Ajah Excel Anayo, a graduate of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), has shared how the MTN Foundation scholarship saved him from dropping out of school and paving the way for his future success.

After graduating as the best student in the 2008 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) at Federal Government College (FGC) Okigwe, Anayo faced severe financial challenges that delayed his ability to write the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) exam until 2011.

Despite scoring 277 in JAMB and 264 in the post-UTME, securing him admission to study Information Management Technology at FUTO, he struggled to afford university fees.

In his first year, he received assistance from friends and the principal of his former school, Mrs. Rose Nwachukwu, who paid his school fees, allowing him to complete his first-year exams, where he emerged top of his class with a 4.45 GPA. However, in his second year, the financial burden became overwhelming once again.

The scholarship covered his school fees, allowed him to purchase his first laptop, and helped him start a small business while continuing his studies. Ajah received MTN’s support until his graduation.

In gratitude for the life-changing opportunity, Ajah launched a platform called Nigerian University Scholarships in 2013, to help other students in financial need access scholarship information. This platform has since grown into WorldScholarshipForum.com, which now serves over 2 million students monthly, providing resources on scholarships and financial aid.

Today, Anayo is the founder of Silicon Africa, a company that hosts SMFest, one of Nigeria’s largest tech innovation conferences. He credits the MTN Foundation for providing the support that made his success possible, stating that the organization “restored hope to a hopeless child.”

  • Police tighten security around South African firms

THERE was tight security on Wednesday around business premises linked to South Africans to  stop further attacks by Nigerians who were angered by the killings and attacks on Nigerians and their businesses in South Africa

Some youths on Tuesday attacked facilities belonging to MTN Nigeria, Shoprite and PEP stores in Lagos, Uyo, Ibadan and other parts of the country.

There was calm in Lagos on Wednesday after Tuesday’s storm.

The MTN office located on the Bodija-Agodi Secretariat Road, Ibadan, Oyo State was set ablaze on Tuesday night.

Residents said the perpetrators attacked the security men on duty around 11pm and threw petrol bombs at the building.

Another account said two young men stormed the facility on a motorcycle to carry out the attack after beating up the security guards on duty.

Spokesman of the Police in Oyo State Gbenga Fadeyi, confirmed the attacks, adding that all South African investments in state had been secured.

When The Nation visited MTN office, officials of the state Anti-crime Task Force and officials of the Oyo State Road Transport Management Agency (OYRTMA) were on standby.

The management of MTN Nigeria Wednesday confirmed the attacks on its facilities in three major cities of Lagos, Ibadan and Uyo.

In a statement, the Company Secretary, Uto Ukpanah, explained that sequel to the attacks and the premium it  placed on its human capital and other stakeholders, all service centres and offices will remain shut.

Ukpanah said: “MTN Nigeria Communications Plc confirms that over the last day, our facilities, customers and some of our stakeholders have been the subject of attacks in retaliation for the ongoing xenophobia situation in South Africa. We have confirmed reports of attacks in Lagos, Ibadan and Uyo.

“While we remain committed to providing uninterrupted services, the safety and security of our customers, staff and partners is our primary concern. All MTN stores and service centres will therefore be closed as a precaution until further notice. MTN condemns any acts of violence, prejudice and xenophobia and remains absolutely committed to ensuring a peaceful harmonious and respectful relationship with all communities in Nigeria and across Africa.

“We are engaging all relevant authorities in this regard and we urge them to act swiftly to reduce tensions both in South Africa and Nigeria. We will provide further updates as and when possible.”

The police moved fast on Wednesday to prevent further attacks by deploying their men to secure the premises of South African firms operating in Nigeria.

Such companies include MTN, PEP, Shoprite, Dstv, Gotv and Multichoice.

Security personnel were deployed in MTN offices in Edo, Kaduna, Kano and Ondo states, Shoprite malls in Onitsha, Abuja and Ondo states.

There was pandemonium in Abuja as hundreds of protesters stormed the Shoprite Mall on the Abuja Airport Road near Lugbe.

