  • Minimum wage: NLC wants Buhari to communicate approval to NASS

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Plateau chapter, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to promptly communicate his approval of the N30,000 minimum to the National Assembly.

Mr Jibrin Banchir, its chairman, made the call on Tuesday in Jos, when members of the NLC staged a peaceful protest to seek a legal endorsement of the new minimum pay package.

“It is pertinent for the President to send his approval to the National Assembly to ensure that the new minimum wage is legalised.

“The approval of the increment cannot be implemented without being legalized. The President should do this without any hesitation,” he said.

The chairman regretted that the fight for better wages had been on for four years, pointing out that workers in Ghana had their wages increased without such hassles.

The workers held various placards with inscriptions such as “N30,000 minimum wage is a right, pay it before elections or be voted out”, “we demand full implementation, we say no to percentage implementation”, among others.

The workers took their protest to the Government House where the Plateau Deputy Governor, Soni Tyoden, commended them for the peaceful protest and expressed the state government’s readiness to pay the new amount.

He, however, urged the workers to be orderly in their conduct and allow due process to prevail.

  • Buhari’s gift to the IGP

It is no longer news that President Muhammadu Buhari seems to have made up his mind to extend the tenure of the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, possibly by six months according to some media reports. The IGP was officially billed to retire from the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) on January 3, given that he has attained the mandatory 35 years in service. This gift of a six-month extension the IGP Idris is to enjoy is not unique to him in the history of the Buhari administration. It is a questionable abidance on the part of President Buhari by the wisdom in the famous idiom, what is sauced for the geese is sauced for the gander.

On two different occasions the president extended the tenures of the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Abayomi Olonisakin, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, and the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok Ete-Ibas. Having been appointed on July 13, 2015, their respective tenures ended on July 13, 2017. The first extension of tenure for these security chiefs was in July to December 2017. Towards the end of December 2017, the president, exercising the power of his office as enshrined in Section 218 (1) and (2) of the 1999 Constitution, renewed the tenures of office of the defence and service chiefs – this time without any exact termination date. This silence on a finish date explains why those chiefs are still in office. As in their case, the question of why IGP Idris deserves an extension of tenure is still pleading for a logical answer.

Beyond the fact that he is constitutionally empowered to renew the service time of his security aurochs, the president does not see any compelling reason to examine the quality of performances of these men in office before gifting them with more service space. For had President Buhari done so – training his mind objectively on the verifiable evidence of the security chiefs’ performances on the job –, it would have been unambiguously clear to him that they did not deserve the gift of tenure extension he generously showered on them. It is a no-brainer that, to maintain and improve on what works, viable organizations, corporations, and countries attract, maintain, and reward performing minds. Sadly, this cherished tradition of maintaining the best and rewarding performance is alien to the Buhari administration.

What is IGP Idris being rewarded for? Exceptional transformation of the NPF? Provable improvement of the security situation across the country under his watch? Far from it. There can be no doubt that IGP Idris’s tenure in office in about the last three years has not catalysed significant improvement in the security situation of the country. In many regions of the country, insecurity of varied colourations stands out like the epaulets of a fashion-conscious officer. The IGP understands his job mainly as fighting the president’s political opponents. He is more active at stoking the fire of needless controversies and thumbing his nose at revered institutions than acquitting himself competently on the policing job. If he was not disregarding the directives of the president as the famous Benue case showed, he was either telling the National Assembly that he could not honour their invitation to give account of his stewardship, or instructing state governors to open up their states for unstructured cattle grazing. Under IGP Idris’s watch, the army under the equally disturbing leadership of Lt. Gen. Buratai has gained more visibility discharging the functions of the NPF. If there is any achievements IGP Idris could point to for which he merits the gift of a tenure extension in office, they will be at best microscopic and tokenistic, and of no enduring value to either the NPF or the country.

Puzzlingly, instead of using the occasion of the expiration of IGP Idris’s tenure expiration to refresh the NPF with a far more competent, disciplined, and innovative head, President Buhari elected to reward averageness. What counts for excellence and thus fitting for reward in President Buhari’s reckoning is not difficult to fathom. It is sheer underperformance, incompetence, and the aridity of ordinariness. The appalling security condition in the land should have motivated the appointment of a new police boss. If excellence, competence, and character matter strongly to the president, he would have effortlessly observed that IGP Idris has given his best and that best is an athlete for a short-distance race. After all, it goes without saying that the presidency is as good as those who serve it.

Without any doubt, the Buhari administration is its own worst enemy. It is self-defeating for the president to keep caterwauling that the administration is not making giant strides because corruption is fighting back. No, it is not corruption that is fighting back and constituting a clog in the wheel of his administration. It is his inability to strive for excellence and embrace the Socratic imperative to engage in self-examination. Many Nigerians have looked in vain for evidence of introspection and self-examination in the administration. Because this important ingredient is missing in the dish of governance the administration is providing, it has not been able to go beyond scratching the surface of good governance. This lack of self-examination so much hamstrings the administration that what it has going well for it is the active functioning of its propaganda mill. This lack of critical stock-taking makes the fine tradition of reshuffling of cabinet and re-examination of actions and policies foreign to the administration.

