  • Mbanefo gets awards for charity

Anambra State Commissioner for Diaspora Affairs, Indigenous Artwork Culture and Tourism, Mrs Sally Mbanefo, has been honoured in Awka, the state capital,  for her outstanding humanitarian services.

The award organised by a Canadian-leading Christian Magazine, Miles Magazine and Media Inc, also honoured 15 others.

Mrs. Mbanefo expressed her appreciation for the award. Quoting John F Kennedy, she said: “If a free society cannot help the many who are poor, it cannot save the few who are rich.”

She noted that it had always been her desire to serve humanity.

Mrs Mbanefo said The Sally Mbanefo Foundation(TSM) was born out of the resolution she made to herself and to God after her 31 challenging years of high-flying jobs to give something to the poor.

She stated that the TSM has contributed to and partnered other international non-governmental organisations (NGOs) on numerous charitable causes ranging from free medical mission, education and others.

She commended the Miles Group for making available and affordable the water filter equipment.

“The water filter is second to none. It has an excellent filtering mechanism, has the capacity to deal with harmful bacteria, and protozoan cyst and makes drinking water safe, compared to most sachet and table water,” she said.

She restated TSM’s commitment to collaborate with the Miles Group to launch mobile clinic in the rural communities in the state.

The Publisher of Miles Magazine Bishop Don Ifepe said the award was an opportunity to bring people together yearly to celebrate the Easterners.

Bishop Ifepe said having made a lot of impact in Canada, he had  come home to help tell the story of the Igboman to the world through the magazine, which is distributed in seven countries.

“The eastern race is the engine that fuels a lot of sectors of Nigerian economy, social life and other areas like politics, business and movies,” he said.

He noted that it is an opportunity to launch the water-for-life project that will bring NdiAnambra good clean water.

“I went all round the world searching for company that will make the water filter equipment affordable for the common man, schools, communities, hospitals and places that couldn’t afford clean water everyday who end up buying pure water. That is why this year’s stars from the east award night is all about the project of water for life,” he said.

Other recipients of the award included Senator Victor Umeh, Igwe Emeka Ilouno and Helping Hand Foundation.

Mrs Mbanefo was also honoured with African Women of Excellence award at Johannesburg in South Africa by the African Union and Diaspora African Forum.

The award was in honour of the contributions of African women to charity, struggle for political, social and economic independence at various levels with excellence.

Mrs Mbanefo said the award was not given to her because she was the best in Nigeria or because of her 31 years of experience in her high-flying jobs, but because of the small part everybody had played in delivering the African promise of being our brothers’keeper.

“I vividly remember Dr Nelson Mandela, the late Madiba, who, in 1963, said I fought black domination and white domination. What is he trying to teach us here? That domination of any kind is not acceptable no matter who is concerned. Mandela also made us appreciate the famous speech of Martin Luther King in which he said, ‘I have a dream that one day, people will be judged by the content of their character and not by the colour of their skin’. This is the African dream we all desire and it is my prayer that we live up to this dream. So, let us celebrate African’s diversity, African’s inclusiveness and our humanity because it costs nothing .

“What makes us African? Am I African by the way I look? No, we are Africans by our actions, by the love we show to Africa. By the value we add to Africa. That is what defines an African and not just the colour of our skin. The greatest assets as an African woman are, first, humility of purpose, of person,of character and of attitude. I have learnt this in all my working years with the Yoruba. Secondly, choosing one’s battles at work, and at home to ensure peace of mind and thirdly practicing to be a woman of silence. It is not everyone who provokes you that you respond to, save your energy for more positive things and fight only battles that are necessary.

“In giving, we must give wholeheartedly and give until it hurts. The type of giving expected of us is sacrificial giving. One can give one’s talent, time or treasure. Over the past 11 years, I have been giving 1000 percent of what I earn. So there is nothing like 10 per cent, you give as much as your heart desires. We have been giving to empower the African youth, as well as empowering the widows and downtrodden, it is our duty,” she said in appreciation of the award.

