2019: No better candidate than Buhari – Marwa

The All Progressives Congress’ (APC) chieftain, Gen. Buba Marwa, on Tuesday, said so far, there was no better presidential candidate for the 2019 presidential election in the APC than President Muhammadu Buhari.

Marwa, who is also a former military governor of Lagos State, made this disclosure in Yola after a meeting of stakeholders comprising 20 organisations in Adamawa.

The meeting was organised by the Buba Marwa organisation, where the candidature of Buhari was endorsed for a re-election in 2019.

On the exit of the former Vice President Atiku Abubakar from the APC, Marwa said although, the move was a big loss to the party, it would not affect the chances of APC in Adamawa and even at the national level.

  • Amnesty: militants laud Buhari, Akeredolu

    Amnesty: militants laud Buhari, Akeredolu

A militant group in Ondo State, the United Sea Wolf Avenger, has commended President Muhammadu Buhari for incorporating militants in the state into the Federal Government Amnesty programme.

The group, in a statement by its leaders, General Deji Ehinmowo and General Secretary, Akinfemi Raymond, appealed to the Federal Government not to extend its Amnesty programmes.

The state Gov. Rotimi Akeredolu, had on November 9, during the proclamation of Amnesty armed youths issued a 21-day ultimatum to ex-militants in the state to surrender their arms.

The group also commended Akeredolu for his commitment to the Amnesty programme and the development of the riverine community of the state.

It appealed to the governor not to extend the Amnesty programme, claiming that the “21 days window’’ was enough to the militants in the various camps to surrender their arms.

“Following the 21 days ultimatum for the submission of arms by militants in the riverine area of Ondo State which ended on November 30, the United Sea Wolf Avenger appeal to the governor not to extend the date because people have turned the exercise to trade.

“It is regrettable that people who cannot handle ordinary cutlass have suddenly become militants through the amnesty window.

“Twenty-one days is more than enough to move arms from camps to submission centres within the state.

“The truth is that anybody that is complaining of time should be asked, what had he doing for 21 days. Most camp leaders that are complaining now waste their time looking for arms to purchase to fortify their newly born camp.

“Further extension will make a mockery of the whole exercise and also belittle the brilliant flag off speech of Mr Governor, that after 21 days; anybody found with arms will be dealt with according to the law.

“The real militants have already submitted their arms and captured, those left behind are amnesty traders, those that pay N100,000 and above to camp leaders,’’ it said.

The group equally commended the Amnesty committee headed by the state Deputy Governor, Mr Agboola Ajayi, “for the diligent way it handled the programme.’’

  • FG sets aside N5bn for local miners

FG sets aside N5bn for local miners

The Federal Government has set aside N5 billion to empower artisan miners across the country as part of measures to ensure participation of all Nigerians in economic development.

The Minister of Mines and Mineral Resources, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, disclosed this on Saturday when he inspected the gold mining site at Garin Awal at Fakai Local Government Area in Kebbi State.

“We have N5 Billion in Bank of Industry for the use of small scale artisan miners, not only for self-equipping but to contribute to the economic development of Kebbi state and Nigeria, so that our economy will grow,” he said.

Fayemi explained that ISS-Hass Ltd, a Chinese mining company, has been in the community exploiting gold for more than three years, but had failed to develop the area by establishing schools, building roads, as well as providing portable water and employment for the youth, as part of an agreement entered into with the company.

He promised to investigate the allegations against the licensed operator in Garin Awal Village, Fakai Local Government of Kebbi State for alleged breach of agreement reached with the host community.

“We have seen what our artisan miners can do, which professionals in this business failed to achieve. That is from the very little efforts they are putting in place with their own efforts, digging and organising themselves.

“What we need is to enter into partnership with the state, to assist these miners, so that they could have land to operate, technical support as a way of improving their productivity and ensuring that they utilise the equipment beyond exploring mercury and finally support them through the Bank of Industry,” he said.

The minister, who expressed disappointment over the lack of commitment of licensed operators, said “ the provision of the law stipulates that licensed operators must provide community support and this must be captured in an agreement, which we call Community Development Agreement.

“The  village head has told us that all the things they promised, none of them were done. No school, they have not seen anything. They just did rudimentary road that provides access for the operators,” he said.

In his remarks, the state governor,  Abubakar Bagudu, expressed appreciation to the President Muhammadu Buhari administration for its good policies, saying they had made the state to excel in agriculture.

Bagudu said the people  o the state were ready to replicate the same achievement in the mining sector.

  • NLC condemns sack of 5000 workers in Kaduna

NLC condemns sack of 5000 workers in Kaduna

The Nigeria Labour Congress ( NLC ) has condemned the sack of 5,000 local government workers by the Kaduna State Government.

In a statement on Thursday in Abuja, President of NLC, Mr Ayuba Wabba, said the action of the state government was illegal.

