Obaseki demolishes APC chieftain multi-million shopping complex

    …Traders demand refund

A shopping complex belonging to a chieftain of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Edo State, Chief Osamede Adun popularly known as Bob Izua has been demolished on the orders of Governor Godwin Obaseki.

The shopping complex which has 218 stores was built along mission road.

Officials of the Edo state government carried out the demolition exercise at about 11:00 p.m Wednesday night 11:00 p.m Wednesday night.

Several traders who had secured stores at the shopping complex were perplexed at the action of Governor Obaseki.

The traders said they paid as much as between N300,000 and N500,000 including N100,000 paid as ‘kola’ for government officials.

It was gathered that ‘stop work’ notice was placed on the building last week and the building sealed even when some traders were already planning to move in.

A trader who has paid for shop at the complex who gave his name as Eze said he paid N400,000 and N100,000 as kola for a shop.

He said the traders would meet with Chief Adun to refund their money to them.

Explaining why the shopping complex was demolished, Governor Obaseki who spoke through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. John Mayaki, the action was to show his commitment to enforcing all physical and town planning laws in the state.

Governor Obaseki stated that he want to restore integrity to the environment’s masterplan.

He said the demolished structure was at variance with what was approved adding that notices were served for the APC chieftain to stop work.

    The demolished shopping complex

Obaseki said Chief Adun sought approval for 30 shops with adequate allowances for space and internal staircases but a structure with over 150 shops and external staircases without provision for parking was erected.

He stated that the structure constituted a breach of the property and to all known town planning laws and even to the plan, which was submitted for approval.

Nobody is above the law, neither is anyone’s interest bigger than the public’s interest. No parking space was provided for owners of the would-be shops at the property. The property is being constructed at the heart of the city and shoppers and shop owners will have to park by the roadside and that can cause congestion on the roads.

“In specific terms, Mayaki revealed: “the plan, for which the owner sought approval, provided for 30 shops with adequate allowances for space and internal staircases, but what Edo people later discovered was a structure with 150 shops and external staircases, just as there was no provision for parking.

“I am also glad to report to you that the government exists for the good and interest of the public and that is the interest the administration of Governor Godwin Obaseki is serving. The public is even happier that the government is creating the right of way for them,” he further explained.

On his part, Chief Adun said he bought the land from three families and got approval from the state government to commence the building.

Chief Adun said he sold part of the land to the state government for N135m while displaying documents of how he acquired the property.

His words: “The building was approved. Do you do demolition at night? My son who went there to remove some things but was arrested.

I am the leader of APC in this state. The land was not acquired illegally. I borrowed N750,000, 000 to build that house. I also sold my house in the US to build the house. The government should tell me how they want me to build it and not for them to take the land.

Some of the traders in a protest march said they want their money to be refunded.

The spokesman for the traders, Celestine Okoro said, “In December last year (2016), we made an advance payment for 2017. I have two stores there. Depending on the size of the store, some persons paid N200,000, some paid N150,000. The least amount is for those paying for attachments, which cost N70,000.

“All of us have paid for 2017‎. In January, we were informed by the landlord that he wants to demolish the building and replace it with a standard one. When the building got to the lintel level, he demanded another payment, which called ‘kola money,’‎ or consultation fee.

“The old tenants paid N100,000 while the new ones paid N120,000. We also paid an extra N175,000 or N400,000 for seven months‎, depending on the size.

“Surprisingly, the governor came last week and sealed the place. Since then, we have been hanging around to hear from him (governor). But we were kept in the dark. We did not know what our fate was until this morning ‎(Thursday) when the building was demolished.”

Obaseki seeks to strengthen state’s judicial system

Gov. Godwin Obaseki of Edo said no meaningful development would be achieved in the state without strengthening the judiciary.

Mr John Mayaki, the Chief Press Secretary to the governor said in a statement on Saturday in Benin that Obasaki made the remark at a workshop on judiciary held in Benin.

According to Obaseki, strengthening the judiciary is sine qua non for economic development.

He said “we cannot pursue the goals we have set for ourselves without strengthening the administration of the judiciary.

“Repositioning Edo and make it an economic hub will be difficult if we do not have
legal system to protect property right and ensure contracts and things the law can do for us.”

The governor added that the state would uphold the independence of the judiciary as evidenced in the over 600 per cent increment in 2017 appropriation bill for the sector.

He explained that the essence of the judiciary workshop was to acknowledge the challenges confronting the sector in the state and to proffer solutions to them and come up with a master plan.

Mayaki stated that Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Femi Falana, at the workshop, with the theme “State of the Judiciary and the Administration of Justice in Edo
State” advocated proper remuneration for judicial workers to build confidence in the nation’s judicial system.

Falana said election petition cases should be handled by justices of the various High Courts in states.

He said restricting the functions of state chief judges to only administrative functions was unhealthy for the system.

Also, a former governor of Edo, Prof. Osariemen Osunbor, said there was need for government to publicise the revised laws of the state.

Osunbor said it would keep the people abreast with the judicial system.

    Obaseki appoints SSG, Spokesman

Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo state on Monday in Benin announced the appointment of Mr Osarodion Ogie as the Secretary to the State Government.

Also appointed were Mr Taiwo Akerele as Chief of Staff and Mr John Mayaki as interim Chief Press Secretary.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Obaseki had before making the announcement, met with the state Head of Service and Permanent Secretaries.

He directed the permanent secretaries to take full charge of the affairs of their ministries, pending appointment of commissioners.

