  • WAEC will be 100% technology driven in 2018 – HNO

WAEC will be 100% technology driven in 2018 – HNO

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) says it will sensitise and train its workforce on key areas of technology deployment in order to improve its operations in 2018.

The council’s Head, National Office (HNO), Mr Olu Adenipekun disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Lagos.

According to him, the council has organised series of retreats for both management staff and the workforce in preparatory to deploy technology in its operations.

“We have worked hard in sensitising the workforce of the council and prepare their minds because it is one thing for one to strive to do something

“But if the people that drives the system are not attuned psychologically, to doing that all such efforts will be fruitless.

“So, we want to prepare our psyche on the need to sharpen our tools in preparation to move over to a 100 per cent technologically driven WAEC and of course we have done that and we are going full blast,’’ he said.

The HNO noted that already, the council’s budget for 2018 had been fully designed to support the introduction of technology into the various aspects of its operation in Nigeria.

He explained that the move would put WAEC at the level it was expected to be in the comity of examination bodies worldwide.

“Members of staff of the council must be able to go beyond being a staff of the ICT Department. Even if one is a messenger, one should be able to ask how he can deploy technology to carry out his duties and this applies to all other operational components of council.

“So, this is an era where we are looking at 2018 as a year where we will be deploying technology in all facets of our operations, not just in conducting examination, processing of results and printing of certificates but in all areas of our operations,’’ the HNO said.

On the possibility of introducing Computer Based Test (CBT) platform for its examination, Adenipekun said that the CBT was not an examination mode that was limited to any particular examination body.

…WAEC to conduct private candidate exam twice yearly

Precisely 59.22 per cent of 1,559,192 candidates who wrote the May/June 2017 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) made credits in five subjects, including English and Mathematics.

Announcing the results Monday at the WAEC headquarters in Lagos, the Head of National Office (HNO), Mr Olu Adenipekun, said the performance was a significant improvement compared to last year, which was 52.97 per cent and 2015, which was 38.68 per cent.

“There has been a significant improvement and it is our hope that this will continue and not just be a fluke.  We hope schools will take advantage of this to prepare students better for the examination,” he said.

The HNO also said the council would begin conducting examinations for private candidates twice in a year from next year.

Adenipekun however said two categories of candidates will have to wait for some of their results either to be released or cancelled.  Candidates in the first group (95,734) has some of their results being processed because of errors traceable to them while 214,952 others are being investigated for involvement in examination malpractices.

“The results of 214,952 candidates, representing 13.79 per cent of the total candidature for the examination are being withheld in connection with various reported cases of examination malpractice.  The cases are being investigated and reports of the investigations will be presented to the appropriate committee of the Council in due course for consideration.  The committee’s decisions will be communicated to the affected candidates through their schools,” he said.

Adenipekun said WAEC was able to achieve its Project 60 target of releasing the result 60 days after the examination ended thanks to improved ICT facilities and training of its workers.  He added that the Council would work towards even earlier releases in future.

“We came up with Project 60, a self-imposed time limit for candidates to wait for release of result after the examination.  We are hoping to be able to release the result even faster.  We are looking at 45 days next time,” he said.

Regarding the conduct of two separate examinations for private candidates yearly, Adenipekun said the decision was taken at 65thAnnual Council Meeting of WAEC member countries in Abuja in March.

“One of the major highlights of the outcomes of the meeting was the approval granted to member countries to conduct the WASSCE for private candidates, twice in a year.  I am happy to inform you that the Nigeria National Office of the Council has concluded arrangements to commence the conduct of the additional diet of the WASSCE for private candidates from January/February, 2018,” he said.

    WAEC releases Nov/Dec WASSCE results

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) on Friday released the results of the November/December 2016 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for private candidates – with 38.50 per cent making credits in five subjects including English and Mathematics.

Announcing the release of the results at the WAEC national headquarters in Yaba, Lagos, the Head of National Office (HNO), Mr. Olu Adenipekun, said the percentage represents 66,497 of 172,699 candidates who sat for the examination held between October 26 and November 14, 2016.

Adenipekun said only 29.37 per cent reached the bench in 2014 and 20.50 per cent in 2015.

While 1,210 candidates representing 0.69 per cent will not be able to access all their results immediately because of errors being corrected, Adenipekun said 13,488 (7.81 per cent) candidates’ results have been withheld and are being investigated for involvement in examination malpractice.

“The cases are being investigated and reports of the investigations will be presented to the appropriate committee of the Council in due course for consideration. The Committee’s decisions will be communicated to the affected candidates thereafter,” he said.

Giving the statistics of candidates for the examination, the HNO said 51.12 per cent (88,290) were males, while 48.88 per cent (84,409) were females. Of the lot, 19 were visually challenged.

He thanked various stakeholders for their contributions to making the examination a success.

Regarding the backlog of payment by state governments for the May/June WASSCE, Adenipekun said no results were being withheld because of lack of payment.

He added that governments still owing are gradually offsetting their debts.

“I am not aware of any state in Nigeria still owing WAEC examination fees. We have some that have not completely paid. But they have given us a payment plan. They pay something every month,” he said.
