  • Abia police chief: strategies on security yielding positive results

    The Commissioner of Police (CP) in Abia, Mr Leye Oyebade said the strategies introduced to combat crime and criminality in the state was yielding positive results.

    He said this when he briefed newsmen at the Police Officers Mess in Umuahia on activities and achievements recorded by the police command in the state.

    He said the command arrested 30 criminal suspects in connection with kidnapping, armed robbery, car snatching, cultism and other security breaches in different parts of the state.

    He restated the command’s commitment to crime reduction, adding that “my officers and men are prepared to make Abia uninhabitable for hoodlums.

    “We have recorded substantial successes and reduction in crime wave and that is because of the different proactive measures and strategies we have put in place.”

    The police boss attributed the successes recorded to cooperation from the public, saying “they have been assisting us with useful information.

    “But I am using this opportunity to appeal to great people of Abia not to rest on their oars; they should continue to volunteer information to us to enable us to serve them well.”

    The list of suspects included Chigozie Akpara, Ndubuisis Nwoko and Nnamdi Kanu, said to have broken into Oza Secondary School, Asa, where they allegedly carted away eight computer sets donated to the school by the Niger Delta Development Commission.

    Others were Sunday Agu and Chinagorom Nwaobwugwu, allegedly arrested in possession of three stolen 200-AMP trailer batteries.

    Some of the items recovered from the suspects included pistols, double-barrel guns, AK47 rifles and other dangerous weapons.

    Abia: CP moves to curb unregistered security outfits

    Abia Police Command will put a check on the proliferation of unregistered security outfits in the state, the Commissioner of Police, Mr Leye Oyebade, has promised.

    Oyebade made the promise on Wednesday in Umuahia while briefing newsmen on efforts being made by the command to reduce crime in the state.

    He said that the operations of unregistered security outfits constituted a breach of the law.

    He urged the people behind such outfits to disband them or they would be made to face the full weight of the law.

    He said, “Setting up parallel security organisations when there are existing ones like the Police, Army, Navy, Air Force, civil defence, among others, is criminal.

    “The Abia command is against such organisations and is ready to deal decisively with them.’’

    The CP specifically cited the unlawful activities of an organisation, known as “BBS” in the state, allegedly trending in the social media.

    In another development, Oyebade said the command had busted two different suspected kidnap syndicates in Aba, the commercial nerve centre of the state.

    He said that his men arrested one Samuel Akoma from Umuako-Obohia Ibere in Ikwuano council area and Kenneth Ananaba from Ugwunagbo.

    He said the two men were arrested in a hotel in Aba in connection with the kidnap of one Kelvin Wogu.

    He said the suspected kidnappers abducted Wogu while he was driving his Toyota Highlander SUV jeep on Omenazu Street, Aba.

    The CP said the suspects had confessed to the crime and that they collected N3 million ransom from the victim before he was released.

    He said the confession by the suspects led to the arrest of another member of the syndicate, Goodluck Sunday in his Umuobi Ukpakiri Village in Obingwa council area.

    He gave a list of the items recovered from the gang to include a Mitsubishi SUV with Reg. No. Abia: UMA 103 SW and the stolen Toyota Highlander.

    Oyebade also announced the arrest of an armed robbery suspect, one Obioma Onwuchekwa of Umuozuo Village in Osisioma council area of the state.

    He said the suspect, who had been on the police wanted list since April after a robbery operation in Aba, was caught in Calabar.

    According to him, the suspect was arrested at the Calabar office of the Federal Road Safety Commission, while attempting to re-register a Toyota Highlander SUV jeep, with an initial registration number.

    Oyebade said that further investigation showed that the vehicle was snatched from its owner, one Jeff Omadewu, in Aba.

    Police arrests suspected killers of ‘Bakassi’ men – Commissioner

    The Commissioner of Police in Abia, Mr Leye Oyebade, says the command has arrested three kidnap suspects involved in the gruesome killing of four members of the state vigilante group known as Bakassi in Aba.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the deceased were reportedly attacked by the assailants, who allegedly ambushed them on Aba-Owerri Road around 4 p.m. in February.

