  • Be careful, I don’t want you mobbed over TraderMoni, Buhari warns Osinbajo

President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed fears for the safety of his Vice, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo.

Buhari warned Osinbajo on the needs to be careful for his safety in the way he implement the TraderMoni, one of his administration Social Intervention Programmes (SIP).

The trader money programme is being implemented under the Vice President‘s office.

The President said he does not want Osinbajo to be mobbed in the process of giving out money to the traders.

Only last week the Vice President unveiled the second phase of TraderMoni and MarketMoni in Awka and Onitsha in Anambra State.

Beneficiaries receive funds ranging from N10, 000 for the TraderMoni and N50, 000 for the MarketMoni from the Bank of Industry (BoI) implementing the fund.

Buhari spoke Monday night when he hosted Osinbajo, members of the Federal Executive Council, Security Chiefs and Chief Executives of Federal Government Agencies to a breaking of fast at the Presidential Villa.

He warned Osinbajo to be careful with the way he moves from one market to the other.

“This `market money’ I warned the Vice-President I don’t like him to be mobbed, especially the way I see hefty women coming and confronting him, he should be very careful.

“These are very good initiatives. Initially, I was quite reluctant but I must admit that they are very good programmes and they endear this government to a lot of poor people because of these N5,000 or N10,000 being given to them as loans.

“They are fantastic programmes and I have to admit quite honestly that the vice president was ahead of me by insisting on them.

“But he knows me if he insists I will say `okay go and do what you like.’ He did it and I’m very pleased as he is being very successful,” he said.

Buhari also frowned at the inability of the elites to address the welfare and educational needs of the less-privileged in the country.

“When I drive around the country what upset me very much is the status of our poor people in this country. You see young people, the so-called Almajiris with tore dresses, with plastic bowl. They are looking basically for what to eat.

“The question of education (to them) is a luxury. I think Nigerian elite we are all failing because I think we should have a programme that will at least guarantee some basic education for our people no matter how poor they are.

“So, I welcome the Vice-President initiate of the School feeding programme.

‘’If you check in your localities the enrolment into schools improved because a lot of children can get at least one good meal a day. This is the position of this country.

“But, culturally some of us are quiet merciless, we don’t care about what happen to others we just keep on moving forward,” he said.

Speaking on behalf of the cabinet members, Osinbajo thanked the President for inviting Muslims and Christians to the breaking of fast with him.

“Mr. President I must say that there are some reasons I had always look forward to the Ramadan session. But some of those reasons are now being seriously challenged.

“The first of those reasons is that during the Ramadan meetings are usually very short. But, unfortunately last Wednesday Mr. President seemed to have destroyed that very good notion by taking us through the longest FEC meeting in the history of the Federal Executive Council.

“So, we shouldn’t expect anymore that meeting will necessary be short during the Ramadan.

“The second is that some of my friends are far less troublesome during the Ramadan. People like Lai Mohammed, Abba Kyari, Adamu Adamu, they are usually very well behaved during the Ramadan. But I’m not even sure that that is true anymore.

“So, I think that all we can truly expect now from the session is possibility what it was meant to do which is to remind us of some of our responsibilities to ourselves as brothers and to our fellow men/women especially our roles as leaders.

“I think is auspicious that this particular Ramadan falls at the eve of the new term in office.

“So, it is an opportunity for us to remind ourselves over the core mandates which is the welfare and security of majority of our people,” he said.

  • Obiano lauds Buhari over Emefiele’s reappointment as CBN governor

Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State has commended President Muhammadu Buhari for the reappointment of Mr. Godwin Emefiele as the Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

The governor who spoke through his Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Mr. C. Don Adinuba, said both the government and people of the state were delighted at the reappointment.

He said, “We are happy because it is based purely on merit and an appreciation of the values of policy consistency, national interest, financial system stability and a strong desire for rapid national economic growth.

“One thing which Mr Emefiele’s reappointment signifies is that President Buhari has started in earnest the implementation of the new policy of inclusiveness which he assured the Nigerian people after his reelection last February and an issue which he and I have been discussing in private.

