  • PT’s presidential candidate, Olawepo-Hashim congratulates Buhari

Presidential candidate of People’s Trust (PT) Mr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim has congratulated candidate of the All Progress Congress (APC), President Muhammadu Buhari on his declaration as winner of last Saturday’s presidential election.

He however called on him to be mindful of numerous lapses identified in the electioneering process.

Olawepo-Hashim, who ran a robust campaign harping on issues and preferring solutions to them, stressed not a few gaps including card reader failures, thump printing of ballot papers, allocation of results, violence and killing plagued the polls.

Nevertheless, he congratulated Buhari for “greater good, peace and progress of the nation and also in compliance with the peace accord, which all the aspirants signed.”

In a statement where the usually cerebral politician articulated his positions, he expressed gratitude to the team of supporters who broke the bandwagon and showed loyalty to him, making him one of the frontrunners beyond the dominant party candidates.

According to him: “I am particularly thankful to the people of Yauri Emirate and Zuru in Kebbi State, who spoke through their votes that family ties cannot be easily broken by politics.

“While the APC and PDP remained the dominant parties in Kebbi State, the great people of Kebbi State showed loyalty to the bloodline by making sure that People’s Trust emerged third in most of the State.

“I continued to receive calls of support and solidarity from titleholders in the emirates and village heads who continued to say to me, ‘I hope you saw our hand?’.

“I saw their hands. The votes were many, not the 96 votes declared by Professor Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman of INEC.”

Usually calm and collected, Olawepo-Hashim was clear in maintained his party went around the country in the campaign season and were one of the few alternative candidates to the two dominant parties, APC and PDP, who organized rallies and engaged in commercial advertising on the print and the electronic media right to the last day of campaigning.

Their messages, he noted,  were clear that Nigeria can indeed build a US$4 trillion economy within 10 years and that the country can be  united and secured, besides the ability to employ youths by creating 4 million jobs per year and paying workers a living wage of not less than N50,000.

According to the business mogul- turned politician: “We passed a strong message that a ‘new and better Nigeria is possible’. Now the election has been won and lost.

“It is my duty, as a matter of honour as all contestants signed an accord to keep the peace and congratulate the winner. I therefore offer my felicitation to the winner of the 2019 Presidential election, President Muhammad Buhari.

“I pray for God’s guidance for him and wisdom as he steers the ship of State further in the next four years.”

He explained the nation cannot pretend everything has been smooth in the processes leading to the election and the election itself.

Some of the ugly realities are assignments for political leaders and the entire citizenry to fix in the immediate future with a view to resolving them so as to building a stronger democracy, a more united and prosperous Nigeria.

The candidate with a rich history of activism alleged an attempt to politically delegitimise the People’s Trust (PT), its presidential candidate and other platforms.

Pursuant to this, the series of ridiculous votes in the region of 40, 90, 100 in different States allocated by Professor Yakubu, the chairman of the INEC and his team does not in any way reflect number of votes obtained by the People’s Trust in the elections.

The total votes announced in many States and FCT were in fact less than votes recorded in some and most of the polling units.

To the gallant contestant, while People’s Trust cannot claim to have out-performed the APC and PDP in any State, in most States of the North-Central and Kebbi State, it recorded votes that place it in the third position.

“Unfortunately, the handler and fixers of the current exercise will rather choose to ridicule the People’s Trust while allocating huge figure to shadowy parties that were deliberately registered and propped-up to give support and legitimacy to the ruling party.

“The whole idea was started earlier in the campaign season, by scheming the People’s Trust out of the Presidential debate and electronic media channels controlled by the ruling party.”

Rather unruffled, he continued: “These political forces who are not simply contented with rigging elections in 2019 alone, also want to determine the set of political platforms to promote for the future. They want to play God over our destiny.

“These forces are unhappy that the People’s Trust submitted the highest nominations into offices during the nomination exercise.

“They are unhappy that we won the online votes amongst the alternative parties. They have done everything to attack and destroy our platform, but we are undaunted and not intimidated”

He alleged further: “The odious scheme of this anti-PT forces finally came to the fore when one of the private stations controlled by the ruling party quickly assembled some proxy analysts to lampoon the ‘bad showing’ of some young parties, they immediately launched a deregistration of these parties, even only after the results of only two States had been officially announced, this is how petty, ugly and low, the electoral and political process in 2019 has descended to.”