She said the award was dedicated first to God, then to Anambra state, to Nigeria, and to the African girl child struggling to be educated. She commended Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra state for deeming it necessary for her to be in South Africa to receive the award.

  • Stakeholders clamour for professional to head NTDC

Stakeholders clamour for professional to head NTDC

Tourism stakeholders are agitating for the appointment of thorough breed professional to mount the saddle of leader at the Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC).

This followed the sack of the former director general the national tourism agency, Mrs. Sally Mbanefo, last Wednesday.

That brought to an end a tenure many considered set back to tourism development in Nigeria.

According to them, the need to appoint core professional has become necessary in the light of the critical role the tourism is expected to play in the Nigerian economy in the light of dwindling oil revenue.

According to them, the era whereby the headship of NTDC is seen as position used to pay political debt or curry political favour has passed.

“Tourism is a serious business all over the world. It is specialized. Anybody without deep industry knowledge cannot succeed. That is why we have had failures. If the government is serious it sees tourism as a viable sector capable of creating revenue , the appointment of a new head for the  NTDC would send that signal”, a leading tourism practitioner who would rather not want his name mentioned said.

Among those being touted as possible fit for the headship of the government parastatal are :

Mr. Ikechi Uko, Mr. Nkereuwen Onung,Mr.  Ini Akpabio, Mrs. Stella Obinwa, Mr.Gabe Onah, Chief Samuel Alabi, Mrs. Uloma Egbuna, Mrs. Victoria Soluade, Otunba Ayo Olumoko and  Mr. Kabir Malan.

Ikechi Uko comes with huge wealth of experience and insightful knowledge of the sector. He was a member of national Vision 2020 sub-committee, for many has been publishing African Travel Quarterly (ATQ), and organizes the only travel fair in West Africa, the annual Akwaaba African Travel Market that holds annually in Lagos.  He, according to industry source, has cut a niche both the tourism and aviation sector as an informed and very knowledgeable expert. “This is what we need in the sector as this knowledge would help grow the whole gamut of travel and tourism in Nigeria. You know tourism can’t function without aviation in Nigeria,” the source said.

Others being touted include:Mr. Gabe Onah, Chairman, Carnival Calabar Commission. Sir Gabe Onah is a graduate of Theatre Arts from the University of Calabar. In 2001 the then Governor of Cross River State Mr. Donald Duke appointed Gabe as Government spokesman and his Special Assistant on information.  In 2003 he was deployed to the Department of Culture and Tourism and in 2006 he was appointed the Managing Director of the Cross River State Tourism Bureau a position he held until the end of Mr. Duke’s tenure, as Governor of Cross River State. He had since superintended the Rise of Carnival Calabar to Global heights.

Nkereuwem Onung, President Nigerian Association of Tour Operators (NATOP), Managing Director, and owner, Remlords Tours and Car Hire Services.

Jemi Alade is the foremost inbound tour operator and founding member of NATOP . His tour company is regarded as the leading inbound tour operators in Nigeria. Jemi Alade is among the few tour operators that privately initiate oversea marketing trips to sell Nigerian tourism products, most especially festivals to foreign tourists.

Chief Samuel Alabi, the Board of Trustee chairman of the Federation of Tourism Associations of Nigeria (FTAN), is the legal adviser of Eko Hotel and Suites. He was also the former President of FTAN.

Otunba Ayo Olumoko is the First National Deputy President of FTAN. He is the marketing consultant for Osun Osogbo festival since 2002.

Stella Obinwa, the Director of Marketing for Africa, Dubai Tourism, has been part of the Nigerian travel industry during her stint with Nigeria’s foremost online booking company, Wakanow.com, She has superintended increase in the market share of Dubai as a tourism destination in the African market.

Mbanefo reiterates commitment to tourism promotion

The Director-General, Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC), Mrs. Sally Mbanefo, has reiterated her commitment to the partnership with Kano State government in promoting tourism.

Mbanefo, who spoke during a courtesy visit by a four-man delegation from Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, to the corporation, said Kano State is one of the tourism friendly states and a major tourism hub and gateway in Nigeria.