“Though Mr. Emefiele was appointed the CBN Governor five years ago by erstwhile President Goodluck Jonathan, President Buhari saw the need for him to continue in office in the overriding interest of the nation.

“The president deserves commendation for standing firm on his decision on Emefiele’s reappointment, unlike a former President who was enamoured of Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo’s brilliance, foresight, energy, patriotism and accomplishments as the CBN Governor, but at the end of the day succumbed to pressures from those who didn’t want Prof. Soludo back for parochial reasons.

Describing Emefiele’s policies as courageous, sound and in the interest of the Nigerian people, the governor maintained that the appointment was pathway to national greatness.

He said: “Rather than pander to dictates of those who prescribe unrestrained market forces in economic policy to developing nations, Emefiele placed on a foreign exchange embargo on 43 items which are not critically needed here or can be provided in Nigeria.

“The embargo helped to shore up the naira against international currencies when it was under severe pressure following the crash of crude oil prices and a drastic reduction in the volume of crude oil exported from our country.

“It also helped the Government and people of Anambra State in the rice production drive, as the embargo made smuggled foreign rice more expensive and less effective to compete with the famous Anambra Rice which has been growing in leaps and bounds.

According to Obiano, the nation should expect more balanced appointments from Buhari in his second term.

“Massive economic progress can come about only when we choose the best candidates for key public offices, regardless of their ethnicity or the faith they profess.”

  • I am upset with the level of poverty in Nigeria – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has said he is upset with the level of poverty in Nigeria.

The president made his feelings known when he hosted Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, Ministers, Service Chiefs, Heads of Security Agencies and Chief Executives of Federal Government Agencies and Institutions to a breaking of fast at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He also frowned at the inability of the Nigerian elites to address the welfare and educational needs of the less-privileged members of the society.

He challenged the elite to do something very urgent to ameliorate the pathetic situation.

He stated that already Federal Government had introduced people friendly programmes like the School Feeding and `Trader Money’ to alleviate the hardship being experienced by the less-privileged individuals across the country.

He, therefore, commended the Vice-President for successfully managing the school feeding and `trader money’ programmes.

Vice-President Osinbajo, who spoke on behalf of the members of the cabinet, thanked the president for inviting them, both Muslims and Christians, to the breaking of fast with him.

He said that regardless of ethnic and religion affiliations Nigerians must continue to be their brothers’ keepers and must work towards building a united nation.

He, however, condemned some politicians, who were bent on dividing the people along ethno-religious lines.

On the Ramadan period, Osinbajo said: “Mr President I must say that there are some reasons I had always look forward to the Ramadan session. But some of those reasons are now being seriously challenged.

  • Ngige: NLC protest attack on defenceless workers

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on Monday led Nigerian workers to the streets of Abuja to protest what it described as “unwarranted attacked” on workers who were on a peaceful protest at the Asokoro residence of the Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige over the delayed in inaugurating the board of Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) on Wednesday.

Speaking at the rally, President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, asked President Muhammadu Buhari to conduct a psychiatric test before appointing anyone to serve as a cabinet member.

Ogunyemi said the call to conduct such test became necessary due the ongoing fracas between workers and the minister in-charge of labour and Employment who ordinary should understand the working of labour.

“ASUU as a union condemned this attack on workers by a man who should protect and defense them. To say the least, we lost confidence on such. We are also calling on President Muhammadu Buhari to conduct a psychiatric test on each of his cabinet members to ascertain their mental stability; this according to him would save the country an embarrassment as this”.

President of the NLC, Comrade Ayuba Wabba who led  the protest  said they were not protesting against the NSITF board, but the attacked on workers by thugs suspected to have been hired by the Minister.

The Central Working Committee of the NLC had ordered the one day national protest at end of its emergency meeting last Thursday, while insisting that the Minister was not worthy to continue in office as their Minister.

Wabba said the attacked on workers was undemocratic especially on the part of a minister who ought to superintend over the labour sector as the chief arbiter of the federation, but regretted that it was the same minister who hired thugs against the defenseless workers.

Wabba who is also president of International Trade Unions Confederation (ITUC) global said a directive has issued to all 162 members countries to picket Ngige anywhere around the world.

