    MTN launches comedy platform

Telecom service provider, MTN Nigeria has launched a digital comedy platform tagged Comedy+.

According to its management, the platform, which aims to boost Nigeria’s comedy industry, will aggregate indigenous comedy content, serve as a source of income for comedians as well as ensure on-demand access to comedy content for subscribers.

Speaking during the launch of the unique platform, the General Manager, Brands and Communications, MTN Nigeria, Richard Iweanoge said that the introduction of the app aligns with MTN’s mandate of providing life-enriching products and services for subscribers.

“The launch of this unique platform is borne out of the need to fill the yawning gap in the comedy sector. Comedy in Nigeria is fast assuming a critical position given its exponential growth and there is a need for us to harness the potentials of the sector and ensure that there is mutual benefit for all the key stakeholders,” he said.

Iweanoge further added that the Comedy+ platform will ride on the blueprint of its successful sister app, Music+ which is today Africa’s largest digital music service.

Speaking on the benefits of the app, Iweanoge stated that comedy+ subscribers will have access to tons of comedy contents by simply downloading the app on their mobile phones from the respective app stores, adding that a one month free access period is available upon first time download and log-in while subsequent access is subscription based.

Present at the launch were members of Nigeria’s comedy community including Ali Baba, Koffi, Saka, Nedu, Ushbebe, Emmaohmygod, Senator, Etinosa, Longmancomedian, MCShakara, Stillringing, Mark Angel, Monica Friday, Wofaifada, Josh2funny, Ebiye, Deeone, Bellokreb, Romeowj.

Also speaking on the initiative, veteran comedian, Ali Baba, described it as a very welcome development that is coming a time when the comedy industry is in dire need of re-organization.

“We are very happy to welcome this platform. MTN has done well by introducing this platform at a time when Nigerian comedians are feeling short changed,” he stated.

  • Xenophobia: Attack on MTN, others not in our interest

Xenophobia: Attack on MTN, others not in our interest

Varied reactions have greeted the xenophobic incidence against Nigerian-owned businesses in South Africa and the reprisal attacks against MTN and other South African interests here in Nigeria. While there were strident criticisms against xenophobia in any part of the globe, the recourse to self-help in its resolution was denounced, report Simeon Ebulu and Okwy Iroegbu-Chikezie

The xenophobic attacks in South Africa against Nigerians and their businesses and the counter attacks on MTN Nigeria  and other  South African  firms in this clime have been described as unhealthy and should be nipped in the bud.

Stakeholders, who bared their minds on the issue, agreed that the trend should not be allowed to continue.

The Senior Partner/Director, Africa Region Board of PKF Professional Services, an Accounting and Business Advisory firm, Tajudeen Akande, said a categorical ‘No’ to the inquisition as to whether the development was healthy, either to South Africa or Nigeria, if we decide to pay them back in their own coin.

“No it doesn’t help,” he said, adding that it will adversely affect their economy.

“The last time I had them send trainers here, or bring conferences here was maybe, 2003 or so. Unfortunately, South Africa is doing this, which is not going to be good for their economy. It shouldn’t happen, but unfortunately, it is happening,” he stated.

“There was a time I proposed to have a board meeting in South Africa, I was like, can we do it through teleconference or we go to another place. Of course if I can react that way, a big investor will also react that way,” he said, pointing out that “on the diplomatic level, we shouldn’t be doing a retaliatory thing with MTN because, as he put it, “ we are beyond that. As long as we are able to demonstrate that we are beyond that, then we are in a position of strength,” he stated.

Citing other climes, Akande said: “Look at what is in the Middle East, you see that in whatever way you see it, Britain has handled it above emotional reaction. You won’t see the kind of emotional reaction you will see from Russia or Trump’s America of today,” adding,  “we must understand that it is in their psyche. Those people the (South Africans), since they were born, they have known nothing other than struggle.”

Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) President, Dr. Frank Udemba Jacobs, who condemned the xenophobic attacks as unhelpful and unhealthy for businesses,   distanced himself from the retaliatory attacks  on  South African business interests. “I don’t think it’s the right thing,” he said, adding, you don’t pay violence with violence.” Udemba, who was a bit hesitant in responding to the issue on the ground that those affected were not manufacturers with whom he superintends, said the action of those who embarked on the reprisal attacks in Nigeria, was wrong, pointing out that the incident would affect Nigerians in the long-run. “it’s not the right thing to do, obviously it is going to affect Nigerians who work in those organisations,” if the development is allowed to fester and not checked. He said those who took part in the exercise, “were not properly advised.”

Udemba called for a resolution of the issues through diplomatic channels by the embassies of Nigeria and South Africa.

Also,  a real estate consultant/ Chief Executive Officer, D. L. Maurice Concern, Mr. Maurice David, told The Nation that the  retaliatory action was like using a knife to cut oneself.

He said: “If we react against MTN, we are reacting against thousands of Nigerian families that are employed by this outfit. If we react against DSTV, we are going against the daily bread – winners of many families. If we go against Stanbic IBTC, we are sending thousands of Nigerians into the labour market thereby worsening the already bad economy of many homes.

