Ugbe: A pillar leaves MultiChoice Nigeria

    •  By Tutu Akanni

Leadership is often judged by visibility; the loud launches, the headline moments, the public battles. But the most enduring leaders are rarely defined by spectacle. They are defined by institutions that outlive them. By systems that hold. By industries that function better because they were once in the room.

John Ugbe’s retirement as Chief Executive Officer of MultiChoice Nigeria, a Canal+ company, marks the conclusion of one of the most consequential leadership tenured in Nigeria’s modern media and entertainment history. Not because he was the most visible executive in the room, but because he was among the most deliberate.

Ugbe joined MultiChoice Nigeria in 1998, long before the business became culturally dominant or structurally complex. He rose through the ranks. Analyst, IT manager, general manager, learning the business from the inside out. When he returned in 2011 as Managing Director after a short stay away, Nigeria’s pay-TV market was changing rapidly. Competition was emerging. Consumer expectations were shifting. Regulation was evolving. What followed was not just expansion, but consolidation; the careful work of building an ecosystem rather than a product.

One of the earliest signals of this approach was the introduction of GOtv in 2011. At the time, it was not an obvious move. Nigeria’s economic structure was already showing signs of strain and affordability was becoming a real concern. GOtv was not simply a commercial response; it was a strategic acknowledgement that scale in Nigeria required inclusion. Today, with GOtv present in 52 cities nationwide, that decision reads less like a gamble and more like foresight.

The same year, Ugbe oversaw the commissioning of the MultiChoice Abuja office, reinforcing the company’s national footprint beyond Lagos. This was followed by the launch of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) in 2013, a platform that would go on to redefine recognition, visibility and validation for African film and television professionals. AMVCA did not just reward excellence; it professionalised aspiration.

Throughout his leadership journey, Ugbe demonstrated a consistent belief in infrastructure, not just physical infrastructure, but creative and human infrastructure. Initiatives like GOtv Boxing Night, launched in 2014, were not about entertainment alone. They were about creating ladders. Boxing, a sport long rich in talent but poor in structure, suddenly had a credible platform that rewarded discipline, progression and merit.

By 2016, this philosophy extended into economic empowerment. The Canvassers and GOtv Sabimen schemes have since empowered over 15,000 Nigerians, offering not just income but dignity through structured participation in the value chain.

Ugbe was appointed Chief Executive Officer of MultiChoice Nigeria in 2018, inheriting a business already prominent but entering a more volatile era. Global streaming competition intensified. Currency pressures mounted. Consumer loyalty became harder to earn. His response was not retrenchment, but reinforcement.

Under his leadership, MultiChoice Talent Factory was introduced, a fully funded, skills-based training programme for aspiring filmmakers. To date, MultiChoice has invested over $514 million in local creative talent development, contributing to more than 25,000 jobs created in the past five years through platforms such as Big Brother Naija, AMVCA and Nigerian Idol.

These were not isolated projects. They were components of an ecosystem strategy, one that recognised that content sustainability depends on talent sustainability.

Ugbe’s tenure also demonstrated institutional responsibility beyond commercial objectives. In 2020, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, MultiChoice Nigeria committed ₦1.2 billion to federal and state governments through sensitisation campaigns, cash contributions and the provision of personal protective equipment.

His appointment as Chairman of the Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria (BON) in 2021 further reflected his standing within the industry. By 2023, he had launched The Nigerian Broadcasting Awards (TNBA), creating another platform to recognise excellence and professionalism within the sector.

Across his eight years as CEO and more than two decades with MultiChoice, Ugbe oversaw the production of over 25,000 hours of content, expanded operations to 11 branches nationwide, and earned over 50 local and international awards. But numbers alone do not capture his impact.

With his retirement, Ugbe hands over leadership to Kemi Omotosho, as part of a structured and orderly succession process.

What distinguishes Ugbe’s legacy is restraint. He led through periods of intense scrutiny, regulatory pressure and public criticism without turning the business into a battleground. His leadership style was defined by governance discipline, stakeholder engagement and long-term thinking, qualities often undervalued in environments that reward immediacy.

In an industry where personalities frequently overshadow processes, Ugbe focused on building systems that could function without him. That may be his most important contribution.

As MultiChoice Nigeria enters a new chapter under new leadership, his departure feels less like an exit and more like a carefully planned handover.

MultiChoice boosts grassroots football  with fresh scheme

Leading video entertainment company, MultiChoice – a Canal Plus company, has extended its support to the Nigerian football community by providing equipment to select grassroots teams across Lagos, reinforcing its commitment to strengthening local leagues and supporting the wider football ecosystem. The gesture, which manifested in the donation of items that include branded bibs and match balls, benefited teams across different communities.

At one of the league centres in Ojota, Coach Tunde of Dynamic FC described the support as timely. “Most of our players buy their own training gear, so getting this kind of support means a lot to us.  It shows that MultiChoice is thinking about the grassroots, not just the top leagues we watch on TV. We hope they continue so more players and teams can benefit,” he said.

In Ikoyi, a Sunday League player, Abbey, said the items boosted morale among teams preparing for their weekend matches. “It makes us feel seen,” he said. “We always watch football on SuperSport, so having them support us directly is encouraging. We want more of this, more presence, more help, more investment in the local game.”

League officials said the support would help improve organisation, match quality and participation across the centres.

MultiChoice Nigeria said the initiative aligns with its wider effort to deepen its connection with football communities nationwide and contribute to the growth of the local game in the future.

