    VC calls for improved girl-child enrollment in public schools

    The Vice Chancellor ( VC ), Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, Niger, Prof. Muhammad Maiturare, on Thursday called for improved girl-child enrollment in public schools in the state.

    Maiturare made the call during the presentation of exercise books and chalks in Dubwa village in Paikoro Local Government Area of the state.

    He said that school attendance by pupils and students should be further strengthened and enhanced to ensure quality learning and better external examination results.

    The vice chancellor expressed satisfaction with the level of enrollment of  indigenes of Paiko in various programmes in the university.

    “We have a sizeable number of students and teachers population in the university,’’ Maiturare said.

    The vice chancellor ( VC ) advised parents to support the various schools’ management committees inaugurated, to ensure the smooth delivery of education in public schools, through materials and financial contributions.

    The President, Paigokni Development Association, Amb. Zubairu Dada, said the association would intensify efforts on educational programmes through the institution of award for best teachers and pupils in public schools.

    He commended the state government’s efforts in education and called for more assistance in teachers recruitment and repair of facilities in public schools in the area.

    Dada said that the two classrooms at U.K. Primary School Paikoro, would be renovated in line with the educational pursuit of the people.

    IBBU, RMRDC complete mapping of raw materials in three states 

    The Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University ( IBBU ), Lapai, has completed mapping and characterization of industrial mineral deposits in Nasarawa, Kwara and Niger states.

    This is contained in a press statement signed by the Vice Chancellor of IBBU, Prof. Muhammad Maiturare, made available on Thursday in Minna.

    Maiturare said the university was commissioned to undertaken the project by the Raw Materials Research and Development Council ( RMRDC ).

    He said that the full report of the project had been submitted to the Director General of RMRDC, Dr Hussaini Ibrahim.

    The vice chancellor commended the council for supporting the project through a research grant to the university, stressing that the gesture was in line with current focus on developing solid minerals to diversify the economy.

    He said, the study mapped and geochemically characterized five strategic industrial minerals, namely, Clay, Marble, Barite, Talc and Feldspar.

    ” The results showed that cosmetic, jewellery, cement, battery, paint, ceramics, pharmaceutical and building materials industries could be developed and sustained in these areas using the mapped industrial minerals.”

    Maiturare noted that sustained mining of solid minerals would generate employment, reduce poverty, create wealth and empower women and youth in the country.

    The Director General of RMRDC, Dr Hussaini Ibrahim, said when he received the report that the council would be commissioned to undertake similar study in the remaining states of North Central zone.

    IBB University gets $30m TETFund grant for research

    The Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University ( IBB ), Lapai in Niger on Wednesday said it received 30 million dollars grant from Tertiary Education Trust Fund ( TETFund ) for critical research projects.

    The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Muhammad Maiturare, made this known in Lapai when executive members of Correspondent Chapel of Nigeria Union of Journalists ( NUJ ), Niger council, paid him a courtesy visit.

    Maiturare said that the grant was the Institutional Based Research component of TETFund, which would be utilised to explore potential benefits for socio-economic development of the state and the country at large.

    “The research projects which cut across fields of sciences, technology, education and humanities will go a long way in fast tracking the development drive of Niger State and Nigeria in general,’’ he said.

    He commended the chapel leadership for the visit and assured members of the institution’s management’s readiness to sustain collaboration with its members.

    The vice chancellor advised the journalists to always be objective in their reportage, describing them as critical stakeholders that would contribute to the development of the institution.

    Earlier, Mr Aideloje Ojo, Chairman of the Correspondent Chapel, Minna, lauded the initiative of the university in the development of the education sector, especially on research that would contribute to the development of humanity.

    Ojo assured that the correspondent chapel would support the university by promoting its activities.

    Bello appeals to lecturers to resume work, promises to address all issues

    Gov. Abubakar Bello of Niger has appealed to lecturers in state-owned tertiary institutions to call off their ongoing industrial action.

    Bello made the appeal in Minna during a meeting with the state Commissioner for Education, Hajiya Fatima Madugu, and Prof. Muhammad Maiturare, Chairman, Governing Board, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University.

    The governor gave an assurance that pending issues concerning the demands of the lecturers would be addressed immediately.

    He said that the Head of Service and the affected ministries would meet with the state chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress to address pending issues.

    He noted that the industrial action by the academic staff of state-owned institutions was not healthy for the state and future generation.

    Similarly, Madugu also appealed to the affected workers to return to work because the state government was committed to meeting their demands.

    “The governor is very passionate about education and committed to meeting the demands of the striking workers.

    “We have a responsible and a responsive governor; I am appealing to our striking workers to call off their action and return to work.”

    Maiturare also urged the state government to resolve all pending issues for immediate resumption of academic activities in the state.