“ It will have an adverse effect on the nation’s economy, crime rate will soar due to the probable high number of people that will be affected and that will consequently join the unemployment market,” he stated.

The Managing Director, Infinite Holdings Limited, Mr. Archibong Williams, a company with core interest in  renewable energy, telecommunications and safety systems engineering, said since the world has become a global village for business activities and relationships; we need each other at certain curves whether we like it or not.

He said the people attacking fellow Africans that live in their country, “seem not to belong to the global community, otherwise they wouldn’t have embarked on the hate campaign.”

The actions of the South African  xenophobics have clearly defined who they are, that they’re oblivious of the interconnectedness and dynamism of modern entrepreneurship.

He said: “Embarking on retaliatory move will worsen the situation and make mess of our big brother status in the continent.  I will rather suggest a constructive political engagement and diplomacy between the two governments.”

Also, Security Consultant and Head of Operations, APV Security Consultants, Mr. Archibong Archibong, said the xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa is a disturbing trend that has come into being in recent years.

He said the development has not augured well for businesses on both sides of the divide because it has bred distrust and suspicion among people who ordinarily should be close brothers, enjoying trade with one another and developing their economies.

He called on both governments to take a strong stand on the matter so that it does not affect bilateral trade amongst business partners from the two countries, saying the development presently has the potential of doing so  if the trend is allowed to continue.

Archibong said: ”I do not support reprisal attacks on South African interests because it amounts to biting your nose to spite your face. Such attacks will only result in placing some Nigerians in a position of disadvantage and suffering through the loss of their jobs as a result of these attacks.

“There is nothing to be gained by responding to violence with violence because Nigerians are the ones who will lose at both ends of the divide,’ he added.

South Afriacan retail giant, Shoprite Nigeria, also lent its voice in criticising the xenophobic attacks, saying it condemned any  xenophobic violence and intimidation against the citizens of other countries.

In a statement in the wake of the attacks, Shoprite said it was highly concerned at the acts of violence against foreign nationals that sporadically flare up in South Africa and the resultant rhetoric of intolerance that is now being levelled against South Africans living in Nigeria.

As a company with deep African roots which employs thousands of African nationals and most importantly works to bring low prices to 14 countries outside of South Africa, “we would like to see an end to xenophobia across the continent,” it said, adding, “ Shoprite appealed to the public to protect the human dignity and safety of all people living in both countries.

“We remain committed to working with industry and the appropriate consumer groups to engage so that decisive action is taken against those involved in violent crimes and intimidation against foreign nationals as well as to convey our strong position against xenophobia,” the company stated.

  • Court awards N.5m against MTN over unauthorised deductions

The Federal High Court in Ibadan on Wednesday awarded N530,000 to Oluwole Aluko for unathorised deductions from his mobile lines by MTN, Nigeria.

In his judgment, Justice Nathaniel Ayo-Emmanuel, held that MTN had admitted guilt by not challenging the action.

“The plaintiff has the right to allow or reject the use of a caller tune. MTN cannot force the use of any caller tune on him or anybody because it is unlawful,” the judge said.

“Though the plaintiff sought N10 million as damages, but I hold that any damage suffered must be commensurate with the claim.

“I, hereby, award a cost of N500,000 for the damages suffered and another N30,000 as cost incurred during the court process.”

The plaintiff, who is also the counsel in the case, had in 2016 instituted a N10 million suit against MTN.

He claimed that the communication company unlawfully made several deductions from three of his MTN lines for caller tunes he did not subscribe to.

However, the defence counsel, Mr. Fatiullah Tiamiyu, said MTN was not served any court process.

“That is the reason the company has not been represented in any previous sitting,” he said.

  • MTN to NCC: give us more spectrums

THE MTN Group has requested for more spectrums from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to enable it offer more services to its customers in the country.

The telecoms giant also wants the NCC to release the Visafone’s spectrum, the only surviving Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) operator in the country to it, having acquired its equity about two years ago.

Its Group Chairman/Chief Executive, Mr. Phuthuma Nhleko, who made the demands when he led a high level delegation to the NCC Headquarters in Abuja, also expressed faith in the nation’s economy despite the telco’s spat with the regulator over subscriber identity module (SIM) card registration infractions.

Nhleko, who is scheduled to step down as Group Chairman in March, said MTN Group has invested over $16billion into the Nigerian operations. “We have a very long way to go and so ask for spectrum, which is the oxygen and life blood to navigate this long and tedious investment journey because without spectrum, the sector will suffocate,” he told the NCC Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Prof Garba Danbatta.

He specifically asked for more spectrum allocation and the release of Visafone’s spectrum, whose equity shares MTN acquired in 2015.

Nhleko, who was received by Prof Danbatta and top management staff of the Commission, said the Group was willing to invest more in the sector in the years to come.

Responding to the request for spectrum, Dambatta said: “We are open to further discussion on the areas of spectrum assignment. Just put across your request for spectrum and we will check for its availability.”

Speaking on the challenges that arose from the N330b fine imposed on it by the regulator last year, he said: “We had challenges in the past, during the period of the fine, and we are grateful for the role the Commission played towards an amicable resolution.”

