Why military can’t crush sect yet, by Buhari

FORMER Head of State Gen. Muhammadu Buhari has defended the military against criticism that troops are unable to battle Boko Haram.

The military, Gen. Buhari said, is ill-equipped despite the huge amount of money being wasted on trivial issues by the government.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential aspirant spoke in Enugu  while addressing party faithful.

He said: “Soldiers have been complaining that they are ill-equipped, in spite of the trillions spent on defence budget in the last three years.

“If you consider the foreign revenue Nigeria has generated since 1999, you will be shocked at how inefficient and corrupt the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been. Soldiers have been saying they are ill equipped, yet trillions have been voted for defence in the last three years,” he said.

The former military leader was accompanied by former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, former Minister of Information Prince Tony Momoh, Mr. Audu Ogbe, among others. He noted  that next year  would be another landmark  year in the history of Nigeria.

He added: “If we don’t vote out PDP, it will vote out Nigerians and we will all be the losers. Cast your votes for us so that we can all fight this inefficiency and corruption.”

Gen. Buhari enjoined  party members to get their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), urging them to be vigilant, vote and protect their  votes and ensure they count.

Gen. Chris Eze  said if Nigerians elect Buhari, they will be sure of having a competent Commander-in- Chief once again.

Eze recalled that under Buhari as Head of State, the violent  Maitasine sect was driven away from Nigeria into Chad while his regime initiated a war against indiscipline and corruption.

    •APC’s criticism angers PDP

All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential aspirant Gen. Muhammadu Buhari yesterday knocked President Goodluck Jonathan administration for  the invasion of the APC’s data centre in Lagos.

He said the clampdown was a foretaste of things to come in next year’s general elections.

Gen. Buhari said the government had shown that it would not conduct “anything resembling free and fair elections”.

He said the desperation of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was growing by the hour.

The aspirant, who made his position known in a statement in Abuja through his aide, Sabi’u Tunde, asked the Presidency to stop “defending the indefensible”. The Directorate of State Security (DSS) said it stormed the data centre because it suspected that it was habouring illegal activities.

Gen. Buhari expressed regrets that the Federal Government was pushing the nation into chaos.

The statement said:  “Almost everyday, the Jonathan presidency seems intent on demonstrating for all to see that they have mastered the art of how to push a nation into chaos within the shortest time possible.

“The early morning attack by security operatives on the APC data centre in Lagos on Saturday November 22nd is one such display in a growing chain of abuse and violation of the constitution and political rights of the people. It is a reckless act that must be condemned in the strongest possible terms.

“The APC Data Centre housed internal party membership information and also was an important vehicle to disseminate information to APC members.

“Yet, for conducting functions necessary and proper for a political party operating within the democratic context, the Centre became a hated target of the Jonathan government and the PDP.”

He indicted the administration of being behind the attack on the APC data centre.

The statement added: “The Jonathan government cannot claim ignorance. The security operatives conducting this illegal raid must have been ordered from Abuja. They would not have done what they did unless given the mandate from their high bosses in Abuja.

“Attempting to defend the indefensible, they fabricate a story that the attack was necessary because criminal activity was taking place at the Centre. These statements are such plain lies.

“These acts are but a foretaste of things to come. From these attacks, this government is signaling to the Nigerian people they have no intention of holding anything resembling free and fair elections.

“Their goal is not to create a level electoral playing field. Their goal is to level the opposition into the dust through the abuse of federal power.”

The APC presidential aspirant accused the PDP of becoming desperate to win next year’s poll at all cost.

The statement added: “The desperation of the PDP grows by the hour. Afraid they may be swept from office by the results of a free election fairly conducted, they will go to any length to hold on to office.

“We are swiftly approaching a telling moment in our history. The crumbling PDP government is trying its utmost to stop the irresistible force of the people’s desire for progressive change that will establish peace and security as well as bring widely-shared prosperity for all.

“The PDP knows the APC is the vehicle to bring this change; thus the PDP is doing all it can to damage that vehicle.  The APC is an idea whose time has come because we are committed to govern Nigeria as if it were a great nation and not to destroy it as if it were a conquered country.”

Gen. Buhari said the APC would not accept anything other than free and fair elections in 2015.

The statement said: “Nigerians are watching. The APC, for one, will seek free and fair elections. Nothing more, nothing less. The APC will also abide by the results of such elections. However, we will not stand idly and watch this government dismantle even the small, incomplete fragments of democracy this nation has struggled so hard and long to build.

