NAF to utilise aluminium, shoes produced by barrack youths, widows

Plans are underway by the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) to start utilising aluminium sheets and shoes produced by beneficiaries of the Nigerian Air Force Officers’ Wives Association (NAFOWA) skills acquisition programme.

Chief of the Air Staff (CAS) Air Marshal Sadiq Abubakar stated this Thursday during the graduation of 150 barrack youths and widows who were enrolled into the scheme last December.

Abubakar, who window-shopped the various times produced by the participants, expressed satisfaction at the quality of the shoes, boots and aluminium.

He said the NAF would work out modalities to ensure that the flat shoes were supplied to all female officers, Air Women, while the boots would be amended to suit the force’ approved camouflage and supplied to recruits.

Commending NAWOFA for the free training and starter packs given to the beneficiaries, the Air Chief said the association by its gesture, has contributed greatly in the fight against terrorism.

At the event were the wife of Lagos State Governor, Mrs. Bolanle Ambode, wife of the Chief of Staff to the President, Mrs. Bello Abba-Kyari, Air Officer Commanding (AOC) Logistics Command, Air Vice Marshal (AVM) Ibrahim Yahaya, Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Ferguson Bobai, among others.

Abubakar said: “I want to say that you are contributing to the development of the society and also ensuring we are successful in the fight against terrorism. Though you are not with us in the battle front, carrying riffles or flying helicopters but I want to tell you that what you are doing in our bases is positively impacting on the operations that we are combating all over the country.

“You have done so much in terms of supporting the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) from the contributions you are making monthly and voluntary contributions that personal are making. You are using it to put smiles on the faces of the most unfortunate citizens of the North East that have been trapped in this crisis.

“I also understand that similar skills acquisition programmes have been done in Makurdi Kaduna, Maiduguri and I understand you are also are planning another one in Port Hacourt. These programmes, I must say, are very significant because they key into our idea of providing for the welfare of air men/women and officers of the NAF.

“So this skill acquisition which targets youths and widows in the barrack is playing an important role because with this kind of program, we get less distractions from officers and men of NAF deployed to the field. They are more committed knowing fully well that their family members have been taken care of and that will translate to effectiveness in our operations.

“I have gone round and seen so many things the NAF can make use of. One typical example is the shoes which are light and beautiful. I have directed the logistic branch to immediately discuss with the people making the shoes so that we can get it for all female officers and air women in the office.

“Another thing I saw was the boots and all we need to do is to change the camouflage to the one that is approved for the Air Force and we can buy for our recruits that are training in Kaduna.

“I have also directed the AOC Logistics Command to discuss with those that are making the aluminum fabrication so that we can use the aluminum fabricated by these people. I urge the beneficiaries to take full advantage of the opportunities availed them to change society.”

Mrs. Ambode said  the initiative would bring stability in the lives of the beneficiaries and would have multiplier effect.

According to her, no one should shy away from the fact that the country was still struggling with issues of unemployment and under employment, despite determined efforts by governments at all level.

She said: “The best thing that can happen to our youths and others in need of jobs, is a programme like this, that brings succour and hope of sustainable engagement for regular income.

“Gainful employment is not limited to wage-paying jobs alone. Skills acquired that guarantee regular income are also good employment types. In many cases, some skis bring more financial rewards depending on the commitment and enterprise of the individual.

A personal business gives you the leverage to dictate your pace of operation, ensuring amole time and financial freedom for the entrepreneur. In the light of all these, being empowered with a skill is a great opportunity, capable of transforming the life of anyone.

“I am impressed with the vision of NAFOWA, which centres around making life more meaningful for the less privileged, especially women and children. This is a commendable commitment to the cause of humanity. I appeal to the beneficiaries to see this as a golden opportunity to turn things around for their own permanent good and lasting enjoyment.”

In her welcome address, NAWOFA President, Hajiya Hafsat Abubakar said the completion of the fourth skills acquisition programme was another hallmark in the association’s achievements, adding that 600 persons have benefited from the scheme in less than a year.

She said: “This is another hallmark in the achievements of NAFOWA in our quest to serve humanity better, empower the less privilege and carryout meaningful programmes that add value to human existence. By doing this, we hope to contribute our quota to the federal government’s effort at reducing unemployment amongst our youths and women.

“We also hope to build capacity amongst the participants by widening their horizon and giving then the necessary skills to be able to cater for themselves through setting up small businesses that are in much demand in this society.