“We are here today to register our displeasure with the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige for hiring suspected thugs to attack us on Wednesday during a peaceful protest/picketing at his residence.

“The minister attitude was against international best practices as well as the ILO conventions and even Nigeria Constitution that guaranteed the right of workers to protest and picking. Instead of Mr. Ngige to dialogue with us, he resorted to hiring thugs to attack us.

“We are not here today because of the NSITF board has been inaugurated. But our concerned right now is the attack on our members. We are saying that Ngige is not fit for a public office and president Buhari should do the needful before such a man destroy his government”.

Also Speaking at the rally which took place at the ministry of Labour while the NSITF board was being inaugurated at the Presidential villa, Pesident of Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) Comrade Marwan Mustapha Adamu called for an urgent investigation with a view of bringing to book the hired thugs who attacked and caused various degrees of injuries on workers.

Comrade Marwan said the national protest/picketing was to show to Nigerians and the world that Labour will always stand for her right, adding that organised has resolved to embarrass the minister anytime he is seen both within and outside the country.

The workers carried placards some of which reads Ngige must go, He is not qualify to be a doctor but a native doctor, Ngige is a face of violence cabal in Buhari Government, How long can a public officer go before he is sack, Sack Blood thirsty Ngige now and a host of others.

  • That Nigeria may not go burst before our very eyes

The 2019 general elections over with the candidate I support, sitting President Muhammadu Buhari, returned to office with a whooping over 3M plurality of votes over his main opponent, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, of the Peoples’ Democratic Party, I think the time has come for me, and all who love this country to talk truth, not just to power, but to ourselves. I say this because of the dire, and extremely precarious, circumstances Nigeria now finds itself, only marginally better than  Somali,Sudan and  Syria at the apogee of its recent mass murders, especially after Russia escalated the all time butchery to a World War 11 killing equivalent .

While in Syria the casus belli was regime preservation, ours – banditry, kidnapping and  terrorism as in Boko Haram, are  largely the consequences of a century old feudalism in Northern Nigeria. And it is not as if the Northern aristocracy was not warned because Awo did, severally, and repeatedly, pointing out  the disadvantages of mass illiteracy, and without a doubt, his free and compulsory education, introduced in the West in 1955, ought to have served as enough leitmotif for the then entire three regions. It must today be haunting that leadership that when Ahmadu Bello encouraged education in the Southern fringes of the North, especially in today’s Kwara and parts of Kogi- areas where professors are now literally three for a penny, in the core North going to school was  seen as reducing the rankadede battalon made up of the poor and their children.

With the present revolt of the Almajiri, the chicken have come home to roost.

It may be apposite at this stage to mention that in the admission exercises to both the University Colleges of Jos and Ilorin, both of which I had first hand experiences of, to complete the portion allocated to catchment areas(North) we had to admit, start from below, that is, from the lowest per cent marks. This is why I was not surprised to  hear that in this year’s admission into the country’s Unity Schools, cut off points were as follows, courtesy a  trending Whatsapp chat.

    Anambra : 139, Rivers: 130

    Katsina :14, Lagos:150

    Kwara:144, Kano :18

Forget, meanwhile, that appointments or recruitments into federal government jobs and agencies, respectively, are the exact opposite of the above with North always having the lion share of everything, the down side really is that in any Northern village, town or city today, there are hundreds, if not thousands of  literal lay abouts, almajiris,  in particular, not only waiting but,  actually, praying to be recruited into any of these murderous gangs presently  tormenting the country but especially the North where, as you read this, nine year old  kids are  being wired with bombs to go and effect maximum killings.

Equally as you read this, one or two conferences are ongoing hearing how  many police, /army or air force emergency teams are  being set up to confront the bandits. But truth be told, how many of these  helpless people will you kill and how effective  would that method be, in reality, when for every one bandit or Boko Haram killed, twenty are waiting, pleading to be recruited to be able to feed, at all?

This  means that the challenges are rather intractable and it is exactly why leaders and the security forces must now  think out of the box and come up with fresh paradigms to confront a problem that has metastasized  to an extent that you cannot now say any part of Nigeria is safe.

