  • Southeast governors: IPOB unfit to issue travel ban

EBONYI State Governor and Chairman of the Southeast Governors’ Forum (SGF) Dave Umahi has ruled out the possibility of governors in the region apologizing to the proscribed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB).

Umahi’s foreclosure, on Thursday, was the direct response to IPOB’s demand for an open from the governors. He spoke with reporters at the State House in Abuja after meeting with President Muhamadu Buhari.

He said the out-lawed IPOB lacked the power to issue travel ban to the Southeast governors and other top politicians from the zone.

Noting that the governors did not proscribe IPOB because it did not have the power to do so, he said that it was the Federal Government that proscribed the group.

He stressed that the group often made empty threats and that no responsible government would allow a proscribed group to promote lawlessness.

The governor promised to notify the group any time he plans to travel out of Nigeria.

According to him, it was too early for him and his colleagues from the Southeast to start talking of whatever ambitions they may have on who succeeds President Buhari in 2023.

This, he said, would amount to insulting the occupier of the seat, who has spent less than a year in his second term of office.

On his mission to the Villa, Umahi said he came to see the President to thank him for closing the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, for urgent repairs.

He, however, demanded that it should be done with emergency funding intervention rather than relying on budgetary provisions.

Noting that the Sam Mbakwe Airport, Owerri, being the alternative airport, would encounter come security challenges, Umahi said efforts would be made with the Federal Government to secure the adjoining roads to the airport across the region.

Umahi said that governors had not been sleeping over the region’s security challenges, adding that they have been mature and circumspect in their utterances in other not to exacerbate the situation.

Stressing that not all security issues are made public, he recalled the Southeast governors ban on the movement of cattle on foot across the region by herdsmen.

The governor said Buhari was happy with the meeting and that he sought for the President’s support for the reactivation and eventual passage of the Southeast Development Commission bill in the National Assembly.

He also sought presidential audience for another enlarged parley that will have in attendance all Southeast governors, other Igbo leaders and groups across board, including religious and traditional rulers, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, and others.

Umahi said: “The mistake people make is that leaders in this country including governors are not supposed to be talking carelessly, security matters are not discussed on the pages of newspapers.

“But we have to speak out now just to encourage our people let them know that we are doing everything possible to secure their lives. In our states, we have forest guards, vigilance groups, committees from the village level to the community to local government to the state level that interface with any kind of crisis arising from natives to farmers and herdsmen.

“We have been doing everything possible and that is why you see a lot of calm in our states. But when these herdsmen that are terrorists and foreigners found their ways to the south-east, we started having the real insecurity problem and that is why we have to ban them from coming to the Southeast.

“This banning of terrorist herdsmen with AK47 is in agreement with traditional herdsmen, they are also not happy with what is happening – going into kidnapping, raping our women and making the farmlands very much insecure and people are afraid of going to farms now and the resultant effect will be catastrophic because traditionally, we are farmers.

“It’s not as if we have not been doing things, we’ve been doing things but we can’t begin to shout on the pages of newspapers on what we are doing about security.”

On the alleged travel ban IPOB placed governors and political leaders in the Southeast, Umahi said: “Well it is the price of leadership and the price we leaders will have to pay to stabilise the nation.

“Don’t forget that Southeast has over 12 million people living in the North and we do not need to talk to make IPOB happy to suite their demands just because we want to make them happy.

“We need to do things as leaders of this country that we safeguard our the North, safeguard the North people that are in South East and then do everything as leaders to ensure that there is peace and unity among us.

“IPOB said their anger was that we proscribed IPOB, we didn’t have the powers to proscribe IPOB but we have the power to Proscribe the activities of IPOB at the time we did to put the country into one to save the lives of the northern people living in the Southeast and to save the lives of South people living in the north.

“When the lives of our people are safe, we are very happy. So, their threats and condemnation are the price we need to pay as leaders. The important thing is that we are here to represent our people and our conscience bear us witness that we are doing is what will bring peace to our nation and not what will integrate it.