    The Bakassi men were said to be returning to their office in their operational van when the hoodlums reportedly opened fire on them, killing three of them on the spot, while the fourth person died later in the hospital.

    The vigilance group allegedly drew the ire of the hoodlums, after it reportedly foiled their attempt to kidnap a prominent businessman in the city.

    Oyebade told newsmen in his office in Umuahia, that two of the suspects — Chimezie Ezeigbo, alias ‘landlord’, and Emeka Ukaegbu, alias ‘smallpin’ — were arrested while guarding a kidnap victim, one Christopher Duru.

    Oyebade said Duru, a resident of World Bank Estate, Aba, was kidnapped on March 17 but rescued by operatives from Ndiegoro Divisional Police Station and the Aba Area Police Command.

    He said the suspects, which included one Julius Nnachi of Amaetiti Ekoli in Ebonyi, had confessed to the crime.

    The police commissioner said his men recovered one Pump Action Rifle, one English-made Pistol, seven live cartridges, one .9 mm live ammunition and five cellphones from the suspects.

    The command, he said, also arrested a Lagos-based shoe trader, Godswill Nwokoh, 51, for allegedly defiling a 12-year-old boy in a guest house in Aba.

    The boy, a Junior Secondary School 1 student, said that he was lured into the guest house by Nwokoh, who woke him up in the night and allegedly “used” him.

    He said that Nwokoh muffled his mouth with his hands and prevented him from screaming during the act.

    Nwokoh, however, denied the allegation in an interview with newsmen, saying he only allowed the boy to spend the night in his room, after he allegedly strayed from his parents”’ home in Aba.

    Nwokoh, who said he usually came to buy Aba-made shoes and belts, said he was in the room with the boy and his friend as well as his son, who accompanied him on the trip from Lagos.

    The police commissioner later gave a breakdown of arrests made by the command in the last eight months.

    According to him, 134 persons were arrested for different criminal offences, ranging from armed robbery to kidnapping, car-snatching, rape, murder, pipeline vandalism, cultism and child-trafficking, among others.

    Oyebade said the command recovered 32 arms, 188 ammunition, 40 vehicles, 15 motorcycles/tricycles and rescued 15 kidnap victims.

    The rescued victims included 90-year-old Pa Jeremaiah Adindu, the father of Mr Godwin Adindu, the former Chief Press Secretary to Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu.

    He said the suspects would be arraigned at the end of the investigations.

    Meanwhile, Oyebade said that the command would soon inaugurate a crack team known as Tactical Response Squad, currently undergoing special training in combating heinous crimes.

    He said the squad, to be deployed in Umuahia and Aba, would be unveiled at the end of the training and posted to areas notorious for heinous crimes, such as kidnapping and armed robbery.

    The police commissioner said that the governor had promised to support the command with the necessary logistics that would enable it to commence operations with ease.

    He appealed to members of the public to assist the police with useful information that would help them to discharge their mandate of protecting lives and property.

    Oyebade said the state government had announced a N1 million reward for any informant that assisted the police to arrest notorious criminal suspects in the state.

    Police recover foreign currencies, stolen vehicle in Aba

    Policemen from the Abayi Division and the Police Mobile Force 55, Aba, have arrested a suspect, Obinna Echerem following the recovery of a Toyota Corolla vehicle with registration number plate, Bayelsa, BYSJ-07-A and cash in assorted foreign currencies, suspected to have been stolen.

    Police sources told journalists that Echerem was arrested at Tonimas Junction on the Aba –Port Harcourt expressway when he could not explain how he came about the Toyota Corolla car and the assorted foreign currencies in his possession.

    Commissioner of Police, Mr Leye Oyebade, who confirmed the arrest, stated that the suspect failed to give a satisfactory account of items but offered two Thousand Thailand Baht currencies to bribe the Police team.

    Oyebade, who added the suspect would be arraigned as soon as investigations are concluded, listed the foreign currencies recovered from Echerem to include; Ghanaian Cedi, US Dollars, French Franc, Thailand Baht and United Arab Emirates Dirham.

    Soldiers nab two suspected robbers

    Soldiers of the 14 Brigade, Ohafia, Abia State, on Wednesday arrested two suspected robbers who have been terrorising motorists along Opobo –Azumini highway.
     
