  • Bindow warns youths against abusive words on leaders

    Governor Muhammadu Bindow of Adamawa has warned youths in the country to shun the use of abusive words on elders and leaders in the society.

    Bindow gave the warning at the 20th year anniversary of Islamic Development Center (IDC) on Saturday in Yola.

    He also advised them to desist from making unpleasant comments on their leaders especially on the social media platforms.

    “We should be very careful and cautious about  the way and manner our youths are abusing leaders on social media platforms.

    “The social media platforms should be regarded as means of enlightenment, development, education and peaceful coexistence in the society.

    “But it is unfortunate that today in Nigeria almost 90 per cent of those on social media platforms are using it negatively either to blackmail or cause unrest,’’ Bindow said.

    He also advised the Federal Government to sanitize the system and called on those involved in negative acts to desist from such.

    In his address, Umar Muhammad, the Ameer of the Center, said the center was established 20 years ago.

    Muhammad said that the center had within the last years fostered peace, progress and unity among Muslims and their neighbours.

    “The center has since its establishment in 1998 served as the channel of communication and understanding between Muslims and non –Muslims,’’ he said.

  • Bindow condemns report linking him with Atiku’s rally

    Gov. Muhammadu Bindow of Adamawa has described as “malicious and false” an online report alleging that he gave N70 million to organisers of Saturday’s rally in Yola by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, a presidential aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party.

    Bindow in a statement Sunday by his Special Adviser Press and Media Affairs, Mr Martins Dickson, said the report trying to portray him as engaging in anti party activities was cheap blackmail by those worried over his rising profile and that of APC in the state.

    “The publication is false, malicious, misleading and an attempt to mask the rising profile, good virtues and sacrifice of Sen. Bindow in upholding and promoting APC as the most popular party in Adamawa.

    “The authors of the fabricated lies have run out of substance with which to discredit him and have resorted to cheap blackmail and childish stories.”

    The statement urged journalists and the media to always strive to verify their facts and be professional in their operation.

    “The good work of APC under Bindow is spread glaringly across the 21 local government areas of the state for all to see and there’s no amount of falsehood that will make anyone believe that a governor and party that have done so well in the state will be involved in any form of clandestine anti-party activity”.

    The statement reiterated the governor’s commitment to remain focused on fulfilling his campaign promises in line with his party’s manifesto.

    Adamawa targets 6,000 youths for skills training in 2018

    Gov. Muhammadu Bindow of Adamawa on Tuesday said the government would offer skills training to about 6,000 youths across the state in 2018.

    Bindow told the youths at a New Year rally in Yola that the gesture was part of his campaign promise to eradicate poverty among the teeming jobless youths in the state.

    The governor said: “In 2018, our administration is targeting additional 6,000 youths for various skills acquisition training that includes irrigation, carpentry and poultry among others.

    “The development is designed to reduce the poverty level of jobless youths and to improve their living condition through direct small-scale entrepreneurship.’’

    He stressed that the effort would also help to enhance peace and stability in the state.

    According to him, the state government is undertaking several developmental projects across the state to enhance the livelihood and economic wellbeing of the people

    Bindow listed some of the projects to include roads construction in major towns in the state, the upgrading of six general hospitals, construction of primary and secondary schools among others.

    He added: “The government is making efforts to continue with its vibrant economic programmes through sustainable agricultural development projects started in 2017.’’

    The governor explained that under the agricultural development project, the government in partnership with local councils had distributed 150 tractors and other implements to boost agricultural mechanisation.

    Adamawa APC endorse Buhari, Bindow for second term

    Stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Adamawa on Saturday passed vote of confidence on President Muhammadu Buhari and Gov. Muhammadu Bindow, urging them to go for second term in 2019.

    The stakeholders made the call at a meeting attended by party elders, members of National Assembly, State Assembly, elected council chairmen and party executives from all levels in the state.

    According to them, the progress recorded in the fight against insurgency, corruption and infrastructural development at the state and national levels were laudable.

    Addressing the meeting on behalf of the state government, Alhaji Abdulrahman Abba-Jimeta said Adamawa Government is interested in seeing that Buhari contested for second time in office to fully deliver on his transformation programmes.

    “As far as Adamawa is concern, Buhari and Osinbajo are our candidates for 2019.

    “The standard practice worldwide is for a performing president to serve his two-term in office.”

    Abba-Jimeta, who noted the representation of people from Adamawa in Buhari government, urged Buhari to look into the panel report on suspended Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr David Babacir and reinstate him if he is not found wanting.

    Abba-Jimeta lamented what he described as desperate moves by some APC members in the state to create problem between the state government and the Federal Government just to score cheap point.