On electoral irregularities, violence and killings, the business magnate stated that it was noted in many locations and the unusual large numbers of cancelled votes in Plateau, Benue, Nasarawa and other areas.

“Incidentally, these States fall within the catchment areas of the People’s Trust (PT).

“In many States, we have received reports of ballot snatching, delayed arrival of voting materials or deliberate non-distribution of materials and wide spread irregularities.

“We hope the managers of the process will address these problems and stop further bloodshed in the land.

Other than this, he said in the build-up to the election, following the initial postponement, they envisaged the present scenario and the reason why they requested in their letter dated 17th February, 2019 for a four week postponement of the polls to allow for a properly audited system and a cool-off period from what was obviously a desperate election scenario.

Unfortunately, the major parties appear to be interested in having the election anyhow and not properly.

“The outcome of the 2019 Presidential elections, even though we have accepted it in the interest of peace and stability of the country, fall short of international standard and the standard established at the 2015 election.

“President Muhammad Buhari must, soon after the Governorship and State Assembly elections, probe the inefficient conduct of the INEC. It will be time also to have a national conversation on how to unbundle the INEC and have a more efficient and transparent Election Management Process.”

On vote buying, he said, they “saw massive voters’ inducement with cash especially by the two dominant parties. Whatever support therefore, obtained by them has been immorally and illegally acquired.

“Cash deployed have also been above the threshold set by the electoral act. One unfortunate dimension of the vote purchase market in the just concluded Presidential election is that the practice was not just driven by unscrupulous politicians desperate for votes but by the demand of about 60% of the voters who turned for financial gratification before voting.

“Candidates who refused to offer cash-for-votes were generally referred to as ‘unserious candidates’ and severely punished at the polls. Nigerians as a people must have a honest debate about vote buying and its impact on the electoral outcome and governance.”

Concluding, Olawepo-Hashim said the election showed that the victor has secured a massively tainted victory that lives behind ‘a sour taste in the mouth’ and a broken polity.

It is his responsibility to pick the pieces and heal the wounds that have already been inflicted in the land.

“On my part, I consider it a rewarding participation in spite of the outcome. It is always honourable to stand up for duty to one’s country, regardless of the outcome. I remain undaunted; I remain solid in my faith that a better Nigeria is Possible. I pledge to you that you will find me always a willing partner in the unfinished assignment for the peace, unity and prosperity of Nigeria, even as the future beacons.”

  • Tea, bean-cake sellers celebrate Buhari’s victory

Tea and bread sellers on Wednesday in Yola treated ‘almajiri ‘ pupils to a free breakfast as part of activities to celebrate the re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari of the APC.

A News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) correspondent who went round the town, reports seeing the pupils queuing up in different tea and bread selling spots, most of them beaming with smiles while waiting for their turn to collect their share.

One of the sellers, Umaru Ali, told NAN that their joy knew no bound, adding that their gesture was aimed at ensuring the participation of the less privileged in the celebration.

One of them,  Hajara Yakubu, told NAN that she was a beneficiary ‘trader-moni’ programme of the Federal Government, as such had to give thanks to God that the initiator of the programme had triumphed to continue his good work.

“I have spoken to many of my friends who benefitted from the programme and they are doing same to celebrate Buhari’s victory,” Yakubu said.

On their part, most commercial tricycle operators in the town adorned their vehicles with the pictures of President Buhari as  they engaged in their daily business.

Meanwhile, there was a minor fracas between supporters of Buhari and Atiku along Yola to Gombe road in Numan town as supporters of Buhari trooped out to celebrate.

Confirming the incident, the Public Relations Officer of Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Mr Abubakar Baba, said the issue was not a serious one and that it had been brought under control.

“It’s a minor fracas that led to road blockage but our men in that area have moved in with other security agencies to contain the situation,” Baba said.

  • Ganduje: Those doubting Kano presidential results are unserious

Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje on Wednesday described those doubting the elections results from his state as unserious.

