  • Sallah: Companion, MSSN felicitate with Muslims

The Companion and Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN) Lagos State Area Unit have congratulated Muslims worldwide over their successful completion of the 1439AH Ramadan.

According to The Companion National Amir, Alhaji Thabit Wale Sonaike, the last one month has been a period of consciousness and closeness to Allah by all Muslims with the hope of earning His pleasure and paradise.

Sonaike said: “We call on Muslims to celebrate in moderation bearing in mind that several Muslims are in deprivation in one form or another. We remember fellow Nigerians in Internally Displaced (I.D.) Camps and call on the federal government to accelerate restoration to normalcy so that the people can return to their homes to live normal lives.

“The Companion is also worried that national budget has not been signed into law by the President several weeks after receiving the Appropriation bill from the National Assembly. This is definitely not good for any economy much less an economy that has just recovered from the recession. This avoidable delay and lackadaisical attitude towards the budgetary process can never promote accelerated economic development much less our aspiration to be among the top 20 economies of the world. We call on the government at both executive and legislative arms to jointly and objectively overhaul the current budgetary process in the overall interest of the national economy.”

MSSN Amir Dr Saheed Ashafa thanked Allah for the relative peace enjoyed in the country in the holy month, adding that Muslims must not relent in engaging in continuous prayer for Nigeria.

He urged Nigerian leaders to be sincere with their electoral promises as the 2019 general election approaches.

Ashafa said: “Our leaders should always remember that they will account for their actions before God. Regardless of our diverse nature, they should champion positions that would foster unity, growth and development of our dear country.

“They should shun politics of violence and hatred in all their conducts. As the 2019 election is near, we appeal to them not to trigger hatred, disaffection and as well breach peace in the society.”

  • MSSN feeds 5000 fasting Muslims

The Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN) Lagos State Area Unit has held grand Iftar for 5000 at the Alausa Secretariat Mosque, Ikeja.

The event also featured a special prayer for the nation.

Its Amir, Dr Saheed Ashafa said the feeding was to inculcate the culture of charity, welfarism and love in the Muslims.

He urged Muslims to imbibe the spirit of good neighbourliness in relating with the public.

Ashafa said assisting the needy should be of utmost priority to the Muslims at all times, saying such gesture would solve many socio-cultural problems confronting the masses.

He called on government to establish a synergy with religious leaders and help strengthen the frontiers of religion to ensure a crisis-free society.

The guest speaker, Sheikh Abdul Ganiy Abdul Hadi enjoined Muslim youths to use the opportunity of the fasting season to improve on their intellectual capacity particularly the in-depth knowledge of Islam.

He called on Muslims to be politically conscious and keep up with happenings in national and global politics.

“As Muslims, our responsibilities are enormous. People have expectations for us and that’s why we have to be models for people in the society by way of doing the right things at all times. We have to live to expectations. We’ve got to be tolerant of adherents of other religions. That’s how we can be better as a people,” Sheikh Abdul Hadi said.

  • Aregbe, Amosun hails MSSN on Adegbite

Osun State Governor Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola and his Ogun state counterpart Ibikunle Amosun have commended the Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN), Lagos State Area Unit for honouring the former Secretary-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, the late Dr AbdulLateef Adegbite with a Quran Competition.

The duo, alongside businessman, Managing Director of Yinka Folawiyo Group, Mr. Tunde Folawiyo, spoke at the grand finale of the 15th edition of the Lagos Qur’an Competition organised in honour of the late Adegbite at the University of Lagos Main Auditorium, Akoka.

They commented the youth who participated in the competition for developing the zeal to memorise the Qur’an.

In the keenly contested competition, 18 reciters emerge as winners in the various categories of the competition after being tested on memorisation, pronunciation, voice sonority, composition and dressing.

Amosun, who was represented by a Consultant to Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission (OGSIEC) Alhaji Musibau Oyefeso, said he was encouraged to see young Muslims learn the Qur’an, saying that would help to instill morality in the society.

“I am proud to be associated with this. It is a great thing to see our youths learn the words of Allah and commit it to their hearts. I congratulate all the participants,” Amosun said.

Aregbesola, represented by the Chairman of Ijede Local Council Development Area, Salis Fatiu Jimoh, said memorising the Qur’an was part of the key to success, adding that “this is a worthy cause. It will go a long way to reduce crime in the society.”

The late Adegbite’s son, Bashorun Ladi Adegbite, who spoke on behalf of the Adegbite family, praised the organiser, MSSN Lagos, for hosting the programme in the name of his father, saying members of the family were proud to be associated with such a programme.

He explained that the theme of the competition – “Hope for the Hopeless” – matched the personality of his late father.

The late Adegbite, he said, was a legend of his time that did his best to promote positive things in all facets of his life as a youth leader, as a teacher, a lawyer, a traditional leader and for the most part as a Muslim.

MSSN Lagos State President Dr Saheed Ashafa, lamented that social media was affecting the spiritual lives of the youths.