For instance, we have now  learnt that the miners banned from Zamfara had relocated to Osun state in search of gold;  most parts of Yoruba land, as we would show below,  have been infiltrated by filthy looking Fulani herdsmen who translate into kidnappers once they have sold off their herds, communicating, with top grade handsets with their  well heeled controllers located outside the region.

In resolving this horrendous menace which is fast spreading to Yoruba land, and instead of  attending to  which the El Rufais of Arewa land, are Afghanising, looking for godfathers in faraway  Yoruba land, it is with all emphasis at my disposal, that I endorse the following steps, recently suggested as solutions. As encapsulated in a statement signed on behalf of the Yoruba Koya Leadership and Training Foundation by the duo of the group’s Convener, Otunba Deji Osibogun and a Trustee, Senator Tokunbo Ogunbanjo a “wake up call” has gone  to all Governors and Governors-elect in South West Geopolitical Zone , urging them to give the region’s security maximum consideration. They are to take actions aimed at safeguarding their people as posterity would never forgive any of them who look askance when Yoruba land is being run aground, surrounded..

According to the group, Yoruba Land has been encircled by external criminals masquerading as herdsmen and they are mostly from Kebbi, Katsina, Kano, Sokoto and some West African Countries,  who are being dropped, daily in Yoruba Land, by Heavy Duty Trucks. They are to be found inside forests in Oke-Ogun axis of Oyo State; Ido/Osi, Ikole, Oye, Irepodun/Ifelodun, Ijero and Efon-Alaaye areas of Ekiti State; Obafemi Owode, Remo and Ayetoro-Imeko in Ogun State; Ife/Ijesha / Iwaraja in Osun state and Akoko-Owo-Akure land in Ondo state, pretending to be herdsmen who rear cows during the day but are, in reality,  kidnappers and armed robbers.

Most of the freed kidnapped victims, when interrogated by this group’s Security and Intelligence Team have confirmed that their abductors are mostly Fulani herdsmen, some of whom are non-Nigerians. “Consequently, they continued: we call on all Governors in Yoruba Land, including the incoming ones, to as a matter of urgency, set machinery in motion to flush out these criminals.

“To start with, all heavy duty trucks, and trailers, coming into Yoruba Land should be thoroughly searched at border towns. All herdsmen in Yoruba Land must be duly registered and put on jacket/uniform whenever, and wherever, they are located.. According to the group, these people are now penetrating into Lagos State under the guise of  being okada riders, whereas, they are advance teams, digging for information to be delivered to their  compatriots for operations.

“We therefore suggest that a Law be enacted to ensure that all Okada riders operating in Lagos State should be registered, at designated centres across the state, with their Bank Verification Numbers taken. Jackets with registration numbers must be issued to them after meeting all requirements and payment of registration fees. Anyone caught riding commercial motorcycles without uniform should be arrested and charged to court in accordance with the appropriate laws,” the group said.

The group further appeals to all Landlords and Community Development Associations (CDAs) to thoroughly fulfil all tenets of Know Your Customers (KYC) before engaging Security Guards so as not to live with enemies within.

The group is saying, by all these: Orisa bo le gbe mi, fi mi si le bo se ba mi meaning we  will help ourselves if the federal government will not..

However, I am at a complete loss when everybody thinks President Buhari is the only man to tackle and solve these problems in the North. As already mentioned, these problems are a century old, if not more, and every leadership cadre in that part of the country is vicariously liable for its increasing Somalisation but, more especially the elected governors. Unfortunately rather than massively invest in education and agriculture, and passionately invest in human capital development, what we see at the end of their tenure , are most of them being hauled before courts by the EFCC to account for billions of naira they have allegedly stolen. And these are people who don’t miss a year’s hadj to Mecca or pilgrimage to Jerusalem, thinking they can mock God.