Creative industry unites as MultiChoice leads walk against piracy

The fight against content theft intensified on Thursday as MultiChoice Nigeria led stakeholders in a Walk Against Piracy from Ikeja City Mall, Lagos, drawing a powerful mix of Nollywood actors, filmmakers, directors, writers, media personalities, regulators, students, and members of the public.

The walk was part of a broader national advocacy campaign aimed at protecting Nigeria’s creative economy from the escalating damage of piracy. Participants marched through the Ikeja axis, distributing flyers, engaging passers-by, and educating the public on the dangers of piracy and its impact on livelihoods.

Veteran actor Saidi Balogun, one of the leading voices at the walk, described piracy as “a silent killer draining the lifeblood of the creative industry.”

“People see the glamour but forget the sweat, months of work, and the hundreds of jobs behind a single film,” he said. “When you pirate a movie, you are killing someone’s dream, someone’s job, and the future of an entire industry. It must stop.”

Screenwriter and producer, Obi Emelonye, warned that piracy poses an existential threat to the next generation of creatives.

“Piracy is a menace eating deeply into the industry. If we do nothing, young creatives coming behind us will inherit an economy with no structure, no revenue, and no incentive to create,” he stated. “We cannot allow that future.”

The regulatory perspective came from Charles Amudipe, Deputy Director of Operations at the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC), who emphasised both the legal and personal risks tied to piracy.

“Piracy is a criminal offence under Nigerian law, punishable by fines and imprisonment,” he said. “Beyond the legal consequences, consumers who download illegal content expose their devices to malware, identity theft, and financial fraud. It is not worth the risk.”

Caroline Oghuma, Executive Head, Corporate Affairs at MultiChoice Nigeria, explained that the walk was a continuation of MultiChoice’s long-standing commitments to consumer education. Last month, the company led a school sensitisation programme at Kuramo Senior College in Victoria Island, teaching students how piracy harms creators and how they can unknowingly participate in it.

“We want to catch them young, take this message into communities, and meet Nigerians where they are,” Oghuma said. “Today’s walk is a reminder that protecting intellectual property is everyone’s responsibility. What we are fighting for is the survival of Nigeria’s creative future.”

The popular pay-TV provider, Multichoice, has slashed the price of the DStv decoder from N10,000 to a N7,900, while the GOtv decoder price dropped to N6,500.

This second major adjustment in months, effective since November 1, is part of the company’s commitment to serve customers better and provide affordable access to premium entertainment.

The new price adjustment follows an earlier reduction in June, under the company’s “We’ve Got You” campaign. Then, MultiChoice adjusted the price of a DStv decoder by 50per cent from N20,000 to N10,000, and the GOtv decoder went from N18,600 to N9,900.

  • MultiChoice takes fight against piracy to Lagos schools

MultiChoice takes fight against piracy to Lagos schools

To nurture a new generation of originality-driven Nigerians, MultiChoice Nigeria has held an Anti-Piracy Sensitisation Programme at Kuramo Senior College, Victoria Island, Lagos.

The outreach targeted secondary school students, aiming to help them understand the dangers of piracy and importance of protecting creative work from an early age.

The interactive session featured legal experts and creative industry figures, who connected with the students through storytelling, games and open conversations.

They discussed how piracy deprived filmmakers, actors, musicians and other creatives of their rewards, while also discouraging investors and limiting creative opportunities for young talents across the value chain.

The highlight of the session was a lively and insightful class led by Mr. Obafemi Agaba, a lawyer with extensive experience in intellectual property, corporate commercial law and entertainment rights.

He broke down complex topics, such as copyright, trademarks and creative ownership, into relatable examples, showing students why it’s essential to respect originality and protect creative ideas.

“Every film you stream illegally, every song or book you share without permission, takes something away from the people who made it,” he told the students. “If you love Nollywood, Afrobeats, and Nigerian creativity, then you must help protect it. That’s how we all build a stronger creative future.”

The students showed enthusiasm throughout the session, asking thoughtful questions, participating in games, and pledging to be cultural heroes who will “say no to piracy” and support originality.

Executive Head of Corporate Affairs at MultiChoice Nigeria, Caroline Oghuma, said school outreach was part of a long-term strategy to raise a generation that valued creativity and rejected content theft.

“The fight against piracy can’t start and stop with creators; it has to begin in classrooms,” she said. “The future of Nollywood and Nigerian music is sitting right in front of us. If we teach young people to value originality and respect creators, we secure the future of our creative economy.”

Also in attendance were representatives of the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC), who underscored the legal and moral implications of piracy.

Speaking on behalf of the commission, Deputy Director of Operations, Mr. Charles Amudipe, hailed MultiChoice for leading the charge at the grassroots level.

“Awareness is one of the strongest weapons against piracy,” said Amudipe. “By bringing this conversation to students, we’re not just enforcing the law, we are also shaping values that will protect creativity for generations to come.”

Vice Principal of Kuramo Senior College, Mr. Oyewale Taofik, praised the initiative, noting that the session opened students’ eyes to issues they had often overlooked.

“Many of our students and even workers did not realise that forwarding movie links or buying pirated CDs was a form of theft. Today, they’ve learnt that creativity deserves respect and that they can be ambassadors of originality,” he said.

The sensitisation is part of a broader campaign by MultiChoice Nigeria to raise nationwide awareness against piracy. The movement continues next month with the Walk against Piracy, scheduled for November 27 in Lagos. The walk will unite actors, producers, writers, directors, broadcasters, regulators, and fans in a public show of solidarity ahead of National Anti-Piracy Day (November 30).

Through these sustained efforts, MultiChoice Nigeria continues to champion a creative industry that is fair, original and globally-respected.
