullahi said that the suspects abandoned the products and took to their heels on sighting the NSCDC’s patrol team.

    “The products were filled into jerry cans and concealed in sacks.

    ‘‘Our men also recovered food items and other commodities such as soap, pomade, sugar, gari, cigarettes and seasoning.

    “The products were concealed in sacks to avoid trapping,” he said.

    The commandant disclosed that the command had also arrested two persons with 30 jerry cans of petrol and seized another six jerry cans of the products from profiteers in Maiduguri.

    NSCDC alerts Borno residents on robbery, kidnapping cases

    The spate of armed robbery and kidnapping by some tricycle operators in the state has been decried on Monday  by the Borno Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

    The Commandant of the corps in the state, Mr Ibrahim Abdullahi, disclosed this in an interview with journalists in Maiduguri.

    Abdullahi said intelligence report from his personnel revealed that certain gang of individuals were hiding under the guise of tricycle operators to perpetrate all sort of crimes.

    “We have received about seven complaints from several individuals on how tricycle operators robbed them with dangerous weapons at different locations.

    “First was one Abdulkadir Bashir who came to the command on Tuesday, last week and reported that some tricycle operators almost lynched him and took his phones, wallet and money.

    “The culprits normally operates around 9:30 p.m. before the curfew time when people are rushing to go back home.

    “The last complaint was from one Malam Tukur Mobar, a 45-year-old who closed his shop and was kidnapped and taken to Bulumkutu but was later released when he paid some certain money,’’ he said.

    He added that the culprits always operated with tricycles that have no union registration and number plates so that they cannot be identified.

    “Some of them even use yellow cellotape to hide their union and plate numbers to avoid any trace.

    “It is in line with this ugly trend that the command deems it fit to call the attention of residents in the state to be security conscious.

    “People must always look out for tricycles with proper registration.

    “We are making effort to bring the culprits to book hence the need to imform the people to be cautious of such persons,” said Abdullahi.

    The Nigeria Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Borno on Wednesday arrested five Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) for allegedly vandalising and stealing camp structures.

    The state NSCDC Commandant, Mr Ibrahim Abdullahi, who made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Maiduguri, said the suspects were arrested in Bakassi camp.

    According to him, items recovered from the suspects include windows, blends, noggin roofs, pipes and rubbers, among others.

    “The IDPs are now causing more havoc by vandalising the hard-earned structure that the government put in place.

    “There are bad eggs among the IDPs who can do anything to get money.

    “Some of them engage in prostitution and sexual abuses while some are into illicit hard drug use.

    “The Command warned the culprits to desist from such crimes or face the full wrath of the law,” he said.

    The Borno command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) said on Tuesday that it had arrested four butchers for allegedly selling the meat of dead animals to Maiduguri residents.

    State Commandant of Corps, Mr Ibrahim Abdullahi, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the suspects, who had confessed to committing the crime, were arrested at the Murtala Square area in the state capital.

    “The culprits have been selling dead livestock to innocent unsuspecting people.

    “They normally go around and pick dead animals from the outskirt of the town and sell same to the public.

    “Some of these animals died from tuberculosis, bacterial pneumonia or even brucellosis, which can pose dangerous health challenges when consumed.

    “Even if you have the license to operate in an abattoir, the veterinary doctors must ascertain that the animals are safe for human consumption.

    Abdullahi said that when the chairman of the butchers association in Borno was contacted he said none of the culprits was a registered member of his association.

    He therefore advised people to be vigilant and wary of patronizing road side meat sellers.