“To allow this demolition will be more than a tragedy for the APC. It will separate the nation from its future greatness.

“We shall use all legal and constitutional means – from the courts, to the press, to protests – to alert the people and world to the shadow this government seeks to cast over the nation, and we shall use these same means to disperse that shadow so that free and fair elections can be had.”

    •APC presidential aspirant submits form

Former Head of State and All progressives Congress (APC) presidential aspirant General Muhammadu Buhari spoke yesterday about last week’s scene at the National Assembly.

He said preventing some members of the House of Representatives from entering the chamber was “a rape of the constitution”.

He said it was unfortunate that total insecurity has been allowed to prevail in the country.

The General, who spoke with reporters after submitting his nomination form to APC National Chairman Chief John Odigie Oyegun, said: “It is a distressing situation where those who are supposed to protect the constitution are those who are undermining it. The House of Representatives and the Senate are sacred places.

“The law enforcement agencies shouldn’t go there, fire tear gas and harass them. As far as I am concerned, they are undermining the constitution. If they are undermining the constitution, who is going to correct things when they go bad? My position is that total insecurity in Nigeria is on the march. May God help us.”

He told the party leaders that having collected the form and complied with the party’s demands, he was returning it in the hope that this will lead him to becoming the president in 2015.

He said: “We have collected the form according to the due process we are pursuing. We have dutifully gone through the processes and have filled the form and attached the documents and the receipts of the demand we have to subject ourselves to if we want to be part of the exercise.

“I believe that the forms have been surly filled. I thought that my form should not be submitted on the last day of submission, but to be among the first three. But I was told that it has to be submitted today.”

Speaking after receiving the form, the APC chairman said that the submission was a sign that Gen. Buhari is serious about the race. “If you pick a form and you don’t return it, we are not sure yet whether you mean business,” he said, adding:

“But I am glad that the form is here and you are one of the aspirants that has confirmed his continuation in the presidential race. So, I greet you and wish you the very best.

“I loved what you said when you came in that there were so many people that you could hardly find a place to park your car. That is the sign of a vibrant party, a party that is growing and I want to assure you that half the crowd you saw are PDP members seeking registration to join us and seeking waiver to pick our ticket for the various offices to be contested.

“So, we are busy working and preparing the ground for our eventual takeover.  I thank you for your forthrightness, simplicity and, by God’s grace, one of you in the APC will be the president of this nation in the next few months.”

Odigie-Oyegun expressed sadness about what he described as difficult and challenging times for the nation, but was quick to add that “this is a time when the good Lord is beginning to reveal all the evil that has been going on in this nation and that is still being planned in this nation.

“In the last few days alone, reports in the international and local media have it that a close aide of of President Idris Debby of Chad who has a document with him that allows him access into any facility without any special permission, was arrested with rockets meant to be supplied to Boko Haram.

“This is the same government and nation that we are relying on to broker a deal between us and Boko Haram. This is the same country and the same President that our President visited with fanfare in company of a man internationally and nationwide known as the sponsor of Boko Haram.

“I leave it to the imagination of the Nigerian public to see the kind of vicious circle that we are being plunged into. To see the kind of clique that are creating the kind of blood that is being spilled in the North eastern part of this country.

“The kind of person behind the deaths that we are experiencing everyday. Just two days ago, about 50 persons lost their lives again. The kind of conspiracy that is responsible for the abduction of our mothers, daughters and sisters and the slaughter in a very dastardly way, of students in our secondary schools.

“The point I am trying to make is that God is taking a hand in ensuring that there is peace in this nation by ensuring the gradual revelation and unravailing of all those forces that are responsible for the travails this nation has been going through in the last few months.

“We are glad that you are one of those Nigerians who have offered themselves on the platform of the APC with the vision and passion for change and the time has come when business has to be transacted differently in this country. Genuine concern for the people of this nation should become the number one priority of any government in this nation”.

Buhari begins fund raising for election

A former Head of State and presidential aspirant in the All Progressives Congress (APC), Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, has begun an initiative to raise campaign funds from his supporters nationwide.

Under the initiative, Nigerians are expected to contribute a minimum of N100 to the campaign fund in a similar manner American President, Barak Obama, raised campaign funds for his election.

The initiative is expected to raise about N7 billion from about 70 million supporters.

Addressing his supporters under the auspices of the Buhari Support Organisation (BSO) in Abuja, the former Nigerian leader said he decided to buy into the initiative because of the in-built mechanism for ensuring accountability and transparency in its operations.

