  • Buhari is hero of Nigerian democracy – Group

Ask Obasanjo to stop distracting attention from stolen Power funds

The Buhari Media Organization has said that President Muhammadu Buhari could be described as the father of Nigeria’s modern democracy, saying his courage in declaring June 12 as Democracy day and righting the wrongs and ills of 25 years of a faulty democratic foundation was a political masterstroke.

In a statement signed by the Chairman, Austin Braimoh and Secretary, Cassidy Madueke, the group described the President as the true hero of democracy, noting that he has set high standards of political maturity and established that the will of the people must be respected in Nigeria.

They said: “President Buhari has established that under him, votes would count, even where they were illegally discountenanced, they would count, and honour would be ascribed to those who deserve it.

“The President’s move has proven his critics and their baseless opinions about him wrong. President Buhari has not just claimed to espouse and embrace democratic ideals, he has gone ahead to set worthy and enviable standards for democracy in Nigeria.”

The group noted that the President, unlike his predecessors, has not interfered with any state or local government elections with the apparatus of state, but rather he has allowed for free and fair elections dictated by the will of the people to take place under him.

The statement said the President’s insistence on the holding of Party Congresses in the APC in the bid to ensure true intra-party democracy is a further proof of his demonstration of democratic ideals worthy of recognition.

“No President in Nigeria has shown a truer embrace and practice of democracy as President Buhari has. His respect for the principles that every vote must count, that the will of the people must not be thwarted and that democratic institutions must be upheld has been further expressed in his declaration that June 12 will be the new Democracy Day; there is no gainsaying that President Buhari is the father of Nigeria’s modern democracy”, he said.

The BMO asked former President Olusegun Obasanjo not to use his recent allegation of planned arrest on trumped-up charges by the current administration to dodge questions on misappropriation of $16 billion on Power during his eight years’ administration.

The group noted that what former President Obasanjo is trying to do with his unfounded allegation of  imminent arrest is to divert the minds of Nigerians from his unanswered question of squandering the humongous $16bn on power during his eight years administration.

“We want to state that the Buhari Administration will not be distracted by any shenanigan, any unfounded allegation from any quarter, especially those capable of causing disaffection among Nigerians and portraying government in bad light.

“Former President Obasanjo should not be afraid of any trumped-up charges as that is not in the character of President Muhammadu Buhari nor that of his administration.  Only the guilty should be worried.”

They assured Nigerians that the current administration is strongly committed to the tenets of democracy, freedom of speech and the right to dissent, stressing that those who, in their time, were untethered to those principles would find it hard to believe.

  • No mortal power can stop Buhari’s re-election – Emir

The Emir of Daura, Katsina State, Alhaji Umar Farouk Umar, declared on Friday that President Muhammadu Buhari looks unstoppable in his re-election bid next year, as  no mortal power can constitute any obstacle in his quest.

“No mortal power will prevent Buhari’s re-election. He has five  more years to go from date,” Umar said while receiving a former governor of Abia State , Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu in his palace.

“At the end of his second term tenure , Nigerians will even crave for his third term, because of what he might have achieved, God will shame any one against Buhari’s re-election,’’ he added.

The Emir warned those he said were out to frustrate Buhari’s re-election bid, and said God will shame them

Kalu had earlier told the emir that some people are bent on frustrating Buhari’s re-election bid, but that their effort would not come to fruition.

He said a prominent figure from the southern part of the country was among those spearheading the issue, but that Buhari’s noble cause would prevail at end of the day.

He said the President had “performed excellently in various sectors especially in addressing the problem of corruption” which had given the county a bad name for many years.

The former governor was in the state as part of sensitization for the actualization of another term for the president, an effort he was making through the National Movement for the Re-election of Buhari.

Kalu also visited Governor Aminu Bello Masari, and the Emir of Katsina, Abdulmumini Kabir Usman to promote the president’s re-election bid.

Kalu said Buhari deserves another term in office in view of the people-oriented programs carried out in the country, even as he condemned those unduly criticizing him over his ambition.

He said “Buhari deserves re-election not criticism to enable him complete the good work he has begun for the country.”

He added that come 2019 general election; there was no amount of intimidation, blackmail or attacks that could stop the president from seeking another term in office.

Also speaking, governor Aminu Bello Masari called on Buhari not to be bothered by criticisms, but give attention to his good work for Nigeria.

Masari described Buhari’s critics as enemies of democracy, with call on Nigerians to come out enmass next year and vote for Buhari, to enable him consolidate on his achievements.

