Buhari tasks corps members on national unity

President Muhammadu Buhari has described the National Youth Service Corps ( NYSC ) as tool for national development and challenged corpers to promote national unity in their areas of primary assignments.

Buhari spoke on Friday in Daura, when he received some members of the NYSC at his residence, who paid him sallah homage.

Malam Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media, who addressed the corpers on behalf of the president, assured them of government’s commitment to the unity of the nation.

Buhari said that the NYSC scheme was the best reconciliatory scheme and would remain relevant, adding that his administration would continue to uphold the unity of the nation.

Mr Nnamdi John, who spoke on behalf of the corps members, commended the president for granting them audience.

He said that as corps members, they would continue to promote the unity of the nation through enlightenment and community development services.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the corpers were presented with 10 bags of rice, a bull and N250,000 cash for their sallah celebration.

Right from his residence to the Eid praying ground, the crowd gathered on the two sides of the street waving at the President’s convoy.

It was gathered that most of the crowd had already observed their Eid-el-Kabir prayer in another nearby praying ground.

They concluded their prayers before 9a.m and immediately headed straight to the route the President was scheduled to pass to observe his Eid prayer.

Rather than go home to enjoy their Sallah ram and food, they opted to get a glimpse of the President.

When the President got to the Eid praying ground, it was almost filled beyond capacity.

The prayer, which started around 10 a.m, was led by the Chief Imam of Daura Emirate, Mallam Muhammadu Salisu Rabe.

After the President had observed his Eid-el-Kabir prayers, the crowd on the two sides of the road leading to his residence appeared to have doubled more than when he was heading to the Eid praying ground.

While some of the crowd were waving at the convoy as the President moved back to his residence, others were struggling to capture the President and the convoy on their phones.

Speaking with journalists at his residence after the prayer, the President expressed happiness that most Nigerians came out to observe the prayer based on the reports he got across the country.

He also harped on the necessity for all Nigerians to live peacefully among themselves and to continue promoting the unity of the country.

The scenerio in Daura on Friday was not different when the President landed at the helipad in Daura on Wednesday.

Many youths in the area had rushed to the helipad to welcome the President back home.

Due to turnout of the massive crowd comprising mainly youths, the President had on Wednesday rejected his convoy stationed to convey him from the helipad to his house.

He walked from the helipad to his residence waving to the crowd and acknowledging their greetings.

  • Buhari’s Mambila power project set to take off

Buhari’s Mambila power project set to take off

Wednesday, August 30th approval by the Federal Executive Council, FEC for the award of the contract for the engineering, procurement and construction of the 3050 MW Mambila Hydro Electric Power Project reflects President Muhammadu Buhari’s strong commitment to the development of infrastructure in the country.

After more than 40 years on the drawing boards, the FEC approval for the award of the contract to a consortium of three Chinese Companies, Messrs CGCC-SINOHYDRO-CGOCC Joint Venture represents a milestone in the journey for the realisation of the country’s long-standing dream.

The landmark infrastructure project will cost the country the sum of US5,792,497,062.00 inclusive of taxes, environment utilization, works, as well as project land acquisition and compensation to about 100,000 people who will be resettled.

From 2015 when he took power from the Jonathan-led, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP administration, President Muhammadu Buhari has, in addition to the successful prosecution of the costly war against terrorism and economic sabotage, unleashed a slew of infrastructure projects that would change the face of the country. These projects include railway, roads, airports, housing and agriculture among many others.

The specific case of Mambilla presents an interesting story, given the many years it has taken to leave the drawing boards.

As far back as 1972, a preliminary study was carried out by Moto Columbus, and confirmed by an indigenous water resources consultancy, Diyam Consultant led by distinguished Nigerian engineer, the late Malam Salihi Ilyasu which recommended the construction of a hydropower project with a rated capacity of 3,960 MW.

Check Out: ‘How to move power sector forward

From then till now, various governments made efforts, or to put it in a better way, pretended to be committed to actualising the project. Nothing came out of it. Sham attempts to develop the project on Build-Operate-Transfer, BOT also failed to achieve the commencement of construction.

A government revocation of a BOT approved by a former President through an anticipatory approval led to a protracted litigation that stalled the project.

In 2011, the then administration approved the award of contract for consultancy services for the detailed design and project management and supervision of a revised power output of 2,600 Mambila Hydro Electric Power project at the sum of USD 37,220,068,72.