He said: “What makes it worthy of praise is the fact that the initiative comes with its in-built mechanism for ensuring acceptability that is also transparency-friendly. If we preach accountability, we should be able to practise it. What we are about to do in the next few months is the culmination  of painstaking effort, dedication and unquenchable zeal to make a difference to the future that lies before us.”

Expressing happiness about the support being extended to him by the youth, Buhari said what the groups had done was to rally support for a common purpose, to salvage the nation.

He recalled that a similar initiative was used by President Obama, who rallied the support of the people to provide funds that enabled him to prosecute his campaign.

OYo State residents have shown increasing support for All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential aspirant, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, the Oyo State Coordinator of the Buhari 2015 Support Group Centre (BSGC), Deacon Abimbola Oyemakinde has said.

The cleric said the Oke-Bola, Ibadan office of the centre had been a beehive of activities with scores of people across party lines declaring their support for the former Head of State to realise his aspiration in next year’s election.

The coordinator said many people had been expressing the willingness to work for Gen. Buhari’s success at the polls, being the nation’s epitome of anti-corruption fighter.

Oyemakinde explained that scores of people had been urging APC to ensure that Gen. Buhari gets its ticket for success in the 2015 election.

The coordinator said this would enable the supporters to vote en masse for Gen. Buhari in the 2015 elections.

He said he had taken the message on Gen. Buhari to the 33 local governments, adding that he introduced the aspirant’s message to the local government chairmen during his tour of the state.

Oyemakinde stressed that the goodwill Gen. Buhari had built among Nigerians as an upright leader was attracting many people to support his aspiration.

He said the former Head of State was the major aspirant with the pedigree to take the nation out of the corruption bad leaders had plunged it into.

    •El-Rufai: I won’t demolish houses, if elected

Former Head of State and All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential aspirant Gen. Muhammadu Buhari yesterday told Nigerians to collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVC), describing it as their “gun to sack incompetent leaders in 2015”.

Gen. Buhari spoke in Kaduna at a rally, where former Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nasir el-Rufai formally declared his interest in the governorship seat.

He said: “Your card is your gun against incompetence in government and deception. We have suffered enough. You know what it takes to repair Nigeria, especially as regards infrastructure, security and employment. Let us get the infrastructure working; let’s get security materially, physically and morally.”

On el-Rufai, Gen. Buhari said Kaduna people would be doing themselves a great favour, if they elect the former minister as their governor.

He said: “I developed cold feet to come and present el-Rufai to you because of the sacrifices he wanted to make on my behalf, which I turned down. He insisted that I must contest and I told him that if I must contest he must also contest, because I believe he has the qualities required to make Kaduna State great again. These qualities are competence, integrity and courage.

“I have seen the way el-Rufai handled Abuja and we know he loves this country. He is endowed with the three qualities I have mentioned, so I assure you that if you vote for el-Rufai, you won’t be doing him a favour, but would be doing yourselves a favour. I am not being arrogant; I am just being honest.

“El-Rufai is the kind of person that will respect you if you respect yourself, and if you don’t respect yourself, he will help you go down the drain. I am here to ask for your support and understanding for el-Rufai and myself.”

El-Rufai promised not to demolish houses, if elected governor.

He said: “For those worrying about the demolitions that took place in Abuja, I assure you that Kaduna and Abuja are different in history, growth and priorities. We did what needed to be done in Abuja to make it a true national capital. In contrast, what Kaduna needs are better schools, health facilities and productive farms in an atmosphere of improved peace and security. That will be the focus of the APC, not the scaremongering of impending demolitions.

“We shall foster an environment of security of life and property by tackling the roots of intolerance and communal violence. We shall make a priority of transparent governance and improved service delivery by re-energising and empowering the public service. We shall rebuild and expand water supply, rural electrification and roads.

“Our government will invest in our people by improving capacity and delivery in health, education and social welfare. We shall energetically promote agriculture and food security, while implementing land reform as a basis for wealth creation and capital formation.

“The APC Kaduna Team will implement reforms that will create a transparent and responsible local government system that is properly funded, autonomous and technically-strengthened to be responsive and capable of delivering services at the grassroots. We are poised to take advantage of our state’s proximity to Abuja by developing new towns in locations neighbouring the FCT.