The governor solicited for maximum cooperation from the civil service to enable him discharge his mandate effectively.

He expressed confidence in the civil service, and pledged that his administration would build a stronger, vibrant, trusted, competent and reliable workforce to meet the challenges ahead.

“I have no doubt about the capacity of the civil service, but we will also need to clear the clog on the wheel of progress,” he added.

The governor said the administration would re-evaluate the recruitment process into the service to ensure that merit and objectivity were not compromised.

He promised to study the report of his transition committee alongside that submitted by the permanent secretaries, before setting up a policy group to outline specific programmes for the administration.

Obaseki noted that the state would not afford a government unable to create value across board.

He assured the people of Edo, that he would be a listening governor, who discharges his responsibilities firmly and professionally.

The governor assured that the administration would be fair to all, and would sanction any civil servant found wanting.

“Edo PDP smarting from political anxiety disorder”

    • Hails Odubu, Osunbor, Esele, Agbomhere others

The Edo State Chapter of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) may have been smarting from “political anxiety disorder” since the peaceful, free and fair primary election of the All Progressives Congress (APC) which they had waited to benefit from but were soon disappointed, a statement endorsed by the Executive Director Media and Public Affairs, Governor’s Office said on Wednesday.

It said, “The PDP thought they would reap from unresolved skirmishes resulting from the delegate elections of the APC but soon discovered that what unites the party is far greater than what divides. This is the disappointment convulsing the PDP and reeling it in political anxiety disorder.”

The signed by Mr. John Mayaki said: “All our aspirants are the party men who know that it’s hard to oppose your own party’s nominee – in this case – the 2016 Governorship candidate of the APC – especially a well-prepared one at that.

“I want to appreciate those who worsened their insomnia  – the State Deputy Governor, Dr. Pius Odubu – deserves great credit for his principled political stand for the party. Himself and other party luminaries who contested the primary election and bought into the result of the election and understand that they need to disappoint those who thought they would take their political careers to the dogs.

“I commend Prof. Oserheimen Osunbor once more – just as Comrade Peter Esele and Chief Blessing Agbomhere. What about Engr. Chris Ogiemwonyi and Bar. Kenneth Imansuagbon among others who sent out a strong signal about their genuine resolve to seek inclusion rather than division. They all acted sooner with great principle on a major moment, no one should miss – for the sake of the party”.

“They have moved on”, Mayaki said. “This is in the spirit of equanimity and sportsmanship – this is remarkable and commendable. I believe their actions will advance the values of the party and the government of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, who would needlessly alienate anyone – and the man who is now the face of the party in the state, Mr. Godwin Obaseki – who openly courted them and all they represent.

“These are men who have staked their time, resources and connections for the party that has better ideas for Edo people and the future of Nigerians just as they know how healthy and right for them to look beyond today, into the future – as patriotic and productive citizens.

“Of course, this is why the PDP is at a fix and its defenders irritate more than the party itself. People who are professional apologists for the atrocious things that brought this country to her knees, not until it was rescued from them. Today, they want to reap where they have not sown and this is the anxiety causing them political disorder – by September 10, a well-aimed kick in PDP’s rear end would have had a lasting rest,” Mayaki said.

  • Edo APC, aspirants need to run scared, Mayaki warns

Edo APC, aspirants need to run scared, Mayaki warns

As the Governorship primary elections of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo state is around the corner, the party “needs to run scared and eschew politics of blackmail, bitterness and internal bickering in other to avoid political bruises into the general elections”, the Executive Director, Media and Public Affairs to Edo State Governor, Mr. John Mayaki has warned

Mayaki said the most crucial thinking of every progressive is to have an APC successor to the Comrade Governor, Mr. Adams Oshiomhole who is aiming to assail an opposition candidate because, “I have no doubt the party’s primary contests would yield a pretty good sense of who the nominee will end up to be”.

According to Mayaki, “The Comrade Governor has been very respectful of all the aspirants, while placing the interest of the party first. He is careful not to put his thumb on the scale, but at some point, the verdict is the verdict and that point is almost certainly here.

“I expect Mr. Governor to formally stump and aggressively campaign for the party’s nominee among the aspirants, starting with a formal endorsement of the nominee’s candidacy immediately after the primary but not after blackmailing him”.

The Spokesman said that the Governor, who sees an APC successor as critical to his legacy, is impatient to begin campaigning. He said, “Mr. Governor is taking nothing for granted”.

“I want us to run scared the whole time as a party because we have a general election ahead of us. It is novel that a second-term Governor enjoys the popularity to be a potent force on the campaign trail, and equally have an eye on who succeeds him.”

Mr. Governor is particularly enthusiastic, Mayaki said, about taking on the opposition party and whoever their presumptive candidate would be.

Continuing, Mayaki said, “He (the Governor) has indicated he wants to spend a lot of time on the campaign trail, so when it’s time to do that, we’ll all go out guns ablazing.

“We should begin to actively think through how to bring everyone together in the party; what works for the would-be party nominee, what works for the Governor, and how to utilize his strengths and his appeal.

“A would-be nominee will earn Governor Oshiomhole’s endorsement and his active participation in the campaigns because he is particularly strong at making the economic argument for the party’s candidate. Besides, his position in the party and popularity made him ideally suited to counter any opposition.

“No one really rewards politicians fighting each other in a general election”, Mayaki said. “The party needs to run scared. The party is full of attack dogs. Mr. Governor needs the support of everyone, including the aspirants having made us feel better about our economic future.”