“This is why NTDC found it strategically important to establish the tourism information desk and travel portal at the Aminu Kano International Airport. The centre would facilitate travel businesses and promote hospitality and tourism services in Kano and Nigeria at large,” she said.

Permanent Secretary, Civil Service Commission, Abdullahi H. Kwaru, who led the delegation acknowledged the role NTDC has been playing in projecting the image of Nigeria to the globe. He said the purpose of the visit was to seek collaboration with NTDC in the area of domestic tourism, especially the Jiga Dam Project, women and youth empowerment, including other attractions in the state.

Spokesman of the delegation, Civil Service Commissioner in the state, Engr. Bello Mohammed said: “NTDC is a reputable organisation that is capable of branding Kano State as a tourism friendly state. We are very happy with the Director General, Mrs. Sally Mbanefo, who has visited Kano state to open the NTDC Tourism Information Desk at the Aminu Kano International Airport. We are proud of her passion for promoting domestic tourism even in the face of challenges in our country. We are pledging to support the efforts of the corporation in our capacity while soliciting for collaboration with NTDC,” he said.

The delegates also commended the efforts of the corporation under the leadership of Mrs. Mbanefo particularly her official visit to the state, which afforded her the opportunity to identify major attractions in the state. They assured that Kano State government has provided the enabling environment to attract investors to the state and for tourism activities to thrive.

Mrs. Mbanefo noted that Kano State and NTDC have come a long way as partners in tourism development. “I have embarked on domestic tourism tour within Kano metropolis to visit and identify major tourist attractions and the Jiga Dam is one of the very strong potentials in the state. I must say that lots of people are trooping into Kano. It is ideal for business/conference tourism. The tourism bond which will build structures around tourist sites to service the needs of the site will quickly come to bear in Kano State.

“I visited the Governor of Kano State and the Emir of Kano as well. It is clear that the Governor is focusing a lot of attention to tourism and security in the State and Kano is indeed very safe for tourists,” she added.

She stressed that tourism remains the largest employer of labour and “one of the enablers behind the country’s developmental programmes of job creation and as people travel within Nigeria, it will create unity and peaceful harmony”.

  • When culture drives tourism

    When culture drives tourism

The bright light from the adjoining Egypt’s and Tanzania’s stands lit up the twin cylinder-shaped designs hanging over other structures. Each corner was equipped with white chairs, tables and relevant literature on Nigeria for discussants. It was an ideal setting for the business of the day.

By 4pm, all of that have started giving way to arts and culture, especially when two groups, Osun Foundation Troupe and a nine-man band, Wale Salter, mounted the stage at strategic corner of the stand.

First, it was Osun Troupe backed by Eyo masqueraders. When Salter took his turn, the performances reached a crescendo and Ghana’s Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creativity Elizabeth Ofosu Adjare took to the dance floor with the Director-General of Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation, Mrs. Sally Mbanefo.

Welcome to AF560, South Hall (Nigeria’s stand), Excel Centre, London, last Wednesday during Nigeria’s Day at this year’s World Travel Market. For the next two hours, there was a ceaseless influx of tourists of diverse race and colour to the stand, despite that African countries, such as Ghana, Rwanda, Senegal and Egypt, also held theirs same day.

With over 100 exhibiting nations and 82,213 visitors in attendance, Nigeria stood tall, using the country’s music, dance, food and indigenous fabrics, not only to draw global attention to its tourism potential, but also to buttress the fact that arts and culture remain the major drivers of Nigerian tourism.

Mbanefo listed reasons tourists should visit Nigeria as a destination of choice. She spoke on the warm weather, friendly and hospitable people, amazing natural and historical sites, booming entertainment industry as well as cultural festivals, to the delight of listeners. A Colombian tourist who was among visitors to the stand believed that Nigerian culture remains one of the best in the world.

“I love the musical rhythm. You people have amazing culture. Your food, your dance, your dresses are wonderful. I am a Colombian but I love Nigeria,”he said.