“I can say we have been highly successful in our endeavour. Previous trainings done across the country and activities of daily living in different barracks have shown that certain trades and occupation are in high demand such as confectionery, computer services, cable television installation, shoe making and repairs, tailoring and make-up artistry.

“Our experiences have proven that these trades are easily converted to cash making and sustainable enterprises as almost every resident is in need of one of the services or the other. That’s why we focused our attention on these trades.

“The students have worked so hard and perfected their skills in different trades. They are determined to forge a brighter future for themselves and they deserve our encouragement and support.

“NAFOWA has been busy carrying out different humanitarian activities and projects that add value and build capacity. We have visited hospitals, where we identified with young girls and ladies with VVF. We have visited many IDP camps and have also carried out similar skills acquisition programmes at NAF bases in Makurdi, Maiduguri and Kaduna where we have trained over 600 participants. We are on our way to Port Harcourt for a similar endeavour.

“We have built a new state-of-the-art primary school in Kaduna and expanded and renovated existing structures in Abuja and Lagos… Some of our activities are generous supported by the personnel of the NAF through voluntary donations in cash and kind. They have really demonstrated a great resolve in exploring a better civil-military relationship as a way of achieving lasting peace.”

World Malaria Day: Ambode’s wife tasks mothers on prevention

Wife of the Governor of Lagos State, Mrs. Bolanle Ambode on Thursday advised mothers and mothers-to-be, to do all within their powers to prevent malaria rather than cure it.

She gave the advice when she visited the mother of triplets, Mrs. Segun Akinmosin, at the Epe General Hospital, on the occasion of the 2017 World Malaria Day, which had the theme, “A Push for Prevention”.

According to her, this year’s theme was a clear demonstration that prevention was cheaper and far better than cure, just as she advocated the use of insecticide treated nets, which was most effective in preventing malaria, accounting for an estimated 69 percent of cases prevented through control tools.

Mrs. Ambode noted that the administration in the state places the health needs of Lagosians on priority list, adding that maternal health would continue to be a priority, while also advising mothers and their children to sleep under treated nets.

She disclosed that the inclusion of mosquito nets aside other baby items in the gifts packs for the new borns was a deliberate, life-saving malaria prevention technique.

The representative of the Medical Director of Epe General Hospital, Dr. Jolaosho Adekunle and parents of the triplets, Mr. and Mrs. Segun Akinmosin, expressed appreciation to the wife of the Governor, stressing that her largesse couldn’t have come at a better time.

Since 2000, malaria’s prevention has played an important role in reducing cases and deaths, primarily through the scale up of insecticide treated nets and indoor spraying with insecticides.

World Malaria Day was established in May 2007 by the 60th Session of the World Health Assembly, a decision-making body of the World Health Organization (WHO). It is an occasion to highlight the need for continued investment and sustained political commitment, to support countries in their efforts to control and eliminate malaria, as well as provide education and understanding on malaria.

The World Health Organization (WHO) is shining a spotlight on prevention, a critical strategy for reducing the toll of a disease that continues to kill more people annually.

She charged the parents and privileged individuals to remember to extend a hand of love to the less privileged children not only at Christmas but always.

While urging them to enjoy the fun of the day, she charged the children to remain focused on climbing to greater heights in their academics and future endeavours.

In his remarks, State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode commended parents in Lagos for training their children in the right path, saying that his administration would continue to give the best to improve the all round development of children in the State.

Stop discrimination against persons living with HIV – Ambode’s Wife

The Wife of the Governor of Lagos State, Mrs Bolanle Ambode, has urged the public to desist from discriminating against persons living with HIV.
She made the call in Ikeja, at the 2016 World Aids Day commemoration with adolescents living with HIV, organised by the Lagos State Aids Control Agency (LSACA) in collaboration with Positive Action for Treatment Access (PATA).
She noted that since HIV was not contracted through physical contacts like hand-shaking or hugging, it was unnecessary to deliberately avoid people with the challenge.
She said, “I urge Lagos State Aids Control Agency to continue to sensitise the public, on the negative impact of discrimination against people living with HIV and AIDS.  All relevant government agencies should also work in synergy, to address issues that relate to stigma and discrimination against those persons.”
Mrs Ambode who commended LSACA and PATA for a two-week camping recently organised for young adolescents living with HIV advised the beneficiaries to follow expert advice, medical instructions, and to apply good discretion in their social interactions.
In his opening remarks, chief executive officer of LSACA, Dr Olusheyi Temowo, advised that all Lagosians should know their HIV status, stressing that the infection was not a death sentence.
Corroborating him, the representative of United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDs (UNAIDS), Dr Olubunmi Asa disclosed that the business of kicking out HIV was everyone’s business.
She disclosed further that though the level of awareness was high on the scourge, the task of eliminating it completely was not over, but with concerted effort, it could be achieved.
Also speaking, the Programme Manager of PATA, Mr Francis Umoh lamented that much of the social and psychological needs of the young adolescents living with HIV were not met, stressing that they should be embraced and not isolated, and medication made available to them.
Special Adviser to the governor on Health, Dr Olufemi Onanuga, assured the adolescents living with the challenge, that they would not be abandoned by the state government.

