  • Police: we’ll ensure justice in man’s murder

The police in Oyo State have said they will ensure that justice is served in the death of a man, Lowo Oyediran, who was allegedly stabbed to death by his wife, a lawyer at the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP), Ministry of Justice.

The deceased’s family, at the weekend, raised doubts over the ability of law enforcement agents to ensure fairness and justice in the case.

The suspect, Yewande, was on Friday remanded in Agodi Prisons after she was arraigned before the Iyaganku Magistrate’s Court on a two-count charge of murder.

A relative, who pleaded for anonymity, expressed fears that the victim may not get justice because of the suspect’s status in the ministry.

He called on Governor Abiola Ajimobi and Commissioner of Police Leye Oyebade to ensure that the family gets justice.

Police spokesperson Adekunle Ajisebutu said no one is above the law.

Ajisebutu said: “How can someone say that? The police are on top of the case and let me tell you that nobody, no matter how highly placed, is above the law.

“The law is no respecter of person. I can assure you that in this case the law will run its course unhindered. “

At the couple’s Akobo, Ibadan home yesterday, neighbours evaded questions; some ran away on sighting visitors.

The gate was locked as the house was deserted.

The late Oyediran, a native of Gbongan in Ayedaade Local Government Area of Osun State, was allegedly stabbed twice on Tuesday morning at their home.

He was said to have been stabbed in the arm and back and was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The victim, after the initial treatment, was brought back home by some neighbours, including his landlord, who waded into the disagreement between him and his wife.

After everyone had gone to bed, his wife allegedly stabbed him again in the neck while he was asleep.

  • Two held for alleged murder of 20-yr-old

Two youths in Ilaro, a suburb of Ogun State, Adewale Odede and Taiwo Ogoja, have been arrested for the death of a secondary school graduate, Idowu Akolawole.

Akolawole, 20, was declared missing on November 15, 2015, when he failed to return home after taking the suspects out on his brother’s motorcycle.

The matter was reported at Oja Odan Police Division by relatives of the deceased cyclist.

Akolawole was said to have graduated from Itoku High School, Ilaro, last year.

The Nation gathered that Akolawole’s mobile telephone set was found on one Idowu, who subsequently mentioned one Ahmed as the individual who sold the phone to him.

Ahmed, it was gathered, also told men of the local vigilance group who apprehended him that he bought the phone from Odede.

It was learnt that the suspects allegedly lured Akolawole on November 15, 2015 to an unknown destination.

A source that did not want to be mentioned said: “Odede said it was Ogoja who called him for a meeting at Olorulekan Village near Oja Odan. He said that Akolawole took them on his motorcycle to the meeting place.

“When they disembarked on a bridge near Yewa River, Ogoja asked Akolawole to look at a ‘strange’ object inside the river. He then pushed Akolawole from the back into the river and took his motorcycle and phone away.”

The suspects were later taken to Ilaro Police Division.

The matter has since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Eleweran, Abeokuta, where the suspects are being detained for further investigation.

  • Woman docked for attempted murder of fiancé, theft

The Police have accused a 46-year-old woman, Victoria Alaegbu, of attempting to kill her fiancé and stealing his 1.5 million dollars cash, equivalent to N295.5 million.

Alaegbu, whose address was not given, was arraigned Wednesday at an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on a five-count charge bordering on conspiracy, attempt to kill, stealing, unlawful detention and possession of a fake document.

Prosecuting Sergeant Nicholas Akpene told the court that the defendant committed the alleged offences on December 13, 2015, at 8:30 p.m, at Ojora Road, Ikoyi, Lagos.

He alleged that the defendant attempted to kill one Prince Hillary Unachukwu by administering a noxious chemical substance on him.

It was also alleged that the substance administered on Unachukwu knocked him out from 8:00 p.m to 12:00 midnight, which gave the defendant time to steal his $1.5 million, equivalent to N295.5 million.

The prosecutor further alleged that after taking Unachukwu’s money, the defendant locked him up inside his apartment with a padlock.

He then alleged that when the noxious substance administered to him gradually wore off and Unachukwu awoke, he was too weak to free himself from the unlawful detention by the defendant.

The prosecutor also claimed that the defendant was unlawfully in possession of a SIM card with number 07087773669, without properly registering the number with her name and address.

He added that the registration of the sim card was done with the intent to commit fraud.
The alleged offences contravened Sections 228, 270, 285 (1) (f) and 404 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011, the prosecutor said.

The defendant, however, denied all of the charges.

Magistrate S. K. Matepo (Mrs) granted the defendant bail in the sum of N5 million with two sureties in the like sum.

She ordered that the sureties must swear to an affidavit of means, show evidence of tax payment, and one of the sureties should be a blood relation of the accused.