For Mbanefo, the day was a fulfilling one for Nigeria. “It has been quite interesting. The inflow of visitors to Nigeria’s stand is encouraging and it is an indication that there is still hope for Nigeria. People have besieged the Nigerian stand since the beginning of the fair to get information about the country’s business climate. They have also asked about Ebola and how we conquered the virus. They want to know how secured the country is now and we are restoring their confidence about Nigeria.

“Not just Nigerians alone that have been coming here, other nationals have been coming too and are also very interested in the things we have to offer in the tourism industry. We have availed ourselves the opportunity of influx of people to our pavilion to showcase our tourism assets, to tell the world that our people are our most cherished assets- warm, friendly and hospitable people.

Our tourism sites, entertainment industry and festivals all join to make Nigeria as a destination of choice.

“This year’s outing is another wake-up call for Nigerians both at home and in the Diaspora as well as potential investors in tourism. It was an opportunity to showcase all the tourism assets that Nigeria has and the reason tourists should make Nigeria their destination choice. We would want those who do business in Nigeria to also enjoy leisure and we would also be excited to receive you all in Nigeria”, she said.

Publisher of Come To Nigeria Magazine and an artist, Mr Oladimeji Adisa whose company was among the cultural troupes that performed for Nigeria, was honoured by NTDC for his contribution towards the promotion of Nigerian culture and tourism abroad. Based in Liverpool, Adisa has been promoting Nigeria, using indigenous music and dance. Also, Come To Nigeria Magazine’s focus is to further showcase the culture and tourism potentials of the country.

Representative of Ogun State at the fair was the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Mrs Yewande Amusan who marketed the state’s festivals, cultural and historical sites. She also led a team of textile artists to demonstrate the production process of the local fabric, Tie and Die (Adire). Amusan praised NTDC for the insight and opportunity given to Ogun to showcase its culture to the world.

“I commend NTDC for giving us the opportunity to attend this kind of event. What we are doing is keying into the vision of what the Federal Government is doing and I can say on behalf of my governor that the state is also committed to tourism development. We have so many products and destinations but this year, we have chosen to concentrate on the Adire industry. We have come with adire makers who will demonstrate what it takes to produce the fabric.

“Of course, we have a traditional way of making it but we are complimenting it with commercial method. We are trying to make people know the different uses of adire but it begins with appreciating the fabric. With that, we can get the younger generation interested in making a living out of it. It is the first time NTDC is partnering with our state in this regard and it is very rewarding. Guests to Nigeria’s stand, Blacks and Whites, were lavishly entertained with indigenous cuisines,” she noted.

There were lots of arts and crafts on display throughout the four- days fair, which also had about 20 private sectors exhibitors such as Arik Air, Keystone Bank, Eko Hotel and Suites, West Africa Tourism, EFTAN, Treavan Limited Travels and Tours, Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Ogun State Ministry of Culture and Tourism, among others.

  • ‘We’ll propagate domestic tourism through Osun Osogbo festival’

‘We’ll propagate domestic tourism through Osun Osogbo festival’

For a successful outing this year,

the Director-General of the Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC), Mrs Sally Mbanefo has promised to join forces with the Osun Osogbo Festival Advisory Council to ensure a hitch-free festival. The NTDC boss who made the pledge during the courtesy visit of the delegation of the Ataoja of Osogbo to the Director General said that the corporation will explore the festival to further propagate the gospel of domestic tourism promotion in the country.

“God brought me to the helms of affairs of NTDC for a purpose, to make a positive change, to reposition the Nigerian tourism industry, to make Nigeria proud in the global tourism world, to enable Nigeria and Nigerians benefit from the inestimable goodies of the money-spinning industry through creation of wealth and employment at the grassroots level. And these, by the grace of God, I will achieve,” she said.

Interestingly, there are so much tourism potentials in the Southwest, but many of these potentials are suffering from neglect in terms of development and patronage. A case is Moremi in Ile-Ife, Osun State. There is nothing to show the inestimable work and influence of Moremi in Yorubaland. All one could see is a statue of the virtuous woman.

“But by the grace of God, NTDC shall make a statement in this year edition of Osun Osogbo festival, exploring the opportunity of the festival to further preach the gospel of domestic tourism, which remains a viable weapon to promote tourism in Nigeria and create wealth and employment at the grassroots, to reduce urban migration, promote unity and encourage integration of culture within Nigeria,” Mbanefo said.