He also canvassed for a more level playing field “despite being a dominant player”.

He said MTN has made its mark in voice and data services and that more services like mobile financial services are underway.

A statement by Director, Public Affairs at NCC, Tony Ojobo, explained that Prof. Danbatta assured the delegation that the Commission would always play by the rules and support every operator within the ambits of the law.

Dambatta said: “I like to state that our word is our covenant.  When we take decisions, we are concerned about the stability of the industry and there is no way we can guarantee it without considering the dominant status of MTN and its obligations and if the dominant status is becoming stringent, we are open to engagement, we will be guided by what is happening in the market, to ensure the growth and development of the sector.

“The sector has contributed very well to the National Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and has shown remarkable resilience in this recession.”

Danbatta said the NCC has made a request to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on the need to relax its stringent fiscal policies towards the sector, especially its policy on foreign exchange that has asphyxiated businesses.

“The CBN governor is favourably disposed to our request and further engagement, especially towards major players who desire to import equipment to aid deployment of broadband infrastructure services and others,” he said.

The Commission, he explained, will always carry out interventions to support operators in the provision of necessary services.

  • Xenophobia: NSCDC uncovers plans to attack MTN in Bayelsa

The Bayelsa State command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has uncovered plans by some persons to attack investments of MTN in the state as a reprisal for ongoing attacks on Nigerians in South Africa.

The state’s Commander of NSCDC, Mr. Desmond Agu, said in a statement in Yenagoa on Monday that the corps was on red alert to stop aggrieved persons from destroying MTN’s facilities in the state.

Agu said intelligence reports revealed that such persons were planning to vent their anger on MTN’s masts and other facilities.

He advised persons behind such plots to desist from toeing a violent path and appealed to members of the public to report suspicious persons to the corps.

He said: “Our attention has been drawn to an intelligence report that some persons are planning to carry out an attack on South African investments especially the MTN’s telecommunication masts and other facilities following the ongoing xenophobia attacks on Nigerians in South Africa.

“Members of the public especially Bayelsans are hereby advised to desist from such acts and avoid taking laws into their hands.

“As an organisation saddled with the responsibility of protecting our critical national infrastructures, the command remains committed to deliver on its mandate.

“Members of the public are hereby advised to report persons or group of persons suspected to be planning such attacks to the command.”

Xenophobia: Students give DSTv, MTN 48hours to leave Nigeria

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) on Thursday in Abuja staged a peaceful protest against renewed xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa.

The students, led by their President, Mr Aruna Kadiri, while addressing newsmen at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja, urged the government to take concrete action to protect Nigerians in South Africa.

The students also demanded that Nigeria should severe ties with South Africa over the incessant attacks of its citizens in that country.

“We are demanding that they should break the ties between both countries if there’s any because the xenophobic attacks that had happened long time ago has come again.

“We have decided to clear the madness with madness,” he said.

He said they had burnt the South African flag at the High Commission to pass a message that “we don’t have a relationship with them any longer”.

The protesting students, who issued a 48-hour ultimatum to South African nationals to leave Nigeria, said they were earlier at MTN office in Maitama and Multi-Choice in the Central Business District of Abuja to express their grievances.

They also urged the High Commission officials to cancel the dinner organised in honour of Regina Tambo, the co-founder of ANC Youth League.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Clement Aduku, who addressed the protesting students, appealed for calmness, saying the federal government is constructively engaging the South African government over the issue.

Aduku also assured that all diplomatic means would be explored to stop the killings of Nigerian nationals in South Africa.

  • MTN FOUNDATION TREATS MUSIC LOVERS TO VALENTINE CONCERT

IT was a night to remember for fun seekers last Monday, barely 24 hours to the Valentine Day celebration, as they were treated to electrifying stage performances to usher the people into the mood of celebration.

It was more than music during the concert which took place at Agip Hall, MUSON Centre, Lagos as MTN Foundation Alumni enlivened the atmosphere with beautiful melodious sound of string and wind instruments, classical music, opera and contemporary Nigerian tune that left the audience asking for more.

The valentine concert featured different music genres from jazz, funk, blues, upbeat folklores and string instruments.

The participants who thought they had seen it all were again wowed with a scintillating drama dance performance by the MUSON scholars.

“The concert is excellent. The dance and the beautiful costumes not only added panache and glamour to the event, but also gave a new definition to the Nigerian music and how effective it can be in speaking the diverse languages of Nigerians. I am glad to be here,” a member of the audience said.

The alumni who have gone on to become masters in their chosen careers are among the over 200 brilliant, but indigent students who had their dreams of pursuing a career in music fulfilled through the Foundation’s sponsored MUSON scholar programme.

“Muson had impacted greatly in the Nigerian music and music education in general,” noted Mrs. Marion Akpata, Director of the MUSON School of Music after watching the Alumni wowed audience for hours.”

Akpata thanked the sponsors, MTN Foundation, and also praised the inventiveness of the music artistes for maintaining the high standard of the school, adding that the ultimate goal of the school was to bring back good music to the society.