  • Oshiomhole lauds Ambode’s initiatives on Lagos traffic logjam

Oshiomhole lauds Ambode’s initiatives on Lagos traffic logjam

Governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole on Wednesday commended his Lagos State counterpart, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode for his various interventions in the last 18 months of his administration, saying that it has greatly impacted on the State, especially in the area of traffic reduction.

Oshiomhole, who spoke at the closing ceremony of the 16th National Women Conference, organised by the Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials (COWLSO), commended the wife of the Governor of Lagos State, Mrs. Bolanle Ambode, particularly for sustaining COWLSO since its establishment, adding that the choice of the theme for this year’s Conference “Strong Family, Strong Nation’, was quite instructive.

Speaking on the specific challenges posed by modern lifestyle on the family where the parents would have to leave home early and come home late, Oshiomhole said Governor Ambode, with his strategic traffic management initiatives was to a very large extent addressing the challenges.

Oshiomhole said, “As I was coming to this place today, I noticed something that I think is worth celebrating because of its impact in helping family unity and family union. Why will you wake up at 5am or 4am just to be at work at 8am devoting all the time to traffic?

“The reason was because of the huge traffic challenges but when I received the invitation for today’s event and I was advised that it was 10am and I know my brother, Governor Ambode keeps to time, I said we have to get up early and I told my wife that we are going to spend about two hours from Ikeja Airport to get to Ikoyi, but I was very pleasantly surprised that coming from Ikeja to this place, it was like flying a first class aircraft from Alausa to the heart of Ikoyi.”

“When I got here, I was asking the Governor on how he did it and he shared with me the interventions put in place within months of his assumption of office that have helped to completely reorder the traffic in Lagos such that when we slow down to about 20km per hour, we noticed people asking what is causing this go slow but things have changed so much.”

He said the interventions of the Governor was not only reducing traffic and fuel consumption, but was also bringing back the good times of family bonding as travel time has reduced, hence husbands and wives don’t have excuse of traffic to get home late or leave very early.

Oshiomhole said over the years as Governor of Edo State, he has had cause to learn and borrow from the template Lagos was running, expressing optimism that his successor and Governor-elect, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, would be willing to borrow a leaf from the COWLSO Conference as well as the traffic management strategy of Lagos.

“We borrowed what is happening in Lagos to make the case for Godwin Obaseki in Edo that Nigeria must move away from a tradition in which you have to be a celebrated politician to become eligible to contest for a political office, and that what we need in times like this are skills and people with managerial acumen and competence and we readily referred to Lagos as an example of what works with a seasoned and indisputable leader like Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu laying the foundation, dreaming big, dreaming clearly and setting the vision and identifying capable young men and women to translate those vision in a manner that is unprecedented in the history of our country,” Oshiomhole said.

He added that with the achievements of Governor Ambode, so far, he (the Governor) has shown that the only poverty to address is the poverty of ideas, adding that once the brain is creative and imaginative with a Governor that is ready to apply himself, there is no problem that would defer solution.

“You have shown that our task as leaders is not to lament what does not work but to think through how to make it work and that you are doing; that you have done and I know that you will continue to do,” Oshiomhole said.

Earlier in her remarks, wife of the Governor of Lagos State, Mrs. Bolanle Ambode said the three-day conference had opened the mind of participants to new ideas, information and statistics, saying that the women are better empowered to become change agents.

She explained that the success story of the conference could not have been without the excellent cooperation of the women who form COWLSO, just as she admonished them to put all what they were taught at the conference into use in their respective offices and homes.