She described Yoruba cultures and heritage as richest in the world, noting that Sango festival is being celebrated in 43 countries of the world. She charged the organisers of Osun Osogbo festival to ensure that it is taken to other parts of the world. Mbanefo reiterated the commitment of the corporation to develop one tourist site in each of the six geo-political zones in the country, noting that Moremi tourist centre will be developed to an international standard.

She gave the assurance of full participation of the corporation, saying, “We are not just coming to distribute fliers and souvenirs, but we will be fully involved.”

Mbanefo thereafter constituted a committee to ensure proper and fruitful engagement of the corporation in the festival. Chairman, Osun Osogbo Festival Advisory Council, Chief Jimoh Buraimoh, lauded the efforts of the NTDC boss at promoting domestic tourism in the country, saying that is what Osun Osogbo stands for.”We are not celebrating Osun Osogbo cultural festival for the fun of it, but to promote the Yoruba culture and heritage, and to promote tourism in the country,” Buraimoh said.

The chairman of Osun Osogbo Festival Advisory Council expressed the council’s expectation of a better collaboration, saying, “We wanted NTDC as a twin in promoting Osun Osogbo festival. And we shall continue to improve on the planning and celebration of the festival.”The Chief Executive Officer of INFOGEM and Chief Consultant of Osun Osogbo Festival, Mr Ayo Olumoko, described the NTDC boss as a stunt advocate of domestic tourism. Olumoko noted that Osun Osogbo festival is the festival that has entered into the corporate world, unlike when it used to solely rely on the government for sponsorship. ”We want to use the opportunity the Osun Osogbo festival provides to support the domestic tourism promotion initiative of the Mbanefo led-administration,” Olumoko said.

  • NTDC launches Tour Abuja City

    NTDC launches Tour Abuja City

•Mbanefo describes staff as core stakeholders

The Director-General of Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation, Mrs Sally Mbanefo has reiterated the corporation’s commitment to the promotion of domestic tourism in the country as it will flag off the Tour Abuja City project next month. This is in pursuance of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC) and ABC Transport on promotion of domestic tourism in Nigeria.

She spoke at the two-day NTDC staff retreat held at the Village Hall of the corporation in Abuja, recently.

The project, according to Mrs Mbanefo, is to market tourist sites in Abuja, thereby encouraging residents in the city to visit tourist sites therein.

Mbanefo disclosed that ABC Transport has assigned two sight-seeing busses to the project to take Abuja residents from one tourist destination to the other, adding that, “the busses will pick people from nine designated bus stops to 24 tourist sites/landmarks in Abuja city.”

Meanwhile, Mrs Mbanefo described staff of the corporation as core stakeholders in the Nigeria’s tourism industry, noting that neglect of the staff was why the nation’s tourism master plan never worked.

“Why all the tourism master plans we have been having in the country did not work is that they abandoned the staff, and pay no or less attention to the welfare of the staff, that are going to drive the project, direct the strategic imperative of the organisation,” she decried.

“I appreciate the fact that staff of the NTDC, the implementers of the corporation’s strategic imperatives, are the core stakeholders in the industry, hence, they must be well equipped and practically made ambassadors of the Nigeria’s tourism industry to drive development in the industry. We must feed the goose that lays the golden egg.

“As a result, capacity building and staff welfare are  priorities on my agenda in repositioning the Nigeria’s tourism industry and promoting domestic tourism in the country. And this, I will execute to the letter.

“Following our Memorandum of Understanding with The Gambia Tourism Board, 20 NTDC staff will be going for an exchange programme in Gambia on customer care, public relations, health and safety, administration, management, and project management. Meanwhile, the Gambia Tourism Board are inviting tourism specialists from Netherland to imbibe our staff with tourism best practices,” Mbanefo said.

The retreat, Mbanefo said, was organised to equip the staff of the corporation on how to generate revenue, as well strengthen their capacity for enhanced service delivery to tourism stakeholders.