According to him, the Nigeria Labour Congress strongly condemns the mass sacking of 5,000 local government workers by the Kaduna State Government.

“The purported sack violates the provisions of all labour laws, industrial relations practice as well as processes.

“The reasons adduced by the government are spurious and unfounded. Aside from this, the process is patently faulty and unlawful, and redundancy cannot be carried out without following the provisions of the Labour Act.

“When Kaduna Government announced the plan to lay off about 25,000 teachers for failing a competency test for Primary Four Class, we expressed our misgivings.

“We said that the so-called competency test was a subterfuge and part of a premeditated plan to drastically cut down the workforce.

“This is in furtherance to dangerous neo-liberal policies. The latest illegal mass sack of workers lends credence to our assertions or fears.

“We would want to warn of the consequences of the reckless actions of the government of Kaduna State and will call for caution and restraint on the part of the government,’’ he said.

The labour leader said it was evident that the state government did not give sufficient consideration to the social consequences of dropping off 5,000 workers.

He deplored reports that the governor boasted that no one or nothing could stop him from carrying out his agenda of mass retrenchment of workers.

“This is most unfortunate and a direct fulfilment of the exact opposite of his campaign promise and APC’s manifesto to create jobs.

“He often says as Governor, he has the right, power, means and will to do as he likes, but this is undemocratic and anti-workers.

“We are worried by these emotional outbursts, and their infectious effects on his peers and the polity as a whole.

“We at the Nigeria Labour Congress expected more maturity and flexibility.

“We accordingly advise the government to rescind its decision on the mass sack. We call on President Muhammadu Buhari and his party, the APC, to call the governor to order,’’ he said.

Wabba also noted that the President’s support for a reform in the education sector was not synonymous with “mindless and conscienceless retrenchment’’.

He said that some states in the federation had carried out far-reaching reforms in the education sector with impressive results without causing social violence.

He, therefore, called on the state government to heed to wise counsel given in good faith, adding that the statement should be considered as a served notice.

The congress president said that workers would use all lawful means available to contest the wave of the mass sack.

He said that NLC would mobilize workers and pensioners across the nation and its civil society allies in solidarity with workers in Kaduna

  • How sustainable is the reintroduction of history in secondary schools?

How sustainable is the reintroduction of history in secondary schools?

The most effective way to destroy people is to deny and obliterate their own understanding of their history – George Orwell

History was, to the bewilderment of many, scrapped in Nigerian secondary school curriculum back in 2009 by the federal government. What this meant at the time was that the federal government deemed it unimportant that pupils know the history of their country.

The government in its most sacred thought, said there was a dearth of teachers in the field, and that students had no interest in learning the subject.

Indeed, many believed the decision was a conspiracy in high places to keep Nigerians ignorant of their past.

“Whoever came up with that plan to scrap history in our schools didn’t just wake up to take that decision; they thought it out, knew its implication on the future generation. They wanted us done with. They hated us, even before we were born”, says Ukamaka Evelyn Olisakwe.

After almost a decade, the Muhammadu Buhari led government has revealed plans to reintroduced history back in secondary schools – this will take effect from 2018/2019 session.

Why is it being reintroduced now? Are there now sufficient man power to handle the subject? Or perhaps, students are now showing interest in the subject.

According to the minister of education, Adamu Adamu, “Somebody who doesn’t know his history is worse than dead”.

This statement by the minister is a true testament of the worth of history as seen by the government but antecedents have taught us never to take the government on their words – as the stumbling block to the reinstatement of the subject has not been dealt with.

As it stands now, the government has only announced the reintroduction of History but fail to tell the structure it wants to use to ensure that the custom of scrapping the subject does not repeat itself. How then does it hope to sustain this policy once it is implemented?

On this plate, there should be an unravelling of the structure the government has in mind to ensure this sustainability. This will enable experts to scrutinize and critically examine it to ensure its validity and rationality.

The government should also put in place innovative structures to make the subject entertaining and engaging as this will encourage pupils to always look forward to learning the subject.

Secondary schools involved should hire experienced teachers of this subject, who will tell the students how important the history of the country is to their curriculum and to them as citizens of the country.

The two main reasons why governments scrapped History are because there are not enough teachers to take the course and that students are not showing enough interest; for the former, government can partner tertiary institutions offering the course as their graduates could be given the chance to work as teachers in secondary school.

Partnering tertiary institutions that offer the course to give their graduates opportunities to work in government school can as well solve the problem of indifferent attitudes students show during history classes.

Another reason secondary school students show indifferent attitudes towards the subject is the belief that the subject is of no use to them, and that even if they went on to tertiary institutions to study history, they will become redundant.

If the government can put all these recommendations (though not exhaustive) in place, it will ensure that history is not only restored, but seen as an avenue for the preservation of our cultural heritage.