The Socratic imperative to engage in self-examination may still come to the aid of the Buhari administration if it does not continue to abjure it – assuming he wins the February presidential election. If the president and his kitchen cabinet embraces this invaluable element, it will be abundantly manifest to them that garlanding the shoulders of IGP Idris with an extension of tenure is – although lawful – an unhelpful political expedient. If truly national security is a very serious matter (the reason for which people like the Shiite leader and his wife, and the former NSA Dasuki are hidden against their wills), then a tired and less innovative mind like IGP Idris needs to be allowed to enjoy his deserved retirement.

  • ASUU strike: Varsity teachers beg Buhari to show mercy

The two months old industrial action embarked upon by the  Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Monday took a new twist as  the university teachers came down on bended kneels, begging President Muhammadu Buhari to show mercy on students by quickly meeting the demands of the Union.

ASUU has been on strike since November 5, 2018.

The Union said it has no intention whatsoever to disconnect the education sector, rather  it explained that the reason why they decided to embark on the strike is  to make the ruling class responsible for the future of Nigerian children.

ASUU in a release signed by Dr Deji Omole, University of Ibadan Chairman, described the call by the Labour Minister, Chris Ngige on the Union to have Mercy on students and call off its strike “a merciless utterance”.

According to Omole, the statement by the Minister exposed the ruling government as insincere and callous to the wellbeing of Nigerian students.

ASUU said since government was a continuum it was regrettable that Chris Ngige who is being paid salaries put in place by previous governments as a Minister will say previous governments caused the problem of the strike by signing 2009 agreements.

The ASUU boss who noted that the present government has not shown mercy to Education and Health of the nation said the Union has a genuine concern to truncate the plans of the ruling capitalist to destroy the future of Nigerian youths by not funding Education.

Education he maintained is an instrument of liberation which will stop many youths from joining kidnapping gangs, armed robbery, militancy and terrorism.

He said “we are patriots otherwise we would not go on strike. We would have been looking and allow everything to be destroyed. But we cannot allow our future (children) to be taught in zoo-like conditions.

“This kind of education system cannot give us a leader who will be kind to others if we are not kind to them by giving them the best environment to learn from. Nigerians should join us to beg President Buhari to meet our demands on time “.

  • Why we will vote for PMB – Bus Conductors Association

The Bus Conductors Association of Nigeria (BCAN) has expressed its readiness to re-elect President Muhammadu Buhari in the February general election.

Mr Israel Adeshola, the BCAN National President, disclosed this in an interview with our reporters on Monday in Lagos.

Adeshola said that the association was convinced beyond doubt that the only way to guarantee better future for the country was through good governance and sincere leadership.

“The only way to achieve this is for us to collectively ensure that President Buhari return in 2019.

“It takes patience, sacrifice and honest commitment to rebuild what had been destroyed and that’s what the administration has been doing since it took over the helm of affairs.

“We all know that to destroy is very easy but to build is always not easy.

“The last 16 years of past administration witnessed the destruction of our economy as never before in the history of the country.

“The impunity that pervaded the previous administration greatly undermined the economic growth of the nation.

“There is no doubt that President Buhari is genuinely committed to ensuring that Nigeria regains her place as the giant of Africa both economically and politically,” he said.

The BCAN leader said that the association has advised its members to guide their Permanent Voter’s Cards (PVCs) jealously as they crave for the return of the president.

“The decision we make today will determine how good or bad our tomorrow will be,” he added.

Adeshola said that now was the time Nigerian citizens must take that crucial decision of tomorrow to ensure better future for ourselves and coming generations.

According to him, Buhari was committed to bettering the lot of Nigerian citizens through sustainable economic programmes aimed at improving social economic conditions of people.

“One of such programme is the empowerment of small scale businesses for sustainable growth and development where many people have benefited.

“President Buhari does not believe in given you fish but to teach you how to fish by yourself so that you can be self-reliant, those who give you fish today may not give you tomorrow,” he said.

Adeshola said that Buhari return in 2019 would allow him complete the good work he has started by ensuring the quality of life of an average Nigerian and ensure future of unborn generations were secured and protected.

The BCAN president however called for unity and oneness among its members and the electorate to work as a team, collaborate with one another to ensure comprehensive victory for Buhari.

  • Minimum wage: We have not declared strike, says NLC

The Nigeria Labour Congress on Monday put to rest speculations of a nationwide strike action which is supposed to begin on Tuesday, saying it has not called for any strike action to protest the delay in transmitting the minimum wage bill to the National Assembly.