On her activities in the first year in office, Mbanefo said: “We want all Nigerians to recognise the importance of tourism; that is why we used the first year of our administration to create awareness and agree on implementable policy framework that would make it possible for the country to harness the potentials that abound in the tourism sector.

“Staff will be locally trained on how to involve the staff in revenue generation, and to have understanding of what role they have to play because they are my most important stakeholders in this tourism value chain.”

While reviewing her 2014 revenue generation plan during the retreat, Mbanefo stated that one of her plans was to make the corporation independent of government handouts.

“One of the reasons behind revenue generation is for NTDC to become independent of government handout. We believe that in all the country that have tourism best practices, tourism is what the nations survive on; but that is not the case with Nigeria.

“But with NTDC’s strive on tourism and the support of all the partners we have signed MOU with, we are going to generate revenue not just for NTDC alone but for the whole country, then, there would be a future, then, the desperation on oil will be reduced, there will be jobs.”

  • Badagry monarch lauds tourism boss

    Badagry monarch lauds tourism boss

THE Oba of Badagry, De Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi I, Oba Babatunde Akran, has described the domestic tourism promotion agenda of the Director-General of the Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC), Mrs Sally Mbanefo, as an incontestable way to promote Nigeria’s tourism and boost the nation’s economy.

The monarch said: “Sally Mbanefo is hitting the nail on the head with the promotion of domestic tourism. This was what the government of Japan did some years ago with a law stopping Japanese from traveling out of the country for holidays. It paid off. It did not only endear Japanese to their country and the tourist attractions therein, but it also wooed foreigners to the country and developed their economy.”

Oba Akran spoke last Saturday during a courtesy visit by the NTDC boss to his palace.

“Domestic tourism remains the best approach to promote Nigeria’s tourism and better the lots of Nigeria and Nigerians. Hence, the NTDC boss should be well-mobilised and supported by every stakeholder in the industry to achieve her domestic tourism promotion cause, which in turn will boost our economy, hearten peace and unity, drastically reduce social vices and woo hosts of foreign tourists to our country,” he added.

The monarch, who described the NTDC boss’ visit as momentous, as the visit coincided with his 37th coronation anniversary, noted that Mbanefo is the first director-general of the NTDC to come to Badagry to appreciate the tourist sites in the town  to champion their promotion.

Mrs Mbanefo, who congratulated the Akran of Badagry on his 37th peaceful reign and prayed for more fulfilling years for him, said tourism will enable Nigerians know the country, appreciate the many tourist attractions in the country, appreciate its various fascinating cultures, and attract foreigners to the country.

This, according to her, will have a positive reflection on the economy.

She described her visit to Badagry as part of her ongoing visit to the geo-political zones in the country to know the tourists’ sites in the states, “assess how to develop and promote them to encourage Nigerians and foreigner travel within Nigeria”. This, according to her, will immensely benefit the nation and her good people.

Mrs Mbanefo described Badagry as the first tourist site in Lagos. She added: “There is no way the history of Nigeria will be written without prominently mentioning Badagry, where Christianity was first preached in 1842 by Revd Thomas Birch Freeman, where the first Christmas was held in Nigeria, where the first church, the first primary school and the first storey building, just to mention a few, were located in Nigera.”

The Akran of Badagry while presenting a gift of coconut to the NTDC boss, prayed that God should give her Solomonic wisdom to achieve her lofty dream for the tourism subsector, which will make Nigeria stand tall in the comity of nations and enrich her people.

“Sally, you are a symbol of Nigeria tourism. It is, no doubt, with your strides since you assumed office that you meant business with the promotion of domestic tourism. Therefore, I pray that God will endowed you with the wisdom to practically develop and promote domestic tourism in Nigeria,” the monarch said.

The monarch also presented the NTDC boss with the Badagry Pilgrimage Certificate, which, according to him, is not given to every Tom, Dick and Harry, but patriots, who meant well for the nation and the town.

The Badagry Ambassador of Tourism and founder of African Renaissance, Hon. Olaide Mesewaku, described the appointment of Mrs Mbanefo as the NTDC director-general as a round peg in a round hole, adding that she is poised to record more successes than her predecessors.