The case adjourned till February 10 for mention.

Last Tuesday, the police arraigned Unachukwu’s 22-year-old security guard, Isaac Onoja, of conniving with unknown persons to steal the $1.5 million.

Onoja, from Benue State, had claimed that some unknown armed men forcibly gained entry to the premises and tied him up before stealing the $1.5m from the complainant’s room.

  • Suspect at large as murder puts Cadet Corps on ‘trial’

Suspect at large as murder puts Cadet Corps on ‘trial’

Olumuyiwa Ewaworin, a 400-Level Psychology student of Adekunle Ajasin University at Akungba-Akoko (AAUA) in Ondo State, has been beaten to death, allegedly by members of the Cadet Corps, the institution’s anti-cultism outfit. The prime suspect, Adeola Adedoyin, is at large, amid the controversy over the incident, RICHARD ADURA-ILESANMI (300-Level Mass Communication) reports.

    • Anti-cultism corps fingered in student’s death

How did Olumuyiwa Ewaworin die? This is the puzzle for the police to unravel amid the controversy over the circumstances of his death. Accounts of his death vary. Some eyewitnesses claim that Olumuyiwa was beaten up by Adeola Adedoyin and other members of the Cadet Corps, the institution’s anti-cultism outfit, before he died.

It all began with “simple disagreement” at a party, some said; others claimed that the deceased was a member of a cult group.

The late Olumuyiwa was a 400-Level Psychology student. The Cadet Corps was established to check criminal and cultist activities on campus.

The incident happened at Shanghai Villa, an off-campus residence, where the deceased attended a colleague’s birthday party. As the party ended, eyewitnesses said a hot argument ensued between the late Olumuyiwa and Adeola, who is known on campus as “iron body”.

A resident, who asked not to be named, said: “The incident happened on Sunday during the birthday party of one of the hostel’s residents. Olumuyiwa was invited to the party by his friends, who reside in the hostel. After the party ended, Olumuyiwa was attacked by Adeola and other cadet members, who were also at the event, for allegedly initiating some of their friends into a cult group.”

Another eyewitness said: “It seems the cadet had a disagreement with Olumuyiwa before they came to the party, because they did not fight while the party lasted. It was after the party ended and when everybody had retired to their rooms that we heard somebody being beaten at Block A of the hostel.

“A student identified as Kamal was also beaten mercilessly by the cadet members for unknown reasons. Olumuyiwa was attacked with iron and charm.”

CAMPUSLIFE gathered that Adeola alerted other cadet members, telling them that the late Olumuyiwa attacked the Chief Commanding Officer of the Cadet Corps, who is a physically-challenged student.

“So other cadet members reinforced to the scene and pounced on Olumuyiwa with hard materials and charms,” a source said.

He added: “After beating Olumuyiwa to a coma, Adeola gave other cadet members money to take him to the hospital. On getting there, the doctor on duty demanded for police report before attending to the victim. As they engaged in argument, Olumuyiwa gave up the ghost.”

The university, which condemmed the incident, banned the corps and suspended the activities of all other paramilitary organisations.

In a statement by the Registrar, Mr Bamidele Olotu, the university said some of the Cadet Corps members had been arrested.

Olotu said: “A three-man investigation panel has been constituted to look into the matter and submit its report to the Vice-Chancellor within two weeks.”

The Dean, Students Affairs’ Division, Bolanle Ogungbamila, said the corps remained banned until the management comes up with its recommendation.

He said: “The Cadet Corps remains banned while the management investigates the matter.  We advise students not to take the law into their hands; they must remain calm until the school authorities investigate the matter.”

The Students’ Union Government (SUG) called for calm. It urged students not to attack other members of the Cadet Corps. Its president, Odunyemi Adegbola, said the corps had no right to beat up students.

He said: “One of us, Olumuyiwa Ewaworin, has been beaten to death by Cadet Corps members led by Adeola Adedoyin at Shanghai Villa. The victim was beaten with all kinds of materials till he went into coma and died. We have closed down the office of the cadet corps on campus till further notice. And the leadership of the union commiserates with the family and friends of the deceased.”

The union advised Adeola to report himself to the police. Other suspects are also said to be at large, but a source told CAMPUSLIFE that the Commanding Officer of the Cadet Corps whose nickname was given as “Iron Danger” has been arrested at his family house in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

The hostel remained locked when CAMPUSLIFE visited last weekend. Nobody is being allowed into the building until police investigation is concluded.

A resident, who gave his name as Olatayo, said: “We have not been allowed to have access to our hostel. Yesterday (Thursday), I had to go and beg the caretaker, who works with the school security unit, to allow me pack my personal effects, since I am travelling immediately after my examination on Friday. I have had one cloth on me since the incident.”