    The Nation gathered that the robbery suspects; Victor John and Nsikak Johnson, were nabbed by soldiers at a checkpoint along Azumini road and handed over to the Abia State Police command.
     
    Abia State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Leye Oyebade confirmed the handover of the suspects to the Police.
     
    Oyebade said: “The robust synergy of the Abia State Police Command with other sister agencies paid off, when officers of the Nigerian Army, 14 Brigade, Ohafia, on checkpoint at Azumini Road in Ukwa East, arrested the suspects and handed over to the operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping section of the State Criminal and Intelligence Department. They confessed to the crime and effort is being intensified to arrest other members of their gang.”
     
    The CP added that the suspects are among notorious criminals who have been robbing motorists along Azumini highway and listed items recovered from them to include a locally made single barrel pistol, two live cartridges and a small bag.

    Police rescue abducted baby in Umuahia

    The Commissioner of Police in Abia, Mr Leye Oyebade on Wednesday said that men of the command had rescued a 15-month-old baby girl allegedly stolen from her mother.

    Oyebade, who said this while briefing newsmen on some of the major achievements of the command, noted that the baby was stolen on Monday in Umuahia.

    He said that the suspected abductors, identified as Lawan Nuhu and Lawal Ahmed, took away the little Chinonye after drugging her mother, Mrs Chioma Chijindu at their residence at No. 8 Ohafia Street, Umuahia.

    He said that the suspects were arrested following a tip off, while N170,000 cash and  a 307 Peugeot car with Reg. No. AZ 166 KWL, were recovered from them.

    “During investigation, the suspects confessed that they drugged the baby’s mother before escaping with the baby,” Oyebade said.

    He warned parents to be vigilant about the activities of their neighbours and strangers in their areas.

    The police commissioner also said that no fewer than 12 other people were arrested in connection with alleged criminal activities, including vandalism, armed robbery and car snatching.

    According to him, three suspected vandals, identified as Obirinachi Chijioke, Chigoziem Okereke

    and Ikemsinachi Okereke, were arrested in Obikabia in Obingwa Local Government Area, following a distress call from a resident.

    Oyebade said that they were arrested while they were allegedly vandalising electricity transformer belonging to the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company.

    “My men moved in and arrested the three suspects but two escaped,’’.

    According to him, the police are on the trail of two other suspects still at large.

    He said that the police had also arrested Joseph Godwin, who resides at Ogwo Road, off Ohanku Road, Aba, for allegedly killing his neighbour, Joel Effiong, a businessman in Aba on August 31.

    He said that all the suspects currently in police custody would be charged to court at the end of ongoing investigations by the police.

    Oyebade said that the command also arrested Ugorji Uche and Okoronkwo Chibuike, natives of Atani in Arochukwu, for allegedly stealing a Mitsubushi L300 bus with Reg. No. ATN 607 ZK.

    He said that the vehicle belonged to Jeremiah Igwe of Obosi in Anambra state, adding that the suspects had been transferred to Anambra state police command for further action.

    The commissioner of police expressed delight over the exploit of his men and commended residents of the state for assisting the command with useful information.

    He promised that the command would not rest on its oars until crime and criminality had been “reduced to the barest minimum in the state’’.

    “This is the reason my men have been working round the clock to checkmate the activities of criminals in the state,” Oyebade said.

    He listed items recovered from the suspects to include different kinds of arms and ammunition, electronic gadgets such as plasma television sets, tricycles and weeds suspected to be Indian hemp.

    Family seeks justice over gruesome murder of man

    The family of a slain 38-year-old commercial driver, Wasiu Fasasi, has urged security agencies to fish out his killers and prosecute them.

    Fasasi was allegedly butchered by yet to be identified persons shortly after he went out to meet some unknown friends on May 11, 2016.

    The incident happened in the Konto area of Ayete community in Ibarapa Local Government Area of Oyo State.

    It was learnt that the deceased was relaxing at home with his family when he suddenly received a call on his mobile phone at about 5 pm.

    He was said to have told his wife that he was going out to see some friends for an important meeting at Konto near Ayete community in Ibarapa.

