    MTV EMA 2015: goes to Milan

    MTV has announced the MTV EMA, its global awards show that celebrates the world’s hottest musical acts, to hold next year in Milan, Italy, as part of the Expo 2015 activities.

    During the awards show on November 9, host Nicki Minaj announced the 2015 MTV EMA will hold at the Mediolanum Forum in Milan on the 25th of October. Italy and the city of Milan will serve as the official location for Expo 2015, the Universal Exhibition, and the MTV EMA will close out a year of international events taking place in Milan.

    This will be the second time that MTV’s premier international awards show will hold in Milan and the third time Italy has played host to the show.  The MTV EMA, which is staged in a different city each year, last visited Milan in 1998 and Rome in 2004.

    “We’re thrilled to bring the 2015 MTV EMA to Milan  an iconic city where art, fashion and music collide, and home to the World Expo,” said Bruce Gillmer, Executive Vice President of Music / Talent Programming and Events for Viacom International Media Networks, and Executive Producer of the MTV EMA. “One of the world’s biggest cultural capitals, Milan will undoubtedly set the stage one of the biggest global music events of the year.”

    “The MTV EMA excites huge interest amongst Italian fans, so it’s fantastic to be able to bring the show back to Milan,” said Raffaele Annecchino, Executive Vice President and Managing Director VIMN South Europe, Middle East & Africa. “The 2004 show in Rome was a huge success. Now, we’re looking forward to delivering an even bigger and better experience with the 2015 MTV EMA in partnership with EXPO, bringing thousands of people from around the world to Milan,” he said.

    COMING after weeks of winning at both the 2014 MTV Africa Music Awards and BET Awards, Nigerian-born sensational singer, Davido, aka Omo Baba Olowo, has been nominated for the MTV European Music Awards 2014(MTV EMA) as the Best African Act.

    Other nominees for the award, which comes up on November 9, at the SSE Hydro, Glasgow, Scotland, include Goldfish (South Africa), Diamond (Tanzania) and Toofan (Togo).

    The fifth and final nomination slot is still up for grabs, with Tiwa Savage (Nigeria), Anselmo Ralph (Angola), Sarkodie (Ghana), Mafikizolo (South Africa), Gangs of Ballet (South Africa), Sauti Sol (Kenya).

    Davido is also up for the “Artiste of the Year” award at the coming Kora Awards 2014, with Omawumi (Nigeria) Diamond (Tanzania) Mafikizolo (South Africa) Sarkodie (Ghana) and 16 other African music artistes making the Top 20 list.

    Nicki Minaj to join Beyonce on VMA’s stage

    WITH the MTV Video Music Awards drawing close, MTV Base has promised that the 2014 stage will be one of the night’s most- talked-about performances.

    This comes with an announcement that Grammy Award-nominated superstar, Nicki Minaj, will be on the same stage with her contemporaries.

    The multiplatinum Hip-hop queen will perform her new hit single, Anaconda, for the first time off her highly anticipated album, The PinkPrint, due for release later this year. Nicki Minaj, therefore, will join previously announced performers, Beyoncé, Usher, Rita Ora, Iggy Azalea, Maroon 5 and 5 Seconds of Summer , at the 2014 VMAs for what promises to be an electrifying live event and TV experience.

    “The VMAs is a pretty big deal. I am very excited and looking forward to the performance,” said Nicki Minaj.

    Minaj is no stranger to the VMA stage, with past performances on the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards pre-show, where she performed her single, Your Love. In 2012, she joined Alicia Keys on the main stage for a fiery performance of Girl on Fire.  Also, Minaj earned a VMA Moonman trophy in 2011 for Best Hip-Hop Video for Super Bass and Best Female Video with Starships in 2012.

    The 2014 MTV Video Music Awards, which comes up at the Forum, Inglewood, California on Sunday, August 24, will premiere on MTV Base on Monday, August 25.

    Nigerian acts join Miguel at MAMA

    MTV Base, organisers of the MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMA), has revealed that R&B superstar Miguel will join the star-studded line-up of performers at the 2014 edition of the awards.

    Miguel will be performing at the global celebration of African creativity, talent and youth culture on June 7, at the ICC in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

    Also, Nigerian sensational singers, Flavour and Tiwa Savage, will be performing at the event, while urban hit makers Uhuru, Oskido and Professor will be flying the flag for South Africa.

    They will, therefore, join previously announced African artistes, including Davido (Nigeria) and Mafikizolo (South Africa) at the music event.