General Secretary of Congress, Dr.  Peter Ozo-Eson said in a statement that what the congress has called for was a day of protest and mobilization across the states of the federation to sensitize Nigerians and workers on the minimum wage issue.

The NLC scribe said the National Day of protest does not translate into a strike action, adding that whenever labour decides on a date for a national strike, Nigerians will be informed accordingly.

The statement reads “It has come to our attention that some section of the news media has largely misrepresented our action plan in reaction to the delay in transmitting the recommendations of the Tripartite Committee on a new National Minimum Wage to the National Assembly by President Muhammadu Buhari.

“It should be recalled that the National Executive Council of NLC met on 17th of December last year and directed that we hold nationwide mobilization of workers and our allies if by 31st December 2018 the bill on the National Minimum Wage has yet to be sent to the National Assembly to be passed as an Act of Parliament.

“We immediately announced then that on Tuesday, 8th January 2019, there will be a nationwide mass mobilization and protests simultaneously across all states in Nigeria. This does not translate to a strike.

“It is on record that each time we had cause to embark on a national strike, we say so publicly without any equivocation. We still don’t understand where the story about a strike commencing tomorrow came from.

“Already, all our State Councils, affiliate unions and allies in other pro people mass organizations now popularly referred to as Civil Society Organizations have been fully informed and mobilized to ensure the success of tomorrow’s mass protests in all the states and the Federal Capital Territory.

“When a date is decided for the commencement of a strike subsequently, we will inform the public appropriately.”

  • Pro-democracy group hails Buhari’s performance at Town Hall meeting

A pro-democracy group, Democracy Support Coalition lauded President Muhammadu Buhari for his sterling performance at the Town Hall meeting organized and broadcast by the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) tagged ‘The Candidates’.
President Buhari, who appeared on the programme with Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, highlighted some of his achievements since assuming power in 2015.
The group said Buhari during the programe clearly demonstrated his clear understanding of the issues militating against the progress of Nigeria as he responded to germane queries from Nigerians.
Rotimi Adeyemi, Esq, Executive Director, noted Buhari in the course of the programme was able to move away from theoretical and textbook posturing to demonstrate with real life project execution what he has done for the country and what he would be able to do when given another four years in office.
He said in a a statement that “No other debate can be more brutal given the candour with which Nigerians interacted with President Buhari and Vice President Osinbajo yet they were able to satisfactorily sell their vision for the country in a way that completely convinced the electorates that voting for the other candidates would amount to wasting ballot papers.
“All what these other candidates have offered from their other engagements pale in relevance to what the APC candidate has promised.
“We encourage Nigerians to accept President Buhari as the best choice for the country especially when the short and long term solutions to the problems of the country can only be found in the template he has presented. He has the kind of courage needed to address these problems.
“Some other candidates might have presented rosy solutions but a deeper assessment of their promises clearly show that they are busy trying to impress their fans even when it is obvious that their proposals are unworkable while they themselves lack the will and experience to implement such assuming their solutions are practical in the first place.

“It is impressive that the President subjugated his candidacy to the needs of the nation as he did not shy from saying the truth in response to the questions of Nigerians during the Town Hall Discussion Program.
“Other candidates would have, out of desperation to win, lie their way through the entire programme in the hope of deceiving voters. Their lies would have been propelled by their being addicted to manipulating facts to appear saintly when they had never for once in their lifetimes harboured any good intentions towards the country.
“We congratulate President Buhari for seizing the opportunity provided by the programme to engage with the citizenry, which he has done at all times the chance presents itself to engage with Nigerians. His habit of stating matters the way they are without hiding behind deceptive words is responsible for his ever growing following amongst the masses that form the support base that will hand him another term of four years in office.
“The contents of the shallow promises being made by other candidates are well known to Nigerians. They range from those that have concluded on how they will sell national assets to their friends to those who want to use Nigeria as the guinea pig in their next economic experiment and to those that want to officially commission the country as a drug hub.
“President Buhari on the other hand has rendered a satisfactory account of his under four years of stewardship, which gave the assurance that another four years will make the plants he has sowed to begin yielding fruits.
“We are therefore able to conclude that the results are in already and President Muhammadu Buhari is the winner in the round about convincing citizens on how Nigeria should proceed in the next four years.”
  • Why we dumped Atiku, PDP – Bello

A couple of weeks back, the Coalition of aggrieved Support Groups numbering over 145, formally withdrew their support for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and pledged their support and loyalty to president Muhammadu Buhari of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), for the 2019 presidential election. The leader of the coalition, Bello Osaretin, recently spoke with Assistant Editor, Dare Odufowokan, on why they took that decision. Excerpts.

Your group during the week dumped the PDP and Atiku to work for Buhari. What informed such decision?

