Ondo poll: PDP governors’ forum urges INEC to be fair

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to direct Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to be fair in the conduct of forthcoming Ondo governorship election.

In a statement by its Secretary, Patrick Okon, on Monday in Abuja, the forum also called for overhaul of the commission.

It alleged that the All Progressives Congress (APC), with the help of INEC, was planning to rig the poll.

“We are aware of the plan of APC to get Ondo state by all means, including enlisting the assistance of INEC.

“We are warning that we will not fold our arms to watch this impunity and day-time robbery.

“INEC is an umpire and should play its role very well so that the electorate will have confidence in it.

“From the way things are going, the people are already losing confidence in the commission,’’ it said.

The forum also called on INEC to stick to its electoral mandate and should not subvert the law of the land.

“INEC should conduct itself very well in this forthcoming Ondo state governorship election to avoid a repeat of what happened in Edo election.”

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that INEC on Thursday cleared Mr Jimoh Ibrahim nominated by disputed National Chairman of PDP, Sen. Ali Modu Sheriff’s faction, as the party’s candidate for the election.

It based its action on a court order, which declared Ibrahim as the candidate of the party for the poll.

The development jolted majority of members of the party, who had in a primary supervised by INEC as provided in the Electoral Act, elected Mr Eyitayo Jegede as candidate for the election.

Jegede’s nomination was submitted by Sen. Ahmed Makarfi-led National Caretaker Committee of the party.

However, the caretaker committee has the Court of Appeal to reverse the decision of High Court on the issue. Hearing on the matter has been fixed for Tuesday and Wednesday in Abuja.

Jimoh Ibrahim blasts Mimiko over protest

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) recognized People’s Democratic Party’s governorship candidate in next month’s election in Ondo State, Mr. Jimoh Ibrahim, faulted Friday’s protest in the state as the handiwork to Governor Olusegun Mimiko.

Youths and okada riders in Akure, the state capital and Ondo had Friday shut down the two towns for several hours to show their displeasure at the decision of the INEC to substitute the name of Mr.Eyitayo Jegede with that of Jimoh as the party’s candidate.

Jegede belongs to the Ahmed Makarfi faction of the    party while Ibrahim is of the Alo Modu Sheriff faction.

Ibrahim in a statement entitled ‘Tyre Burning for Sympathy’ and personally signed by him said the protest had Mimiko’s signature all over it.

He alleged that the governor way back in 2009 ‘deceived’ the election petition tribunal in the state that “there were security issues in the state, leading to the cancellation of results in eight out of 18 local governments of the state.”

He added: “Mimiko called on the drivers’ union in the state, whose chairman is his relative, to gather disposed tyres across the state and burn them so as to show that there are security challenges in Akure town.

“While the tyres were burning, school children were attending their classes. Banks were opened, market women and traders were carrying on their economic activities, courts were sitting and more tyres were burning by the side of the road.

“Regrettably, Mimiko’s orthodoxy has played out to be fake, empty and unbecoming of a person that occupies the position of the governor of a state .

“This tyre burning for sympathy will not work as Ondo State remains peaceful.”

PDP: Sheriff raises hope on reconciliation

Factional National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Ali Modu Sheriff has expressed the willingness to join others in resolving the leadership crisis in the opposition party.n

At a media briefing in Abuja Thursday night, Sheriff said his camp would be nominating 14 members that would hold discussions with the Caretaker Committee headed by Senator Ahmed Makarfi.

“It is true that we agreed to find a lasting solution to the crisis. I was out of the country and that is why I did not go with Makarfi to meet with members of the National Assembly.

“We are going to set up a 28-man committee to prepare a way forward. The committee will be inaugurated on Tuesday.

“We are compiling the list. It is true that we have reached understanding but there is no position paper from anywhere.

“We must allow people to choose their leaders. We will not deviate from what the common man wants us to do,” he said.

Sheriff attributed the crisis in the PDP to lack of internal democracy, saying what was happening was a lesson for everybody to learn.

“We must allow people and party owners from the ward level, to choose their leaders.

“We are doing what the common man wants us to do and we will not deviate from that,” he added.

He blamed the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT) for the lingering crisis, saying that the BoT had taken sides with the Makarfi committee in the crisis.

According to him, the BoT members should not take position on any matter; “If there is a problem they should call everybody and resolve it”.

“When we are constituting our committee, we can pick from the BoT. Every interest will be represented”.

Sheriff insisted that Mr. Jimoh Ibrahim remained the governorship candidate of the PDP in Ondo state. The candidate presented by the Makarfi committee is the one recognized by INEC.