    He said the state APC government has been working in line with the party manifesto and has so far delivered in areas of infrastructure, healthcare, education and agriculture.

    Sen. Binta Masi, Rep. Abdulrahman Shuaibu and Adamawa Assembly Deputy Speaker, Mr Emmanuel Tsamdu, who spoke on behalf of Senators, House of Representatives members and Adamawa Assembly members, said they were okay with the resolutions at the stakeholders meeting and would work towards its actualization.

    FG urges states to reform food programme

    The Federal government ( FG ) through the Minister of Health, Mr Isaac Adewole has urged State Governments across the country to accept and reform the ongoing Food Safety Programme for the good health of Nigerians.

    Adewole made the call while declaring open a one day awareness creation on National Policy on Food Safety and its implementation Strategy ( NPFSIS ) in Yola, the Adamawa state capital on Friday.

    According to him, food is a very vital necessity of life, which deserved safety components for sustainable health and economic growth.

    “The Federal Ministry of Health formulated and adopted the National Policy on Food Safety and its Implementation Strategy ( NPFSIS ) in March, 2016.

    “The policy is to streamline the activities along the food chain for effective and efficient oriented food safety Programme.

    “Therefore, I urge and encourage all State Governments across the country to accept and reform the food safety by setting up their states food safety management committee (SFSMC),’’ Adewole said.

    Adewole, who was represented by Mr Fubara Chukwu, a Director in the ministry, regretted the lapses in food safety as reported by the World Health Organisation ( WHO ) leading to daily occurrence of food borne illness.

    The Minister said that the current report from the WHO estimated that food borne disease caused illness at the ratio of one to ten persons, especially in children less than five years.

    He noted that preventable food borne disease outbreaks such as Cholera, Lassa fever, Diarrhoea, lead and Methanol poisoning had plagued many states with different impact level in recent years.

    “These diseases are generally the consequence of poor food safety culture and poor hygiene practices in the country,’’ he said.

    In his remark, Gov. Muhammadu Bindow of Adamawa, said that the State Government has directed the state sister agency to reform the food safety department.

    Bindow, who was also represented by Alhaji Ahmed Sajo, Commissioner for Information and Strategy, said that the State Government would collaborate with the Federal Government ( FG ) to control the menace of poor food safety.

    Adamawa civil servants are free of corruption

    Gov. Muhammadu Bindow of Adamawa has commended civil servants in the state for eschewing corruption and providing exemplary leadership worthy of emulation.

    The governor gave the commendation in Yola on Tuesday while declaring open one-day sensitisation workshop on work ethics for the state civil servants.

    He said, ‘’Since I assumed office, there has not been a case of civil servant brought before me in connection with corruption related cases.”

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Bindow was elected the governor of the state two years ago.

    “Adamawa civil servants are free of corruption, I can testify to that and in fact, they are among the best to deal with in the country in terms of transparency.’’

    He said that the state government, through Paris club loan refund, had spent billions of naira on the settlement of salary and pension arrears of workers.

    The governor urged the civil servants to pray for him to enable him deliver more dividend of democracy to the people.

    Earlier, Dr Louis Mandama, the state Head of Civil Service said the workshop was organised to improve work ethics of the civil servants in the state.

    The participants include permanent secretaries, directors and heads of departments.

    Adamawa: 105,000 patients benefit from ICRC project

    The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) says 105,000 patients have benefitted from its Algorithm for Management of Childhood (ALMANACH) illness project in Adamawa.

    The Head of Office of the ICRC in Adamawa, Mr Jean Ndizhue, made this known on Wednesday in Mubi while briefing Gov. Muhammadu Bindow who was at Mubi General Hospital.

    Ndizhue said the project, which was the first in Africa, is enhancing diagnosis of children illness.

    “In partnership with Adamawa Health Care Agency, the ICRC runs a project (ALMANACH) which aims to enhance the diagnosis of children (2 months to 3 years of age) illness.

    “The diagnosis is assisted with tablets that help the health professionals to easily and quickly identify the illness and treat them.

    “Currently, this project is implemented in 12 health facilities with possibility of incorporating more.

    “The ICRC provides regular support to the project with drugs, staff salary, and technical help. More than 105,000 patients have benefitted from the services. This project is the first in Africa,” Ndizhwe said.

    According to him, the ICRC health programme in Adamawa is concentrating mainly in supporting Primary Health Care Services to provide better service to the people affected by conflicts and violence, including IDPs, returnees and hosts communities.

    Ndizhwe also said that the ICRC in partnership with Mubi General Hospital runs a coordinating unit that receives patients that were referred from primary health care services.

    He said that the ICRC settles expenses of referred patients, drugs and salary of two staff of the coordination unit.