It is quite obvious that the leaders and chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has not learn their lessons. It is now very clear that the party is not serious about returning to power in 2019. How do you expect a party that betrayed itself in 2015 to still win election come 2019 with the same set of characters that were at the saddle of command when APC defeated the party four years ago.

That was when the PDP was even a ruling party. They say they have changed and are now true democrats, but the issues of imposition and impunity have not been addressed. Coupled with the symptoms of  the use and dump syndrome that has vastly infested the party. Sadly too, the party lacks a reward management system for true members to be fully integrated into party activities.

It is for these reasons and many more that we decided to be separated from the PDP and its presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, who we have been supporting and worked tirelessly for since he declared his interest in the 2019 presidential race. As I am speaking to you, we are no longer in support of both the PDP and Atiku. We have decided to move away from them both.

Our decision to quit the Atiku project was occasioned by the total neglect and disregards for the sanctity of support groups existence, acknowledgment and recognition of groups contributions coupled with nepotic deployment in favour of some selected support groups with ethnic affinity, administrative recklessness in management of support groups goodwill, rebarbative use of derogatory terms such as mere volunteers and nuisance to ascribed support groups instrumental for Atiku to defeat eleven co-contestants in PDP Presidential Convention and the use of coercive force, such as thugs and political touts to unleash mayhem on support groups that we are disgruntled to the injustice prevalent in Atiku’s camp.

But some analysts have described your actions as mere political stunt. What do you have to say to this?

Whoever think our actions are mere political stunts must be a new entrance or a political neophyte in the game of politics. How would any rational politician think it is a stunt. Believe me, there was a good ground for us to be disgruntled. People need to understand how we feel that after our support had led to the emergence of Atiku Abubakar as presidential candidate, his team abandoned us.

Following his victory at the presidential primary election in Port-Harcourt, we were referred to as mere volunteers. We were neglected and left abandoned. No letter of appreciation. No acknowledgment. No recognition whatsoever.

After the victory in Port-Harcourt, the celebration was moved to Dubai, where people who never laboured for Atiku’s victory were the first to sit at the tea party, while the support groups that labored through thick and thin were neglected, abandoned, used and dumped, confirming the usual parlance of “monkey dye work baboon dey chop” which has been the usual style of PDP as a political party.

You claimed to be aggrieved Atiku supporters. First, what are the proves that your group actually worked for Atiku?

If we didn’t work for Atiku Abubakar there wouldn’t have been the need for this agitations. We worked serious for him by using our resources to mobilize and engage critical stakeholders, especially the delegates, because it was a structured delegates campaign. Vehicles, banners, billboard, sourvires were branded to create serious public awareness for him, amongst other things.

And we are known to him and his handlers. That is why nobody has come out to deny us. They are now doing what they ought t have done long before we decided to cut ties with them. Our decision to quit Atiku’s presidential project is informed and inspired by the outcome of wide consultations and engagements embark upon over the past few months. We didn’t just leave, we consulted widely.

Since when have you been supporting Atiku and what sort of relationship did you have with him and his political camp?

We have been supporting Atiku since 2011.  The relationship has been a political one. But we became aggrieved because nobody seems to give us recognition for the good job done by support groups. It was very very appalling. We became Aggrieved because we were being used and dumped. We made efforts tot get issues resolved. We wrote several letters but all to no avail.

Do you think President Buhari can win the 2019 election?

Why not? The man has done extremely well He has brought integrity into the governance system of Nigeria. There is no match to Buhari in 2019. It is integrity versus corruption. Nigerians are still remembering the past and comparing it with the current situation. Buhari has won the next election for the APC across the country with his performance.

Like I told you, we didnt just leave PDP, we consulted widely and I can now tell you Nigerians prefer Buhari and the APC to Atiku and the PDP. That was why we unanimously agreed to denounce our membership of Atiku Presidential Campaign Office and as well withdraws total supports for Atiku Abubakar’s presidential ambition nationwide with immediate effect and direct all affiliate bodies to do same forthwith.

On the flip-side, we the members of aggrieved Atiku Support Groups Coalition, warehousing more than 145 aggrieved support groups across Nigeria, are now promising to mobilise our members to give President Buhari six million votes across the country to ensure that he is not stopped by the PDP in 2019. We are of the opinion that he should be allowed to continue the good works he is doing.

Integrity question will be at stake here. We need to put that in context. I still believe Buhari will come on top at end of the day. Also the choices of the running mates have set a voting pattern in motion. The west and the east will look at the persons running as vice president and decide which party should be given the chance. The south will determine the next election. Take my words for it, Buhari will win in 2019.

Are you now members of the APC?

We have not officially declared for APC, but we have pledged allegiance to Mr. President through Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. But let me say this categorically; it is a sin to remain in PDP. Nigerians have spoken, they will never return to Egypt, so PDP will never return to power in Nigeria.