“We are at a crossroads of risks and opportunities in our nation and our state. The choice we make in 2015 will determine whether our nation succeeds or fails. We believe we can make Kaduna great again. I ask for your support so that we can make it happen together.”

  • Anxiety in Jonathan’s camp over Buhari

Anxiety in Jonathan’s camp over Buhari

There appears to be palpable anxiety among the aides and political associates of President Goodluck Jonathan over the presidential ambition of former military Head of State, General Muhammadu Buhari.

The Presidency is particularly rattled by the seeming growing popularity of the retired General’s interest in the presidency and is already pulling all strings to scuttle or throw spanners into the works of the Buhari political machinery.

The Presidency is also jittery with the acceptability currently being enjoyed by Buhari among prominent northern groups and caucuses as well as the way Buhari’s men have been romancing with perceived opponents of the President especially within the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

A member of the PDP Board of Trustees from Lagos State told The Nation last Thursday, “Some prominent northern leaders, politicians and public office holders are now exhibiting different postures in their backing of the presidential aspiration of President Goodluck Jonathan in the region.

“Intelligence reports also suggest that some traditional rulers may have developed cold feet over their earlier promise of support for the president concerning his re-election bid. This is just as many critics of the President are finding it easy to relate with General Buhari.

“The presidency is genuinely worried and we are worried as party men and women within PDP. The essence of politics is to control power. It appears we need to do something about the rising acceptability of the APC chieftain especially in the northern regions.”

The BoT member added, “This is not to say Buhari is capable of defeating Jonathan in 2015; far from it. But in politics, you take care of every little detail. That is what we are talking about here.”

The Nation also learnt that following recent statements by some northern groups to the effect that they are favourably disposed towards Buhari’s aspiration, the Presidency has given handlers of Jonathan’s re-election project in the north marching orders to either get such organisations to either refute the statements or factionalise them.

“The organisations that drew the wrath of the presidency over such statement include the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), Northern Union (NU), Middle Belt Assembly (MBA) and the Northern Elders Forum (NEF) amongst others.

“As we speak, the leadership of both NU and NBA have been polarised while the ACF is battling to hold itself together. The NEF is also broken into two with a faction known as the Northern Elders Council (NEC) under the leadership of elder-statesman Tanko Yakassai and some notable northern political heavyweights, now drumming support for President Jonathan’s re-election.

But all the organisations are united in their insistence that the presidency must return to the north in 2015.”

Although the PDP leadership is aware that the return of power to the north has been the position of the region since 2011, there is this thinking that the declaration of General Buhari that he would be seeking the presidential ticket of the opposition APC has reinvigorated the clamour.

“Before now, the agitation died down following realisation that it would be difficult for a northerner to beat Jonathan to the PDP ticket and the absence of a formidable opposition. But with the emergence of APC and Buhari looking good to be its candidate, there is worry in PDP,” a Kaduna based human rights activist said.

According to him, this explains why the presidency has been reaching out to prominent stakeholders in the north to woo them back into supporting Jonathan’s ambition.

“Just recently, some leading traditional rulers were invited to Abuja to see the President under the guise of discussing security situation. But on their return, we heard from some of them that the major issue discussed at the parley had to do with how Jonathan will be re-elected in 2015.

“They were promised a lot of things ranging from promotions, cars and new palaces if they rally their people to support the re-election bid of the president. Religious leaders and other opinion leaders were also invited to meet with the President,” our source said.

A number of reasons that include the mood of the people of the region, the dwindling fortunes of the PDP in many states of the region and general dissatisfaction with the handling of the Boko Haram insurgency, among others, have made many prominent northerners to jettison their support for Jonathan’s re-election.

The people feel the Jonathan government has some unfulfilled promises to the masses. Many feel he has not handled the Boko Haram insurgency well. They feel as a retired General, Buhari would perform better in dealing with the insurgents if elected.

“Aside that, the loss of states like Kano, Zamfara, Yobe, Borno and Kwara to the opposition has emboldened the people to throw their support for Buhari and his party. The general performance of the PDP government in delivering dividends of democracy to the people is also an issue,” a source said.

  • Kwankwaso to give security priority

    Kwankwaso to give security priority

Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso yesterday joined the race for the presidential ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC), with a pledge to protect lives and property, if elected.

Addressing a big crowd at the Old Parade Ground in Abuja, Kwankwaso promised to give security top priority.

He said bad governance was responsible for the country’s in security, promising to rescue Nigeria “from the clutches of incompetence and destruction and restore peace and progress”.