  • Always remember lessons of Ramadan, Buhari urges Nigerians

Buhari to Nigerians: Your sacrifices won’t be in vain

President Muhammadu Buhari has called on Nigerians to put the virtues of Islam into practice beyond the fasting season.

This was contained in his Sallah message to mark the end of the Ramadan fasting period.

While congratulating Muslims on completing “this spiritually significant month of sacrifice”, the President urged them to reflect on the importance of Ramadan in becoming good ambassadors of Islam at all times.

The President, in a statement by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and publicity, Garba Shehu, said   “religion should be the moral compass for all believers in their public and personal lives.

“If people allow the teachings of their religions to influence their conducts, problems such as corruption, which diverts public funds to private pockets, would have been eliminated in the society.” he added

He regretted, however, that “selfishness and greed have overcome people’s conscience so much that they don’t have moral inhibitions in the pursuit of their greed.”

He said “it is impossible to separate morality from religion, and removing this connection encourages corrupt leaders and other exploiters to commit atrocities against the society.”

“I always wonder why any true believer, be they politicians, civil servants or businessmen, would seek to make profits from the misfortunes of others”, the President added.

He also urged ordinary Nigerians to stop glorifying thieves by treating them with disdain for bringing hardships to others.

President Buhari enjoined religious leaders to always pray for peace and unity in the country and avoid making inflammatory utterances that endanger peace or promote conflicts.

The President also appealed to fellow citizens to forgive one another and embrace peace.

In this respect, President Buhari lauded the families of recipients of national honours for showing good examples to Nigerians and urged our country men and women to copy their good examples.

He thanked Nigerians for their patience and assured that their sacrifices will not be in vain, adding that reforming a country that was pushed into near decay on account of corruption comes with teething pains.

“But these pains are temporary, the APC administration which I am privileged to lead, is beholden to the ordinary Nigerians and will leave no stone unturned to make their security, welfare and happiness our priority”, the President further reassured.

  • PDP knocks Buhari, APC over handling of MTN fine

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has charged President Muhammadu Buhari to come out clear on allegations of corruption and sharp practices that have pervaded the recovery of the N1.03tn fine imposed on telecom giant, MTN Nigeria.

In a statement on Thursday by its spokesman, Kola Ologbondiyan, said President Buhari and his administration have a lot of questions to answer on how the fine was reduced to N330 billion.

The party tasked the Presidency to address allegations that certain interests in the Presidential villa, said to be very close to President Buhari, allegedly took a bribe of N500 million to reduce the fine imposed on the telecom firm.

The statement said, “It is, to say the least, disgusting that while this allegation of bribery at the Villa has remained uncleared by the Presidency, President Buhari, the same African Union (AU) Anti-Corruption Champion, on Wednesday, approved the frittering of another N500 million from the same fund, under controversial claims of professional fees to unnamed persons for unspecified services.

“For a government that prides itself as fighting corruption, the nation had long expected Mr. President to clear the air on the sordid allegation of bribery in the Presidential Villa. Rather than progressing in that direction, President Buhari has continued to act as if the demand by Nigerians, to know the truth about the alleged bribery in the villa over the payment of MTN fine, does not matter.

“Furthermore, the PDP challenges President Buhari to come out clear on the basis for the purported N500million professional fee. What due process instruments did he rely upon? Who are these lawyers? Who contracted them; under what terms and what services did they render that were beyond the Attorney General of the Federation and the team of lawyers at the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) and the Ministry of Justice?

“Now that it has become clear that the Buhari Presidency is entangled in sleazes over the NTN fine saga, the PDP charges President Buhari to end his concealment of corruption in the villa and show his sincerity by allowing an open inquest into his administration’s dealings on the MTN fine payment”.

  • Dickson urges Buhari to start work on Brass LNG, refinery

Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson, on Wednesday appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari, to remove obstacles delaying commencement of work on the Brass Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) and refinery project in the state.

Speaking at a stakeholder’s meeting of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Yenagoa, the governor said the lack of federal projects in Bayelsa was unacceptable.

In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Francis Ottah-Agbo, the governor said the two projects would give Ijaw people a sense of belonging and expand the revenue base of the country.

He lamented the backwardness of the Ijaw in terms of development and urged the Federal Government and multinational corporations to partner the state government to tackle infrastructural deficit in the area.

Dickson said his administration was working hard with lean resources to fund development projects such as construction of major roads and bridges, schools and health institutions.