“Don’t forget that we are governors of Southeast and if we begin to talk like the youths, people will be very happy with us, especially our people, but the issue is will it guarantee peace of the nation, will it guarantee the safety of our people?”

On the open letter by IPOB to him and other governors in which the group made some demands for truce, he said: “You see, we are servants of the people, we have no apology to tender because we represent them.

“There is misinformation because they said we should tender apology for proscribing IPOB we did not proscribed IPOB because we did not have the powers. But it was within our powers to say you have to stop the activities because you are trying to endanger the visitors to south east and endanger our people in the north.

“We had to do that and we don’t have apologies to offer for doing that and we also refuse to discuss the merits and demerits of our actions on the pages of newspapers. As leaders like I said you have to be economical with the way you speak so that you will continue to preserve the unity of this country.”

On how the President responded, the governor said:  “The President is well disposed to the request we made to him and I am sure he is going to meet our demands. Don’t forget that the last time we came we made a demand for accelerated process of awarding the Second Niger Bridge and that Mr. President granted.

“I think the second Niger Bridge is the fastest in terms of progress amongst Mr. President’s projects.”

  • Buhari’s government most corrupt since 1999 – Atiku

Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar has described the present federal government of President Muhamadu Buhari as the most corrupt since the return of democracy in 1999.

Atiku spoke in Abakaliki on Tuesday while addressing supporters of the People’s Democratic Party,PDP, at the Ebonyi State Secretariat of the Party. He was in the state to campaign for Presidency under the party.

He said the only achievement the All Progressive Congress, APC, led government can boost of is fighting corruption but argued that fighting corruption is not the only responsibility of government.

“What is happening today in our country is in contravention with all our provisions of our constitution. In our federation, we are supposed to have an inclusive government but you know that this federal government is not inclusive.

You know that this federal government is not united; you know that this federal government is incompetent; you know that this federal government is more corrupt than any government we have come through since 1999”.

”So, let nobody come and deceive you on corruption, they are more corrupt than any government that I know since 1999 and we shall be revealing their level of corruption. Fighting corruption alone is not the only responsibility of government”.

“Our unemployment is accelerated high and there have never a time we had more than 11 million people, young people, young women thrown out of job. Today, we have more than 11 million unemployed people. Today, we have witnessed much insecurity in this country. Today, we are witnessing high inflation the APC government has brought to us in this country”, he said.

Atiku told the mammoth crowd that he was in the state to seek their support to throw out Muhammadu Buhari from Aso Rock.

He said the coalition formed by PDP and about 40 other parties is the first step in voting out the president in next year’s general election.

“On Tuesday, 40 political parties came together to meet themselves to present one candidate for presidential election. The coalition is going to have one candidate for presidential election, one candidate for governor, one candidate for senator, one candidate for House of Reps, one candidate for House of Assembly, one candidate for party chairman.

”We need this alliance because what I have seen in the last three years is what I have not seen in the last 35 years in this country. Therefore, we are determined, we are united and we are ready to make sure that in the next election whether state or national or federal, we will kick out APC in every state in this country”.

“We have never experienced the level of poverty we are facing today. They are selling crude oil around $70 dollars per barrel, when we came in 1999 it was around $10dollars per barrel. I want to assure you that your party is ready to take that power but we can only do so through your support and your unity of purpose. You are our bosses, if you tell us to go right we will go, if you tell us to go left we will go but at the end of the day you must accept responsibility if you take us to the wrong direction”, Atiku said.

While receiving Atiku, Ebonyi state Governor, David Umahi said south east will negotiate 2019 presidency and that the zone will vote for a presidential candidate who will develop the zone.

“The people of Ebonyi state, the people of south east will sit down with anybody that is asking our votes to rule this country to negotiate. South east will not follow wrong path again. Anybody that wants the votes of south east will sit on the table with the leaders of south east, we shall agree, we shall write it, we shall sign it, we shall seal it.