    On his involvement in the MAMA, Miguel said: “What I love most about Africa is the people and the spirit there.  What makes me most proud to be involved in the MAMA is the feeling that my music has reached further than I imagined it could. It is inspiring.”

    This year’s edition of MAMA will feature performances from African and international artistes. Part of the activities on the day will be the awards’ collaborations between artistes of different genres and cultures.

    IT was a weekend of fun for Nigerian celebrities and socialites, as the MTV Africa Music Award 2014 nominees’ party took place at the popular club, D’Place in Lekki, Lagos.

    Put together by MTV Base and supported by Absolut Vodka, a number of guests turned up to support the MAMA 2014 nominees.

    In attendance were some of Nigeria’s trending music acts like Burna Boy, Olamide, Dr Sid, Phyno, KCee, Chidinma and DJ Spinall, among others.

    The party kicked off with a selection of hit music from DJ Spinall, which got guests on their feet. Notable faces at the MAMA nominees party include Senior VP, Viacom Africa, Alex Okosi; DJ Jimmy Jatt; Tiwa Savage and husband; Tee Billz; Dr Sid; Kaffy; Burna Boy; IllBliss; Olu Maintain; Olisa Adibua; BOJ; Toolz and more.

    As the countdown to the MAMAs continues, an all-star lineup of the 2014 nominees and DJs will headline Nigeria’s pan-African club tour tagged The Road to MAMA party. The concert will see MAMA nominees, Davido, Mafikizolo, Ice Prince, KCee, Burna Boy and Chidinma thrilling party lovers at the Lagos edition of The Road to MAMA alongside DJs like DJ Caise, DJ Obi, DJ Humility and DJ Spinall.

    THE MTV Staying Alive Foundation and MTV Base (Africa) have won the prestigious Gold Award in Edutainment at the World Media Festival for Shuga, the sex and relationship drama series filmed in Lagos.

    This is the second time Shuga has won the award, after the success recorded for the series 1 in 2010, where it won gold in the Public Relations Health Award category.

    The World Media Festival Gold Award recognizes true excellence in modern media communication. Judged by industry experts, the 2014 awards saw 700 entries critiqued for writing, sound, editing, creativity and visuals, insights.

    Georgia Arnold, Executive Director, MTV Staying Alive Foundation, shared her excitement about the award: “We are honoured to receive the World Media Festival Gold award for Edutainment, recognising the value of Shuga as a vehicle for communicating messages about public health; as an entertainment experience and as a grassroots teaching tool.”

    Highlighting the valuable role that ‘edutainment’ and multimedia communications can play in the battle to reduce the number of HIV infections among Nigerian youth, Shuga is part of a far-reaching multimedia campaign that fuses sexual health messaging with gripping storylines to raise awareness among young people on HIV prevention and reproductive health in Nigeria.

    Alex Okosi, Senior Vice President/ Managing Director, Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) Africa,  said: “Set in Nigeria, but following universal themes, Shuga showcases the creativity of Nigerian writers, directors and actors. We are delighted that these talented individuals had this mainstream opportunity to demonstrate their talents on TV and other content platforms around the world, using authentic Nigerian voices to paint a new picture of the continent on the global stage, while simultaneously fulfilling important public health goals.”

    The third series of Shuga, which was filmed in Lagos was written by Kemi Adesoye and directed by Biyi Bandele.

    Clarence Peters gets MAMA nominations

    Organisers of the MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMA), MTV Base, have revealed the nominees for the Best Video for this year’s awards show.

    Popular Nigerian music video director, Clarence Peters, is nominated twice for Yung L’s SOS and Burna Boy’s Run My Race.

    The unveil, which was done at the KwaZulu-Natal and supported by Absolut & The City of Durban, sees Peters competing against the likes of Amr Singh for Heaven, Kyle Lewis for Sleepwalker and Khuli Chana and Terence Neale for Ragga Bomb.

    According to the organisers, MAMA 2014 will feature performances from African and international artistes, including the awards’ signature collaborations between artistes of different genres and cultures.

    The winner for Best Video will be chosen by MTV Base. Other Nigerian nominees include Tuface Idibia, Davido, Don Jazzy, Flavour, Burna Boy, Chidinma, Dr Sid, Ice Prince, P Square, Olamide, Phyno, May D, Tiwa Savage, Wizkid and Kcee.

