    MTN Champs Season 3 closes in style as young stars shine in Lagos

    The Lagos edition of the MTN Champs Season 3 Continental Relays wrapped up in spectacular fashion on Saturday, April 12, after days of electrifying track and field competition at the Yaba College of Technology (Yabatech) and University of Lagos (UNILAG) sports complexes.

    The event spotlighted a new wave of athletic talent, with Lucy Nwankwo impressing in the junior women’s 100m, Iyanuoluwa Bada dominating the senior women’s 100m, and Favor Ashe clinching victory in the senior men’s 100m. 

    One of the event’s most memorable moments came from 13-year-old Micheal Odogu, who set a new high jump record, earning admiration from spectators and officials alike.

    A historic milestone was reached on Day 3 as Nigeria hosted its first-ever mixed 4x100m relay—recently approved for the Olympics—signaling a progressive leap for the country’s athletics landscape.

    The grand finale at Yabatech drew an impressive crowd of dignitaries from across Nigeria and the African sports community. 

    Notable attendees included Lekan Fatodu, Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission; Pastor Emmanuel Ebong, Vice President II of the Nigerian School Sport Federation; and Chief Solomon Ogba, First Vice President of the Nigerian Olympic Committee.

    In her closing remarks, Ugonwa Nwoye, Chief Customer Relations Officer of MTN Nigeria, reflected on the event’s success and the bright future it signals for athletics in the country.

    She said, “From the beginning, the objective of Champs has been to create a platform that identifies, nurtures and builds future olympians that will represent Nigeria on the world stage. We set out to give young athletes the kind of visibility, opportunity and support that can change the trajectory of their lives. I am proud to say that we have done just that.”

    Summarizing the four-day events, she referenced broken records and the unwinding determination of the athletes,.

     “Beyond medals and victories, we have also built something bigger – a moment that says to every young person watching ‘you are seen and your future is full of possibilities

     To our great city, Lagos of the state of aquatic splendour, thank you for embracing us. To the family and fans who filled the stands and shed, you brought the spirit to this event. MTN Champs is not just an event. It’s a growing legacy and from here, we look forward to bigger dreams, more inspiring stories and a future where everyone has a stage to shine. Thank you and see you at the MTN Champs grand finale in Uyo. Let us all go make a difference,” she said.

    Five-time Olympian and MTN Champs Season 3 ambassador, Mary Onyali, was also present at the event. She proudly carried the MTN Champs torch as she led the ceremonial procession, joined by MTN executives and other dignitaries. The procession concluded at the ceremonial arch, where keynote speeches were delivered and awards were presented.

    Fatodu, representing Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, expressed his satisfaction with the event. “What an extraordinary journey this has been.” He congratulated the participants, organizers and supporters, noting their involvement as crucial to the success of the event. “This competition has not only provided the platform for young athletes to showcase their abilities but also played a pivotal role in nurturing the next generation of sport stars. The enthusiasm and commitment displayed by these young individuals are a testament to the bright future of athletics in Lagos state and Nigeria at large.”

    On MTN’s involvement in national sports development, he stated: “On behalf of the governor, we are deeply grateful to MTN Nigeria for their unwavering support and commitment to sports development and talent identification. I say a big thank you to MTN Nigeria for their bold investment in the dreams of young Nigerians. You have proven once again that MTN is more than just a telecom giant. You are a transformational partner in nation building.”

    The Lagos edition of the MTN Champs drew over 2,500 entries from 155 schools, with athletes competing across four age categories: Cadet (U-14), Youth (U-17), Junior (U-20), and Senior. The event featured a range of track and field disciplines, including sprints, relays, high jump, and long jump. Adding a vibrant international flair, the Continental Relays welcomed athletes from Benin Republic, Togo, and Côte d’Ivoire, elevating the level of competition and cross-border camaraderie.

    As MTN Champs Season 3 continues, all eyes turn to Uyo, where the grand finale will be held at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium from April 30 to May 3.

    MTN Champs Lagos continental relays kicks off

    The MTN Champs Continental Relay Competitions commenced on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, with an official flag-off ceremony at the Yabatech Sports Complex in Lagos. The event was graced by senior executives from MTN Nigeria, alongside distinguished figures from the Nigerian sports ecosystem.

    In attendance were Mr. Lekan Fatodu, Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission who representing Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu; Mr. Yusuf Ali, Chief Executive Officer of the Elite Athlete Development & Podium Board, National Sports Commission; Pastor Emmanuel Ebong, Vice President of the Nigeria School Sports Federation (NSSF); Dr. Solomon Alao, South West Representative and Board Member of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria; and Mr. Bambo Akani, Chief Executive Officer of Making of Champions (MoC).

    A key highlight of the opening ceremony was the presence of five-time Olympian and event Flag Bearer, Mary Onyali, who led a symbolic walk around the stadium with attending dignitaries. 

    The procession concluded at the ceremonial archway, where the official ribbon-cutting took place. 

    Fatodu formally declared the competition open, marking the beginning of what promises to be an exciting series of relay events.