“It is crystal clear to everyone that Muslim youths are far away from the Book of Allah and this is not farfetched from the influence of modern technologies and social media, Muslims generally have now made phones and other gadgets companions at the expense of the Glorious Qur’an,” he said.

  • Punish perpetrators, says MSSN

The Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN) Lagos State Area Unit yesterday described the incident as shocking and worrisome.

Its President, Dr Saheed Ashafa, in a statement, urged the government and security agencies to secure schools to ensure pupils’ safety.

He said pupils were the victims of insecurity in the state, noting that the perpetrators must be brought to book.

Ashafa said: “We are shocked to witness a repeat of this ugly situation within a very short span of time. We advice the government to take a decisive step to put a stop to the occurrence of this kind of experience subsequently. We suggest that well-equipped security personnel should be permanently stationed in our schools, in addition to other intelligence measures.

“As we sympathise with the families of the victims, we urge the state and security agencies to deplore all necessary apparatus to regain freedom for the victims.

“This occurrence should serve as a charge and reminder that even at 50 years of creation, everything is not perfect yet. The Lagos State Government needs to intensify effort in improving the state and the standard of education.

“We equally urge members of public to complement the efforts of government in ensuring adequate security in our schools by making necessary information available.”

  • MSSN Amirah urges Lagos to implement hijab verdict

MSSN Amirah urges Lagos to implement hijab verdict

The Amirah of Lagos State Area Unit Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN), Hajia Hafsah Badru, yesterday urged the Lagos State Government to immediately implement the Court of Appeal ruling on the right of female pupils to wear hijab (Islamic headscarf) in public primary and secondary schools across the state.

A special five-man panel of the Court of Appeal, Lagos Division, yesterday set aside the judgment of Justice Modupe Onyeabor of an Ikeja High Court, on October 17, 2014, which banned pupils in state-owned primary and secondary schools from wearing the hijab on their school uniforms.

In a unanimous decision, the court, presided over by Justice A. B. Gumel held that the appeal was meritorious and should be allowed.

It also held that the refusal to allow female Muslim pupils wear the hijab “will amount to discrimination on the ground of their religion.”

Other Justices in the panel are Justice M. Fasanmi, Justice A. Jauro, Justice J. S. Ikyegh and Justice I. Jombo Ofor.

Justice Gumel held that “the wearing hijab is an Islamic injunction and also an act of worship,” hence it will constitute “a clear violation of the appellants’ constitutionally guaranteed rights to stop them from wearing the hijab in public schools.”

Hajia Badru urged stakeholders in the Education sector, especially the principals and teachers, to abide by the ruling.

She said it would be an offence to molest or harass any female pupil who wears hijab on her uniform henceforth, adding that MSSN would not hesitate to take necessary action in accordance with the law to ensure justice for any pupil molested or harassed.

The Amirah urged all female pupils to ensure the proper use of the hijab, because it is a garment of honour, adding: “They should hold the moral teaching which hijab has brought and strive towards academic excellence. They should emulate Asiyah  AbdulKareem, who despite the persecution, still excel, to the point of recognition by the Lagos State government,” she said.

She thanked the Adetola Kazeem SAN-led legal team and all those who joined in the struggle from onset, saying: “Verily at the end of the tunnel, there is light.”

    MUSWEN, MSSN call for transparency

The Muslim Ummah of the South West Nigeria (MUSWEN) and Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN), Lagos State Area Unit have urged Nigerian leaders to be transparent and accountable in governance.

MUSWEN thanked Allah for “enabling us to see its (Ramadan) end alive with good health and peaceful coexistence.

It urged Muslims to remember the social and spiritual gains of the sacred month and fulfil their covenant with Allah.

“We should remember to pay our mandatory Zakatul-Fitr and be kind to the less privileged ones in our celebrations. Such celebrations should exemplify the remorse and humility we imbibed in the sacred month of Ramadan. We urge our Imams in all Mosques to pray specially at the Eid grounds today for peace and tranquillity in Nigeria,” MUSWEN said.

MSSN Amir (President) Mallam Saheed Ashafa, said Nigeria would witness tremendous growth if both leaders and followers were ready to sacrifice for the country.

He said: “In the spirit of celebration, it is important not to forget the essence of Eid-el Fitri, among which is sacrifice. If all and sundry adhere to the teachings and virtues of Eid-el Fitri, Nigeria won’t be in its pitiable state today.

“We assert that today is another day for both leaders and followers in the country to assess how our actions and inactions have benefited or ruin our country. Like Prophet Muhammad, we must be accountable and transparent in our dealings. Apart from being accountable on earth, we must also prepare for questioning in the hereafter.

“If our leaders have been accountable from inception, we will not find ourselves in a situation where many states cannot pay salaries without borrowing. It saddening that many workers are still being owed and will be constrained to celebrating Eid-il Fitri as they really wished.”