  • ‘We need paradigm shift in tourism promotion’

‘We need paradigm shift in tourism promotion’

On assumption of office in May last year, she was unambiguous of her mission and vision for the nation’s tourism industry. Today, despite paucity of funds, the Director-General of Nigeria Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC), Mrs Sally Mbanefo has worked her talks in focusing on domestic tourism as cornerstone for building a sustainable tourism industry that will attract foreign tourists and investors, reports Assistant Editor (Arts) OZOLUA UHAKHEME.

Director-General Nigeria Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC), Mrs Sally Mbanefo has identified paucity of funds as a major challenge being faced by the corporation in its execution of tourism projects. She said such hindrances are affecting the total rebuilding process and refocusing of the corporation to meets its set targets of becoming a significant revenue generation source for the country.

Mrs Mbanefo blamed this development on the inability of most Nigerians to see tourism as a revenue generator and as an alternative to oil as well as sustainable tourism assets that can earn money for the country. “I don’t believe I was given this job to keep going to Federal Government asking for money to run our projects. I think the government put me here in order to create our own money because we are capable of doing so. That’s why we are calling on the private sector to come in. So, funding of projects is really the main challenge.

“Nigerians have not started looking at tourism as a revenue generator, as an alternative to oil, as sustainable tourism industry, sustainable tourism assets which can earn money for the country. We also need a paradigm shift in culture change about how people think about tourism and also about foreigners coming into the country to visit the various beautiful sites such as the Mambila Plateau, Osun-Osogbo festivals,” she said.

Reacting to the country’s tourist’s receipt that is on the low side, she said private sector needs to champion tourism because it is a private sector activity which must be driven by the sector. According to her, people believe Abuja is a boring conference centre that should be changed to a tourism spot of the world, as a green city and an eco-tourist state where waste will be converted into bio-fuel.

“So, it is not just about the beauty but also the revenue we create. The firm that has agreed to partner us in this project will pay for it from the beginning to the end, and they will get their money back through the income we generate. We are also partnering with Federal Government. It is going to be green city which includes tourist Nigeria, heritage Nigeria, anything that reminds people of Nigeria. We just want Abuja to have a fantastic tourism city, everything will be driven by nature, green solar energy, green combustion, and it will be green everywhere. We will be changing waste into wealth and creating a city that is green and nature-driven,” she added.

Mrs Mbanefo who put the estimated cost of the project at $150m, disclosed that the corporation that has volunteered to do the work is doing it through prefab and that it would take a one year to complete. She explained that the biggest part of the work is mapping the land before the commencement of the project. .

On sourcing of funds for the Abuja project, Mrs Mbanefo said that a foreign company has undertaken to invest in it and will get their money back through proceeds made from the sales of hotels, houses and shops. “Money will come out of those investments and from there, we will decide what goes to them, what goes to the Federal Government, what goes to FCT and what goes to NTDC,” she said.

She observed that there is a seeming competition amongst state governors on people-friendly projects especially those that affect children, women and tourists. She cited the Ondo State governor Dr Segun Mimiko as a good example other governors must emulate.

“All I can say, so far, is that Ondo State has been so exemplary in education, in infant mortality and medical tourism. I think the state is leading.

“In Akwa Ibom, we can talk about their e-Library, Calabar has beautiful museums, and it also has the Tinapa and the carnivals. Why foreigners appreciate Nigeria a lot is because we have carnivals and festivals, some countries do not have them, so they are fascinated by it. Nigeria has unique festivals and carnivals, there are cultural things that are only found in Nigeria, and our country has so much to sell,” she said, noting that

NTDC has plans to have a stand at all the airports in the country where visitors can get information about tourist’s sites in the country.