“At a time I am the chairman of south east governor’s forum, we shall come together and all the areas of marginalization that we have been talking about, it is a time to discuss with our PVCs. The people of south east will be decided by the leaders of south east and any leader that is in agreement with our terms, we will follow the person”,he said.

Umahi noted that Atiku has all it takes to be President of the country.

  • Don’t waste your votes, elect Fayemi, Buhari tells Ekiti electorate

President Muhamadu Buhari on Tuesday asked the electorate in Ekiti  not to waste their votes  in Saturday’s governorship election.

Rather,  the president urged voters to elect the candidate of the All Progressives Party (APC),  Dr  Kayode Fayemi, given the track record of the ruling APC  administration in the country.

Buhari, who gave the charge in Ado-Ekiti  at the grand finale of the mega rally of the party, told the crowd of party faithful and supporters at the Oluyemi Kayode Stadium that there was no better alternative to Fayemi.

He said the people of Ekiti must not be deceived  by the “stomach infrastructure’’ programme  of the PDP government in the state, describing it as at variance with the norms in a functional democracy.

Buhari said he was in  Ekiti not only to campaign for Fayemi but also to create  awareness as well as sensitise the people on the dividends of democracy so far made available to them.

The president said his administration had so far executed 13 projects  in the state, with no fewer than 29 contractors handling them.

He said the initiatives, most of which were  road construction projects,  had also provided direct and indirect jobs to  many residents.

Besides, he said approval had been given by his administration for the construction of a Federal Secretariat in Ado Ekiti to ease the burden of  office accommodation faced by federal workers in the state.

He also listed the engagement of many indigenes of the state in  the N-Power programme of the Federal Government, granting of  bailout funds to  the state as well as approval of School-Feeding Programme and Conditional Cash Transfer scheme as some of the achievements of  his administration.

The president assured  the people of the state of more dividends of democracy if they support Fayemi in the election.

Also addressing the crowd, the National Chairman of the party, Mr Adams Oshiomhole, said Fayemi  would redress all the wrongs of the Ayo Fayose administration.

He also gave an assurance that all the salaries and emoluments owed workers by the Fayose administration would be paid.

Speaking in the same vein, the National Leader of the party, Sen. Bola Ahmed Tinubu,  assured residents  that the APC was committed to the progress and development of the country.

He accused the PDP of destroying the country’s economy, urging the people to embrace the change agenda of the APC.

” It was the PDP that destroyed the future of Nigeria and those yet unborn. PDP stole all the monies and made life difficult for all the citizens

” It is not easy to rebuild what the PDP has spent long years destroying; for  many of them that are now complaining,  where were they when our economy was being bastardised?

” You must not allow anybody to  intimidate you, I urge you to guard  your PVC and use it wisely on Saturday

” It is your turn in Ekiti to get a good government, it is not for you alone but for your children and their future,’’  Tinubu said.

At the rally were 12 APC governors, seven serving ministers and national leaders of the party.

The high point  of the event was the formal defection to   the APC  by  many PDP members including a  serving Senator,  Fatimah Raji-Rasaki, and a member of  the House of  Representatives, Oni Olamide.

Adesola Olusade, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Youth and Sports, says the Super Eagles may need the “magical touch’’ of President Muhamadu Buhari to excel at the upcoming FIFA World Cup.

  • Buhari to present 2017 budget December 14

Buhari to present 2017 budget December 14

President Muhammadu Buhari, on Tuesday asked the Senate to grant him Wednesday, December 14th, 2016 to present the 2017 Appropriation Bill to the joint session of the National Assembly.
The request is contained in a letter read by the Senate President, Abubakar Bukola Saraki, on Tuesday entitled “2017 budget proposal and plans to lead Nigeria out of recession.”  The presentation of the budget is coming without the approval of the Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) and Fiscal Strategy Paper (FSP) by the Senate.
Although the MTEF has been considered and referred to the joint Senate committee of Appropriation, Finance and National Planning, the fiscal document which detailed the parameters for the 2017 to 2019 fiscal measure, is yet to be approved.
The presidential letter read in part, “I crave the kind indulgence of the National Assembly to grant me the slot of 1000 hours on Wednesday, the 14th of December, 2016 to formally address a joint session of the National Assembly on the 2017 budget proposal and our plans to get the country out of recession.