The mainly-youths protesters, who were prevented by police and soldiers from attacking the mall,  burnt used tyres and damaged a billboard.

They hurled stones at the security operatives, situation that caused traffic snarl build-up on the highway, forcing motorists to reroute their trips.

The security operatives, who were attacked, fired teargas and bullets into the air to disperse the protesters.

An artisan opposite the Shoprite Mall, who was hit by a stray bullet, was rushed to an undisclosed hospital.

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Malam Muhammad Bello, called on Abuja residents, especially students and youths, to refrain from retaliatory attacks.

He said the Federal Government was already exploiting diplomatic channels to address the issue. He appealed to residents to give peace a chance.

He warned that attacking South African business interests would have negative economic consequences for the local economy.

The MTN and Multichoice head offices in Kaduna were locked when our reporter visited yesterday.

At the MTN head office, in Abakpa, a yellow coloured banner was sighted at the main gate, bearing an inscription: “We Stand Against Xenophobia”.

Armed policemen on power bikes were strategically positioned at the MTN and Multichoice offices.

There was tight security around MTN, Shoprite and Multi-Choice (DSTV) offices in Kano. The premises were locked.

At the Civic Centre offices of MTN in Kano, customers were seen loitering around the building, hoping that they would be attended to. The ever-busy Shoprite, located on Zoo Road, was also shut.

The story was the same at the Magajin Rumfa Avenue office of DSTV, where few customers were sighted.

One of the company’s private security personnel who pleaded anonymity, said the staff of the company stopped from coming to work since Tuesday.

Some youths stormed the Shoprite Shopping Complex in Onitsha. They were, however, blocked from gaining access into the facility by the eagle-eyed security operatives.

The video of the attacks on Nigerians in South Africa which went viral on the social media had triggered the youths’ anger. They planned to attack Shoprite and other South African-owned business outfits in the commercial city.

The attention of the Police, Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) and Anambra State Vigilance, (AVS), were drawn to the unusual movement of youths as they quickly cordoned off all the roads linking the mall.

The authority at the Shopping Complex quickly ordered workers to leave the Mall to forestall any attack.

When our correspondent visited the area, the ever-busy shopping complex was deserted.

The MTN office in Awka, the Anambra State capital, offered skeletal services yesterday.

An officer, who spoke with The Nation on condition of anonymity, said: “We can’t toy with the safety of our staff and customers in view of the recent events in the country.

“We’re working from home today as we monitor situation.”

In Lagos, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu vowed to deal with troublemakers exploiting the ongoing xenophobic attacks on foreign nationals in South Africa to foment trouble in the Centre of Excellence.

Sanwo-Olu said he would not condone violence in any form on innocent residents and businesses by any person or group.

The governor urged parents to warn their wards against taking to violence, stressing that the full wrath of the law would be brought on anyone caught attacking law-abiding foreigners and businesses in the state.

He said: “We have watched the disturbing videos of attacks and vandalism against Nigerian nationals and their businesses in South Africa. These precipitated strong reactions by some Nigerians who chose to vent their anger on investments on South Africans in Lagos yesterday.

“As a government, we condemn the violence visited on innocent people by the hoodlums who attacked Shoprite and other business interests owned by South Africans in Lagos. We cannot attempt to find a solution to a criminality by committing criminality. This is not part of our values as Nigerians.

“Therefore, I wish to state categorically that Lagos will remain safe for all Nigerian citizens and law-abiding foreign nationals who are here for business.

“We will not condone any act that can lead to breakdown of law and order. I implore all residents to go about their lawful businesses without any fear. Lagos will remain open to local and foreign investments.”

Calling for calm and resfrain, Sanwo-Olu pointed out that the Federal Government had been responding to xenophobic violence in South Africa at the diplomatic level.

In Ondo, the state government ordered the deployment of security in Shoprite and MTN offices.

Acting Governor Agboola Ajayi said the deployment was sequel reports that some people planned to attack telecommunication firm in Akure, the state capital.