He said:  “I play politics of development. My team and I, came in with anger to develop this place and by the grace of God, we have achieved that to some enviable level with the able support you have all been giving as stakeholders of our great party. And we are determined to do more before we leave office for another PDP government.

“I say so because only the PDP can win any election in this state. The people of Bayelsa have seen our capacity to deliver on our promises even in the face of the worst recession that hit this state and the country in general.

“As I speak with you, work is ongoing on in the Sagbama-Ekeremor Road and we are sure of driving to Ekeremor Town by December this year. In the next few weeks, I will invite you and we all drive to Aguobiri in Southern Ijaw. Also, clearing of the Yenagoa-Ayama,Ogbia road will start in the next two weeks.

“All these are capital intensive projects and that is why we are calling on the Federal Government and other development partners to come to our aid. In one of my meetings with the President, I told him to bring back the Brass LNG and the Refinery Projects and also convene a stakeholders meeting to talk about the Nembe-Brass Road.”

Dickson further urged PDP faithful with ambitions to contest the forthcoming state and National Assembly elections not to heat up the polity but maintain the discipline and decorum existing in the state chapter of the party.

Describing all political ambitions as legitimate, he asked the aspirants to pray and consult properly with readiness to uphold party supremacy as the state PDP would only feature its best in the upcoming elections.

He thanked the members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who defected to the PDP, reassuring them of full reintegration and support.

Some of the dignitaries at the stakeholders’ meeting were the Deputy Governor, Rear Admiral  John Jonah (Retd),  Chief Walter Feghabo-Amain, State PDP Chairman, Moses Cleopas, Senators Ben Murray-Bruce, Nimi Barigha Amange, Emmanuel Diffa, AVM Larry Koinya, members of the Federal House of Representatives and  Fyneman Wilson among others.

  • PDP accuses Buhari of making June 12 a Yoruba affair

The People’s Democratic Party in Edo State has accused President Muhammadu Buhari of making June 12 a Yoruba affair.

It said the essence of June 12 should reflect on all those who fought for the survival of democracy in the country instead of making it a Yoruba affair.

State chairman of the party, Chief Dan Orbih, who spoke while addressing newsmen in Benin City said some persons who fought for the actualization of democracy were not short listed in the recent list of those to be honoured.

“Today, people are talking of June 12 and nobody is talking about Prof. Omo Omoruyi. This is to me, an attempt by some group of politicians who want to make June 12 a Yoruba affair.

“What is good for those who fought for June 12 is good for all. You do not need to come from certain section of the country to be recognized for your nationalistic contributions towards our democratic government.

“So, June 12 is a watershed in the politics of Nigeria where people from all tribes supported that the military must be ease out of power.

“So, the attempt to tribalize, politicize it by the federal government is quite unfortunate”, he said.

Muritala said he was both “sad and happy.”

He made this known to reporters  at the Abiola family house at Oja Agbo, Gbagura area  of Abeokuta, Ogun State  when the state government led by the deputy governor, Mrs Yetunde Onanuga and the Secretary to the State Government,  Taiwo Adeoluwa and many interest groups staged a ‘Democracy  Walk and Rally’ from Kuto in the city centre  to the Abiola family  house where an Islamic clerics  offered prayers for the family  and for the continued peaceful repose of the soul of MKO Abiola.

He said many Nigerians are still suffering, urging the President to act urgently and alleviate the sufferings of the people.

According to him, the federal government should take care of the immediate  family of the  late politician by giving some of his children appointments, in order to perpetuate his political and democratic legacy.

He noted that the Ogun State Government had started this by appointing one of Abiola’s children,  Hafsat Abiola-Costello as a Special Adviser on Trade and Investment.

“I will say I am both happy and sad. I am very happy today for the honour done to my late brother by President  Muhammadu Buhari. But I am sad my brother is not alive to witness the honour being bestowed on him.

“Many Nigerians are hungry; things are upside down in the country.  The roads are bad,  no job, no drugs in the hospital, people are dying. I want to appeal to President Buhari to adopt some of the policies enunciated by late MKO Abiola to alleviate the suffering of the masses.

“Though Abiola was rich but we are also currently suffering what ordinary Nigerians are suffering.

“Once more, I thank Buhari for  honouring him. However, I want to further appeal to the Federal Government to go a step further by taking care of late Chief MKO Abiola’s immediate family, by giving some of them appointments at the Federal level.

