Emir Sanusi tasks northern leaders on girl-child education‎

The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has called on Northern leaders to promote girl-child education in the region.

Sanusi made the call during the inauguration of Aminu Dabo College of Health Sciences laboratory complex in Kano on Monday.‎

‎‎He urged the leaders to give priority to female education as they did with their male counterparts.

‎‎”The people need to prioritise their commitment toward the education of female just like their male counterpart.‎

“We appeal to everybody, especially well- meaning individuals irrespective of party differences, to provide the environment to aid girl-child education,” he said.‎

The monarch also admonished the people of Kano to support each other and work as a team for the overall development of the state.

He commended the proprietor of the school for his foresight and contribution to the development of education in the state.‎

Earlier, the proprietor of the school, Alhaji Aminu Dabo, had said that the school was established two years ago to promote educational development in the state.

He said that 80 per cent of the institution’s students’ population was women.

Dabo added that the school would collaborate with Kwara University and another university in Malaysia for degree courses.

He commended the Kano Emir for his stance on girl-child education and also thanked him for honoring the invitation to the event.

Leaders must live up to responsibilities – Sanusi

The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, on Wednesday urged Nigerian elites to wake up to their leadership roles.

The monarch also said the reason the country experienced failure in some sectors of the economy was due to inability of leaders to set their priorities right.

He advised those in position of authority to focus on providing education, healthcare instead of dreaming of owning runways and having mega cities.

The Emir spoke in Abuja when the Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, was given the award of Most Security Conscious Governor in Nigeria by the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris.

Bello was honoured for addressing security concerns in the state.

Charging the governor and others in position of authority, Sanusi said: “My advice to his Excellency is to remember that to whom much is given, much is expected. For all of us in positions of authority, whether governor, emirs, police commissioners, the president and chairman of local government, we must remember that over 170 million Nigerians were created by God and when God chooses us and put us in these positions, it is not because he does not love those not given the position.

“In fact, it is because he loves them that we were appointed to serve them. The responsibilities come with the realization that we are there not for ourselves but for those who are not there. This is the first test of leadership and that is what public service is about.

“If there is anything that has destroyed this country, it is because people are thinking that offices are for themselves and their families but it is not. We were given offices for those who are not in office; we were given office to not sleep so that they may sleep. We were given office so that you can go hungry so that they may eat.

“You were given office so that you stay awake fearful of what may happen to them so that they may sleep in peace. People who think that they are in office to enjoy, to have sound sleep, to have a comfortable life are the worst leaders ever. So, I say to the governor and myself and to all of us who have a responsibility, the prophet of Islam has one Hadith about leadership that is very frightening.”