“Please extend Mr. Senate President, the assurances of my highest regards to the distinguished senators, as I look forward to addressing the joint session.”
  • Buhari not to blame for Nigeria’s woes, says Yari

Buhari not to blame for Nigeria’s woes, says Yari

Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) and Zamfara State Governor, Abdulaziz Yari at the weekend declared that President Muhammadu Buhari cannot be blamed for the present woes the country has found itself.

According to him, what Nigeria is going through is partly a reflection of the global economy, which adversely affected the international prices of oil.

Despite the drop in prices of oil, he said that President Buhari has done well in managing the Nigeria economy in past five months.

The governor, who spoke with journalists in Abuja, said that only Nigerians who were aggrieved because of ministerial nomination and other appointments could be unhappy with Buhari.

He said: “They all should understand how Buhari emerged as president and the situation he met on ground on the issue of economy which is the global issue. Despite the fact that the global leaders are trying, to mention economic recession, but there is bad signal and they are managing it at the top level but in the actual sense, this recess we are in now is more than that of 2008 because China is experiencing very slow production, Brazil, Argentina.

“The only country that is doing well is America and India, so, there is significant drop in GDP globally except America and India. So, it is not about Buhari,” he added.

“If we were selling at 102/110 and we were having 38 as production cost and over 70 were put in the basket for sharing, but today, we are selling at 46 and the Joint Venture partners are still taking 38 as their cost of production thereby leaving us with less than $20. So, how are we going to survive?

“But we are still moving and thinking of how we are going to show that Nigeria has piloted change. So, the people of northern Nigeria or the entire Nigeria should look at this scenario because those in the global business know what the situation is and there is no magic. So, therefore I believe the President is doing well and he started very well.

According to him, the Nigeria’s economy will experience a significant improvement as all the leakages are being blocked through the introduction of the Treasury Single Account.

Stressing that Buhari came on board with many agenda, he said Nigerians need to give him time and the chance to do the work.

“Definitely, he will deliver the campaign promises and at the same time, the issue of security, energy, productivity and discipline in the service, what he has achieved within the five months is remarkable,” Yari stated.

Continuing, he said: “I have no idea that they are not happy because if anyone can say that, it should not be the north alone, it should be all Nigerians.

“And I am surprised anyone will say he or she is not happy but maybe they are not happy because he did not consult them in the selection of who his ministers will be. But in general terms, he has done well.” the governor said.

He also maintained that the NGF, which was crisis-ridden before his tenure, is now faring well under his leadership.

He said: “Glory be to the Almighty who gave me the opportunity to be a chairman by the support of my colleagues and now, we are having one forum and it is a rallying point to all governors and a rallying point to the federal government in the issue of leadership of the governors and the federal government today.”

  • 2015: Jonathan, Buhari not worth dying for -Sheik Gumi

2015: Jonathan, Buhari not worth dying for -Sheik Gumi

Revered Kaduna Islamic scholar, Sheik Ahmad Mahmud Gumi has called on Nigerians to avoid any form of violence in the forth coming general elections particularly the presidential election.
He said both President Goodluck Jonathan of the PDP and former Head of State, General Muhammadu Buhari of the APC are not worth dying for.

‎He also called on well meaning Nigerians and electorates not to allow politics to suppress their conscience.

Shiehk Gumi made the call in a press statement he personally signed circulated to the press in Kaduna was ‎ in reaction to reports where he claimed not to have been quoted correctly.
“For the records, I am not a politician and I don’t have sympathy for any of the political parties. My commitment for those that are fair and following what I do is always to ensure that the rule of law prevails in the conduct of all politicians and for the major stakeholders to avoid overheating our already saturated polity.