Ambode’s wife charges women on regular cancer screening

Wife of the Governor of Lagos State, Mrs. Bolanle Ambode has advised women to go for regular cancer screening to know their latest status.
She gave the advice at the maiden scientific conference of the Lagos State branch of the Association of Female Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria, at Alausa, Ikeja on Friday with the theme: ‘Cancer in the Life of a Woman not a Death Sentence (the Medical Laboratory Perspective)’.
She observed that cancer screening was necessary for early detection in case of affliction, stressing that when detected early, it could be treated and cured like any other health condition.
“Truly, cancer in the life of anyone today is certainly not a death sentence. Through relentless advocacy, public education and mass enlightenment, we have come to know that early diagnoses mean easier management of the condition and increased chances of survival.
“The message we are trying to pass therefore is that, people with the challenge should not be heartbroken or see it as the end of life. Normal, happy life is possible with a cancer condition,” she said.
Mrs. Ambode who appealed that persons living with cancer should not be stigmatized, showered encomiums on female laboratory scientists.
She said, “The role of lab scientists is such that one wonders what would happen in the health care delivery chain, if you are not there to confirm the blood groups, do the wide array of tests and general laboratory investigation that could make or mar the patient treatment process”.
Earlier, Chairperson of the Conference Planning Committee, Mrs. Audu Habibat, noted that the conference was aimed at building bridges of understanding and cooperation between the laboratory scientists and other healthcare professionals, towards improving healthcare delivery in the state.
She said that the maiden edition was dedicated to public enlightenment on cancer as a health condition that could be managed like any other if diagnosed early.
Also speaking, Lagos State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Hon. (Mrs) Lola Akande, said the ministry also organized cancer screening for women recently to ensure their wellness.

  • Embrace healthy lifestyle, Ambode’s wife charges pregnant women

Embrace healthy lifestyle, Ambode’s wife charges pregnant women

Wife of Lagos State Governor, Mrs Bolanle Ambode on Wednesday urged pregnant women to complement the efforts of government at achieving zero infant maternal mortality rate by embracing healthy and hygienic lifestyle, just as she urged them to get proper advice and direction on basic ante and post -natal care for themselves and their infants.

Mrs. Ambode, who spoke at a programme of support for pregnant women organized by Hope for Women In Nigeria Initiative (HOFOWEM), which is her pet project, said often times infants are at risk of infections, diarrhea, poor growth and many common diseases associated with un-hygienic habits, and as such expectant mothers must make hygienic living a habit such as simple washing of hands constantly.

Speaking at the programme tagged “Hope for Expectant Mothers,” Mrs Ambode said: “The act of washing hands is so simple yet we do not see it as a game changing solution. They are so elementary that we frequently forget they can save lives. Basic personal hygiene and good sanitary conduct begins with hand-washing.

“So it is an important message to take home for the young ones. Let them know the many benefits of that simple act. Tell them it prevents infections, keeps them neat, keeps them healthy and happy all the time.

“Even as mothers, always wash your own hands not only when you have visited the toilet but before cooking, serving food or attending to your infants. This way, many unnecessary illnesses for the child or mother would be prevented. As women, we have a key role to play in the health-for-all aspiration of the Lagos State Government. We must play our role effectively to help government achieve zero infant and maternal mortality rate,” the Wife of the Governor said.

Speaking on her passion for women and children, Mrs Ambode said her vision was to transform their lives, put smiles on their faces, give them hope and make life more meaningful for them.

“This event is significant for me as a mother, a parent and as a Nigerian. The programme is not just about supporting good hygiene and healthy habits during pregnancy and after delivery, but it is also about safeguarding the future of our children right from infancy,” she said.

She added that in the few years, the State had witnessed significant reduction in maternal and child mortality rate, attributing same to adequate ante and post natal care and the State Government’s continuous improvement on health facilities, constant re-training of medical personnel and provision of modern equipment including the regular supply of mosquito nets.

HOFOWEM is a foundation established with the intention of uplifting the welfare of widows, children and aged women.

At the event held at Adeyemi Bero Auditorium in Alausa, Ikeja, a total of about 230 pregnant women were given complete delivery packs which included baby and mother beds, sanitary pad, towel, beverages, thermometer, shawl, diapers, breastfeeding net, traveling bed, sanitizers, among others.

The beneficiaries, drawn from all parts of the State, were also lectured by experts on how to achieve safe delivery and other issues relating to healthy living.

Earlier, HOFOWEM Coordinator, Ms Oyefunke Adeleke thanked Mrs. Ambode for being a permanent fountain of kindness to women and children in the State, adding that the programme was one of the numerous initiatives aimed at significantly helping women and children.