“Ogun State Government  has started  doing that, as the current administration  led by Senator Ibikunle Amosun, has appointed one of his children into his cabinet.  We want the Federal Government  to also do the same.  Because we want to continue  to hear that name ‘Abiola,” he said.

Senator Shehu Sani, NADECO chieftain Rear Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu, Are Ona Kakanfo of Yoruba Gani Adams, and other Pro-democracy activists on Tuesday restated their demand for restructuring of the polity.

They said the gains of the democratic struggle in Nigeria would be incomplete until the nation is restructured to allow all component parts of the country be in full control of its resources.

They also demanded the full declaration of the results of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, to remove the cloud of uncertainty over the actual winner, as well as turning Abiola’s  residence into a national monument and a presidential library.

Sani who had earlier expressed his profound appreciation to President Muhammadu Buhari for his courage in recognising June 12 as “the authentic democracy day” and honouring Chief MKO Abiola with the highest honour of GCFR.

“By that singular honour President Buhari has unofficially recognised Abiola as the winner of that election, what remains is for him to give an executive order directing the then National Electoral Commission Chairman Prof. Humphrey Nwosu, to officially declare the rest of the suspended result and declare the late Abiola winner of the election so that we can move on as a nation.”

He said while the movement acknowledged the courage behind the preside it’s gesture, they however reject in its entirety any attempt to use it to score any cheap political point ahead of next year poll.

“Mr President, we accept the gift which is coming 25 years after that election, but reject any intended political motive it especially if it is a solicitation for votes.”

He said in his attempt to correct the errors of the past, the President inadvertently has recognised traitors of the June 12 struggle, adding that the real heroes of democracy would resist any attempt by such men to rewrite history.

Speaking on the symbolism of the June 12, Sani said though its annulment prevented Nigerians from benefitting from the genuine intention to correct its errors, by calling on the President to put an end to senseless politically motivated killings across the country and be more dogged in his anti-corruption crusade.

The National Coordinator of the Oodu People’s Congress Are Gani Adams said the recognition of June 12 and posthumous awards bequeathed to Abiola is as a result of the dogged struggle of pro-democratic activists, especially men of the OPC who resisted the injustice that the annulment represented.

He said: “Today, through the awards bequeathed to heroes of our Democratic struggle, we have silenced the voices of evil and their machinations on the country.

The Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Journalists Lagos State Chapter, Dr Quasim Akinreti lauded President Muhammadu Buhari for his courageous deed, and urged him to declare the late hero as the authentic winner of the June 12 election.

Hr called for an end to the mindless killings going on in the country as well as restructuring that would give full autonomy to component units of the country.

Convener of Women Arise Dr Joe Okei Odumakin said though she got her invitation to be at the villa, she had decided to cancel her appearance to be at this year’s event.

She however lauded the recognition of June 12 as Nigerias democracy day and the recent signing of the Not too young to run bill by the president as a step in the right direction.

The guest lecturer, Prof Derin Ologbenla said since the intervention of the military in Nigeria’s democratic journey, there has been a deliberate play up of ethnicity and religion to divide the country.

He charged all politicians to learn how Abiola won massively in 1993 and adopt his mandate to pull the nation away from the slide to poverty.

…To save additional 1.554m under- one children by 2018

The country’s request for extension of transition from the GAVI funds has been approved by the alliance board, Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole has said.

Prof. Adewole said GAVI board approved the funding envelope and the decision for extension of transitional period from 2021 to 2028.

The investment is worth $2.7 billion, with GAVI committing $1.03 billion while, the Federal Government counterpart contribution is in excess of $1.9 billion.

Making it the largest singular investment of any kind in the health sector since the history of the Primary Health Care System in Nigeria, thereby heralding a new path to improving the health of Nigerians.

The fund will enable Nigeria provide vaccines for its children over the next ten years (2018-2028).

GAVI, the Vaccine Alliance is the largest global coalition of the public and private sector with the shared goal of accelerating equal access to new and underutilized vaccines for children living in the world’s poorest countries.

Nigeria and GAVI in 2001 entered into an agreement to strengthen immunization system across the country. During this period, GAVI supported the country with the introduction of life saving vaccines, which include PCV, IPV and Pentavalent vaccines, and provided additional support for non-vaccine operations worth $732,130,326 and as a result, saved over 2 million lives in the last 17 years.

However, following the rebasing of the economy, Nigeria rose above GAVI eligible countries and the need to transit from GAVI support programme by 2021.