A major highlight of the rally was the presence of Gen. Muhammadu Buhari’s and Alhaji Atiku Abubakar’s supporters. There were also governors, ex-governors and  lawmakers.

Kwankwaso accused the President Goodluck Jonathan administration of using religious, ethnic, sectional and other primordial sentiments to promote corruption and divide the country to remain in power.

He said Nigerians must unite to fight corruption, impunity and division.

Acknowledging the task ahead, Kwankwaso said: “I have no illusion about the enormity of the challenges. But, to save our country, we must walk the journey, however difficult, and we must confront and defeat all the challenges, however monstrous.

“The first priority of this country at the moment is restoring peace and security in every corner of the land. Life and property must be protected. Boko Haram and all forms of insurgency must be defeated. As a government, we cannot afford to live in denial. Insecurity is escalating at an alarming rate. Little wonder rag-tag insurgents are taking over cities and towns in the Northeast.

“My experiences as Nigeria’s Defence minister and as special adviser on war-torn Darfur and Somalia have shown me that securing a nation and defeating armed insurgents are only achievable, if the forces are professionally mobilised, properly kitted and equipped, highly spirited and correctly armed with intelligence and munitions.

“My experiences have shown me that technology must be deployed in addition to mobilising and cultivating the support of local communities. Cross-border intelligence is a veritable ingredient necessary to defeat armed insurgents.

“Relegating the welfare of the Armed Forces and the Nigerian Police Force to the background only helps in compounding the phenomenon. And where low morals meet poor equipment and kits, no doubt the insurgents will have an edge. Any responsible government must take these issues seriously, if the protection of the life and property of its citizens is its primary responsibility. These, we understand very well. We must work together, compatriots, in a new APC government to achieve this.

“Our journey to economic prosperity will always be imperiled if the movement of persons and goods cannot be guaranteed. Stopping these menaces does not require rocket science. Good surveillance equipment deployed appropriately and manned by well-groomed and well -motivated enforcement agents will do the magic.

“The second priority of this country is killing the cancer of corruption that has eaten so deeply into the very fabric of our value system. The impunity with which corruption is being perpetrated, promoted and protected by the present PDP administration leaves no patriotic Nigerian in doubt that the government is working deliberately and with determination to impoverish Nigerians.

“Effective fight against corruption requires strong institutions, the political will of the leadership, as well as the cooperation of citizens. This, we are determined to do. Our antecedent testifies that we have the capacity and political will to do so.

“Nations do not build sound economies on insecurity, brigandage and mayhem. Nations do not build responsive economies on a foundation of scandalous corruption and impunity. Nations do not build strong economies on lies and half-truths.

“All sorts of colourful, yet deceptive, statistics are being churned out by the PDP administration to give Nigeria’s economy a clean bill of health. They are all conjectures. The reality on the ground is at sharp contrast with the cooked up statistics.”

Kwankwaso condemned the fiscal policy of the Jonathan administration as “more than disastrous”. Its micro and macro-economic policies are as vacuous as they are deceptive. How can we attain development when only a tiny percentage of our budget is allocated for capital projects and even that is not properly implemented?

“How can we grow when the wealth of the nation is being stolen by the very trustees to the wealth? Where on this planet do we have a nation so endowed and yet so impoverished? That is why we must rally round and replace this PDP government with a progressive and responsive APC administration under my stewardship.

“The strength of any economy depends on the quality, competence, fitness and morale of the available human resources that drive it. Nigeria’s education and health sectors are facing multi-throng crises of quality, quantity, infrastructure, equipment and brain drain.

“At the heart of these crises are policy and sincerity. We must remake our national education and health policies to provide sustainable lifeline of funding for these very critical sectors of our national life. Toying with the education of our children and youth is akin to passing a death sentence on an entire generation. A generation killed, a future mortgaged, and a country destroyed. That is the result of playing insincere politics with education. We cannot afford to sacrifice the future of Nigeria.

“Once upon a time, Nigeria stood out as the doyen of Africa’s diplomacy, and credible global ambassador of peace and stability as reflected in our leadership of peace keeping operations around the globe. Our neighbours, in particular, then looked to us for leadership and support at critical times for their existence.

“Today, the reverse is the case. We are sadly on our knees looking for aid and cooperation from our neighbours and the international community to preserve our territorial integrity and wellbeing.

The aspirant spoke on foreign policy, promising an overhaul.