“If some of my comments, which some considered nasty and against their political interest and pursuit, will ultimately alert our largely unenlightened youths and subsequently prevent the looming bloodshed I foresaw, then the abuses and allegations of compromise against my person will be my own sacrifice to this nation.

“It does not matter the malicious opinion of anybody against whosoever did anything for the sake of Allah because He knows the secrets of our hearts and He is the ultimate judge. I am always very conscious of everything I write and I will always accept responsibility no matter who feels offended.

“As an Islamic scholar the supporters of Jonathan or Buhari should not expect me to embark on campaign or to compel people to vote a candidate they don’t want. My responsibility is to guide and alert the nation based on what I know and my conviction, while the people have the final say. In the process, like all mortals, I can be wrong. What is important in Islam is to act strictly for the sake of Allah.” He said.

Reacting to the report where he claimed to have been misquoted, Gumi said, “I have not said, as reported during the groups visit to me, that General Buhari is also corrupt as purported and erroneously disseminated. In any case, it is not my duty to determine whether anybody is corrupt or not or to even pass a damning verdict on him.

“May I state, however, that the content of my recent posting as clear as it is was publicized by some media outfits to deliberately mislead the public about my position, many viewed it as against Buhari or an indirect endorsement for Jonathan.

“The records too are very clear. There is no Nigerian leader I persistently criticize and censor like Jonathan because of the deficiency in his leadership to address many serious national issues today, in some part of the country .

“Criticizing Buhari will inevitably be seen as an act of blasphemy in the eyes of his supporters. They see anyone that speaks against what they believe in as a Jonathan man. This pathetic situation has to be reversed because the moment someone presents himself for leadership he is liable to criticism and answerable to people before God.

“The fact that there is religion in politics and politics in religion is the reason why I believe it is a duty for me to be consistent in addressing issues of public interest and to ensure that no human blood drops for the sake of anybody’s ambition, including the ambition of Jonathan and Buhari.

“My comments on avoiding violence during the election is not only limited to the supporters of Buhari as mischievously being insinuated but extended to the supporters of Jonathan as well.

“In fact that is why before the two parties held their presidential conventions I repeatedly urged the parties to do away with the candidatures of Jonathan and Buhari because of the potential danger of doing so. But now that they didn’t listen and produced the duo, it is obvious that only one of them will eventually become president in 2015.

“At this point I must say, therefore, that we must prepare our minds and accept the outcome of the election as much as it is conducted under reasonable fairness. This is better than the risk of losing one human life because of the ambition of Jonathan or Buhari. If lives are worth sacrificing why is it that the children of our politicians did not participate in the post- election violence of 2011! At this note I will call on INEC and the Security agencies to conduct themselves appropriately without partiality to diffuse post -election tension and Violence.

“I also call on the public to be patient no matter the level of provocation and injustice because at the end of it all and due to our collective prayers Allah (SWT) will provide the way out for Nigeria.

“I am compelled to give this additional comment because I know that there are many reasonable people that misunderstood my position because of the manner my comments are being reported. May Allah protect us all and guide us aright. Amin” he prayed.

  • On the defection of Shekarau to PDP

On the defection of Shekarau to PDP

SIR: The defection of a former Kano State Governor, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau from the All Progressives Congress, APC, to the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, though very unfortunate, is nothing to worry about. Shekarau, just like President Jonathan, is a lucky politician whose relevance is overstated. While Jonathan rode to power through luck and former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Shekarau rode to political stardom through the back of Muhamadu Buhari.

In 2003, the people of Kano, just like during the 2011 presidential election, overwhelmingly voted for Buhari. During the electioneering campaign, Buhari categorically told his lieutenants in Kano to vote for Shekarau, a relatively unknown politician in the ancient city as governor. Fortunately for Shekarau, Presidential and Governorship elections took place the same day.

Buhari, as one may recall, won Kano for his All Nigerian People’s Party, ANPP. He also delivered the Government House, Kano to ANPP, sending Engineer Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso out of office.