Armed policemen were promptly drafted to man the Shoprite gate in Alagbaka area of the state capital.

FOLLOWING the successful award of a Super-Agent License, Y’ello Digital Financial Services, “YDFS,” a subsidiary of MTN Nigeria has opened its doors to announce the launch of its super-agent network service named ‘MoMo Agent’ at an event in Abuja at the weekend.

The extensive network of MoMo Agents, MTN said, will immediately begin providing safe and accessible money transfer services to underbanked and unbanked people across Nigeria.

With this, the company joins ongoing efforts to accelerate the Central Bank of Nigeria’s drive for financial inclusion.

Speaking at the launch, the Chief Executive Officer of MTN Nigeria, Ferdi Moolman said, “I am excited by the possibilities. We are fortunate to be part of the telecoms industry which underpins the digital economy and is critical to inclusive development and the future economic growth of this great nation. The firm said that the MoMo Agent Network compliments existing banking services by extending access to simple money transfer services and other financial services nationwide.

YDFS Director, Usoro Usoro, noted “Our MoMo Agent network opens up a host of opportunities, creating employment and facilitating business in rural and urban areas. Leveraging MTN’s extensive distribution network and capabilities, we are putting financial services within easy reach.

“Going forward, anyone, anywhere in Nigeria can send and receive money through a MoMo Agent in their neighbourhood. We intend to expand the range of financial services offered once the Central Bank grants approval for a Payment Banking license.”

Y’ello Digital Financial Services plan to rollout about 500,000 Agents spread across all states and the Federal Capital Territory.

  • MTN wraps up first phase of ASAP

Health experts and partner organisations, led by MTN Nigeria, have concluded the pilot phase of the multi-stakeholder intervention in the fight against substance abuse among youths in Nigeria. After seven months of multiple hard-hitting on-ground activities in Abuja, Lagos, Imo, Rivers, and Bauchi states, the first phase of the widely successful multi-stakeholder Anti-Substance Abuse Programme (ASAP) ended in Kano State last month.

The programme, which is geared at combating the increasing rate of first-time drug-use among young Nigerians, was built on a multi-sectoral approach that amasses a network of stakeholder organisations spanning non-profit organisations, regulatory agencies, professional associations, advocacy champions and individual experts. Stakeholders include the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA); the Police; Federation of Muslim Women’s Associations in Nigeria (FOMWAN); Christians Against Drug Abuse Mission (CADAM); Freedom Foundation, etc.

During a courtesy visit by MTN ASAP team to the Government House in Kano State, deputy governor of Kano State, Dr. Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, commended the effort of the MTN Foundation in the fight against substance abuse. ”I want to thank MTN Foundation, we see all the good works you’ve been doing. It is truly commendable especially against substance abuse and wellness of communities with the ‘What Can We Do Together’ initiative. The government of Kano is not also sitting back with this menace of substance abuse. We are already working towards setting up an agency to look into substance abuse and we will very much like to work with MTN on this important project. There is so much we can achieve if we collaborate. We have a huge problem on our hands but I am confident we can defeat this problem, especially when corporations become more aware and responsible just like MTN has done.”

Executive Secretary, MTN Foundation, Nonny Ugboma, gave a glimpse into the programme’s future: ”After embarking on this project that has taken us through various nooks and crannies of the country, and listening to the feedback from thousands of young students and volunteers, it has become apparent that our mission has only just begun. For the millions of young Nigerians on the verge of the decision on first-time drug-use, we will continue this campaign aimed at dissuading them. We are humbled by what we have all been able to achieve with the pilot and are expectant for the millions that will be reached in the subsequent phases.”

Millions of young Nigerians have been inspired by the programme’s multi-faceted approach that has included direct engagement, digital empowerment, stakeholder collaboration and anti-substance abuse programme. Following activations in over 125 secondary schools, 16 tertiary institutions, 30 motor parks and markets, influencer workshops, plans are being implemented for an even more targeted second phase. This is expected to continue to affect wide-sweeping changes in various states in Nigeria.