He said: “An APC administration under my stewardship will, as a matter of priority, overhaul our foreign policy initiative and harvest the dividends of our interventions in the economy, security and other critical areas highlighted in this address, to revamp the image of Nigeria and place our country in its right position as the giant of Africa and a key global player in international relations.

“The success of this journey and clarion call by patriotic Nigerians from across the country motivated me to seek the APC’s nomination as its presidential flag bearer for the February, 2015, general elections.

“I am offering myself and soliciting the support of all patriotic Nigerians on this difficult journey,” Kwankwaso said.

Some dignitaries present include Senator Bukar Abba Ibrahim, Senator George Akume, Alhaji Abubakar Baraje, Senator Kabir Ibrahim Gaya, Governor Rotimi Amaechi, Governor Raji Fashola, Chief Audu Ogbe, Senator  Chris Ngige, former Ekiti state governor, Kayode Fayemi, deputy governors of Edo, Yobe and Borno states.

The Kwara and Nasarawa state governors were represented by their commissioners. Others present include former member of the House of Representatives, Dino Melaye, former Kogi State Governor Abubakar Audu, Some Members of the House of Representatives and members of the Kano state House of Assembly.

The National Secretary of the party Alhaji Mai Mala Buni led some officials of the party to the event.

  • Buhari misunderstood on Muslim/Muslim ticket

SIR: My advice to former head of state and presidential aspirant of the All Progressive Congress, General Muhammadu Buhari is to talk less or rather watch his statement as 2015 elections approach. This is because there is every tendency, for his statements to be quoted out of context to further dent his image by his detractors. The statement credited to him by some national dailies that he is not against Muslim/Muslim ticket was reported correctly by some while some made a mountain out of a mole-hill as should be expected. The statement was basically his personal opinion. However, some dailies have deliberately made the position that of the APC. This is why Buhari and APC leadership need caution.

The reaction of former president, Olusegun Obasanjo followed the above thought. Whereas, what the General was saying from the report I read is that if we are to grow as a nation, our preference for a leader should be based on competency and not religion or ethnicity. He mentioned the case of Late MKO Abiola and Alhaji Babagana Kingibe, which was a Muslim/Muslim ticket to buttress his point that in spite of the Muslim/Muslim ticket presented by the defunct SDP in June 12, 1993 presidential election, Nigeria still voted overwhelmingly for the ticket.

Buhari was correct on the above; however, the fact is that, Nigeria was not as polarized along ethno-religious line then as we have today. In my opinion, Buhari has become the main issue in Nigerian politics today. Consequently, some will like him, while some will loathe him. This should be expected, but he is advised to be mindful of his statement that could be deliberately misquoted and used against him.

The concern of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo was patriotic and genuine and APC leadership should not only listen to it, but take it serious and never toy with the idea of Muslim/Muslim ticket. This country has been polarised into hostile religious camps, and as a matter of fact, she is sitting on a keg of gunpowder religion-wise. Some of us who read reactions of Nigerians, particularly South-south, South-east against northerners and Muslims generally realized the evil that those who polarised the nation along religions line for their selfish end have done this nation.

As a philosopher had correctly pointed out, one thing that the greatest army in the world can never defeat is the idea whose time has come. That idea in Nigeria today is the APC. The party should therefore tread softly and follow the rule in choosing its presidential flag bearer and the vice presidential flag bearer along Nigeria’s religious dichotomy and should not toy with an idea that could ignite the fire that may consume the nation.

  • “Buhari’s choice as APC candidate ’ll unsettle PDP’

“Buhari’s choice as APC candidate ’ll unsettle PDP’

A GROUP, the Grassroots Mobilisation for Muhammadu Buhari (GMMB), has argued that the choice of former Head of State, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, as the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) would unsettle the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in next year’s general elections.

Its National Chairman, Mr. Remi Oyebanji, who made this known in a statement yesterday in Ibadan, said the popularity of Buhari was high given the votes he garnered at the 2011 elections, although the party on which he contested was barely four months old.

“The ruling party has exhausted its arsenal of character assassination, mudslinging, labelling and name calling on Gen Buhari. Instead, all these pronouncements on Buhari have become an albatross and bounced back on the sitting President and the PDP. Nigerians know better today”, the group said.

Oyebanji added that any mistake on the part of APC to present a wrong candidate would allegedly condemn Nigerians to another four years of suffering under PDP.

He advised APC leaders and delegates against the wrong choice of a presidential candidate, which he said would give the PDP an undue advantage and affect the future of Nigerians.