The major breakthrough in the execution of this project was achieved when President Muhammadu Buhari initiated discussions at the level of the President of the Peoples Republic of China in the course of his State Visit to that country.

One of the achievements of the visit was the bilateral agreement between the two governments to cooperate on the project and in particular, for the Peoples Republic of China to prioritise Chinese financing of the Mambilla Hydro-Electric Power Project using Chinese contractors.

The formation of the Joint Venture by the three companies, CGCC, SINOHYDRO and CGCOC under the guidance of the Chinese authorizes at the request of our government was significant in breaking the deadlock caused by litigation. It also ended needless competitor wrangling.

Following this development, a series of meetings took place to reduce the cost of the project from the projected USD 6.62 billion to the now agreed sUm of USD 5,729,497,062.00.

The importance of this project is being counted in its capacity to transform the communities in Taraba State and beyond that, the country as a whole.

To quote the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola speaking on the Mambila project, “it will have a transformational effect on all of Nigeria’s socio-economic development.

During its construction and upon completion, and subsequent operation, it will have considerable positive impact on electricity supply nationwide, productivity, employment, tourism, technology transfer, rural development, irrigation, agriculture and food production in the area and beyond.”

This show-piece infrastructure project by the Muhammadu Buhari administration will therefore chart a new course of prosperity in Taraba, the North-East and the entire country. It will no doubt help the country’s infrastructure. After construction, it will be the biggest single power project in the country.

Considering what this landmark infrastructure project means to the country’s economy, sociology and politics, it is hard to fathom why the past administrations delayed the Mambilla power project inordinately.

Although blame for this is shared by governments over this 40-year period, the ones to take the bigger share are the governments during which tenure the oil sector boomed with oil prices as high as US$120.

That period in question, especially the one preceding President Muhammadu Buhari’s second coming was one of missed opportunities and misplaced priorities. The long overdue investments in power and transport needed to unlock the economy were ignored. Nigeria earned unprecedented Dollar revenues.

But there is nothing to show for the revenues earned. No major capital project was completed, neither power generation, road development, rail or agriculture benefitted from the windfall earnings. Rather, the administration presided over the diversion of oil revenues on a such a massive scale.

President Muhammadu Buhari on the other hand has a positive and prosperous vision for Nigeria. A nation in which the natural talent and hard work of the people is being supported by an enabling environment of infrastructural development and policy reforms that will develop a firm future for our nation.

  • NIM to hold Management Conference in September

NIM to hold Management Conference in September

At a press brief on Wednesday, the President and Chairman of Council, Nigerian Institute of Management ( NIM ), Emeritus Prof. Munzali Jibril, FNIM, OFR, announced the institution’s 2017 annual national management conference with theme “Corporate Governance and Institutional Performance”. Also present at the press briefing were – Mr. Festus Olujimi Ogunmokun, MNIM (Director Finance, Accounts, and Investments) and Mr. Anthony Fadaka, FNIM, FCIA (Registrar) of the Institute. The conference is scheduled to hold between the 17th and 19th September, 2017 at the International Conference Centre, Abuja.

Addressing the press, Munzali stressed that the annual conference is one of the institution’s numerous contributions to nation building by providing a platform to brainstorm extensively on a burning governance and leadership issue of national important and to make sound and informed recommendations to the government and key decision makers.

According to him, “the choice of the theme of the conference was arrived at when the institute came to the sad realization that most of the sleazy and unethical practices being witnessed in the country in recent times were due to scant regard for corporate governance.

“In addition, some poorly performing and failed businesses both in the public and private sectors of the economy are caused by non-compliance with the tenets and ideals of corporate governance. Since it is a truism that there is a direct correlation between adherence to corporate governance and institutional performance, there is a new compelling need to draw the attention of the nation, businesses and those who manage man and materials at different levels to the issue of corporate governance.”

The conference which is expected to be declared open by the President, Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, would be a gathering of the highest number of professional managers, government functionaries, decision-makers, opinion leaders, policy formulators and top management executives in both the private and public sector; a total of 3,000 participants are expected for the conference.

He also emphasized the sundry roles that corporate governance play in issues bordering on accountability and transparency within the polity. According to him, “corporate governance, when executed effectively, can prevent corporate scandals, fraud and civil and criminal liability of organisations.

“It also enhances the company’s image in the public eye as a self-policing company that is responsible and worthy of shareholder and debtholder capital.