“As a party, we have taken our decision, we have chosen Jimoh Ibrahim as our candidate and whatever the law says we would follow it. We are products of the rule of law”, he said.

  • Alleged diversion of aviation funds: Airline, bank disagree‎

Alleged diversion of aviation funds: Airline, bank disagree‎

There was a mild drama at the ongoing investigation of alleged diversion of N500 billion intervention funds for aviation and power sectors in the Senate Wednesday.

Chairman of NICON Group of Companies, Mr. Jimoh Ibrahim, flatly denied allegation of diversion of N35 billion out of the N500 billion said to have been released by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to the moribund Air Nigeria.

The United Bank for Africa (UBA) through which the fund was paid however faulted Ibrahim’s claim.

Mr. Ibrahim who appeared before the Senate Committee on Aviation Wednesday insisted that Air Nigeria, like others, did not receive any fund.

He noted that when he took over Virgin Nigeria, it left a debt of $250 million which he said was offset through assets from his groups of companies.

He said that NICON group, to which Air Nigeria belonged, approached UBA which was also Virgin Nigeria’s banker to secure a loan of N35.5 billion which the bank obtained from the Bank of Industry (BOI).

He added that the airline secured another $40 million loan from the Afrexim Bank, which he claimed had been fully paid back.

Ibrahim noted that he ran the airline for only two years before it was grounded by the regulatory agencies.
He further claimed that he bought the airline from UBA Capital, an arm of the United Bank for Africa and sold back the airline to the agency with all its assets and liabilities.

He said that the defunct Virgin Nigeria was owned by two categories of people which he grouped into Category A and Category B.

Category A, he said, comprised the original owner, Richard Branson, whom he said had all the powers while category B consisted of a group of Nigerian investors who owned 49 per cent of the shares.

He said Branson offered the shares to investors at $1 per one as he listed institutional investors in the company in Nigeria to include Wema Securities.

He explained that with the agreement of all involved, his group of companies bought the airline 100 per cent.

Ibrahim claimed that following a meeting held on the indebtedness of Virgin Nigeria prior to its acquisition, he sought a loan through its banker from UBA which the bank took from the intervention fund.

He insisted that he never had access to the intervention fund neither did he apply to CBN, the custodian of the fund for any loan.

Ibrahim who described as unwarranted an allegation that he obtained N35 billion from BOI, noted that it was not his business to bother where UBA obtained loan for his airline.

He said, “If UBA borrowed from BoI, how that concerns Air Nigeria? Virgin Nigeria didn’t apply to BoI. It gave fund and UBA gave loans to Air Nigeria.”

The Group General Manager of UBA, Samuel Adikamkwu, who ‎represented the bank, reminded Ibrahim of how Air Nigeria wrote an application for N41.5 billion loan‎.

He said that UBA was only able to secure N35.5 billion from BoI, which repayment he said was extended for a period of 15 years with the intention to free the fund for the airline’s meaningful use.

Adikamkwu‎ said: “He (Ibrahim) kept on saying that he was not part of the intervention from Air Nigeria. He knows that Virgin/Air Nigeria was owing UBA. I showed a letter from your company asking us to apply for this intervention fund.

“And when that money came, you were given a different offer letter elongating your payment period to 15 years and also reducing the rate of interest.

“That freed your working capital, giving you enough room to operate than if you were paying under the old terms. I know it’s a harsh environment but you cannot tell me that the airline did not benefit.”‎

However, the committee’s co-chairman, Senator Chukwuka Utazi, lamented that the money that was meant to enhance the effectiveness of the airlines was hijacked by banks which he accused of using only the aviation sector to get the fund.

He said: This money didn’t get to any airline but is in coffers of the banks. The airlines are on oxygen. They only used the aviation to get such loans and servicing it while the aviation industry is suffocating. Nigerians have to go to Ghana to board British Airways because it is cheaper from there. When you are on board, you have to send a message to your family that you may see me again but if not, that is it.

“Simple, simple things that we need to put in airports are not there. Nigeria is shortchanged. We are confused but the veil has been lifted. When we are through with our report, this is my discovery of what happened, CBN collected money, it is being serviced but the airlines are not serviced,” he lamented.

Also speaking, a member of the committee, Senator Adesoji Akanbi, regretted that both the CBN and commercial banks have robbed the airlines of the opportunity to enjoy the intervention fund meant for their use.

“The money didn’t get to aviation sector. The airlines have not enjoyed the intervention fund. CBN and banks are not helping matters. It is banks that are owing the sector and not the sector owing banks,” Akanbi said.