From his state, President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC) had got the highest votes of 1,464,768 to defeat the People’s Democratic Party’s  (PDP) candidate Atiku Abubakar, who scored 391,593 from the state.

While there were no incidences of violence in the state, seventeen local government areas were affected by election cancellation.

Ganduje who was at the Aso Villa to congratulate President Buhari on his re-election, spoke with State House correspondents.

Asked to react to those questioning the figures that came from Kano State, he said, “First of all, they are not serious people, they are people who are anti-democracy.

“If you have seen how the elections were conducted I think everybody will agree that INEC tried very well. Even though there was low turnout of voters because we were expecting to get much more than that, but the election was fair and free.

“Those who say we couldn’t have got that much are ignorant of the politics of Kano.” he added

According to him, the result of the Presidential and the National Assembly in the state has put the APC in good position to win the March 9th gubernatorial and House of Assembly elections.

Asked why he did not deliver on the five million votes he promised, he said, “Well, I told you it’s because of the low turnout of voters but I promise you next time…let’s look towards the governorship election.”

On his chances on the coming governorship election, Ganduje said “My chances are very high and you can see the beginning of it with the presidential elections. We gave Mr. President the highest number votes, all the three senators are back, 24 House of Representatives members out of 24 have succeeded. What else are you expecting? That is the foundation.

“Another thing is that Mr. President has done a lot of work in Nigeria and in Kano and as a government we have done a lot in Kano State. If there was negative reaction we would have seen it from the presidential election.

“That is why I say we are heading for a huge success in Kano both in the gubernatorial and state House of Assembly elections.”

On why he was in the Presidential Villa, the Kano governor said, “First of all we have to thank almighty God. I am here to expressed my happiness and congratulate Mr. President personally and to also thank all Nigerians for voting Mr. President for the second term, for voting the most honest person because he laid the foundation for the development of a new Nigeria, and a man who loves Nigeria more than himself, a man who believes in free and fair elections.

“We are forging ahead in terms of getting the right thing done in Nigeria. So, I’m here to congratulate him personally before we come as a group from Kano to congratulate him.” he added

  • Stop mocking the dead, political parties hit at PDP over comments on insecurity

The Association of Political Parties in Nigeria (APPN) has cautioned the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to desist from mocking the dead by politicizing and trivialising national security in a bid to gain public sympathy.
In a reoccurring theme, the opposition on Tuesday asked the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, to apologise for allegedly misleading the nation with unfounded security breach against the party and its Presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.
This followed Mr Mohammed’s assurances on Monday that the nation was safe for the Presidential inauguration.
In reaction, the APPN advised the opposition to accept the part it played in the creation of security challenges facing the country even as it continues to worsen the situation.
According to a statement by Dr. Achille Idakwo, National Chairman, on Thursday, under the PDP leadership 1000 killer snipers were reportedly trained by Chief Olusegun Obasanjo while Dr Goodluck Jonathan empowered the Niger Delta militants.
Instead of hide in shame for the problems it caused the nation and celebrate the tremendous feat of the Nigerian Army under President Muhammadu Buhari, the APPN added that the PDP is unnecessarily heating up the polity causing further pains to the families of the desist.
The group, however, dissociated itself from the recent action as only the party can explain to Nigerians the true identity of those recruited to murder Nigerians and cause security breaches in the land.
“Even as we speak, PDP politicians continue to arm youths as their own idea of empowerment. Some PDP governors are known to have created militias, arm and fund them for sinister motives. Only that the youths recruited as militias often divert the weapons given to them to run kidnap business and cattle rustling, past times that have triggered cycle of violence that now appear perpertual, “ the APPN disclosed.

“ APPN remains mindful of the position of the PDP global leader and presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, whose unique selling proposition to his prospective American backer is that killings will continue in Nigeria if President Muhammadu Buhari is allowed to assume the mandate he was widely given by Nigerians at this year’s General Elections. This satanic assertion is on top of other criminal enterprises like the PDP kitting militants with army uniform in Rivers state, hiring killer bandits to cause mayhem in the northwest and continuing to finance Boko Haram in the northeast.