“The issue of corporate governance has been one of the reasons most organisations and government have continued to totter in these climes, hence the need to focus on it at this year’s conference with the hope of proffering solutions that will arrest the present slide.”

Among the corporate governance experts expected to present papers at the conference is Dr. Christopher Kolade (FNIM, CNIM, CON), who will be presenting on the main theme of the conference. Also, presenting at the conference would be Prof. Sheikh Ahmed Abdullah (Former Minister of Agriculture), Dr. Nat Ofo, FCIS (Sub-Dean, Department of Business Law, College of Law, Igbinedion University), Mr. Akinbayo Adenubi and Alhaji Mohammed Abubakar (Past Presidents of the Institute), Dr. Rob Newsome, Dr. Nkechi Ezeako, and Prof. Sulaiman Salihu Aruwa.

  • Insurgency: Rep Kamale’s wild and misguided utterances

Insurgency: Rep Kamale’s wild and misguided utterances

The inherent mischief in some Nigerians has no limits. Those propelled by discernible forces of evil, constantly scheme to malign leaderships at other levels. But they pitiably forget their own status as leaders in the lower rungs, who have failed to play complementary roles to assist those they seek to rubbish, even though unconvincingly.
Our current House of Representatives member, Hon. Adamu Dau Usman Kamale (PDP, Adamawa), representing Michika/Madagali Federal Constituency in Adamawa state strikes like one of such leaders with self-glorifying instincts and high capacity for mischief. Perhaps, Nigerians are reading his comments on the Boko Haram insurgency in the Northeast and specifically, in his home state of Adamawa for the first time.
But Kamale, this apparent backbencher in the Green Chambers sought visibility, not in sponsorship of any active legislation for national development, but weird comments on Boko Haram insurgency in our constituency. He fruitlessly attempted to diminish the efforts of the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) under President Muhammadu Buhari (PMB) and the Nigerian military in the counter-insurgency campaigns by quoting imagined figures of deaths and properties destroyed by Boko Haram terrorists in the two local governments he represents at the National Assembly (NASS).
Kamale was quoted as saying, “In the past few days, over 10 lives and over 200 houses have been lost again.” And referring to PMB, he said, “The security reports he gets on these two local governments are not detailed…The situation here is worse than the reports he gets from the military.” The true situation is that our representative has abandoned us.
President Buhari has consistently maintained that the life of every Nigerian is important and worth protecting anywhere he is domiciled in the country. Therefore, Rep Kamale’s concern that 10 persons have been killed in his constituency could be appreciated from this prism. But what rubbishes his misguided utterances is the glaring inaccuracy with figures and the veiled intent to glorify and overblow the atrocities of the insurgents who are products of his neglect and lack of empowerment for our youths in Adamawa State.
It is unbelievable to think or even agree that if Boko Haram terrorists have the capacity to destroy over 200 inhabited houses, the insurgents would  not have killed merely over 10 persons “in the last few days,” as claimed by this Rep.  How few are the days is another problem for Rep Kamale. It means he has lost touch with his constituency and is being breast fed with distorted information by a cortege of political hangers-on.
At least a serious minded representative of his people should have devoted time to gather time-tested and credible statistics, to enable him raise a motion in plenary on the plight of his people from renewed Boko Haram terrorists attacks.  No! it is not in the thinking of Rep Kamale. On this score too, the Rep member has failed woefully.
Nonetheless, Kamale should know that he cannot block the ears of Nigerians with his incensed hallucinations about an imagined festering of Boko Haram terrorism. To further scold the military and brand them as liars by claiming they are exaggerating or twisting the facts on the counter-insurgency campaigns smacks of self-indictment.
Falsehood cannot replace truth and factuality; no matter the extent it is embellished. One is tempted to believe even a primary school pupil in Adamawa state, one of the three states embroiled in outrageous terrorism, before President Buhari’s soothing balm, would defeat Hon. Kamale to a debate. He will tutor his Rep Kamale that if terrorists can overrun 200 houses in a “few” days, the death toll would not just be10 lives.