This new approval, the minister said will help the country to save additional lives of 1,539,651 million under-1 children by 2028.

Adewole who addressed the media yesterday in Abuja said the extension was as a result of the renewed commitment of the current administration and demonstrable leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari in enshrining accountability and transparency in all governments’ dealings especially with donor agencies.

The minister who was excited to broke the news to journalists said, “It is with great pleasure that I inform you that on Wednesday, June 6 2018, the GAVI Board meeting in Geneva, Switzerland, approved Nigeria’s proposal for GAVI transition, the Nigeria Strategy for Routine Immunization and Primary Health Care Systems’ Strengthening (NSIPSS).

“This investment, worth over $2.7 billion of which GAVI has committed $1.03 billionwhile the Federal Government counterpart contribution is in excess of $1.9 billion, will enable Nigeria provide vaccines for its children over the next ten years (2018-2028). Making it the largest singular investment of any kind in the health sector since the history of the Primary Health Care System in Nigeria and heralds a new path toimproving the health of Nigerians.

“The GAVI board approval of the funding envelope and the decision for extension of transitional period from 2021 to 2028 was a direct testament of the renewed commitment of this current administration and demonstrable leadership of Mr. President in enshrining accountability and transparency in all governments’ dealings especially with donor agencies,” he said.

Speaking on the gains of the extension, the minister said, “With this approval by GAVI, Nigeria stands to save the lives of additional 1,539,651 under-1 children by 2028 by driving immunization rates up to 85% in all states and improving the supply chain; while rebuilding financial credibility and trust, transforming the organization structure of Primary Health Care (PHC) in Nigeria, consolidating gains in polio eradication and revitalizing the Primary Health Care System.

“This comes at an auspicious time to complement government’s efforts to revitalize the primary health care system through the provision of the minimum package of care using the basic health care provision fund, all geared towards strengthening the PHC system in Nigeria. The PHC system caters for over 70% of the population who are in most need of health. Ten thousand (10,000) PHC centres will benefit from this where each PHC is fully equipped to provide the basic minimum package of care.”

  • RMAFC commends FG on review of Production Sharing Contracts

The Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission ( RMAFC ) has commended the Federal Government on the approval given by President Muhammadu Buhari to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation ( NNPC ) to enable it undertake a review of all Production Sharing Contracts ( PSCs ) between it and its various partners to reflect the current realities in the industry.

In a press statement signed by Mr. Ibrahim Mohammed, RMAFC’s Spokesperson, the Commission recalled that it had earlier thrown its weight behind the proposed review of the PSCs approved by the Federal Executive Council ( FEC ) at its meeting held on Wednesday, 13th December, 2017.

The statement quoted the RMAFC Acting Chairman, Shettima Umar Abba Gana stressing that “the Commission viewed the move by the FG as a welcome development and commendable as the Commission, that has the constitutional responsibility of monitoring revenue accruals into and disbursement of revenue from the Federation Account had been consistently calling for the review of these contracts for the past seven (7) years adding that these contracts had not been reviewed nine (9) years after both conditions stipulated in the relevant provision of the Act have elapsed, thereby leading to the huge revenue loss of about $21 billion by the Country in the last 20 years”.

It would be recalled that the Minister of State for Petroleum,  Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, recently announced that the government had approved steps to amend Section 17 of the Deep Offshore and Inland basin Production Sharing Contracts Act, 1999 which specifically provides that the 1993 PSCs should be reviewed once the price of crude oil exceeds $20 a barrel or fifteen (15) years after the contracts i.e. 2008.  To this end, the Commission advised that Government should take appropriate steps to ensure the review of these agreements with due diligence.

Read also: No new revenue formula, no new minimum wages, says RMAFC

Similarly, RMAFC recalls that in April, 2016, it drew the attention of Government to the fact that three (3) main contract types namely Joint Venture, Production Sharing and Service Contracts were in use in the Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry.  Having carefully examined the fiscal terms of each contract and the associated revenue inflow into the Federation Account therefrom, the Commission lamented that the PSCs as represented by the 1993 PSC’s which should have been renegotiated as far back as 2008 has yet to be done, thus causing the Federation Revenue losses due to the unfavourable terms of the contracts.

RMAFC further advised the Federal Government to restore production in Joint Venture Contract to previous level of approximately 108 million barrel per day and also requested OPEC to increase Nigeria’s quota because of the country’s population.
“It should be noted that the JVC makes the highest contribution to the Federation Account compared to other revenue streams,” the statement said.
