“As such, we have missed out on various opportunities to capitalise on the up-surging of commodity process.”

Goni said that the Federal Ministry of Mines and Steel Development had identified 45 different solid mineral types across the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory.

  • We must resolve North East humanitarian crises, says Osinbajo

The Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo on Monday said the country could not wait for another generation of leaders to resolve the humanitarian crises in the North East.

He said this while receiving a delegation from Borno which came to thank President Muhammadu Buhari for the recent release of 82 Chibok girls from the Boko Haram captivity.

According to him, it is this generation of leaders who must do what it takes to resolve most of the issues that face the country in the North East.

Osinbajo said that the Federal Government would re-strategise with all the agencies involved in the rehabilitation of victims of insurgency in order to address their most urgent problems.

“Perhaps it might be wise for us to take a look first about how to save the children and to save peoples’ lives and then begin to address questions of infrastructure as we go along.

“But I think it is important that people don’t die while we are thinking, people don’t die while we are planning to ensure that we are able to provide for them.

“So what I will suggest is that we take some time out to look at this, the Borno State government, the Federal Government, and then of cause the PCNI, PINE and all the other government initiatives that are working out there.

“And then plan things better, outline what is priority and then determine what it will cost us and then we can work from there.

“But I think it is important that we take a second look at what we have organized so far so that we will be able to do something more.’’

Osinbajo said that the crises in the North East had grown deeper but noted that it was gratifying that more people were freed from captivity by the armed forces and international partners.

He said the government must determine what needed to be done and do everything that it would take to hold the officials to account for the lives of the children and vulnerable people.

“That in my view is the whole point about leadership, otherwise I don’t see how we can justify our leadership in any other way,’’ he said.

The Acting President acknowledged that a lot of what happened in the release of the Chibok girls were largely because the international community and development partners believed in the integrity of Buhari.

He said the partners “recognize his genuineness, forthrightness and felt the need to help,’’ adding that they did not have to wonder if there was any other thing else going on.

“We are thankful for that kind of leadership that has showed so much integrity.’’

Osinbajo observed that so many people made sacrifices in the course of insurgency, especially in Borno, and said the disaster in the region was unimaginable.

He said the administration did not know how long it would take to restore all that were lost in physical infrastructure not to talk about the lost lives.

Osinbajo said that Buhari noted that the arrival of the 82 girls to the Villa had boosted his health.

He said Nigerians should rejoice that the release of the girls had taken place and expressed optimism that the remaining girls and others in captivity would regain their freedom.

Borno Gov. Kashim Shetima, who led the delegation, said the state was surprised in October 2016 with the release of 21 Borno daughters by the Buhari administration.

He added that the record-breaking negotiation also secured the release of another 82 female students.

Shetima said that his state was in the Villa to thank Buhari, his team, the armed forces, the Swiss government and the International Red Cross committee for the feat.

The governor whose wife, Nana, was also at the event attributed the feat to the integrity of the President.

He said the President inherited a battered economy and that with his determination the country would attain greatness again.

He thanked the parents of the girls for their patience waiting for the girls and urged parents whose girls had yet to return to remain hopeful and prayerful for God to turn the situation around.

The Chairman Governors Forum, Gov. Abdulaziz Yari of Zamfara , commended the efforts of the President and Vice President for the release of the Chibok girls.

He also thanked God for His intervention and expressed the hope that more captives would return and that insurgency in the North East would be routed out.

The former Senate Leader, Ali Ndume, noted the personal interest shown by Osinbajo in the plight of the people of the North East.

He said that the humanitarian crises in the region were beyond anyone’s imagination in spite of the efforts made by the international community.

The Senator noted that the budget of Borno could not take care of the problems, adding that the budget of N45 billion for the PCNI was grossly inadequate and urged the federal government to boost the allocation.

The Minister of Women Affairs, Aisha Alhassan said that all the released girls were in good shape and thanked the Acting President for being thorough in the identification of the girls.

She also thanked the Borno governor and the UN system for their special interest in the rehabilitation of the released school girls.

  • FG donate drugs, essential commodities for rehabilitation of freed Chibok girls

The Federal Government has donated drugs and other essential commodities to an undisclosed medical facility for the rehabilitation of the 82 rescued Chibok school girls.

The Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, presented the items to the clinic on Monday in Abuja.

Mrs Boade Akinola, the Director, Media and Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Health, said this in a statement.

According to her, the Adewole made the donation during a visit to the rescued girls at the health facility where they are currently receiving care.

“The minister has assured the recently freed 82 Chibok Girls of the determination of the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration to ensure their complete health and wellbeing.

“We are happy for you and we thank God for your release.