  • MTN Nigeria invests N2tr as market value closes at N2.6tr

MTN Nigeria Communications Plc has invested more than N2 trillion in its business operations over the past 18 years. The market value of MTN Nigeria closed at the weekend at N2.585 trillion.

MTN Nigeria, in a regulatory filing at the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) at the weekend, indicated that it has invested more than N2 trillion since incorporation in 2001.

MTN Nigeria reiterated its commitments to the Nigerian economy, noting that it had paid more than N1.7 trillion in taxes, levies and other regulatory fees in its nearly two decades of existence.

The market value of MTN Nigeria dropped by 1.59 per cent to close weekend at N2.585 trillion. The share price decline came on the heels of what the telecommunications company described as “technical disagreement” with the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) over the tax treatment of the N330 billion fine imposed on the company for failing to deactivate more than five million unregistered SIM cards. MTN Nigeria had completed the payment of the N330 billion fine in May 2019 but the tax treatment remains a subject of judicial review at the Tax Tribunal. MTN Nigeria believes the N330b fine should be treated as part of operating cost and not subjected to any other tax but FIRS holds that the fine should be subjected to tax.

MTN Nigeria has remained Nigeria’s second largest quoted company since listing on the NSE in May 2019. MTN Nigeria last month earmarked N60 billion as interim cash dividend to shareholders as it released its first earnings report as a quoted company.

The board of the telco indicated shareholders will receive a dividend per share of N2.95 for the first half ended June 30, 2019. This however represented a drop of 17.83 per cent from N3.59 per share paid for the first half of 2018.

Key extracts of the six-month report for the period ended June 30, 2019 showed that MTN Nigeria’s profit before tax rose by 30.9 per cent to N141.8 billion in first half 2019 as against N108.35 billion recorded in comparable period of 2018. Profit after tax grew by 34.8 per cent from N73.4 billion to N98.93 billion. Total turnover grew by 12.12 per cent to N566.95 billion as against N505.67 billion. Operating profit had risen by 39.49 per cent from N136.50 billion to N190.4 billion. Earnings per share rose by 34.8 per cent to N4.86 compared with N3.61.

The report showed that the telco’s mobile subscribers increased by 3.3 million within the first six months of this year to 61.5 million while service revenue increased by 12.2 per cent. Voice revenue increased by 11.4 per cent, data revenue rose by 31.7 per cent while fintech revenue increased by 21.2 per cent. However, digital revenue dropped by 64.5 per cent. The company’s earnings before interest, tax depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) rose by 40 per cent to N304.9 billion while EBITDA margin improved by 10.7 percentage points to 53.8 per cent.

Nigeria is MTN’s largest market, accounting for one-third of the South African Group’s business. The telco last week announced that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has granted its subsidiary, Yello Digital Financial Services Limited (YDFS), full Super Agent Licence. The licence will enable MTN Nigeria to convert its existing airtime agents and recruit other small businesses to distribute financial services.

The telco stated that the Super Agent Licence will enable it to pursue its fintech strategy, as part of efforts to deepen financial inclusion in Nigeria.

Chief Executive Officer, MTN Nigeria Communications Plc, Ferdi Moolman described the first half performance as a solid performance as the company continued to invest to improve network quality and expand 4G coverage.

He noted that recent work on revamping data prices and accelerating 4G network has put the company in a strong competitive position to offer more value to customers and provide new impetus for overall corporate growth.

He said the listing of the company on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) in May 2019 demonstrated the company’s commitment to the Nigerian market while providing opportunity to domestic investors to participate in and benefit from the company’s growth.

“Our overriding priority for the rest of the year is to focus on our BRIGHT strategy to build a sustainable business and create value for customers. We will continue to progress in the second half of the year making improvements to our network experience, subscriber growth and enhance operational efficiency. We expect lower data pricing and our acceleration of the 4G network expansion to bolster the acquisition of customers and data traffic volumes in the second half,” Moolman said.
