  • Ex-Gov Aliyu, Nasko for re-arraignment on Monday

    Former Niger State Governor, Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu and his Chief Of Staff, Alhaji Umar Nasko will be re-arraigned before a Federal High Court in Minna on Monday.

    The re-arraignment is as a result of their failure to appear before the court and respect hearing notices sent to them.

    The court, presided by Justice Aminu Bappa Aliyu, also issued a bench warrant on the former Governor and his Chief Of Staff.

    Aliyu’s offence was his failure to appear in court while Nasko’s offence is for failure to respect hearing notices served on him.

    Justice Bappa’s predecessor, Justice Yelim Bogoro had granted the duo bail after they met the bail conditions.

    But when Justice Bappa took over the case, he revoked the bail and ordered the accused to appear before it, an order the duo failed to compile with.

    Aliyu is standing trial alongside his then former commissioner of Environment, Nasko, on 8-count charge of criminal conspiracy and money laundering.

    They are accused of laundering ecological funds of over N1.940bn released by the Federal Government to the state in 2014.

    Aliyu Challenges APC to Hold Convention

    Former Governor of Niger state, Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu has stated that the All Progressive Congress (APC) has become too scared to hold its convention.

    Speaking to newsmen after the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Niger East Senatorial District Mega Meeting at Paikoro in Niger state, Aliyu said that despite its challenges, the PDP had been able to hold its convention challenging the APC to do same.

    “After two and a half years after they came into power, APC is becoming scared of their shadow. They have become too afraid to hold an election convention after the first convention they had that brought the executives. Fear is the reason why APC is unable to hold its convention. ”

    He declared that the PDP is ready to take over power in 2019 adding that the people now understands the difference between both parties.

    The former Governor stated that it would be easy for the PDP to take over in Niger state as the people have seen that the PDP government is much better than any other government in the state.

    “2019 will be the year of the PDP. We will not deceive the people, we will ensure that the people are given their right; we will ensure that no Nigerlite goes to bed hungry. We will not receive the people. PDP remains strong in Niger state. ”

    The Niger state PDP Chairman, Barrister Tanko Beji emphasized on the importance of Permanent Voters Card (PVC) calling on any member who have not registered to do so before it is too late.

    “It is with PVC that we can think of outweighing the party in power. PVC is very important. Please go and registered to that we can change the change. ”

    Beji expressed optimism over the victory of the party in 2019 adding that the people can now testify the PDP government remains the best.

    Atiku visits Babangida in Minna

    Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar visited former military President, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida (retd), at his home in Minna, Niger State, on Thursday.

    Atiku arrived the Minna International Airport at 12:10 p.m. and arrived Babangida’s uphill residence 20 minutes later.

    The duo later went into a close-door meeting in one of the ex-President’s rooms in the villa.

    Those at the meeting included former Niger State Governor, Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu, the chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Niger State, Barr. Tanko Beji and other party chieftains in the state.

  • I have no regret as governor, says Aliyu

    Former Niger State Governor Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu has said that he has no regret about his tenure. He said he is not intimidated by the opposition.

    Speaking with reporters in Minna, the state capital, Aliyu said that, if he was given another chance, he would have taken the same decisions and done the same things he did during his tenure.

    He said: “What I should have done better? If given another chance, I would have done things the same way. Governance is about the welfare of the people and not some encentric idea of an individual. Yes, mistakes were made, certain people that should not have been placed in some places were placed there, certain people who were not to have been given certain confidences were given but above all, I do not have any regret.”

    The former governor also said that he is neither intimidated by the opposition nor he felt betrayed that some of his lieutenants who had defected to the opposition. He said the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) will come back stronger in 2019, if it can put its house in order.

    Aliyu added: “I do not feel intimidated by the opposition. If we put our vehicle in good shape, I am very hopeful of the stand of PDP in the 2019 elections. However, we must not allow inordinate ambition to tear it apart ahead of the 2019 polls.”

    The former governor said he has not made up his mind in aspiring for any elective position in 2019. He added: ”I have not made up his mind to aspire for any elective office in 2019. I am still waiting for the call. The senatorial position i vied for was because I was ambushed to do so and  n because I wanted it myself. So for now, I do not know about 2019, so I am still waiting.”

    Ex-Governor Aliyu, aide granted bail

    A Minna High Court on Wednesday granted bail to former Governor of Niger State, Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu and his Chief of Staff, Umar Nasko.

    Aliyu and Nasko were arraigned last week by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on a five -count charge bothering on misappropriation of over N4.5 billion belonging to the Niger State government.

    The duo were remanded at the Minna Medium Security Prisons in Tunga last Monday.

    Justice Aliyu Mayaki granted the former governor bail in the sum of N150 million with two sureties who will deposit the Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) to landed properties worth N200 million each in the registry.

    While Nasko was granted bail in the sum of N100 million with two sureties who must deposit the Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) of landed properties worth N150 million each.

    The Nasko’s counsel, Mamman Mike Usman, said his client’s bail conditions were too harsh.

    He, however, expressed optimism that the conditions would be met before the close of work on Wednesday.

    The sureties to Aliyu included his elder brother, Alhaji Ibrahim Aliyu and one of his former commissioners, Dr. Peter Sariki.

    Ex-governor Aliyu booed in Niger

    Armed military men saved former Niger State Governor, Dr. Babangida Aliyu, from what would have been an embarrassing situation during Friday’s inauguration of the new governor, Alhaji Abubakar Bello.