As preparation for the 2007 elections gathered momentum, Kwakwaso signified his intention to return to power. Skekarau, knowing the gargantum structure of Kwankwaso, spawned an intricate web of high wire intrigues against him by hurriedly setting up a Judicial Commission of Enquiry to probe his administration. The commission, within a month, came out with a controversial report banning Kwankwaso from holding public office for 10 years.  The report, without being thoroughly debated upon by the members of the state House of Assembly, was gazetted.

Dissatisfied with the report, Kwankwaso dragged the state government, commission members and Kano Assembly members to court. Kwakwaso was then in Abuja, serving as Minister of Defence. His purported indictment made the re-election of Shekerau as Governor in 2007 a walkover. With Buhari as presidential flag bearer of the defunct ANPP, Shekarau was re-elected with a wide margin.

In 2011, having had his integrity cleared by a court of competent jurisdiction, Kwankwaso declared his intention to return to Kano Government House. By this time, Shekarau, because of his presidential ambition, had used the instruments of state to hijack the ANPP structure from Buhari. The angry Buhari left ANPP with his teeming supporters for Shekarau to form the defunct Congress of Progressives Change, CPC.

In 2011, Buhari, just like Shekarau, contested for the Presidency, scoring about two million votes in the ancient city of Kano. Shekarau, as the then incumbent governor of Kano, scored less than 500, 000 votes for his ANPP. Kwankwaso, then as the PDP governorship candidate, mobilised more votes for President Jonathan, the presidential candidate of the PDP in Kano than Shekarau did for himself and his party. When the presidential results were released, Buhari of the CPC came first; Jonathan of the PDP came second while Shekarau, the incumbent governor, came third. Shekarau also failed to retain Kano governorship seat for his party, the ANPP.  The ANPP of Shekarau also lost 75% of the National and State Assembly seats in Kano to the PDP.

Now that Shekarau has left the APC he helped nurtured to the PDP, all one canwish him is good luck.

Interestingly, Shekarau did not say that he left APC because Kwankwaso is not performing; rather his wish is to be placed above Kwankwaso, the man he succeeded as governor and the incumbent governor in the party. That is impossible. The general public might wish to note that Shekarau defected to PDP without most of his defunct ANPP members. Alhaji Gwarzo, the only Senator elected on the platform of the ANPP in 2011 has pledged his loyalty to Kwankwaso.  The few ANPP House of Representatives members in Kano have endorsed Kwankwaso as their leader.

APC ready to take power in 2015, say Buhari, Tinubu

National leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Gen. Muhamadu Buhari and Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu yesterday said the party is ready to take power in 2015.

They urged the leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to plan ahead of the 2015 general elections.

The APC leaders spoke yesterday in Benin, the Edo State capital, at Governor Adams Oshiomhole’s fifth year anniversary in office and launch of the party in the state.

“We are, therefore, reminding INEC that it has the responsibility to direct the people and correctly advise the people that it will guarantee a free, fair and credible election.

“We know that power is not easy to surrender. But we want it and we will get it in an honest manner because APC has come to stay,” Tinubu said.

He hailed the residents for their foresight in voting for Oshiomhole.

Tinubu said: “Your votes have not been misplaced by the amount of massive development being experienced in the state.

“Since you took that decision five years ago, Oshiomhole has never looked back in terms of infrastructure and economic development of Edo State.

“You have seen and witnessed the radical development. But let me say that this is not our final destination.

“Our destination is to take over the federal level to replicate what Oshiomhole and other APC governors are doing in their states.

“You have accepted APC and it is now your duty to begin to spread the good news around your neighbourhoods and communities.”

Gen. Buhari, who congratulated Oshiomhole on his achievements, said: “I am happy that the people can now see the difference.”

The former head of state said he was optimistic that the governor would continue to develop the state.

He stressed that an APC government at the centre would eradicate poverty and provide security in the nation.

“If you vote us into power, we are prepared to tackle abduction and killing of people across the nation so that people can move freely in whatever part of this country.

“APC is here to take power in 2015, to effectively manage the economic fortunes of our land,” Buhari said.