The kid will educate Hon. Kamale and his likes that the psychology  of terrorists is no longer a hidden secret. Boko Haram terrorists’ main targets are human beings; they cannot run or waste their arms and ammunitions on empty buildings or thatched huts. The calculation admits itself that even if terrorists killed just one person in each of the 200 houses, the number of the dead would have been at least 200 persons, as against Kamale’s 10 persons. That is the extent fabricated lies dumps someone naked in the marketplace.
But Hon. Kamale failed to reason beyond his nose. And probably pushed by the forces of a re-election ambition, he decided to foul the air with figures he imagined or cooked from the pit of hell, in the bid to create an impression of effective representation of his people. But he ended up badly as an artificial voice of the voiceless constituents in Michika and Madagali.
There is no disgrace any leader at any level should wrought upon self this consciously as done by Kamale. Imaginations have limits. When a man does not know such limits, he is doomed forever.
The Nigerian military which is battling insurgency in the country can be excused for Kamale’s shortcomings; hence he also accused them of incompetence about the anti-terrorism campaigns. It is not expected that Hon. Kamale would have approached them to verify the figures he sat in his cozy house in Abuja and guessed.
But his conjured news has refused to fly because traditionally, the military  does not conceal the figures of casualty from any incident of Boko Haram terrorists attacks. The Nigerian Military which leads the anti-terrorism campaigns is always plain, frank and honest with figures of casualties.
And even where they make mistakes by wrongly quoting casualty figures, they retract the statements with apologies to the Nigerian public and update the figures. The recent incident is the Boko Haram terrorists’ ambush of geologists, NNPC officials and Civilian JTF members on research mission in the Lake Chad area attests to it.
Therefore, if not operating from a predetermined mindset to smear the image of the Nigerian military and belittle their efforts in the counter-insurgency operations, a clear-headed Kamale would have attempted to verify the figures of the so called casualty of victims of terrorists in a “few” days from the police, civil defence, DSS or even the state government. Assuming he has dreadful enemies in all these security agencies, reaching out to the office of National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) located in Abuja, where he resides and claims representation of a constituency far removed from his psyche and binoculars would have assisted.
Certainly, this is disreputable conduct from a supposedly honourable member. But Nigerians regale in the mentality of freedom of speech and say anything that their warped minds contrive, paying little or no attention to the harm to society or the public. But a freedom of expression irresponsibly exercised as done by Hon. Kamale most times boomerangs. It stains the reputation of the person and taints his image. It exposes him to ridicule in the eyes of sane minds.
There is no verisimilitude between what Kamale has said and the reality in his constituency. He may be visiting home for the first time since 2015, after his election to NASS. But to turn the Nigerian military and the FGN to scapegoats because he is seeking for another mandate is disheartening. He is indeed aware that we are not happy with him but it is not the right strategy to placate us ahead of 2019.
Kamale should ask himself, before the Buhari Presidency, would Boko Haram raids affecting 200 houses have posted just 10 deaths? Even if one is tempted to align with his submissions and accepts it as reality; is this not an appreciable level of improvement?
Mouthing in a manner that gives Boko Haram terrorists, sponsors and agents the illusion that they are indeed waxing stronger is disservice not only to his people, but humanity in general. If Yobe and Borno States have no such gory tales from terrorism, where has Kamale invented his tales? Or is it to unmask himself to Nigerians, as a Boko Haram sympathizer and agent?
Hon. Kamale should know that the issue of security is not for the military alone; it is not for the FGN alone either. It is not the headache of the state governor solely. It is for everybody, particularly those in its furnace like him. Let Hon. Kamale unfold his scorecard on intervention measures to assist and encourage the counter-insurgency campaigns in the last two years in his state. Can he boast of any?