    The military men released several gun shots and tear gas  and ferried Aliyu out of Bako Kontagora Memorial Stadium venue of the inauguration when the crowd showed their displeasure with his appearance at the swearing in ceremony.

    The ex-governor was booed and stoned by the angry crowd who called him several names.

    Aliyu, whose convoy arrived the inauguration venue at about 10.15am, was booed on arrival by the crowd as he climbed the podium to take the salute of the military guard.

    Shouts of “Barawo,”  “Thief,”  “Ole” “Change has come,”  “Your time is past, go,” filled the air at the stadium.

    Sensing the tension, the organisers of the ceremony had to drop the ex-governor from making speech as earlier planned on the programme.

    The outgoing Secretary to the State government, Seidu Ndako Kpaki, spoke on behalf of the government.

    At about 11am when the new governor was taking his oath of office and oath of allegiance, Aliyu who sat beside his estranged deputy, Hon. Ahmed Musa Ibeto, for the first time in the public since the latter dumped the Peoples Democratic Party, was pelted with slippers and a sachet water, forcing his security details to form human shields round him.

    Governors are toothless bulldogs, says Aliyu

    Niger State Governor Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu has describedgovernors as “toothless bulldogs” for their lack of constitutional power to direct security men to fight the country’s increasing insurgency.

    He spoke yesterday while reacting to the deadly explosions at a Kano mosque at a Jumat prayer last Friday.

    The governor lamented that governors, who ought to be chief security officers, had been rendered powerless by the nature of Nigeria’s federalism.

    His words: “We (governors) need some respect. The federating units are now toothless bulldogs; many commissioners of Police are not taking directive from their governors. Directors of Directorate of Security Service (DSS) will write a different report for their governors and send another report to their director general in Abuja.

    “We need a proper federalism. The Federal Government is stronger than the federating units. And as it is today, the federating units are toothless bulldogs.”

    The governor, who is also the chairman, Northern States Governors Forum (NSGF), said the increasing spate of insecurity in many parts of the North has made it imperative that state police should be allowed.

    Aliyu bars The Nation from Govt House

    The Nation’s Niger State correspondent, Jide Orintunsin, has been barred by Governor Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu from attending state functions in the Government House, Minna.

    The decision to declare Orintunsin persona non-grata in the Government House and from government activities was conveyed to the leadership of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) by the governor’s media aides.

    The Chairman of the Chapel, Wole Mosadomi, announced the ban at an emergency congress.

    According to Mosadomi, Commissioner for Information Danladi Ndayebo, Aliyu’s Chief Press Secretary Israel Ebije and a Senior Special Assistant on Media Relations Dipo Laleye told the chapel executive that the governor has directed that The Nation’s correspondent be barred from entering and covering state functions in the Government House.

    The chairman said Orintunsin was accused of romancing with the All Progressives Congress (APC) and that security and intelligence reports gave him out as the brain behind recent statements by the opposition.

    Mosadomi said the media aides claimed that the governor took the decision before he travelled for lesser hajj, following what he perceived as ‘bad press’, being orchestrated by the opposition.

    This decision was condemned by members at the congress and it directed the leadership of the chapel to demand for a reversion of the directive.

    New C of O in Niger

    Niger State Governor Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu has launched a new Certificate of Occupancy (C of O).

    Commissioner for Information Danladi Ndayebo said yesterday that the C of O will be effective date from August 4.

    Ndayebo said the new land management regime was part of efforts to reposition land administration.

    He said the scheme, which is being executed by the State Geographic Information Systems (NIGIS), would fast track the processes leading to the issuance of Certificates of Occupancy (Cs of O) to land owners.

    It would also make for proper documentation of all land matters and unlock huge revenue potentials of the state.

    Ndayebo then said that owners of current C of O would have till the end of October 2014 within which to present their old Certificates for recertification or regularization adding that failure to do that will lead to forfeiture of such titles.

    He further explained that the new C of O is a two page (one sheet) document which contains information about the applicant, condition for granting the title, the Governor’s signature and the photograph of the applicant embossed on the front page.

    It will also shows the size and coordinates of each plot of land can be found on the back page of the new Certificate of Occupancy

    I‘ve not declared any ambition for 2015, says Aliyu

    Niger State Governor Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu said yesterday that he has not declared any political ambition for next year.

    Aliyu is being rumoured of gunning for either the vice presidential slot or senatorial seat on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

    The governor said this when a delegation from Shiroro and Lapai local government areas paid him a condolence visit over the death of Senator Dahiru Awaisu Kuta who represented Niger East.

    The delegation was shocked when after pledging their support for whatever ambition the governor may have he told them “I have not told anybody that I will contest in 2015”.

    “I have not told anybody what I want. I believe that as God did it for me in 2007 he will still determine what is good for me in 2015.”

    He thanked the people for  their support,  saying “I am not the only politician in the area and I am not the only knowledgeable person I thank you for your belief in me.

    “We thank God that people realise what we are doing in our lifetime and are saying it to make us do more.”

    The governor reminded the people not to mortgage their conscience or sell their votes as doing so will be mortgaging their future.

    “We should not allow people to confuse us we should ask those who come to seek our votes what they will do for us and our communities before agreeing to vote for them, don’t collect money from them if you collect money you have sold your future.”

    Aliyu told the delegation that the government has directed traditional and religious leaders in the state to be wary of fake clerics.

    The Emir of Lapai, Alhaji Umar Bago and Alhaji Bashir Nuhu who spoke on behalf of the delegation praised the developmental strides of the government.