    Fatodu emphasised the significance of collaboration between the public and private sectors in driving development, saying: “There is a refrain that the government has no business in business, but the business the government has in business is to continue to build partnerships with people like MTN who truly know how to run business, who not only run their business, but are constantly looking at their operational environment where human capacity can be acknowledged, developed and opportunities can be given to all citizens to have multiple options.” He concluded by charging the athletes to give their best during their competitions this week.

    The ceremony also featured a march-past, led by renowned influencer and social advocate, Flag Boy.

    Participating in the procession were students from various competing schools—Corona, Igbobi College, Federal Government College Ijanikin, Basil International College—as well as Team MTN, composed of standout athletes from Seasons 1 and 2 who are now part of the MoC Academy.

    Reiterating MTN’s commitment to grassroots sports development, Ayham Moussa, Chief Operating Officer of MTN Nigeria, stated: “At MTN, we are heavily invested in football and athletics because we believe in the power of sports as a catalyst for development. Season 3 of MTN Champs began in Benin where over 2000 young athletes stepped onto the track to showcase their talents, passion and determination to be the best.

    “Today, we are set for a historic milestone as we begin the second leg of the MTN Champs Season 3. Lagos is the centre of excellence, home to both established and budding athletes. Let’s get ready for a most exciting display of talents and passion from these young athletes. Let’s get ready to see records broken and new ones set. Let’s get ready to see the birth of future Olympians.”

    The Lagos continental relays continue simultaneously at  Yabatech and the UNILAG sports complexes from April 9 to April 12.

    MTN Champs ends colourfully in Abuja

    The journey of eight weeks across four different cities of the MTN Schools’ Athletics Championships tagged MTN Champs came to an exciting and colourful ending at the Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abuja, as over 800 athletes competed at the Grand Final.

    The event attracted dignitaries from MTN, Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Nigeria School Sports Federation (NSSF) and organisers – Making of Champions (MoC).

    For the Abuja leg, Foundation Science emerged winners in the Cadet (U-14) Girls’ category, finishing ahead of Nigerian Tulip International (33 points) and Army Day (16 points).

    However, Army Day bounced back in the Cadet Boys’ class to beat Doveland International (34 points) and Foundation Science (33 points).

    Nigerian Tulip International dominated the Youth (U-17) Girls’ category and they were followed by Army Day (33 points) and Zuba Government Secondary School (30 points) respectively.

    Chosen International was the team to beat in the Youth Boys category while Foundation Science was 2nd with 37 points, and Doveland International came third.

    Team MVP emerged the top team in the Junior (U-23) category followed by Coach Felix Academics and Karu Government Day .

    The six MVPs and four ‘Golden Performers’ from MTN CHAMPS Abuja were unveiled at the end of the competition.

    Team MVP’s pair of Faidah Abdulhamed and Lucky Ebe were named MVPs of the Cadet Girls’ and Boys’ categories respectively. Abdulhamed claimed a silver medal in the 100m and Bronze in the 200m. On his own part, Ebe, a hearing-impaired athlete, stormed to victory in the sprint double to earn a place on the list.Miracle Ezechukwu was unbeaten across the Youth Girls’ 100m and 200m and named MVP in that category. Hamza Dalhatu emerged Youth Boys’ MVP, courtesy of his silver medal in the 200m.

    Dynamic’s Comfort Sule secured her spot as Junior Girls’ MVP after racing to a bronze medal in the 200m. Osama Chibueze outclassed all his competitors in the Junior Boys 100m and 200m, striking GOLD in both events to become Junior Boys’ MVP.

    The four Golden Performers were Chizoba Gift Onyemauwa, Fervent Imoh, Chigozie Kanu and Khalil Saleh. 20 Athletes across the four locations have been shortlisted in the final selection phase, with 10 of them eventually making it into the MoC Academy sponsored by MTN.

    Nearly 800 Athletes are set to engage in a battle for superiority at the fourth leg and Grand Final of MTN CHAMPS, which will begin today to Sunday December 3, at the Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abuja.

    At a press conference held in Abuja during the week, to herald the highly anticipated event, MTN’s Chief Marketing Officer Adia Sowho expressed her pleasure at the level of competition on display across the first three legs of CHAMPS, and is looking forward to an exciting climax.

    Recounting MoC’s sojourn within the Nigerian Athletics landscape in the past decade, MoC Founder Bambo Akani described the circumstances that led to the birth of MTN CHAMPS. “This has been a journey that started about 10 years ago for Making of Champions when we saw that there was a gap in Nigeria and we needed something to fill that gap. What’s interesting is that we went to Jamaica in 2013 (during their CHAMPS) and filmed a documentary on Nigeria’s history at the Olympics, and what we saw there convinced us that this needed to happen in Nigeria,” Akani said.

    Secretary General of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) Rita Mosindi appreciated the support of MTN in providing a competition of this calibre which has helped to curb the menace of age-cheating.

    Treasurer of the Nigeria School Sports Federation (NSSF) Oba Funsho Usman is confident that the athletes would put up impressive performances when the competition gets underway today.