FG, U.S. partnering on loot repatriation, says Osinbajo

The Buhari administration has reached out to the U.S. government to increase its assistance in ensuring that corrupt officials do not get a safe haven abroad for their loot, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo said on Monday.

The Vice President, who said this during the visit of a U.S. Congressional Delegation to the Presidential Villa, said both countries were working on a prompt repatriation of the funds.

According to Prof. Osinbajo, “we have reached out to the US government with respect to helping with repatriation of proceeds of crime and proceeds of corruption.’’

Osinbajo, who was appreciative of the support given by the U.S. so far said the Buhari administration regarded “corruption is an existential threat’’ that must be dealt with at its root.

“We have worked quite closely with the U.S. government on repatriation of funds. We have seen some results,’’ he said adding that the Federal Government expected more improvement in the process.

He noted that what tended to happen with corrupt public officials was that if they were able to find a safe haven for the proceeds of their criminality they continued with the crime.

Osinbajo stated that there was the general feeling that “if I am able to get the proceeds out of the country I might just get away with it.

“This is one of the reasons we have taken several actions to ensure that we are able to deal with it.

“Because some of the major dislocations in the economy are on account of the problems that we have seen with corruption.’’

He said the Buhari presidency’s strategy which is one of “the most effective ways of fighting corruption is ensuring that these proceeds are unsafe.’’

He added that the strategy was for people to know that they would be found out and would be punished for it “and we would seize whatever profit they had gain.’’

On the return of the Chibok girls, the Vice President said, “it is a front burner issue for us all the time, there is no question of not continuing to negotiate and looking for the girls.’’

He expressed gratitude to God for the hope that the girls are still alive and would be released.

The Vice President noted that “negotiations were continuing and government would keep looking for the opportunity to bring them back.’’

The Vice President thanked the U.S. government for its recent decision to sell Super Tucano aircraft to Nigeria to aid its fight against insurgency in the North-East.

Sen. Christopher Coons, who led the delegation, said the visit was to reaffirm the relationship between Nigeria and the U.S., noting that the U.S. had “an enduring enthusiasm and partnership with Nigeria’’.

Other members of the Congressional delegation include Senators Gary Peters, Jeff Merkley, Michael Bennet, Reps Lisa Blunt Rochester, Terri Sewell, Charlie Dent, Barbara Lee and Frederica Wilson.

The delegation was accompanied by the U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Stuart Symington.

Also in attendance were the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Geoffery Onyeama, Minister of Agriculture, Chief Audu Ogbeh, the National Security Adviser, Maj. Gen. Babgana Monguno, and the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar.

Buhari expresses regrets over neglect of cocoa sector

President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed regrets over the neglect of the cocoa sector over the years, saying his administration will work to reposition it and other non-oil export commodities.

Buhari said this at the First International Cocoa Summit organised by the Federal Ministry of Trade and Investment in collaboration with Cocoa Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Abuja on Monday.

The President, represented by Chief Audu Ogbeh, the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, said that the country’s annual production of cocoa declined from 420,000 tonnes in the 60s to 192,000 tonnes in 2015.

He noted that the position of the country had dropped from being the fourth global cocoa producing country to the seventh.

Buhari said that the theme of the conference titled ‘Cocoa, a strategic Commodity for National Economic Development’, was apt as it was in line with his administration’s agenda to diversify the economy of the country.

He appealed to stakeholders to join hands with the Federal Government to improve the production, packaging and marketing of non-oil export commodities.

“This sector has suffered neglect as a result of over reliance on crude oil.

“Government is working hard to improve the business environment for local and foreign investors as well as encouraging the development of domestic consumption.

“The Federal Government is committed to restoring the agricultural and industrial sector to its prime position and I call on all stakeholders to key into the government policy of promotion of non-oil export as an alternative source of revenue.

“I wish to assure you that the implementation of our reforms of the Ease of Doing Business will be the backbone for the repositioning of the cocoa sub- sector in Nigeria,’’ he said.

In a message, Sen. Bukola Saraki, the President of the Senate, called on state governors to make land available to youth farmers to cultivate cocoa.

Saraki, represented by Sen. Yusuf Abdullahi Yusuf (Taraba Central), assured cocoa farmers that the National Assembly would consider legislation aimed at promoting cocoa production in the country.

In his words, Ogbeh said that Federal Government was planning a relaunch of cocoa production in the South-West part of the country.

The minister, who said that Ondo and Cross River States produced 60 per cent of cocoa in the country, appealed to other states to join in the production to promote non-oil export.

The Minister of Trade and Investment, Dr Okechukwu Enelamah, said the summit would enable stakeholders to brainstorm with a view to achieving economic diversification and maximum return on investments.

The President, Cocoa Association of Nigeria (CAN), Mr Sayina Riman, said that a five year strategic plan would be formulated at the end of the conference to move the sector forward.

“This sector is apt because we will arrive at a document to upscale Nigeria cocoa production.’’

Dr Jean-Marc Anga, the Executive Director, International Cocoa Organisation, said the organisation would assist the country in the implementation of its action plan on cocoa.

Anga said that research and development was a major driving force toward improving cocoa production in Nigeria.

“We will assist Nigeria to develop a plan on cocoa but emphasis should be on quality and value addition,’’ Anga said.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Federal Government at the conference declared cocoa as a national drink for citizens of the country.