“ The PDP can therefore not be the very root and cause of insecurity in the land and then wake up to sympathize with Nigerians on the same ugly plague that they brought upon the people. It is a case of shedding crocodile tears, which Nigerians will have none of. The fact that the federal government is being measured in the way it is managing the security breaches being caused by the PDP does not translate into absolution for the killer party.
“Our position on this matter is that the country must hurry to address the problems caused by and is till being escalated by the PDP. We should, ordinarily, be calling for the immediate arrest and prosecution of those that are known to be behind the security breaches in the country but we realize that such decisive action would be followed by cries of the opposition is being hounded. We therefore resorted to calling on the, their allies and sponsors behind the killings in the country to halt their attack on Nigerians. It is the last window of opportunity for the PDP to redirect itself to thinking about the interest of the masses even though it is a concept that alien to it.
“APPN is consequently dissociating itself from the call by the PDP as only the that party can explain to Nigerians the true identity of those it has recruited to kill Nigerians and cause secuirity breaches in the land. The PDP is also the one entity that can explain the motives behind the killings and correctly tell Nigerians when peace will return to the country.”

  • Re: Military promotion, retirement and Religious politics

I am not impressed with some critics or “activists.” It is not enough to think, we have the liberty of expression and endowed with skills of the pen and so, can wake up any day to push all manner gibberish into public domain.
The article by Samuel Omachi titled, “Military Promotion, Retirement And Religious Politics” has the tapestry of what some Nigerians describe as armchair criticisms. I perused the entire gamut of the article and found nothing convincing. It is speculative, assumptive and very fluid. Its infantile reasoning to push the argument that some officers have been retired from military service and from a particular region of the country without any striking example.
It sounds exciting only to the extent it fulfils the inner yearnings of the critic to fuel public incitement or anger against the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, the current leadership of the Nigerian military and presiding officials of the Federal Character Commission (FCC). There is no modicum of credibility in anything the critic has rendered his reading fans.
It’s just like I would pick a pen and scribble that Samuel is not the son of his father. And I will not explain anything to justify this claim. But feel contented I have questioned his paternity.  Mr. Samuel, let me correct certain impressions first.
It may please Samuel to know that President Buhari is an impartial leader. It is the immutable truth. Buhari’s honesty, integrity and passion of perceiving every Nigerian like a member of his nuclear family is legendary. No Nigerian leader I know has exhibited his leadership traits. We cannot doubt it.
Buhari has no affinity to any religion, tribe or region. It is evident in the manner he dispensed his first term in office by patronizing every section of Nigeria regardless of whether they supported his presidential aspiration in 2015 or backed out of it.
The President sees Nigeria and Nigerians as one huge united and indivisible community of people destined to be together. It is not his Presidency that would break this cord of communality.  He is not the kind of President a Samuel would gleefully seek to destroy simply because he is excited with an idle pen.
The retired or promoted military officers, Samuel glowingly alludes in his narration are shielded by this narration. I don’t believe in those who claim to be fighting injustice with fearfully or masked. Those who genuinely stand for the cause of injustice and truth do it boldly. King Martin Luther Jr died fighting it boldly; Nelson Mandela spent 27 years in prison for fighting apartheid and a lot more.
What about our own Gani Fawehinmi? They are human beings and also value the air they breath and the freedom savoured by the rest of us. So, hiding to claim fighting  injustice is absolute mischief.
Any informed critic like Samuel wants us to believe would have at least mentioned some names of the sacked soldiers to buttress and anchor his point. It is unwise to embark on such a senseless voyage by guessing vague figures. It demeans and defeats sound argument. The Nigerian military were gracious enough to respond to him by attempting some explanations. I am angry with them for promoting nonsensicality.
Now Samuel, let’s break your piece to shreds to establish the extent you goofed. Happily, Samuel elaborately quoted the Federal Character Commission (FCC) in his narrative. And assuming, he could vouch for whatever propaganda contained in this irritating piece, we expected him to have quoted correspondences he had with the FCC over this alleged injustice.