I have wondered to no end  as to when Northern leaders would show remorse in the North being a massive drain on a country to which they contribute the least since, by neglecting the care of the people, literally all means of productivity have gone kapüt, the once flourishing textile mills are as dead as dodo; agriculture with its massive irrigation infrastructure has become a life and death affair – no thanks to Boko Haram – and herding which used to characterise peaceful, stick wielding herdsmen, has since been weaponised, whether at home in the North or in the fartherest precincts of Southern Nigeria.

Today, apart from taking care of millions of IDPS , the North is daily gulping billions, in all currences, for equipping, and maintaining, all manner of ‘Puff arders”, the most expansive, to date, being: Air force Operation ‘Diran Mikiya’, with a coordinated air strike and a force package of two attack helicopters, 1000 policemen with counter terrorism unit (CTU), federal special anti-robbery squad (FSARS), anti-bomb (EOD) squad, “Operation Maximum Safety” with 510 police personnel and 40 patrol vehicles”.

More annoying, however, is that there are no clear signs of abatement to the rampaging banditry.

Therefore, true Federalism is the only answer.

  • Group condemns NLC’s move against Labour Minister

A group, the Coalition of Delta APC Support Groups, has condemned the barricading of the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige’s residence by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

It also called on Nigerians to speak against the act.

In a statement made available to newsmen in Warri, the group, through its convener, Prince Daniel Ekuigbo, described the move as not only a violation of the minister’s right to private living, but also a threat to other humans.

Recall that the NLC had organised a protest to the residence of the minister, demanding that Chief Frank Kokori be reinstated as chairman of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF), a position that has been already assigned to Mr Austin Enajemo-Isire, by President Muhammadu Buhari.

However, Chief Kokori had been duly appointed as chairman of the Michael Imoudu Labour Training Institute, Ilorin, Kwara state by the president.

Wondering why the NLC is making an issue out of the chairmanship appointment because their preferred candidate is a former labour leader, the convener noted that the organised labour may have committed a criminal offense.

Adding that the NLC ought to “prioritize” the interests of Nigerians over one person, the statement stressed that taking such protest to an unofficial residence is reckless and puts the life of the entire neighborhood at risk.

Ekuigbo expressed shock that the NLC is determined to break the law and even spill the blood of Nigerians to achieve a clearly illegal purpose.

“The picketing of the Labour Minister’s private residence was not only unlawful and against the Trade Dispute Act of Nigeria and gross violation of the fundamental right of Dr Ngige to his private life, but also criminal and an embarrassment to organize labour organization.

“Assuming without conceding that Ngige acted outside Presidential approval to refuse the inauguration of Kokori as chairman of the board of the NSITF, does such act constitute a trade dispute which permit the NLC to picket offices or businesses where the dispute arises?

What exactly is NLC’s interest in this matter? The same Kokori has been given another appointment by Mr President as Chairman of the Michael Imoudu Labour Training Institute, Ilorin, so why is NLC insisting Kokori must be Chairman of NSITF?

“The NLC must know that there are federal laws that established and regulate trade unions and trade disputes which must be obeyed by all parties, employers and employees including trade unions.

“NLC can only act within such laws and must restrict its protest or picketing to the official offices and in this case, perhaps offices of the Minister of Labour, the office of Mr President or other Federal Government office connected to the NSITF in its determination to compel either Dr Ngige to disobey Mr President or Mr President to change his approval from Mr Isire to Chief Kokori whichever is applicable.

“For the NLC to take its protest to the private residence of a government official for matters that are wholly and strictly official, is totally condemnable and should be denounced by all Nigerians because such act is not only lawless but violates the private life of Ngige and indeed any official of government and private sector.

“To take petrol tankers loaded with fuel and block the entrance of the Minister’s house is not only an illegal and dangerous act of intimidation but a reckless threat to life and properties of not only Dr Ngige and family but Dr Ngige’s neighbors and their families.

“Finally, we call on all Nigerians to rise up and condemn this barbaric act by the NLC. Nigerians should direct the NLC to prioritize the interest of Nigerians ahead of an individual who believes he is entitled to be appointed to a particular position by the President of Nigeria”.

  • Buhari felicitates with Namibian former president, Sam Nujoma at 90

President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated former President of Namibia, Dr Sam Nujoma, who turns 90 on Sunday, May 12.