    He said the ICRC also drilled a borehole for the hospital as well as provided two water tanks.

    “Full renovation of waiting room has been completed with consulting rooms and toilets. Besides, the waiting room has been fully furnished with 174 chairs and seats for patients,’’ he said.

    Also briefing the governor, the Adamawa Field Coordinator of International Rescue Committee (IRC), Mr Armand Serge, said the committee is supporting the hospital in psycho-social consoling of patients and nutrition, among others.

    Bindow, who also received donation of some hospital equipment presented by MTN Foundation for Mubi and Ganye General Hospitals during the visit, lauded the various organisations for their support to the state, particularly areas affected by insurgency.

    Bindow said his administration has declared a state of emergency on health and was ever ready to partner with such stakeholders in transforming the health sector.

    CVR: Adamawa to declare public holiday

    Dissatisfied with the voter turn-out, Gov. Muhammadu Bindow of Adamawa says he would declare public holiday to enable eligible citizens of the state participate in the ongoing Continuous Voters Registration (CVR).

    Bindow said this while receiving some Adamawa traditional rulers who paid him Sallah homage on Monday in Yola.

    The governor said that the level of people’s participation in the exercise across the state was discouraging and appeal to all eligible citizens to come out and be registered.

    “The decision is to give chance especially to people from Northern and other parts of the state who lost their voter registration cards either during Boko Haram crisis, flood and other disasters to re-register.

    “The State Government is going to declare a two-day public holiday to enable all eligible citizens of the state to participate in the ongoing CVR.

    “The State Executive Council in the next meeting will fix the appropriate date for the holiday,’’ Bindow said.

    He therefore called on eligible people of the state to come out and register to enable them exercise their rights during elections.

    Earlier in their separate remarks, the Lamido of Adamawa, Alhaji Muhammadu Barkindo, and the Emir of Mubi, Alhaji Isa Ahmadu, commended the governor for infrastructural development in the state despite financial constrains.

    The traditional rulers pledged their support and cooperation to the government for peace and development to reign supreme in the state.

  • Insurgency: VSF to assist 12,000 pupils, 31 schools in Adamawa

    The Victims Support Fund (VSF) says it will assist 12,000 pupils and 31 schools under its education empowerment programme  in three local government areas affected by insurgency in Adamawa.

    The Executive Director of the fund, Prof. Sunday Ochoche, made this known on Friday while flagging-off the second phase of distribution of school bags, learning and teaching materials to pupils and officials of affected schools in Garkida town of Gombi Local Government Area of Adamawa.

    Ochoche said that the three local government areas selected for the second phase comprised Gombi, Maiha and Michika, adding that under the first phase undertaken last year, 7000 pupils benefitted from 13 schools in Hong, Mubi North and Mubi South Local Government Areas of the state.

    “It is so exciting to us from VSF to be back in Adamawa in continuation of what we are mandated to do by the President.

    “We are here in continuation of the implementation of our education empowerment programme.

    “VSF from inception has focus much on human dimension on recovery from the insurgency; we want to encourage every child and teacher back to school, and to help change the situation of the narrative that gave birth to Boko Haram in the first place.

    “And we are convinced that there is no way we can change the narrative without addressing the issue of education and things that will enhance education,” Ochoche said.

    He reiterated the commitment of the fund to work with Adamawa Government in reducing to the barest minimum the number of children out of school.

    The Director Programme of the fund, Prof. Nana Tanko, who lauded stakeholders working with the fund in the implementation of the programme, tasked parents and school authorities to ensure maximum utilisation of the learning and teaching materials provided.

    Tanko cautioned against misuse such as selling the materials, and urged the public to monitor and seize any of the items found being sold in the market or anywhere.

    “If you see any of these support materials on sale, please seize it,” Tanko advised.

    Gov. Muhammadu Bindow, who was represented by the state Commissioner for Education, Mrs Kaletapwa Farauta, lauded the various interventions by VSF and assured it of his administration’s maximum support.

    Bindow said that the state had also declared a state of emergency in the education sector and was following that up with series of actions.

    “We are following up our declaration of state of emergency in education sector with a lot of activities and we are mindful of what we are doing to ensure that our children of school age are not left roaming the streets. We are most grateful for your support,” he said.

    The District Head of Garkida, Malam Saidu Tarfa, expressed gratitude to the fund and other government and non-governmental organisations for their support to the community and others affected by the insurgency.

    Tarfa assured the fund of sustained support and cooperation of the community in its effort to boost education and rehabilitate the area.

    Highlight of the occasion was distribution of school bags, sandals, text and exercise books, among other materials, to pupils of Garkida “C” Primary School.