Oh Samuel! Public systems do not function according to personal  whims and caprices. There are procedures and, in this instance, the first step of a person convinced of a genuine case of injustice would have been to approach the FCC for redress. Activism requires commitment. It’s either you are committed to it or abandon the cause and desist from unnecessary noisemaking. I hope Samuel is with me and decoding it appropriately?
It smacks of barefaced mischief and ridiculous posturing to the institution of the Military for Samuel or anyone else  to think he can remote control the routine internal postings, retirement or appointments. We have marketed ourselves as sticklers to religion or tribe in handling national issues and it has cost us grave retardations in the past. Some leaders adhered to such principles over merit and the 57-year old Nigeria has remained tethered to retrogression we see today.
Samuel, do you expect for instance that if the first seven airforce pilots in seniority are Christians or all Muslims or from the same geo-political zone, you expect their junior should be catapulted from the back to head them in order to balance the sentiments espoused by you? Is it normal and if Samuel heads a place, would he consent to such anomaly?
The day any Nigerian is appointed into any position, he knows there would come a day of retirement.  And retirement is not same as termination of appointment. So, if all those due for retirement are from one tribe, religion or region, they should hang on for the absurd reasons advocated by Samuel?
One could secretly replace names in the public civil service or other public institutions. But it doesn’t sound plausible to me that the military could “secretly” replace retired personnel, ignoring the rigours of military training. Its not possible even in the para-military. I task Samuel to conduct his research properly and serve us verifiable and undeniable facts or respect himself with silence.
Nigerians are the most talented and belligerent people in the world, yet our country does not reflect it. We regale in the excitement of freedom and seem to forget our limits. I don’t know which American dictates to President Donald Trump, who he should appoint into sensitive positions that are levers of the success or failure of his government. He sacked Rex Tillerson as Secretary of State and appointed Mike Pampeo without consulting anybody. He sets the standard for his appointments.
We must recognize that there are certain liberties we must concede to President Buhari. If Nigeria is rated a failed or successful nation now, only Buhari takes the blame or credit. Nigerians will not blame any religion, tribe or region, but President Buhari. When insecurity rages in the country, we blame Buhari and not the ethnic champions or religious bigots who canvass for such sentiments in appointments.
So, what is wrong if President Buhari  in the last presidential campaigns told  Ndi’gbo that none of  their sons met the criteria to be appointed any of the Security Chiefs? Was it not just yesterday Gen. Ihejirika was there as COAS? What impact did he make on the war against Boko Haram insurgency?  It rather festered under his watch. Perhaps, he was not even qualified, but the then President appointed him in response to such  unproductive sermons of Nigerians like Samuel.
Samuel angles for us to believe his poor criticism and so, compensates himself by tasking others to do what he failed to do: Hear him; We call on the Presidency, the National Assembly and the military authorities to go beyond rebuttal of alleged divisive and religious administration of the armed forces. Let them constitute an independent panel of inquiry to forensically investigate the alleged infraction of federal character in the military and para-military appointments, postings, retirements and redeployment with the view to assuaging frayed nerves in the interest of unity, peace, tranquility, justice and fairness in the country.”
For me, this is outright expression of unpardonable intellectual and research laziness. If the result of such independent inquiry is published, would Samuel not pick loopholes in it so long as it does not favour his jaundiced thinking?
I advise Samuel to always stoop to conquer.  Its wrong to stoke public anxiety baselessly and unnecessarily only to push the burden of proof to someone else. I repeat, nothing in Samuel’s piece alerts me to the submissions of a serious mind or critic or activist. It’s unfortunate that Military authorities stooped so low to dignify him with a response.
But let it be known to the likes of Samuel that the military under President Buhari is no respecter of tribe, religion or regionality. Its insulated from such regressive sentiments. Samuel can utilize his idleness by scavenging elsewhere. An African adage says, “idle hands scratches the anus,” and Samuel’s piece is a perfect illustration.
The Armed Forces of any nation is a sensitive national institution and everyone is its owner. All military personnel lose their tribe, region or religion from the first day of enlistment and garb the coat of national tribe for their country. The logic of the sentiments and bogus assertions spewed by Samuel are not derivable in the Nigerian military.  Nigerians must therefore see the need for national cohesion, national unity and national peace above every other consideration.
Johnson wrote this piece from Nigerian Institute of Journalism, Lagos.