    The Nation gathered that he did not disclose to his wife the identity of his ‘friends’ and their meeting place.

    A search party was launched for him when his pregnant wife, Risikat, raised the alarm several hours after he did not return home or answer phone calls, only to allegedly discover his mutilated body by the roadside with his motorcycle and GSM phone intact.

    The incident was reported to Ayete Police Division, while the case has since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Iyaganku, Ibadan, for proper investigation.

    One of his brothers, Mr. Ayandele Fasasi, said: “The gruesome death of my younger brother has brought untold grief not only to me but our entire family. His death is unfortunate because he was the one taking care of our 80-year-old father in the village.

    “His mobile phone’s call log has been obtained, but no arrest has been made so far by the police. Therefore, I want to urge all security agencies to unravel his killers and prosecute them in the interest of justice, so his death would not be in vain.”

    The father of three has since been buried in Ayete, while the state Commissioner for Police, Mr. Leye Oyebade, has promised that his killers would be arrested.

    Oyo Police spokesman, Mr. Adekunle Ajisebutu, was not available for comments at press time as he did not answer his call or return a text message forwarded to his mobile phone by our correspondent.

    Lover plans to use girl, 17, for money ritual

    A 17-year old Senior Secondary School (SSS) 2 student, Ruth Alabi narrowly escaped been killed for money ritual when her boy friend lured her to the herbalist residence at Olodo area of Ibadan before she was rescued by vigilante men .

    Ruth Alabi who claimed that she was an SS2 student at an undisclosed school in Abuja said she came to spend the Easter holiday with her mother in Ibadan when the incident occurred.

    Her boy friend, Chubuike Omigbo, 33 who used to sell building materials at the Iwo Road area of Ibadan was arrested and paraded alongside the herbalist, Oladimeji Babatunde Ajala, 37 by the state police Command on Friday.

    The state Commissioner of Police (CP), Mr Leye Oyebade who briefed newsmen on the incident at the state Police headquarters, Eleyele, Ibadan told journalists that the suspects had planned to use the girl for money making ritual before the evil planned was thwarted by the police.

    The CP noted that the suspects were arrested following a tip-off by a strategic partner when the duo were planning to use the girl for money ritual.

    He said ” the victim’s boyfriend, Chibuike, had lured her to the herbalist’s residence at No5, Galilee street, Olodo area of the state for the purpose of the ritual.

    “Luck, however ran out on them when their evil plan was uncovered through their conversation which was overheard by an eavesdropper. The suspects confessed to being fraudsters and that they had defrauded many innocent victims in the past,” the CP said.

    The police also recovered a black Nissan Altima with registration No. APP 627 CA, which the police said was bought with the proceeds from illegal business.

    Other items recovered from the suspects were some criminal charms, one statute in the image of Jesus, two other statutes and broken bottles spread on a mat.

    Answering questions from newsmen, the victim, Ruth Alabi who was accompanied by her mother said she had been going out with her boyfriend in the past four months until the incident occurred.

    According to her, they usually meet in front of Tantalizer before they  proceed to hotel where they have fun.

    “But the day this incident happened, Easter day, my boyfriend came with two of his friends and he asked me to enter a vehicle which they brought and they took me to a hotel where I was asked what will I drink. I told him that I will take malt drink, but he insisted I should take stout. So, I took a small bottle of stout. At a point, one of his  friends said I should come with him into a hotel room and there he told me he wants to have sex with me. I was uncomfortable with that, wondering how could that be. So, I had to lie that I was in my menstrual cycle.   

    After, my boyfriend said I should accompany him to another place, but I told him its already dark, that my mother has been calling my phone and that I will like to return home. He continued to pester me, until he took me to the place , and when we got to a place, he was calling some of his friends and I was afraid because it was already 10pm. That was all I know.”

    The victim was said to have slumped on their way to the residence of the herbalist and this attracted vigilante men who later called the police.

    When the police came, Ruth Alabi was rushed to a nearby hospital in an unconscious state, before she was revived.

    While in the hospital, the girl said  medical examination revealed that the stout she drank was laced with drugs.

    Speaking with journalists, the two suspects  denied the plan to use the girl for ritual .
