  • Buhari greets Elumelu at 55

President Muhammadu Buhari has felicitated with the Chairman of Heirs Holdings, Mr Tony Elumelu, on his 55th birthday, billed for March 22, 2018.

Buhari, in a statement by the Special Adviser on Media and publicity, Femi Adesina, joined the United Bank of Africa, the Tony Elumelu Foundation, the Elumelu family and all professional colleagues of the economist, consummate banker and successful entrepreneur, whose pacesetting antecedents continue to inspire both the young and old on the power of ideas, big dreams and hard work.

The President also commended Elumelu’s diligence, versatility and selflessness in championing the economic philosophy of “Africapitalism’’, which calls to action the need to grow businesses that cater for African interests, support governments and bottom-up development within the continent, by discouraging long term dependence on donor countries and philanthropic organisations.

As Elumelu turns 55 years, President Buhari believed the entrepreneur’s greatest investment has been in the development of people and communities, clearly evident in the Tony Elumelu Foundation which started with scholarships and fellowships, and now trains a new generation of business leaders across the continent.

President Buhari prayed that the almighty God will grant Elumelu longer life, more ideas and renewed vigour to pursue his dream of making life better for others.

  • Embrace entrepreneurship, Elumelu urges students

Chairman of Heirs Holdings Limited and founder of Tony Elumelu Foundation, Mr Tony Elumelu, has charged students to embrace entrepreneurship to become self-reliant after their studies. Engaging in free enterprise, he said, would make graduates escape the pain of unemployment.

Elumelu spoke at the National Dialogue Series held penultimate Saturday by the Students’ Union Government (SUG) of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS).

He described entrepreneurship as the engine room of the 21st century global economy, pointing out that entrepreneurs had helped many countries achieving prosperities through the power of their ideas and innovations. He said his foundation had committed resources to empowering start-ups in businesses and technology to drive their innovation.

He said: “Of all the offices I have held, the one that gladdens my heart most is the Tony Elumelu Foundation, which is committed to empowering young Africans using their innovative to change the story of the continent. We have committed resources to empower these start-ups as our contribution towards the development of our continent. This is borne out of my deep-rooted belief that entrepreneurship is the single most critical ingredient for economic empowerment and job creation.”

Elumelu praised the Vice-Chancellor (VC), Prof Abdullahi Abdu Zuru, for supporting the event, which, he said, could change the lives of the participant positively. He also praised a former student of the school, Dr Shadi Sabeh, at whose instance the event was organised.

He said: “Dr Shadi Sabeh’s role in organising this event is commendable. He is an entrepreneur and alumnus of the Tony Elumelu Foundation (TEF), who is also a winner of the Tony and Awele Elumelu prize for academic excellence. Shadi is a fine example of the great force and impact our young ones can achieve if we support and empower them.”

Chairman of the event, Alhaji Muhammad Zangaria, praised Elumelu for the impact his foundation had been making in Africa, adding that education and business empowerment was the best legacy to bequeath for the youth.

Prof Zuru described Elumelu as “African icon”, praising him for nurturing students and young people in business across the continent. The VC made a request of partnership with the TEF in building a School of Business to promote entrepreneurship in the North.

The SUG president, Idris Mubarak Maibasira, hailed the management for supporting the union’s initiative. He said Elumelu’s presence at the event would continue to inspire UDUS students to innovate and create businesses.

ECOWAS set to curb irregular migration

ECOWAS says it is set to enhance efforts at curbing irregular migration as well as the management of the internal and external borders of West Africa.

This formed part of the aims of a just concluded two-day workshop organised by the Migration Dialogue for West Africa Border Management Working Group in Abuja.

Mr Tony Elumelu, ECOWAS Head of Division, Free Movement and Migration said it was important to address the problem of irregular migration holistically without criminalising it.

The ECOWAS representative further said that the effective implementation of the ECOWAS protocols should not be taken with levity.

He added that it was pertinent to have a task force to jointly police the borders of West Africa with the rest of the world.

Mr Frantz Celestin, Programme Manager, International Organisation for Migration (IOM) assured of the continuous support of his organisation towards the Support to Free Movement of Persons and Migration in West Africa (FMM) programme.

The workshop further reviewed previous recommendations and presentations on regional dialogue on migration.

The workshop was also organised ahead of the Heads of Immigration meeting being convened to review and make recommendations on the implementation of the Protocol of Free Movement of Persons, migration management and regional data sharing.

FG to encourage implementation of ECOWAS protocol

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has introduced a programme to enlighten Nigerians on the implementation of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) protocol on free movement.

Minister of Foreign Affairs II, Dr. Nuruddeen Muhammad, said the programme was to mobilise Nigerians to take advantage of the various protocols to empower themselves.

The minister said this on Thursday in Birnin Kebbi in a message to the North West zonal workshop on “Understanding the relevance of ECOWAS protocol on free movement of persons, goods and services to national development.”

“The ministry would serve as a focal point and appraise implementation of protocol on free movement for Nigerians to explore it for empowerment,” he said in a message to the workshop delivered by Alhaji Yakubu Kalakala.

According to him, the protocol on free movement of persons and services as well as trade liberalisation is principally to serve as bedrock for the development of the sub region.

“The abuse arising from disregard to ECOWAS protocol had wide range of economic and security implications on Nigeria in view of activities of terrorists and economic saboteurs, “ the News Agency of Nigeria quoted the minister as saying at the forum.

He said the ministry would raise awareness on human security issues that included climate change, trafficking in persons and proliferation of small arms and light weapons.

The ECOWAS Head of Free Movement, Mr. Tony Elumelu, commended the ministry for the programme, which he said was of considerable benefits to member countries.

He urged participants to proffer modalities for the development of ECOWAS countries and identify impediments to free movement of persons, goods and services in the sub region.