    Recently, Clarence made headline news when South African rapper, Tumi Molekane, accused him of lifting key visual elements off his own Asinamal video, which was released a couple of years ago.

    According to Tumi, the Eminado video directed by Clarence Peters was a remake of his.

    However, this is not the first time the video director has been accused of intellectual property theft. It will be recalled that he also been accused of copying scenes for Ice Prince’s VIP music video released in June 2013 from the US-based rap group, Slaughterhouse’s video.

    A few hours to this year’s edition of the MTV Movie Awards, the organisers have announced global superstars, Eminem and Rihanna, as the top performers.

    The duo will take the stage for the first live performance of their number one smash hit, The Monster, at the awards ceremony, which holds at the Los Angeles’ Nokia Theater live today.

    In 2009, Eminem performed a medley of We Made You/ Crack a Bottle and then created one of the most-talked about moments in the movie awards history with Sasha Baron Cohen. But Rihanna had earlier performed one of her signature hits, Umbrella, with Jay Z in 2007.

    Other moments to look out for at the ceremony include additional performances by 21 one pilots, who will be performing their new single, Car Radio, and Ellie Goulding & Zedd, performing excerpts from the Divergent soundtrack. There will also be presentation of the MTV Generation Award to Mark Wahlberg by his fellow Entourage cast members, Adrian Grenier, Kevin Connolly, Jerry Ferrara and Kevin Dillon- the first public reunion for the cast ahead of their highly anticipated movie release in June 2015.

    This year, the MTV Movie Awards has the distinction of being the only awards show to nominate cinematic legend, Robert De Niro, Kanye West and Joan Rivers in the same category (Best Cameo). Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto take on Ice Cube and Kevin Hart (Best On-Screen Duo) while Jennifer Aniston is pitted against Zac Efron, Chris Hemsworth, Leonardo DiCaprio and Sam Claflin for the coveted Best Shirtless Performance category.

    Again, 12 Years a Slave is up with a nomination in the Movie of The Year category, going against American Hustle, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and The Wolf of Wall Street.

    MTV Base celebrates OLAMIDE

    SUPERSTAR rapper, Olamide has been rated by MTV Base as its channel’s artiste of the month for March.

    Broadcasting on DStv Channel 322, the renowned music platform picked the young artiste based on his meteoric rise as a rap artiste and his smooth blend of Yoruba and English lyrics, for which he continues to grow an impressive fan base.

    Starting from the streets, Olamide came into spotlight in 2010 with the hit single, Eni Duro. Likened to the late Dagrin, Olamide’s acceptance by teeming fans has attracted a number of artistes who have featured him in their songs.

    The artiste, who was recently a co-host on MTV Base’ weekly music chart, Official Naija Top Ten with MTV VJ, Ehiz, will be featured on the channel throughout the month of March. As a mark of endorsement, MTV Base has put the music video of Olamide’s Turn Up on high rotation.

    “I’m so excited that MTV Base has decided to celebrate my work. It’s a big privilege to be honoured by a huge platform like MTV and it can only get better,” Olamide said during his interview on “Spotlight on Olamide”.

    “Olamide is a perfect choice for the much sought-after ‘Artist of the Month’ slot in Nigeria. He’s already topped the MTV Base Original Naija Top 10 twice this year, and he’s enjoying heavy rotation on our channel. Olamide’s story represents the promise that the typical Nigerian artiste and youth hold and MTV Base is proud to be celebrating him this month,” said Head of Marketing and Communications at Viacom Africa, parent company of MTV Base, Colette Otusheso.

    Otusheso revealed that the channel is also focusing on Olamide through a series of themed programmes about the artiste. These he said will be broadcast across Africa, every Thursday in March, on MTV Base, from 7PM.

    The programmes include Olamide: 54 Seconds, Olamide: Top 5 Tips; Spotlight on Olamide; My Mixtape & Videography: Olamide; and The Truth: Olamide.

    FOR Kenyan actress, Lupita Nyong’o, who is the first black African to win the Best Supporting Actress award at the recently held 86th annual Academy Awards, the deluge of congratulatory messages may have just begun.

    A few days ago, music channel, MTV Base (DStv Channel 322) joins other well-wishers, who have a stake in the actress’ career, having offered Lupita her first professional acting role in a HIV and AIDS awareness drama, Shuga.

    Shuga stars Nyong’o in the role of Ayira, a confident and vivacious Nairobi college student, who is forced to come to terms with the consequences of her reckless lifestyle.