To further facilitate domestic tourism, Mrs Mbanefo said NTDC is collaborating with ABC Transport with the aim of providing transportation to tourists at subsidised rate so that Nigerians can travel more within the country. Continuing she said: “I want to emphasise that enjoyment of Nigeria’s assets is not for the elite alone. In fact, it’s more for people at the grassroots level and those that can’t afford to go abroad. We want Nigerians to be so patriotic that they are happy to enjoy Nigeria. Let us make the most of what we have and not cry about what we don’t have. ABC has already brought in two buses, like the London double decker buses and we are going to start touring Abuja to show the world that Abuja has something to show.”

“I am happy that you have discovered what is necessary and needed to unlock the hidden potentialities of this sector. You will discover that most countries reaping bountifully from tourism today, first of all, looked inward, took tourism inventory in their countries, drove the consciousness in their own people, developed the sites, enhanced them and invited foreigners to see.

“This is exactly what Nigeria needs to do and it gladdens my heart that you are not only talking it but doing everything practically possible to bring it to be. This is good.”

This remark was made by the Comptroller-General of Nigerian Immigration Services, Mr David Parradang, when the Director-General, Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC), Mrs Sally Mbanefo, visited him in Abuja.

The Immigration boss assured NTDC of his support, especially in evolving a sustainable vision to kick-start the blossoming of the tourism sector in Nigeria. Parradang  said he was particularly happy that Mrs Mbanefo has been living up to expectation and  spreading the gospel of domestic tourism in Nigeria,  which he described ‘as the magic and a potent instrument capable of jump-starting and kindling the zeal  of tourism consciousness in the nation’.

He noted that statistic within the agency revealed that foreigners love to visit Nigeria tourism sites but informed that  some of them are skeptical about the status  and facilities available in these sites adding  ‘these are the areas which your organisation needs to work on.’

The CGI  used the opportunity to highlight  what the agency has put in place to further the cause of tourism and tourists  saying that  ‘the focal points of his administration, which is hinged on capacity building, robust border patrol, deployment of appropriate technology for  monitoring  and statistical analysis  of foreigners  and tourists in Nigeria.’

Mr. Parradang disclosed that “the Federal Government has made Nigerian visa procurement easy and smooth. “The Operation getting visa at point of entry has kicked off.  There are facilities on ground now, where you can renew your visa in a day and there is no room for delay in obtaining Nigeria visa any longer.”

He reiterated the desire of the agency not only to partner with NTDC, but to collaborate in any way that could add value to the domestic tourism vision of Mrs. Mbanefo.  “Whatever the case is and may be, just be assured that the Nigeria Immigration Service is not only in alliance with your vision of promoting domestic tourism but ready to support and collaborate with your corporation for the lifting of Nigeria’s tourism status among the comity of tourism states.”

Mrs. Mbanefo commended the immigration boss for having a good grasp of the tourism sector saying, ‘I am impressed by your brilliant overview and suggestion about the tourism sector, which revealed the fact that you are not only a thoroughbred immigration boss but one with informed global perspective of tourism trends.

‘This is a good sign for us at NTDC. NIS is a very important stakeholder to NTDC and it will be unwise if I did not pay respect to you and seek collaboration and advice. As partner in progress, we want a strong partnership with Nigeria Immigration Service, in the area of easy Visa regime for the entire tourists that will attract foreign investors. She disclosed that ‘we are here to strengthen and lubricate  the chord of  relationship and collaboration, which should be between  the Immigration Service and NTDC, the two Siamese twins of the travel and tourism sector.’

Mrs Mbanefo said no tourism agency can make any meaningful impact without a strategic partnership with the immigration service. “Our paying you this visit is to tell and show you our respect and appreciation of your import and essence to the tourism sector and the domestic tourism vision. We are happy that we met a man who is well grounded in what we are about to sell to him. This has made my work smooth,” she said.

She disclosed that no serious tourism driver of a nation would undermine the position and essence of Immigration service because “statistical data and effective border control is essential to the growth of tourism and protection of the nation’s security and integrity”

Mrs. Mbanefo commended the Immigration boss for his sense of duty and the warm reception accorded her delegation. “We commend you for your warm reception, enlightenment and assurance of collaboration and support, we are leaving here re-energised, re-invigorated  and with the assurance of having a productive partner in Nigeria Immigration Service,” she said.