“President Buhari has shown his commitment to your plight and has directed that we offer best of medical services.

“We are going to take care of you so that you can go out and live productive lives again.

“It is our job to help you. Please, do not hide anything from us,’’ she quoted Adewole saying.

The minister, the statement said, assured Nigerians that every needed commodity shall be provided as soon as the laboratory results are delivered.

He called on the medical team to setup individual chart to track the progress of each of the girls.

Adewole called on the care providers to give special attention to psychosocial services bearing in mind that the girls have been held captive for almost three years.

  • Tinubu calls for special care for released Chibok schoolgirls

Tinubu calls for special care for released Chibok schoolgirls

A former Lagos State Governor, Sen. Bola Tinubu, on Monday called for special and adequate care for the released Chibok schoolgirls, to help them overcome the sad experience they had to suffer while in captivity.

Tinubu made the call in a message in Lagos to congratulate President Muhammadu Buhari and Nigerians over the release of more of the abducted Chibok schoolgirls

He urged the government to help the families of the girls to nurture them, for their proper reintegration into the society.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that 82 of the over 200 girls abducted from Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok, Borno by Boko Haram in April 2014 were released by the sect on Saturday following negotiations with the federal government.

The sect had earlier released 21 of the abducted girls in October 2016.

Tinubu said: “I congratulate President Buhari and Nigerians over the release of more of the abducted Chibok schoolgirls.

“This shows President Buhari’s unwavering commitment to freeing these and other innocent children from the cruel hand of Boko Haram and returning them to their families and community.

“Yet, we must keep this good news in proper context. The released children need to be nurtured and cared for in a special way in order to overcome the sad experience that they had to suffer.

“Moreover, we must not forget the girls still held by Boko Haram and we must not forget the grief of their families.

“We owe it to them to press forward until all the girls have regained freedom and Boko Haram is so defeated that it may never again be able to do what it did in Chibok.

“Boko Haram must be defeated. President Buhari has said as much.  We all must stand with him and support his strategy to accomplish this humane and necessary goal,” he said.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) national leader said the release of the girls showed that President Buhari had kept his eye on the true objective to reunite families and communities under the reign of peace and rule of justice.

According to him, the northern Nigeria, and Nigeria as a whole, may begin to rebuild in a way that brings a decent life and a taste of enduring prosperity to all Nigerians.

“This is the ultimate goal, and the release of these girls is an important step on this pathway.

“I congratulate the President. I congratulate our gallant armed forces.  After waiting so long for the return of their children, the parents of these girls must feel a great sense of relief and elation,” Tinubu said.

  • ‘Chibok girls release: PDP insensitive, exhibits disdain for human life’

‘Chibok girls release: PDP insensitive, exhibits disdain for human life’

The Federal Government says the incautious statement by a faction of PDP criticizing the process leading to the release of the 82 Chibok girls further exhibits the party’s disdain for human life.

In a statement issued on Monday in Abuja, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed described the statement as “indecent, inhuman and ill-timed”.

The minister, in the release signed by his Special Adviser, Mr Segun Adeyemi, said it was insensitive for any individual or organization to spoil the joy that heralded the release of the girls because of politics.

“It is clear that the kind of disdain for human life which the PDP exhibited in its incautious statement is the same reason the poor girls were kidnapped in the first instance.

“It is also this attitude the then PDP-controlled Federal Government took that seemed an eternity before even acknowledging the abduction, thus losing critical time for their rescue.

He noted that from the statement, it was clear that the PDP, whose incompetence and the cluelessness precipitated the Chibok girls crisis was not wishing and praying for it to end with the safe return of the abducted girls.

The minister recalled that President Muhammadu Buhari had stated that the defeat of Boko Haram would not be complete without the rescue of the Chibok girls.

“If that includes swapping some Boko Haram elements for the girls, so what? Will the PDP rather have the girls stay in perpetual captivity, just to prove a ludicrous point?

“Didn’t superpower United States engage in negotiations with the Taliban that led to the exchange of five Taliban fighters for US Army Sgt Bowe Bergdahl in 2014?

“Didn’t Israel release 1,027 Palestinian prisoners in exchange for one Israeli soldier, Gilad Shalit in 2011?

“A lot of factors come into play when a nation has to decide whether or not to engage in prisoner/hostage swap.

“None, however, trounces the sanctity attached to human life and the consideration for the pains of the loved ones of those involved,” he said.

The minister stressed that since the PDP failed to rescue even one of the Chibok girls, the party should hold its peace while the administration continued to seek the release of all the abducted girls, using every means at its disposal.

He reassured that the administration would continue to work assiduously to end all Boko Haram hostilities.
